Evan Rachel Wood Calls Out Jim Hopper's 'Unacceptable' Behavior on Stranger Things

This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things. Consider yourself warned.

If you spent the Fourth of July weekend watching the latest season of Stranger Things on Netflix, you’re definitely not alone—in fact, over 40 million accounts tuned in.

But actor Evan Rachel Wood is one viewer who was less than thrilled with the third installment. More specifically, she felt the behavior of Jim Hopper (played by David Harbour) was “unacceptable” and took to Twitter to express her thoughts, igniting a heated conversation online. “You should never date a guy like the cop from #strangerthings,” she tweeted. “Extreme jealousy and violent rages are not flattering or sexy like TV would have you believe. That is all.”

She followed up in a thread, writing, “Yes I am aware its ‘just a show’ and its set ‘in the 80s’ even though this stuff was unacceptable then too, but thats exactly my point. It’s just a show and this is a gentle reminder not to fall for this crap in real life. Red flags galore.”

Many agreed with her. “YES, THANK YOU!!!! I was thinking this from the moment he manipulated Mike into breaking up with El. The man is chock-full of red flags,” one person tweeted. “Yeah, I’ve liked Hop generally, but this season the way he’s furious that his daughter is dating, & jealous of a guy who Joyce spoke to (despite emphasizing to her that it wasn’t a date) wasn’t a good look. He had a right to be upset at being stood up, but the Scott thing was ?,” another wrote.

But others didn’t agree with her criticism, citing both the time period the show takes place in and the fact that Hopper is a fictional character. “It was the 80’s. That’s how it was. I survived it and so should you,” one Twitter user wrote. Another added, “So now we should avoid writing flawed human beings into TV shows and film? Toxic masculinity was an unfortunate trait from the 80s, and probably the show is doing an accurate depiction of it through Hopper! Do I root for it? No.”

The conversations surrounding her initial tweet were so heated, Wood took to Twitter to address them again. “Cue all the abusive people attacking me on twitter for posting a warning not to fall for abusive behavior like a popular tv character exhibited on a popular show because it reminds them of themselves and they feel personally attacked?” she wrote. “Bring it on guys.”

“This isnt to say everyone who disagrees is an abuser,” she adds. “But it is very telling to see who agrees with the behavior.”

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters Have Reportedly Broken Up

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters have reportedly ended their relationship, Us Weekly reports. The couple first started dating in 2012 and became engaged the next year—but that being said, their relationship status has been both on and off over the years.

As of 2017, though, a source confirmed to Us Weekly Roberts and Peters were firmly together and engaged. They attended Vanity Fair‘s Oscars after-party 2018 looking very much like a couple.

But now is a different story. According to one of Us Weekly‘s sources, Roberts has reportedly moved on with actor Garrett Hedlund. The pair were recently spotted spending time together in Los Angeles.
“Garrett and Emma have been friends, but this is new, casual, and just a couple of weeks old,” the source says.

You probably recognize Hedlund from HBO’s series Mosaic, where he played Joel Hurley. He’s also appeared in movies like Triple Frontier and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which starred Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Joe Awyn.

Garrett Hedlund attends a movie premiere in Madrid.

Don’t worry, though: The source also alleges Roberts and Peters intend to remain friends, and that it “wasn’t a bad breakup.” “Emma and Evan were heading for a split and now are just friends,” the source says. “Evan has moved out.”

News of the reported split comes after the pair starred together in American Horror Story: Apocalypse. Peters has appeared on every season of AHS since the first in 2011. Meanwhile, Roberts has been in Coven, Freakshow, Cult, and Apocalypse, and is slated to star in the upcoming ninth season, which is still untitled. She also had a major role in Ryan Murphy’s short-lived Fox series Scream Queens.

Neither Emma Roberts nor Evan Peters has confirmed this news, so take it with a grain of salt for now. And, of course, it’s important to respect everyone’s privacy at this time.

Evan Rachel Wood Brought Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Amanda Nguyen as Her Plus-One to the 2018 Emmys

There wasn’t an organized Time’s Up or #MeToo protest at the 2018 Emmy Awards like there was at this year’s Golden Globes, but Evan Rachel Wood still found a way to speak out. While attending the ceremony on Monday night, Wood brought as her plus-one Amanda Nguyen, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in June for her work on behalf of survivors of sexual assault.

It’s especially notable given that many celebrities brought activists as their plus-ones to other award shows earlier this year, at the very forefront of the Time’s Up movement, but Wood was the only one to do so at the 2018 Emmys.

In an interview with E! News‘s Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet, Wood and Nguyen spoke about their work together; earlier this year, they both testified in front of Congress in support of the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights. “I think we’re at a crucial time in history right now for women, and especially for civil rights. You know, if I have even a little bit of power right now, I want to use it for good,” Wood said.

“I’m also here supporting the ACLU and the fight to reunite immigrant families separated at the border — that’s why I’m wearing the blue ribbon,” she added. “I just feel like it’s important. It’s what I’m called to do. Amanda’s certainly been someone who’s inspired me to do more.”

Nguyen also explained how she and Wood first met. “I gave the speech at the Women’s March and Evan was there. I saw Evan speak, of course, and then we just connected,” she said. “I’m so grateful, again, and it just makes such a difference when we get platforms like this to discuss issues.”

Nguyen, 26, is the founder of Rise, a nonprofit organization that works to expand the rights of assault survivors. In 2016, she helped to draft the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights, which sought to establish a universal standard for care for survivors and subsequently passed unanimously through Congress.

Evan Rachel Wood Says She'll Receive Equal Pay for 'Westworld' Season 3

Despite being one of the main characters and arguably the most recognizable face of Westworld, Evan Rachel Wood said she was not paid the same as her male colleagues for the first two seasons. That’s coming to an end, though: The actress just confirmed that she’ll receive equal pay in the third season of the hit HBO show. (Season two is set to premiere on April 22.)

“I think I’m just now to the point where I’m getting paid the same as my male co-stars,” Wood said in a recent interview with TheWrap. Specifically, her salary will now be the same as costars Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris, who play Dr. Ford and The Man in Black, respectively. “I was just told that, you know, ‘Hey you’re, you’re getting equal pay.’ And I was like,” she said, miming a gasp. “And I almost got emotional. I was like, ‘I have never been paid the same as my male counterparts … Never, never.’”

The change was not for lack of effort on the part of the star. Wood has been a vocal supporter of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements, but felt her status did not compare to that of the two legendary actors. “I’m always fighting for [equal pay],” Wood added. “And I have turned down projects [because of it]. Westworld, it’s like, I get it a little more,” she said laughing. “It’s like, ‘Well, you’re Anthony Hopkins or Ed Harris.’ But I think now we’re all doing equal amounts of work and really hard work.”

Earlier this month, HBO pledged to address the gender pay disparity and close the gap. “We’ve proactively gone through all of our shows—in fact, we just finished our process where we went through and made sure that there were no inappropriate disparities in pay; and where there were, if we found any, we corrected it going forward,” HBO executive Casey Bloys said in a recent interview.

“There is a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes. There is a lot of trying to make things equal and trying to make things fair. I don’t know, there is a lot of stuff,” Wood added, potentially referencing the recent changes at the company. “But this is the first time that somebody made a point of being like, ‘Hey you’re getting this. And you deserve it.’ And that was nice.”
