Trump Bragged About His ‘Accomplishments' and the U.N. General Assembly Cracked Up

The United Nations General Assembly isn’t known for being an especially jubilant bunch, but they couldn’t help cracking up during Tuesday morning’s session.

The laughter was prompted not by a visiting comedian, nor by a scroll through Chrissy Teigen‘s latest clapbacks, but rather by one Donald J. Trump. As seen in NBC News‘s video of the moment in question, President Trump was boasting about what he claimed were the many “accomplishments” of his administration when those present at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City — mostly world leaders and delegates — couldn’t hold it in any longer.

“In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,” Trump said. As he began another sentence, he cut himself off to confirm his own brag, grinning at someone in the audience and saying, “So true.” It was at this point that the assembly lost its composure, breaking into a low rumble of laughter that continued as Trump paused, evidently waiting for it to stop, with a confused smile on his face. After a chuckle of his own, he quipped, “Didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s OK,” which prompted even louder laughter from the crowd.

According to CBS News, the giggles did die down long enough for Trump to complete his thought. He referenced job growth, tax cuts, and his crackdown on border security as evidence of the aforementioned “accomplishments,” concluding, “In other words, the United States is stronger, safer and a richer country than it was when I assumed office less than two years ago.”

Additionally, that boastful moment wasn’t the only one that had the U.N. laughing. Per CBS, later in Trump’s speech, the German delegation lost it when the POTUS claimed that “Germany will become totally dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course.”

As has now become commonplace, people have already dug up an old Trump tweet that perfectly contradicts his latest words and actions. Politico reports that in 2014, Trump tweeted, “We need a President who isn’t a laughing stock to the entire World.” The U.N. General Assembly may not be the entire world, but it is a pretty good representative sample.

Letitia James Wins Attorney General Primary In New York

New York could well be on its way to electing its first black female attorney general.

Letitia James overpowered three rivals in Thursday’s Democratic primary, likely paving the way for her to become New York’s top law enforcement officer—and the first woman of color elected statewide.

James, currently New York City public advocate, is a former Brooklyn councilwoman and public defender.

She still has to win November’s general election. But in a heavily Democratic New York, James is strongly favored to earn the post formerly held by Eric Schneiderman, who resigned in the wake of a New Yorker expose that detailed claims he abused women while publicly championing the #MeToo movement.

James carried the endorsement of Gov. Andrew Cuomo into her successful fight for the Democratic AG nomination against law professor and author Zephyr Teachout, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, and Verizon executive Leecia Eve.

In another closely watched match, Cuomo decisively defeated his own primary foe, Cynthia Nixon—although the actress and activist scored more than 30 percent of the vote in her underdog challenge against him.

A win’s a win, but Nixon’s voter percentage is notable for a sitting Democratic governor who has his own progressive bona fides…and whose name has been in the mix of potential 2020 presidential contenders (Cuomo did say during a debate with Nixon, however, that he’ll serve out his term as governor if re-elected in November.)

Nixon grabbed headlines with her bid to topple Cuomo—and not just as a former Sex and the City star or New York’s would-be first female—and openly LGBT—governor. She was always considered an major longshot to unseat incumbent Cuomo—even though his administration has been dogged by corruption scandals. But Nixon’s energetic campaign spoke to the core of an election season focused heavily on a flood of women entering the political arena and on progressives trying hard to push the Democratic establishment to the left.

“We have fundamentally changed the political landscape in this state,” Nixon said in her Thursday night concession speech.

“I see the future of the Democratic Party in this room tonight. The future of the Democratic Party is young, it is diverse, it is progressive; and yes, the future is female,” said Nixon, who fell short of becoming the sixteenth woman nominated for governor in a record-breaking midterm year.

The unapologetically liberal Nixon joined forces with attorney general hopeful Zephyr Teachout, who herself ran against Cuomo for governor four years ago. The two made appearances in front of Trump Tower in Manhattan, contrasting their left-leaning platforms with the Republican president’s conservative nationalism.

Teachout also stumped as a defiant progressive, vowing to wage legal war against Trump as the state’s top lawyer. She campaigned with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic socialist who shot to fame after defeating an entrenched New York congressman in a major upset. Teachout also showcased her pregnancy during the race, including in an ad that had her laying out her political plans while undergoing a sonogram.

But in the end, it was James who claimed victory, putting her an Election Day away from becoming the fourth black woman in the nation ever elected to an attorney general’s post, according to the non-partisan Gender Watch 2018 project.

“Tonight, we rewrite the history of generations of New Yorkers who have been treated differently simply because of their gender, the color of their skin, the language they speak, the God they pray to, the people they love, or the zip code they come from,” she said in thanking supporters after her win.

At another gathering, Cuomo fans, reportedly, had to hold their victory party without him.

The New Female Attorney General of New York Just Filed a Lawsuit Against Donald Trump—and Ivanka, Too

Barbara Underwood, New York state’s new Attorney General, filed a lawsuit this morning against President Donald Trump and three of his children—Ivanka, Don Jr., and Eric—alleging “persistently illegal conduct” connected to the Donald J. Trump Foundation. (Underwood assumed her role after Eric Schneiderman resigned following accusations of physical abuse by four women.)

Underwood has asked a court to dissolve the foundation and have its remaining assets distributed to other charities. She also wants Trump to pay $2.8 million in restitution and penalties.

“As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality,” Underwood said in a statement. “This is not how private foundations should function and my office intends to hold the foundation accountable for its misuse of charitable assets.”
She also said that she has notified the IRS and the Federal Election Commission about “possible violations” of tax law and federal campaign law.

For example, in 2007, he settled a dispute with the town of Palm Beach over code violations at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club. The town agreed to waive outstanding fines if Mar-a-Lago gave $100,000 to a charity. Instead, the money came from the foundation, as authorized by Trump himself.

The case also claims that the Foundation engaged in “unlawful political activity” in 2013 by cutting a $25,000 check to support the re-election of Republican Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R). At the time, Bondi’s office was considering whether to join an ongoing lawsuit by then NY AG Schneiderman alleging Trump had defrauded students at his now-defunct “Trump University.”

The suit accuses Trump of exploiting and misusing the Foundation to burnish his image during his run for president. It specifically says the charity broke rules against political activity by getting involved in an Iowa fundraiser for veterans that Trump held in 2016 instead of attending a Republican primary debate.

The three eldest Trump children are also named in the lawsuit because they have served as board members for years and as such are supposed to examine the allocation of funds to make sure they are not being misused. However, the suit states that this did not happen and that the board has actually not met since 1999.

Underwood is asking the court to bar Trump from serving as an officer of any New York charity or raising money for one for 10 years and to keep his three children from serving on non-profits or soliciting donations for them for one year. This could affect, for example, the Ivanka M. Trump Charitable Foundation which the First Daughter set up last year.

The Trumps have been frequent targets of accusations surrounding the use of the platform of the presidency for personal gain. The New York suit comes immediately after Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, both senior White House advisors, filed disclosure papers showing they pulled in at least $82 million in income in 2017.

Trump has already fired off two tweets about the suit calling the New York Democrats “sleazy,” honing in on Schneiderman (who did not, in fact, file the suit), and stating that he will not settle the case.

And the Trump Foundation released a statement that says, in part: “This is politics at its very worst. The Foundation has donated over $19 million to worthy charitable causes—more than it even received. The President himself—or through his companies—has contributed more than $8 million…The prior NYAG, who was recently forced to resign from office in disgrace, made it his stated mission to use this matter to not only advance his own political goals, but also for his own political fundraising. The acting NYAG’s recent statement that battling the White House is ‘the most important work (she) have ever done’ shows that such political attacks will continue unabated.”

Ivanka, Don Jr., and Eric have yet to comment.

Dana Nessel Campaign Ad for Michigan Attorney General Takes On Sexual Harassment

What a week. Doesn’t it already feel like Harry and Meghan announced their engagement 100 years ago?

After starting Monday off on such a happy note, the news cycles that followed have continued to focus on the sexual misconduct reckoning that started with Harvey Weinstein and show no signs of slowing. It’s important, obviously, and I hope it continues. But as a woman, it also weighs heavily on my spirit.

Never did I think the pick-me-up I so desperately needed would come in the form of a campaign ad from Dana Nessel, who is running for Attorney General in Michigan. But in 2017, up is down and anything is possible. I know what you’re thinking because I was thinking it too: “2018 campaign ads already? The midterms are so important but can’t we at least get through the holidays first?!?” But that’s just because you haven’t seen Nessel’s badass ad yet.

She opens by commenting that if recent news has taught us anything, it’s that more women are needed in office before launching into some 2017 real talk: “Who can you trust to not show you their penis in a professional setting? Is it the candidate who doesn’t have a penis? I’d say so.” This is where Dana Nessel became one of my new favorite people. She cemented her slot by going on to argue that there is nothing wrong with what could become an all-female Democratic ticket for major state offices. PS: Go Michigan!

Nessel then lays out what she will not do: Sexually harass her staff, tolerate sexual harassment in your workplace, walk around in a half-open bathrobe, use tax dollars to silence victims, or join right-wing lawsuits that make it harder to get health insurance.

And the kicker? She totally nails that, too. “Yes, I’m a woman. That’s not a liability, that’s an asset.”

Preach, Dana. Preach.
