This Model Is Giving Women in the Fashion Industry a Platform to Share Their Sexual Harassment Stories

The Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment and sexual assault scandal has taken down one of Hollywood’s most powerful power players and producers, and in the days that have followed the New York Times‘ bombshell report sharing women’s accounts of his misconduct, more women have stepped forward with their own accounts of business meetings or auditions that Weinstein allegedly set up to get women alone with him. For these women, the power dynamic was an undeniable factor in their encounters: pissing off Weinstein could essentially shutter their (often aspiring or beginning) careers in Hollywood, while to give in to his coercive alleged demands for a massage or more would compromise the person they were (not to mention leaving emotional scars).

Sadly, it’s not an usual dynamic: men in power across many industries have, not infrequently, taken advantage of women who had something to gain from a positive, professional relationship with them. The world of fashion isn’t immune to this, either—and one model, Cameron Russell, is taking a stand in Weinstein’s wake to give her colleagues, friends, and fellow models a platform to share their own accounts of abuse while on the job.

Her social media movement began when a friend reached out to Russell, and it has since spawned its own Twitter hashtag, #MyJobShouldNotIncludeAbuse, which has been buzzing with accounts from women or their experiences.

“We need a way to begin breaking the silence while remaining protected. We are not talking about one, five, or even twenty men,” wrote Russell in her initial post. “We are talking about a culture of exploitation and it must stop.”

The accounts don’t make for easy reading. Even more heartbreaking is the fact that many models begin working in the industry when they’re still underage. The fashion industry is also notorious for not setting up adequate protections for models—in the accounts below, more than one mentions being sent on a shoot alone to a photographer’s apartment or studio.

“We talked about how hard it is to share stories of assault. When they are the norm, calling them out can feel disruptive and unprofessional…” she continued. “And because the response has always been ‘are you surprised?’ or ‘that’s part of the job’ I tolerated them. When the offenses were bigger, calling them out is terrifying, and demands a level of exposure and backlash to what is already painful and sometimes shameful.”

Since this initial post, she’s shared the stories of dozens of others in the industry. Note: most of the accounts come with trigger warnings.

Russell also pointed out a telling sentence in one email: “It’s just the way he is.”

It’s also not only women who are the targets.

Russell’s work is opening up a new platform for women to band together—let’s hope that some real, effective change comes out of it. Some in the industry, like casting director James Scully, are actively working to make it a safer place for models, but there’s still a long, long way to go.

Are Taylor Swift and Harry Styles Performing at the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show?

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles infamously dated from December 2012 to January 2013. It was a short relationship, yes, but a memorable one. The photos of Swift and Styles walking together in a New York City park (see above) sent the pop-music world into a tizzy, and their breakup was even more of a big deal. Fans think Swift wrote two songs about Styles—”I Knew You Were Trouble,” from Red, and “Out of the Woods,” from 1989—though neither has been confirmed.

The two haven’t exactly had the most congenial relationship since their split, either. Remember the time they awkwardly passed each other while out with friends in January 2015? Or when Swift maybe dissed Styles at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards? To be fair, Styles did hint he has no hard feelings toward Swift in an interview with Rolling Stone, but the two haven’t exactly been photographed sharing endless appetizers at T.G.I. Fridays.

But that might change pretty soon. There’s a fan theory floating around the Internet right now that both Styles and Swift will perform at the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai next month. The evidence? This press release from the Shanghai Culture, Radio, Film and Television Administration Bureau, which states Styles and Swift each were issued administrative licenses to perform four songs in the city on November 20—right around the time the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is happening. November 28 is the exact air date, but the show is always filmed in advance.

Check the release out for yourself, below:

If this is true, it’d be Swift’s third time performing at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She hit the stage both in 2013 and 2014; coincidentally, it was at her first show where she met her now-BFF Karlie Kloss. This would be Styles’ first time performing at the event.

It’s unclear if Swift and Styles would sing together, though that seems unlikely. Swift will be in full Reputation promo mode at that time, so she’d probably take the opportunity to perform new material. But you never know! Either way, we’re on board with this quasi-reunion.

Jane Fonda, 79, Just Slayed the Runway at Paris Fashion Week

PHOTO: Dominique Charriau

Actress and icon Jane Fonda just made her runway debut, walking in L’Oreal’s Paris Fashion Week show Saturday night—and she gave the pros a run for their money.

All eyes were on the 79-year-old dressed in a floor-length zebra-print dress, an epic diamond choker, and a smokey eye as she walked down L’Oreal’s first-ever show on Paris’ Champs-Élysées. Fonda, of course, looked chill as hell, waving and throwing peace signs to seated fans. See for yourself below:

Other L’Oreal ambassadors including models Doutzen Kroes and Maria Borges, and fellow actress Helen Mirren also walked and sported a variety of L’Oreal makeup looks created by creative director, Val Garland.

Fonda’s no stranger to speaking openly about gaining confidence with age: She told Mind Body Green in 2016, “After I turned 60, I began to understand who I was, and I became young again. Now I’m in sight of my 80th birthday and feeling pretty good about life!” Still, there’s clearly a time and a place to discuss her looks. Last week, Fonda had a viral moment on NBC’s Megyn Kelly Today when the host took Fonda’s appearance on the show as an opportunity to pry about plastic surgery.

“You admit that you’ve had work done, which I think is to your credit. And you look amazing. Why did you say, I read that you said, you’re not proud to admit you had work done. Why not?” Kelly asked Fonda.

Fonda stared back at Kelly and said, “We really want to talk about that right now?” And then proceeded to pivot back to her new movie: “Good attitude, good posture, take care of myself — but let me tell you why I love this movie, Our Souls at Night, rather than plastic surgery.”

Gigi Hadid Wore $30 H&M Pants During Paris Fashion Week

There have been plenty of instances where a Gigi Hadid fashion moment has sent us straight to the nearest mall to try to cop her style. Every so often, though, the supermodel takes the guesswork out of the shopping experience by actually wearing a piece from one of our favorite affordable retailers—and, even more luckily, one that’s still in stock. That’s the case of the $30 H&M trousers she wore during Paris Fashion Week. Excuse us as we take out our credit cards.

Hadid was photographed in between appearances in Paris wearing a monochromatic look. She paired a gray sweatshirt with gray plaid pants and black studded mules. (Clearly, she’s been paying attention to the street-style trends from this season.) We’ve got the hoodie already—but should you be in the market for some sleek checked trousers for fall, head on over to H&M, where Hadid got her pair for a cool $29.99, according to a very exciting press release that just landed in our Inbox. Here’s the full look.

PHOTO: Pierre Suu

H&M’s stovepipe pants come in four different shades, but Hadid opted for gray houndstooth. And by some sort of shopping miracle, they’re still available on the brand’s website in most sizes.

We can’t image that’ll last very long, though: It’s not every day that a Hadid sister wears an outfit we can actually shop for less than $30 (before the shipping that’s added when we immediately order it, anyway). So get on it, friends—before we buy out the remaining stock.
