Maya Hawke on the Stranger Things Hype, Fame, and What’s Next

A big part of that involves Robin coming out. After Steve confesses his feelings for Robin, she reveals her own truth: She was obsessed with him in high school—because the girl she liked had a crush on him. Steve accepts Robin warmly; by the season’s end, they’ve become best friends. “You know, there’s probably not a lot of people coming out in high school in Indiana in the 1980s,” Hawke says. “I think the reason she comes out is because she loves Steve and wants him to understand why she has to reject him and doesn’t reciprocate his feelings. It’s to preserve their friendship, and I think she wants to be her whole self with him.”

Hawke says the decision to make Robin gay came after a lot of conversations with the Duffer brothers. “We were trying to decide if that was the right thing for her, if it was natural, if it felt like who she was supposed to be,” she explains. “We just wanted to make sure nothing about it was forced.”

Eventually, though, it became clear: “It was the only true thing. When I go back and watch the episodes I shot before we made that decision, it seems so obvious to me that’s what was meant to happen.”

Hawke is grateful the scene was handled with “the most care.” If it has a greater cultural impact, all the better. “There’s a difference between having diversity in television and having diversity in hit TV shows, the shows that are in everyone’s living room,” she says. “You can get right into their heart by getting into their homes, and having empathy for characters and stories can broaden one’s empathy for people in the world. There were conversations about how that could be important or impactful, but really the decision came down to what was right for Robin.”

“I think the most important thing was that [Robin’s coming out] was original; we tried to have it be really uniquely her and not like a generic coming out scene in a big TV show.”

Of course, Steve isn’t the only new friend Robin makes. The whole Scoops Troop, which includes Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Erica (Priah Ferguson), became a pseudo-family on and off screen. “She was really nice and gave me good advice,” says Ferguson of working with Hawke. “She told me to always stay kind. I learned a lot from her.”

As the Troop’s two newest additions to Stranger Things, Hawke says she couldn’t help but share some advice with Ferguson. As she explains, she grew up seeing her family navigate the pressure of being in the public eye—and how to avoid it.

Lady Gaga's 'A Star Is Born' Is Sending Twitter Into a Hype Frenzy—for Good Reason

A Star Is Born, the much-discussed film starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, debuted at Venice Film Festival on Friday and promptly received an eight-minute ovation (due, in part, to persevering through some lightning-induced technical issues, but an eight-minute ovation nonetheless).

Eight. Minutes. As if that didn’t point to the film being worth your hard-earned money for a ticket, early reviews have also been incredibly promising, with Oscar whispers of “Lady Gaga” and “Best Actress” already circulating. In fact, they’re close to nothing but glowing—and Twitter is psyched for the movie’s debut.

The heaps of praise being piled on the film, if you only read the most basic of information on it, are—to be very honest—a little surprising: This is Cooper’s directorial debut, making the film something critics are more wont to pick apart than not. It’s also a remake: The original version came out in 1937 and has been reimagined several times, which inevitably prompts many comparisons against past iterations. And, it features a crossover star: Though she’s appeared on American Horror Story (and won a Golden Globe for it), Lady Gaga is, after all, first a vocalist, second an actress (at least so far). Her first movie-star role, you’d imagine, might invite extra scrutiny in terms of her ability to command a film.

But critics are in love. Over at the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw called Gaga “sensationally good” and gave the film five stars: “[Gaga’s] songs are gorgeous and the ingenuous openness of her scenes with Jackson are wonderfully sympathetic. Meanwhile Cooper, whose screen persona can so often be bland and unchallenging, makes precisely this conservative tendency work for him in the role.” Variety called it “transcendent,” with Gaga’s performance a “fetching and accomplished movie-star debut”; IndieWire called the pop icon “resplendent.” Some go so far as to say that she’s the best part of a very good film.

Needless to say, Twitter is hyped for the film to hit theaters on Oct. 8, with users f-r-e-a-k-i-n-g out over the chance to see a movie with Gaga, Cooper, a lot of romance, and some really, really good tunes (Cooper even wrote some himself).

So yeah, you could say we have the release date on our iCal (with five alerts, a special notification tone, and reminders to pre-book tickets). This is going to be incredible.

Glow Recipe's Pink Juice Moisturizer Sold Out In Two Hours, and It’s Worth the Hype

Following the ridiculous success of its gently exfoliating Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask—which had a waitlist of 5,000 people within days—Korean beauty brand Glow Recipe is back with another product that takes its cues from your favorite summer fruit, the watermelon-scented Pink Juice Moisturizer. And, just like its predecessor, it’s a hit: According to reports, bottles of the jelly-like formula sold out during in its first two hours of presale earlier this month. So, it was with some excitement that I cracked open the sculptural glass bottle to take it for a test drive—but also trepidation. I typically hoard heavy creams thanks to the speed with which my combination skin sucks up moisture, but I am nothing if not a follower who believes in the Internet’s wisdom, so I set aside my beloved emollients and subbed in this light, oil-free “juice.”

After testing the moisturizer for a week, I can attest: It’s worth the hype. Like the brand’s Sleeping Mask, Pink Juice smells uncannily like watermelon Jolly Ranchers. I’m into that, especially because while hard candy will always mean stickiness to me, after a few seconds of glistening, the Pink Juice sinks in and leaves a velvety-soft finish behind. If you’ve used a hyaluronic acid before, it’s a similar feeling—and given that Glow Recipe’s formula includes the hyper-moisturizing acid along with “vitamin-rich watermelon,” antioxidants and “soothing botanicals,” that effect checks out.

In my experience, though, hyaluronic acid only moisturizes your skin for an hour or so, unless you lock it in with a heavy cream on top. No need with the Pink Juice—every morning that I’ve slicked it on, my skin has stayed bouncy and flake-free for the rest of the day. Emphasis on the bounce: K-beauty routines are famed for creating skin that looks like you invested at least 10 steps in getting it to a translucent, collagen-crazy state (see: “glass skin“). The Pink Juice delivers that without the time commitment, and leaves behind a subtle, light-bouncing sheen in the best possible way.

If you’re starting to get over applying a highlighter daily, this is the ideal next move. The moisturizer goes on sale for $39 today on Sephora.com, and if the brand’s track record is any indication, you’re going to want to get a bottle while you can.

We Tried That Wearable Vibrator You've Heard About—and It's Worth the Hype

If you read about sex toys at all, there’s a good chance you’ve at least seen the Vesper by Crave. It’s been around for a few years, and as a popular wearable vibrator, it’s long been admired for the fact that it’s pretty enough to hide its double-life as a sex toy. But why is it so recommended? Turns out, the answer has more to do with the “vibrator” aspect than the “wearable” one.

Sure, all orgasms are awesome, but let’s be real: Not all orgasms are glamorous. Getting off with a hookup in a bar bathroom might be fun, but it isn’t glamorous. The Vesper is (Fergie voice) G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S. Like, orgasming on an island while wearing eyelash extensions and fur-level glamorous. Available in silver, gold, and rose gold, the Vesper dangles around your neck as a beautiful, long necklace. Snuggled on its stem is a small, round button that turns the vibrator on. It’s surprisingly subtle, which means that, yes, you really can have it around your neck in public and the only people who will understand its true purpose are those in the know.

Is it appropriate for every occasion? That’s your call, since wearing a vibrating necklace to a family function would probably be a bold move. Still, orgasms provide stress relief, so you could sneak into the bathroom and quickly vibrate one out at your next anxiety-provoking social obligation, as opposed to drinking a bit too much champagne. (Or do both, no judgment.)

If wearing a vibrator out in public—even if only you know it’s a vibrator—makes you uncomfortable, simply wear it at home to feel fab, or keep it on during sex. But remember, if you are going to wear it as jewelry in public, now more than ever you should remember to clean your sex toys. It’s the considerate thing to do (in addition to being the safe thing).

PHOTO: Crave

See? Subtle.

Personally, one of my favorite ways to wear and use the Vesper is during partnered sex. Making love wearing nothing but a necklace is ultra-glam. Wearing a necklace that also gets you off? Even better. It vibrates at four speeds and two modes (pulsing and constant). It’s very small and thin, so it works best for focused clitoral contact or teasing someone. So many people with vaginas require clitoral stimulation to get off during penetrative sex (although, vaginas are not required, and I know people with penises who adore this sex toy), so adding a vibrator to partnered sex is never a bad idea. But sometimes you’re in the moment and might not want to get up and pull out your favorite toy from your underwear drawer, and positioning can often be the most difficult aspect of adding a toy to the mix when you’re in the Bone Zone. But the Vesper is too delicate to ever be awkward. If your vibrator is already around your neck, you’re good to go. And it’s just so pretty. Did I mention that the company will evenpersonally engrave it for you?

The first time I used the Vesper (I have the gold one) was during partnered sex, and I came like a goddess. I tried it again later while masturbating to porn. It was still beautiful and it still made me orgasm, but I almost felt bad that my teeny, chic gold necklace had to bear witness to pop-up ads. To me, the Vesper totally gives off a “light candles and fantasize about the one you love,” so I think I prefer bigger and clunkier vibrators for masturbation and the Vesper for romantic sex with bae. Fortunately, it’s small and subtle enough that you could slip it off your neck and press it against your clit during passionate sex with another person, or use it to celebrate being single after you just bought yourself roses. Gotta love versatility.

Vesper by Crave is available starting at $69 here.

We Tested the Fenty Beauty Highlighters On Different Skin Tones, and It Lives Up to All the Hype

We’ve seen big launches in the beauty world, but honestly, very little has been on par with the Fenty Beauty debut. It could be that it’s Rihanna, and gorgeous, outsized spectacle is just her bread and butter, but more likely, the huge response has been thanks to the fact that right off the bat, Fenty Beauty treats women of all colors as equally worth representing. It’s 2017, and that should be normal, so Rihanna’s pioneering the way. And after spending two years developing the line, she did us right: from the 40 foundation colors to the sole, all-you-need lip gloss, the products are beautiful.

And the thing is, Rih understands how products play. After 12 years in the spotlight, she knows foundation needs to be a spot-on match, and she knows highlighters need to pop—which rang loud and clear at her Fenty x Puma fashion show last night. (According to our fashion editor who was there, models’ cheeks could be seen across the room.) Available as powders and in creamy stick form, they’re stunning to look at. But it’s one thing to see them in the pan or on Slick Woods’ cheekbones. It’s another to see how they live on us mere mortals of varying skin tones.

There was only one way to find out. We got our hands on the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter duo in Lightning Dust/Fire Crystal (a pearlescent shimmer duo on the more natural end of Fenty’s highlight spectrum), and put it to the test. Below, three Glamour staffers weigh in.

Khaliha Hawkins, digital administrative assistant

Skin tone: “Medium dark.”

What she thought: “I feel like for my skin tone, Fire Crystal was a bit too light. But Lightning Dust was perfect, which is shocking, because I thought it was going to be the other way around. I’d wear Fire Crystal when I go out, because it’d be darker and I’d want that pop of color to stand out. But Lightning Dust would definitely be an everyday kind of thing. The brush is really cute, and it was honestly very accurate. Everyone always says a fan brush is best for highlighter, but the Fenty one seems better, and it picks up a lot of product.”

Jessica Militare, assistant editor

Skin tone: “Light olive.”

What she thought: “I really liked the consistency of the Fire Crystal powder. There was an instant shine that was really pretty. You have to be daring enough to want to wear it to the office, but I think you could totally get away with it, especially saying it’s Fenty Beauty. Like, this is Fenty—leave me alone. Lightning Dust is lighter, but it’s that pale, brightening feel, so it still gets the job done. For me, I prefer Fire Crystal because I want my highlighter to really show. That’s the problem that I find with highlighters—I have to coat it, I really want to see what this is doing. And sometimes with certain highlighters it takes longer, but this is an immediate effect.”

Rachel Nussbaum, beauty writer

Skin tone: “Very pale, with neutral undertones”

What she thought: “When I first brushed Fire Crystal on, I was a little wary—it’s a lot of glitter, and I’m not here for a My Little Pony sitch. The champagne color is maybe just a touch too dark for my skin, but after a minute, I loved it. The powder has such a creamy consistency that once you give it a second to settle, it melts right into your skin. Lightning Dust is way more subtle, which isn’t what I typically look for in highlighter. But I’m super into it! A light, slightly matte powder feels really modern, and it’s great for places you want to highlight while being under the radar about it. Like definitely, Rihanna, help me weave that illusion.”
