How to Be Happy, According to Children's Book Author Judith Viorst

“What’s been your favorite time of life?” I was asked a couple of months ago. My answer astonished my questioner—and me. For instead of a choice that approximated when I fell in love, or gave birth to my first baby, or held my first published book in my hot little hands, I looked back on my 80-plus years, my nearing 90 years, and said, “Right now.”

It seems I have no wish to turn back the clock to 30 or 40 or 50 years ago. I prefer to press “hold” on the life that I currently live. That’s true in spite of the fact that I am indisputably old—not older, not elderly, just…old. And the fact that so many people I’ve loved are dead. And the fact that my upper arms are in no condition to ever again be seen in public. And the fact that, as some late-night comic once said, my back is going out more often than I am.

It’s not that the days themselves now are so fabulous. My hair is thinning. My body is not. I can’t find my glasses or keys. And I spend so much time seeing specialists that if they gave doctorates for going to doctors, I’d easily have earned a Ph.D. But still, I don’t hesitate. The best is not ahead or behind. It’s now.

Having surprised myself by finding out that my favorite time of life is right now, I decided that I would like to figure out why. And so I’ve been sorting out some of the qualities, attitudes—some of the somethings—that have helped to make me happier as I near 90.

But before I go any further, I need to observe that I’m an exceedingly lucky lady. Lucky because I’m still married to (and still love) the person I married 60 years ago, even though he still claims that he can listen to me and read the Times simultaneously. Lucky because all my children and my grandchildren are, at the moment, doing just fine. Lucky because I have friends with whom I continue to share a deep, enduring history. Lucky because I’ve somehow been spared (at least as of today) time’s harsher assaults on the body and the mind.

I’m also lucky enough to be conscious of, and grateful for, the bountiful blessings of this great good luck.

Do I have my griefs and losses, my regrets and disappointments? Of course I do. But I’ve found that being grateful, though this is something of a cliche, offers great comfort to me, and could for you, too. For cultivating gratitude for the good stuff in our life, being aware of and even counting our blessings, brightens our view of who we are and where we are in the world—and can make us happier.

I’ve found that a little surplus of gratitude often has downstream effects, helping us become more tolerant, less judgmental, more forgiving of family and friends when they annoy or neglect us, hurt our feelings, or let us down. It’s tempting to add up their failures and flaws and compare them to our far superior selves, but we make a big mistake if we do. For while most of the folks in our life can, on occasion, be pains in the ass, so—let’s face it—can I and so can you. Figuring out that we, like they, are in need of a lot of acceptance and forgiveness can make for a happier old (or any) age.

When I was younger, I spent too much time obsessing over what would make me feel better or how I imagined a certain set of circumstances would magically transform my life and career. But I learned, though it took me a while, to look around and pay attention to what—if I’d let it—could make my life feel better right here and right now. My book Nearing Ninety opens with a wonderful quote from philosopher George Santayana, whose proposition all of us should heed: “To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring.” I believe he’s telling us that instead of wistfully looking back at what we once had, or anxiously imagining what might come, we ought to be seeking what satisfactions, what pleasures, what meaning the season we’re in has to offer us.

People Are Not Happy With Arya's Ending on Game of Thrones

Warning: Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.

The Game of Thrones series finale was an emotional rollercoaster, filled with so many twists and turns we didn’t see coming. Bran Stark was anointed head of the six kingdoms, while Sansa became queen of the separated North. Dany died. There was a mysterious water bottle in one of the shots. Fans will be processing what went down for weeks, if not months.

And they probably won’t get over what happened to Arya any time soon. In an interesting turn of events, she decided to lead an exploration of unknown territories in Westeros. We’re not sure what her intentions are on this journey, but some fans say the move is reminiscent of colonialism.

Many are confused as to why Arya, who’s so good at combat, was given this ending. Remember, people: She killed the effing Night King. It seems like her talents are better suited for a more intense mission.

The Twitter reactions, below, echo that sentiment. Check them out for yourself:

Hands down, Arya’s biggest moment on GoT this season was the Night King takedown. Maisie Williams revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly she wasn’t sure how fans were going to react to it.

“I immediately thought that everybody would hate it, that Arya doesn’t deserve it,” she said. “The hardest thing in any series is when you build up a villain that’s so impossible to defeat and then you defeat them. It has to be intelligently done because otherwise people are like, ‘Well, [the villain] couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’ You gotta make it cool. And then I told my boyfriend and he was like, ‘Mmm, should be Jon though, really, shouldn’t it?’”

The answer to that is, obviously, no. Arya earned that Night King kill—and every other great thing that happened to her this season, too.

Why Fans Aren't Happy With Game of Thrones' Daenerys Targaryen Twist

Caution: Spoilers for Game of Thrones ahead.

I talk a big game about wanting the women of Game of Thrones to step on me, shove me off a castle wall, roast me with a dragon. But I also have the energy of that girl from Mean Girls, the one who “doesn’t even go here” but still wants everyone to be friends—I’m very tender! Which is why last night, on the second to last episode of Game of Thrones, I did not like seeing Daenerys Targaryen take a turn for the worse and step into her true power as the Mad Queen.

It was a destiny many GoT have fans prophesied, yet people were still shocked by it. I was not. Daenerys was always bound to become the Mad Queen. The only thing that surprised me was how much I hated watching it happen. I’m not alone:

Since the first season, Dany was a “good guy,” the one leader of Westeros who wanted to bring peace and positive change to the realm. However, she’s also shown an extremely brutal side of herself—from eating a stallion’s heart, to siccing her dragons on Randyll Tarly and his son, to burning the leaders of Meereen.

With that past in mind, I’m not sure why so many people were stunned that Dany decided to decimate King’s Landing despite their surrender. She’s always been one of the most powerful characters on Game of Thrones.

But as much as I want her to utter the word “Dracarys” at me and feel the wrath of her dragonfire as my skin melts off, it hurts to watch this development. Maybe that’s because we’ve watched a person who was supposed to represent all that’s good in the world become radicalized by those who have wronged her. We root for the “Golden Boy” character in great epics—the morally sound Wonder Woman, “the chosen one” like Harry Potter. These characters are plagued by their own darkness or lured into evil by their nemesis, but they always end up doing the right thing in the end. Daenerys was supposed to be that Golden Girl. Until she wasn’t.

I thought that would be an interesting arc. I thought I’d enjoy watching her become the Mad Queen and scream “yes bitch” at the TV every time Drogon’s wings clapped at her haters. But with all the devastating, terrible things going on in the real world right now, actually seeing my favorite female character become the person we’re supposed to hate felt like the opposite of a fantasy.

Then again, I think Dany should have complexities. I stan Cersei in all her depravity. I’m obsessed with Arya and her bloodlust. All of us are both good and bad, and I’m not particularly interested in a female character who’s perfect. A woman who hasn’t made mistakes.

With that in mind, I think what plagued me the most about Daenerys’ downfall wasn’t that her eight-season character arc set her up for greatness, only to come crumbling down with the walls of King’s Landing. Maybe it was my fear that Jon Snow will take the Iron Throne. Screw—and I cannot stress this enough—that.

The women of Game of Thrones are the northern star of this show. Arya, Sansa, Cersei, and Daenerys have all been through more and overcome more than Jon Snow could ever imagine. The women on this show persist. They endure. They grow stronger despite their wicked circumstances. And despite it all, with one episode left in the series, I worry that a man who is weaker emotionally—and, let’s be real, as a warrior—than many of his female counterparts will helm the Throne. Snow represents, to me, all the ways in which male mediocrity is often heralded over female greatness.

Kylie Jenner Wished Travis Scott a Happy Birthday With This Giant Billboard in Los Angeles

We have to say, the Kardashian-Jenners aren’t exactly known for their subtlety when it comes to gift-giving, especially on birthdays. Cases in point: the infrared sauna Kendall Jenner got from her sisters, the $250,00 Ferrari Kylie Jenner reportedly gifted momager Kris. And Kylie went all-out again for her boyfriend Travis Scott’s upcoming birthday. The rapper turns 28 on Tuesday, and Kylie celebrated early by scrapping the normal birthday card and getting him a massive billboard instead, which is currently displayed at the intersection of Santa Monica and La Cienega—one of the busiest parts of West Hollywood, naturally.

The sign features a photo of the couple’s 1-year-old daughter, Stormi Webster, and includes a message from both the baby and Kylie. “Happy birthday Daddy,” the text on the billboard reads. “Love, Mommy and Stormi XO.”

This is, after all, the woman who basically built an entire theme park for Stormi’s first birthday. “Elaborate” doesn’t even begin to describe that party: Kylie commissioned hot air balloons, a butterfly rainbow forest, a live Baby Shark performance, a gift shop stocked with Stormi World merch, and a giant inflatable replica of the baby’s head.

But the billboard isn’t all she got Scott: Earlier in the week, Kylie had thrown an Avengers: Endgame screening party that seemed to double as another b-day bash for Scott. She reportedly decorated the Thousand Oaks Cinépolis Luxury Cinema in balloons with the word “husband” on them, and also got the whole family into their best Avengers costumes for the occasion. She even got a cake with a picture of Scott dressed as Iron Man. “oh you didn’t catch iron flame and captain lip kit in the credits? sucks 4 you,” she captioned photos of she and Scott in their Avengers get-ups.

It already feels like she went pretty hard with the planning, but there are still three days left until Scott’s actual birthday, so there might be more to come.

Danai Gurira’s Name Was Left Off the New ‘Avengers’ Poster, and Marvel Fans Aren’t Happy

Marvel got fans excited this week by dropping the official trailer and poster for Avengers: Endgame, but that hype turned into frustration for many when they noticed one glaring omission: The poster doesn’t list Danai Gurira in the cast credits at the top of the image.

In this latest installment of The Avengers, Gurira reprises Okoye, her badass warrior character from Black Panther and Infinity War. Gurira’s image appears on the Avengers: Endgame poster, alongside actors like Brie Larson and Chris Hemsworth, but she’s the only one out of 12 major players whose name isn’t listed in the top credits. That’s a massive oversight, given that Gurira is also the only black woman in the cast. The omission didn’t sit well with Twitter users, many of whom saw it as erasing a woman of color and urged Marvel to correct the poster.

“She is the only black woman on that poster, the highest profile post-snappening wakandan, a firm fan favorite, and freaking actual DANAI GURIRA to boot. put some respect on her name, damn,” one Twitter user wrote. Others pointed out that characters with less impressive roles had been included in the credits. “They really put Bradley Cooper as the fucking raccoon before Danai Gurira’s name this is pathetic,” one user tweeted.

Eventually, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Gurira’s name does appear at the very bottom of the poster, but you’d basically need a magnifying glass to see it. Marvel hasn’t responded to the criticism or issued a new poster, but fans have made it clear that Gurira should not be ignored.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters April 26.

Kourtney Kardashian Is Promoting Flat-Tummy Shakes on Instagram, and Followers Aren't Happy

Kourtney Kardashian is no stranger to a detox—and let’s just say that the Kardashian-Jenners in general aren’t averse to social media spon-con, subsidized by products like “appetite-suppressing lollipops” (looking at you for that one, Kim). The messages these posts send about body image, nutrition, and health are, in a word, harmful, considering that the products haven’t been proven to be safe or effective—and Kourtney’s latest one seems to have left her Instagram followers a little frustrated.

On Friday, Kourtney posted a photo to Instagram that features her in a gray Calvin Klein bra and underwear set. She’s holding up a water bottle with a thick, chocolate-y liquid inside of it, and behind her are two pink jars that, we can make out, read “shakes.”

“#ad Back from Aspen and back on the @flattummyco meal replacement shakes…they’re exactly what I need right now. Day 3 on the program and I’m already feeling good again. I’m starting to see my tummy toning up nicely. Chocolate is my favorite, but they’ve got 20% OFF all their flavors right now so you guys should check them out!” she captioned the post.

Needless to say, her followers weren’t super pleased: “Disgusting that anyone would promote this stuff – meal replacements are NOT the way to healthily obtain a toned look (if ?? that’s ?? what ?? you ?? want ??) Eat healthy and exercise is the only way!,” wrote @callapetra.

“I want to see you actually ingest this. As anal as you are about organic sand [sic] healthy food, you’ll still shill this? Shameful. Anything for a buck,” wrote @nosillamp.

Another follower called her out: “Lol liar. You need a pay check this bad? You don’t drink that trash and you know it!”

Kim, FWIW, was also shilling Flat Tummy Shakes this week.

Kourtney has a reputation for being super health-conscious, so it’s personally pretty disappointing to see her promoting these unregulated products. And considering that she’s admirably pushed Congress for stricter cosmetics regulations in the past, you’d think she’d be on board with stricter regulations for these often super-sketch diet products (that, let’s be honest, just tend to make you poop a lot).

No two individuals are the same when it comes to health or weight loss—and as a reminder, health professionals are far from convinced when it comes to the benefits of these shakes and teas. Let’s hope more well-thought-out #ad partnerships are part of the rest of the Kar-Jenners’ 2019 resolutions.
