Happy Birthday, Meghan Markle! It's Her First Birthday as a Royal

Meghan Markle is celebrating her first birthday as the Duchess of Sussex today, and the royal family is pulling out all the stops to wish her the best of birthdays. Although she and Prince Harry went to Botswana for her birthday last year, the newly 37-year-old royal won’t be celebrating too hard this year: Along with Prince Harry, she’s reportedly attending the wedding of Charlie Van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks. The former is one of Harry’s oldest friends from childhood—they went to school together—so it’s still going to be a pretty amazing day for the couple, who remain close to the soon-to-be newlyweds. Van Straubenzee and his brother Thomas were also ushers at Meghan and Harry’s wedding, and Harry will reportedly be serving as best man on Saturday.

But back to Meghan’s birthday: Instagram and Twitter accounts run by the royal family—as well as fans—have been wishing their newest member well on her big day.

“Thank you everyone for your lovely messages on The Duchess of Sussex’s birthday! #HappyBirthdayHRH,” Kensington Palace wrote on an Instagram post celebrating the Duchess. (It also posted the same greetings to Twitter.)

The official royal family Instagram and Twitter accounts also wished her a happy birthday.

“Happy Birthday to HRH The Duchess of Sussex! #HappyBirthdayHRH,” it posted on Saturday to both accounts.

“Wishing HRH The Duchess of Sussex a very Happy Birthday ?,” tweeted Clarence House, the official account of Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Kim Kardashian's Sisters Praised Her for Looking Skinny, and People Aren't Happy

Kim Kardashian and her sisters are very into working out. That’s no secret. However, sometimes people perceive their obsession with looking a certain way as problematic. Exhibit A: When Khloé Kardashian offered tips for looking “thin AF” on her website. And now we have exhibit B: A new round of videos in which Kim Kardashian’s sisters praise her for looking skinny.

Here’s what happened: On Sunday evening (July 29), according to BuzzFeed, Kim was attending an event with her sisters Khloé and Kendall when, at one point, the conversation turned to Kim’s recent weight loss. Kim, of course, documented the conversations on Instagram Stories. “I’m really concerned, I don’t think you’re eating. You look so skinny!” Kendall says at one point, prompting Kim to let out an excited, “What?! Oh my God, thank you!”

“I’ve never seen a human being look so good. You are a walking Facetune doll,” Khloé says, while Kendall interrupts to hold up her tiny handbag and say, “My purse is as tiny as you!” “Oh my god, the compliments!” Kim says, before turning the camera on herself to show off her body in a pair of skintight latex pants. She goes on to trade more comments about looking “skinny” with Khloé, then films a conversation in which Khloé and her friend Malika Haqq speculate that Kim must only be eating “celery, maybe some lettuce,” and “different flavors of oxygen.”

Kim then announces to her sisters and followers that she’s “down to 119 pounds,” prompting Khloé to say she looks “anorexic” around her waist.

As you can imagine, Twitter users aren’t pleased with Kim, Kendall, and Khloé’s word choices in these Instagram posts. Many are saying the sisters repeatedly complimenting each other for being “skinny”—rather than the much more empowering “healthy” or “strong”—sets a toxic and dangerous example for their followers. See some of the disappointed comments, below:

This should go without saying, but “skinny” and “hot” aren’t synonymous. Beauty and health come in all shapes and sizes. It’s high time for everyone (the Kardashian-Jenner sisters included) to remember that.

Kim Kardashian Posted an Instagram Ad for an Appetite-Suppressing Lollipop, and Twitter Is Not Happy

Kim Kardashian—like several of her relatives—is no stranger to using her platform on Instagram to make a few bucks. But her latest product-endorsing post, for a Flat Tummy Co. lollipop that claims to be appetite-suppressing, has crossed a line, as far as her followers are concerned.

The image of her sucking on a cherry-red pop included the following caption: “#ad You guys… @flattummyco just dropped a new product. They’re Appetite Suppressant Lollipps and they’re literally unreal.” She went on the urge her followers to check out the website and get some for themselves.

Kardashian has since deleted the post, likely as a result of the fierce backlash it stirred up across social media platforms. Fans and critics alike have called out how problematic it is for Kim to advertise diet products like this—which aren’t proven safe or effective, and can encourage disordered eating—to her 111 million followers.

Good Place actress Jameela Jamil, who’s outspoken about body-positivity (and whom you might remember from the viral “I Weigh” Instagram account) did not mince words in a thread of tweets about Kardashian’s post.

“MAYBE don’t take appetite suppressors and eat enough to fuel your BRAIN and work hard and be successful. And to play with your kids. And to have fun with your friends. And to have something to say about your life at the end, other than ‘I had a flat stomach,'” she continued, ending with GIF-y flair.

Others on Twitter called out how troubling this kind of promo can be for people who struggle with food, and offered up some cool-headed advice to try instead of tricking your body into not eating.“With every flat tummy tea, lollipop, magical weight loss trick promoted, there’s someone with disordered eating thinking they need it,” one user wrote. “I understand that we live in a thin-obsessed society but we need to do better. We need to teach/learn healthy relationships with food,” added another.

In January, Kardashian also promoted a program from Flat Belly Co., which featured her holding milk in her underwear while drinking…something else?

And she’s not the only one in her family: Kylie Jenner infamously endorsed waist trainers that came as part of a “snap-back” package after she gave birth, perpetuating the pressure women feel to “fix” their post-baby bodies.

The Kardashian-Jenners are famous, in large part, for their looks, and so it makes sense that they’d use these assets to make some money. That can be empowering when done right—which would mean when promoting body-positivity, self-love, and healthy behaviors to their massive followings. Instead, they let down their millions of followers by making a quick buck on some potentially dangerous snake oil.

People may not follow Kim Kardashian for verifiable health advice, but surely she knows that her claims can come across that way—even the kooky ones.

Taylor Swift's Groper Has a New Radio Job, and Her Supporters Aren't Happy

Months after Taylor Swift won her sexual assault trial, her convicted assaulter is being given a second chance at a career.

David Mueller, who was fired from his DJ job at a Denver radio station in 2013 after Taylor claimed he groped her during a concert meet-and-greet, has now been hired as a DJ at a Mississippi outlet. The Washington Post reports that the chief executive of the Greenwood-based radio station, Larry Fuss, fully believes David and not Taylor, which is primarily why he chose to hire him. (David was found guilty in his countersuit trial last August and was forced to pay a ceremonial $1 to Taylor as a result. He still denies any wrongdoing.)

“I sat down with him face-to-face in Minneapolis before I offered him the job and talked to him about it,” Fuss explained about his decision. “He’s either the world’s best liar, or he’s telling the truth. I tend to believe his version of the story and most people who have talked to him face-to-face do believe his version of the story.”

Unsurprisingly, Taylor’s fans have been rallying on Twitter to defend the artist and criticize Larry for hiring a convicted assaulter—in addition to David taking on the pseudonym of “Stonewall Jackson” for his newfound career. “To anyone who chose to ignore our reporting on how the country industry turns a blind eye to harassment and misconduct in country radio, here is more evidence. Shame on this station,” one user wrote. “Larry Fuss, #TimesUp. You might want to look into the hashtag,” another wrote. “Because I can tell you right now, the backlash you are receiving right now for your hiring decisions goes way beyond just Taylor Swift fans. This is about women, respect for women, and we will no longer be silent.”

“And yet another example of a man in power, a radio executive, who chooses to believe a man over a woman even after a jury of his peers found him guilty of sexual assault. Do not accept this offensive behavior, America. #timesup on sweeping sexual assault under the rug,” another added.

'Wonder Woman' Was Snubbed by the Oscars, and People Are Not Happy About It

Despite being the movie of summer 2017 and breaking several box office records, Wonder Woman somehow walked away from the Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning without a single nomination. That means Patty Jenkins will not be joining the embarrassingly small list of female directors nominated for Hollywood’s biggest award (though this year’s set of nominations does include one female director, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird). It also means Gal Gadot is not among the nominated actresses for her portrayal of a warrior who has to go through an incredible emotional journey and still balance a sword in the back of her dress without the help of double-sided tape. Movies that did receive a nod, though, include Boss Baby. (#NoDisrespectToHansZimmer)

The snub has created some major frustration among Wonder Woman fans, who have done what frustrated moviegoers always do: taken to Twitter to vent. They were quick to point out even if you don’t believe the DC film should have been a contender for an acting or directing nod, it should have at least been a contender in something like Best Costume Design because again, a sword in a dress!

Wonder Woman might not have a shot at taking home a golden statue this March, but the franchise is still a leader in the industry for one very important reason. The highly anticipated sequel will be the first film to put the Producers Guild of America’s anti-sexual-harassment guidelines into effect. The guidelines will provide not only anti-harassment education but also a clear system to allow victims of harassment to report it.

Below, just a sampling of the response to Wonder Woman‘s snub:

Karlie Kloss Wished Taylor Swift a Happy Birthday on Instagram

Looks like Karlie Kloss is still a bona fide Taylor Swift squad member after all.

The supermodel took to Instagram on Wednesday to post a selfie of herself and Taylor in honor of the singer’s 28th birthday. “Happy happy birthday @taylorswift!” she captioned the selfie shot, which appears to have been taken behind the scenes of a Vogue shoot in 2015.

Rumors started flying that the two of them were no longer close after Taylor released the music video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” in which one of her characters wore a shirt presumably decorated with the names of her remaining squad members. Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Blake Lively, and Lily Aldridge were all included (among others), but Karlie, Lorde, and Cara Delevingne were notably absent, which had fans speculating that they’d been excommunicated from all future concert appearances and music video roles. But based on Karlie’s Instagram post, it seems the drama (if it ever even really existed) has been put to rest.

Karlie and Taylor’s friendship was first documented in 2012 when Taylor told Vogue, “I love Karlie Kloss…I want to bake cookies with her!” Karlie apparently read the interview and tweeted at Taylor, “Your kitchen or mine?” and the two met for the first time when Taylor performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. They spent the next few years as the embodiment of friendship goals, doing things like twinning for the Met Gala, hanging out at the VSFS for a second time, and going on a road trip that appeared on the cover of Vogue. Karlie also appeared in the “Bad Blood” music video along with the rest of the Swift squad and took to the stage during Tay’s 1989 tour. You know, all the normal stuff that forever friends do together.

So far, Karlie and fellow VS angel Lily Aldridge have been the only two A-Listers to show any kind of public display of friend-fection in honor of Tay-day. As for the rest of us, we’ll celebrate by staying home and blasting “Gorgeous” on repeat.
