Amanda Seales Talks Fashion, Shopping, and Performance Outfits

Every single character on HBO’s Insecure is a joy to watch, but none quite as much, for me, as Tiffany DuBois. As one article put it, Tiffany “is the friend with more of her proverbial ‘shit’ together, and thinks that the petty drama that her friends deal with on a daily basis is a little beneath her. She’s annoying and pretentious, but she keeps her crew well-rounded.” She’s also obviously very funny, thanks to comedian Amanda Seales, who plays her.

I was looking forward to meeting Seales because I’m always curious about how the world’s busiest women dress—and she is definitely busy. In addition to shooting Insecure, the 38-year-old regularly performs stand-up, is the host of NBC’s Bring the Funny, has a weekly podcast, leverages her almost one million Instagram followers to educate on causes she feels strongly about, and lectures across college campuses. Now, Seales can add “author” to her list of jobs. Her book of essays and life advice, Small Doses: Potent Truths for Everyday Use, was released in October.

For our episode, Seales wanted to talk about what she wore when she first got onstage as a comic—silver and black sequined leggings and a plain top—and how that’s become her uniform while performing. The conversation around dressing as a female comedian is endlessly compelling to me—Seales says that when she was starting out, her goal was to avoid wearing anything she felt would start a conversation about the way she looked instead of her jokes. “I decided, you know what, I’m going to make the thing I wear leggings that are fun,” she says. “The theory being I want to be able to still show my shape because I like my shape and I feel like it’s a part of my version of femininity, but yet not wear something that I feel is going to be more of a conversation about aesthetics.”

The leggings she wears—often with elaborate prints like classic rap albums and ninjas riding unicorns—have become a signature, and Seales says that people regularly ask about where she gets them. “But they don’t know that this really just started as me trying to find a way to find a middle ground. I don’t know any guys that, before they go onstage, are thinking about, Do I wear the suit? Do I wear the zip-up hoodie? This polo collar might send the wrong idea.”

When I ask Seales where she gets her leggings, she is savvy: “I’m not going to say the site because they don’t pay me any money to say it.”

Seales and I also talk about fast fashion—she came in wearing a great acid green turtleneck from Zara and a puffy wrap coat from ASOS—but about luxury purchases too, including the neon pair of YSL stilettos she brought with her to our recording, the Rolex that she bought herself, which, she admits, she probably doesn’t really need, and the first pair of Gucci shoes she purchased when she realized she had income that could be considered disposable. We also discuss her mother’s cooking, having impressive vocabularies, and the concept of real friends in today’s debatably authentic Instagram age.

Enjoy the episode!

Amanda Bynes Says She Fought to Get Channing Tatum in *She's the Man*

Apparently, we have Amanda Bynes to thank for Channing Tatum’s acting career — well, according to Amanda Bynes, at least.

In her new interview with Paper magazine, the actress reveals she fought hard for Tatum to appear in her 2006 movie She’s the Man, which arguably launched his career. Prior to this, Tatum had done a few bit parts and, as Bynes points out, a Mountain Dew commercial.

“I totally fought for Channing [to get cast in] that movie because he wasn’t famous yet,” Bynes tells the publication. “He’d just done a Mountain Dew commercial and I was like, ‘This guy’s a star — every girl will love him!’ But [the producers] were like, ‘He’s so much older than all of you!’ And I was like, ‘It doesn’t matter! Trust me!'”

Thank God this happened, TBH. I mean, can you picture anyone else besides Tatum delivering such iconic lines in She’s the Man like “I’ve got to go change my feet?” No! He was born to play that role! Cheers to Bynes — and, well, Mountain Dew — for noticing his talent before the rest of the world.

This is one of the lighter anecdotes Bynes shares in her chat with Paper, which outlines her former substance abuse issues and eyebrow-raising behavior that made her tabloid fodder in 2013.

“I’ve been sober for almost four years now,” Bynes tells Paper, later adding, “I have no fear of the future. I’ve been through the worst and came out the other end and survived it so I just feel like it’s only up from here.”

Amanda Bynes: Be Careful With Drugs Because You Could ‘Lose It All Like I Did’

Amanda Bynes was among a circle of female celebrities in the late 2000s and early 2010s who were unfairly scrutinized by tabloids. For a while, it felt like every misstep—or just human moment—from Bynes was captured by the paparazzi and splashed across blogs. Criticizing her behavior became a vicious (and lucrative) sport, but Bynes stopped supplying fodder when she enrolled in fashion school in 2014, effectively disappearing from the public eye. She gave a brief interview last year to Hollyscoop, where she opened up about her well-documented tweets and previous experiences with drugs. In a new story from Paper magazine, though, Bynes delves deeper into her past.

“I started smoking marijuana when I was 16,” the actress says. “Even though everyone thought I was the ‘good girl,’ I did smoke marijuana from that point on. I didn’t get addicted [then] and I wasn’t abusing it. And I wasn’t going out and partying or making a fool of myself… yet.”

Her drug use intensified a few years after. “Later on it progressed to doing molly and ecstasy,” she said. “[I tried] cocaine three times but I never got high from cocaine. I never liked it. It was never my drug of choice…I definitely abused Adderall.”

It was a mixture of drugs and insecurity that prompted Bynes to abruptly quit acting in 2010, leaving her in a “dark, sad” place. This is when she started tweeting messages to celebrities—including, infamously, Drake—that she’s now “ashamed and embarrassed” of. “I can’t turn back time but if I could, I would. And I’m so sorry to whoever I hurt and whoever I lied about because it truly eats away at me,” she says.

Bynes 100 percent credits substance abuse to her behavior in those days. “I really feel ashamed of how those substances made me act,” she says. “When I was off of them, I was completely back to normal and immediately realized what I had done — it was like an alien had literally invaded my body.” She adds, “I know my behavior was strange, so people were trying to grasp at straws” figuring out what was going on.

Bynes is now four years sober, about to start work on a bachelor’s degree, and has a positive outlook. “My advice to anyone who is struggling with substance abuse would be to be really careful because drugs can really take a hold of your life,” she says “Everybody is different, obviously, but for me, the mixture of marijuana and whatever other drugs and sometimes drinking really messed up my brain. It really made me a completely different person. I actually am a nice person. I would never feel, say or do any of the things that I did and said to the people I hurt on Twitter.”

She continues, “There are gateway drugs and thankfully I never did heroin or meth or anything like that but certain things that you think are harmless, they may actually affect you in a more harmful way. Be really, really careful because you could lose it all and ruin your entire life like I did.”

Evan Rachel Wood Brought Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Amanda Nguyen as Her Plus-One to the 2018 Emmys

There wasn’t an organized Time’s Up or #MeToo protest at the 2018 Emmy Awards like there was at this year’s Golden Globes, but Evan Rachel Wood still found a way to speak out. While attending the ceremony on Monday night, Wood brought as her plus-one Amanda Nguyen, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in June for her work on behalf of survivors of sexual assault.

It’s especially notable given that many celebrities brought activists as their plus-ones to other award shows earlier this year, at the very forefront of the Time’s Up movement, but Wood was the only one to do so at the 2018 Emmys.

In an interview with E! News‘s Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet, Wood and Nguyen spoke about their work together; earlier this year, they both testified in front of Congress in support of the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights. “I think we’re at a crucial time in history right now for women, and especially for civil rights. You know, if I have even a little bit of power right now, I want to use it for good,” Wood said.

“I’m also here supporting the ACLU and the fight to reunite immigrant families separated at the border — that’s why I’m wearing the blue ribbon,” she added. “I just feel like it’s important. It’s what I’m called to do. Amanda’s certainly been someone who’s inspired me to do more.”

Nguyen also explained how she and Wood first met. “I gave the speech at the Women’s March and Evan was there. I saw Evan speak, of course, and then we just connected,” she said. “I’m so grateful, again, and it just makes such a difference when we get platforms like this to discuss issues.”

Nguyen, 26, is the founder of Rise, a nonprofit organization that works to expand the rights of assault survivors. In 2016, she helped to draft the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights, which sought to establish a universal standard for care for survivors and subsequently passed unanimously through Congress.

Amanda Stanton Says She's 'Embarrassed and Ashamed' Following Arrest

Amanda Stanton, a Bachelor Nation fan favorite who appeared on Ben Higgins’ season as well as two seasons of Bachelor in Paradise, says she’s “embarrassed and ashamed” following her arrest for alleged domestic battery early Monday morning (September 10).

Stanton’s team released a statement on Wednesday, September 12, about the incident to People. Read it, in full, below.

“Amanda is embarrassed and ashamed this happened and sincerely apologizes to hotel security and the Las Vegas Police Department. Amanda is a gentle, respectful person who has never gotten physical with anyone under any circumstance. That evening she had a few drinks at a bachelorette party and when hotel security asked her and Bobby to quiet down, she got a bit rambunctious. Amanda gave Bobby what she thought was a playful shove; hotel security did their job and reported the incident to the police, who in turn did their job. Despite Bobby explaining this was not an ill-intended shove, the police still had to do their job which Amanda completely respects and understands.”

According to TMZ, hotel security for The Encore in Las Vegas responded to a noise complaint early Monday morning. When they arrived, Stanton reportedly shoved her boyfriend, Bobby Jacobs, which prompted security to call the police. People reports another altercation happened between Stanton and Jacobs when the police arrived, leading to her arrest. She was released later that day, per TMZ.

Stanton shared a photo of her and Jacobs on a flight together on Tuesday after she was released. The two have been dating since the spring. (Jacobs is a professional volleyball player.) She hasn’t personally said anything on social media about what happened, but stay tuned.
