Kim Kardashian Faces Backlash After Claiming She Has 'Nothing Bad to Say' About Donald Trump


Kim Kardashian West turned heads when it was announced she would be meeting with Donald Trump in May to advocate for the release of Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old great-grandmother who had been serving life in prison for a non-violent drug charge. Her efforts worked—Trump commuted Johnson’s sentence, but that hasn’t stopped people from calling out his other policies and the West family’s alignment with the administration.

The backlash continued to pile up on Monday, after Kardashian went on Jimmy Kimmel Live, telling the host she had “nothing bad to say about the president.”

On the show, Kardashian explained she wanted to discuss Johnson’s case with Trump because she “knew there was only one person in power that could make this change and get this woman out of prison.” She added that she has a list of people in prison that she wants to take to Trump, and said she is “very grateful and very hopeful that more good things are going to come out of our conversations.”

She also tried to explain her husband Kanye West’s controversial endorsements of the president. On social media, West has gone on several rants supporting Trump, and his inflammatory tweets have included everything from calling Trump “his brother” to posting pictures of a Make America Great Again hat.

“To make it clear, we’d talk about it and his policies, and he doesn’t necessarily agree with his policies. He likes his personality…and how he made it to be president when everybody really underestimated him,” she said, adding, “He’s not political so he doesn’t dig deep into what’s going on.”

Following the Kimmel interview, Twitter quickly took Kardashian to task, calling her uninformed and pointing out policies the Trump administration has initiated that deserve scrutiny, including the separation of children at the border. Critics also took offense to the tone of the interview—Kardashian laughed and joked that she had been naked when Trump called to tell her he had commuted Johnson’s sentence.

Kardashian’s comments don’t address insults Trump has made about her in the past. In a 2013 interview with Howard Stern, Trump made crude remarks about her physical appearance, saying, “Does she have a good body? No. Does she have a fat ass? Absolutely.”

Others have questioned how committed Kardashian is to prison reform. On social media, many dismissed her initial meeting with Trump as a publicity stunt that benefits both reality show stars.

Stacey Abrams Has to Beat Donald Trump's Guy to Become America's First Black Woman Governor


It’s on.

Democrat Stacey Abrams has an opponent in her quest to become Georgia’s next governor. The Yale-trained attorney will take on Republican Brian Kemp in the race, drawing the eyes of the nation to a pivotal November contest between a progressive black woman and a pro-Trump conservative man.

Abrams is campaigning to become the first black woman governor in U.S. history. A businesswoman and writer, she was the first female leader of her state’s General Assembly. On the other side is Kemp, who is currently Georgia’s sitting secretary of state and a former state senator. President Donald Trump endorsed him as “tough on crime, strong on the border and illegal immigration”—helping him defeat Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle in Tuesday’s Republican primary for governor to become his party’s nominee.

Now Abrams and Kemp will duke it out to succeed Republican Governor Nathan Deal, who can’t run again because of term limits. Their showdown highlights a coast-to-coast midterm battle between Republicans who embrace Trump’s economic and social agenda and the Democrats who passionately reject it.

Abrams got her shot at Georgia’s highest office after the backing of A-list supporters and strong fund-raising helped her win a May Democratic primary showdown against a somewhat more moderate white candidate, Stacey Evans.

But with an opponent who is a Trump favorite in the other corner, how will Abrams fare? Audrey Haynes, University of Georgia associate professor of political science, says she has a tough fight ahead of her.

She expects the possibility of an Abrams win will energize Democrats, including black women voters, who have been key players in many of this cycle’s highest-profile elections, especially at a time when America has just six sitting female governors and not a single state with a black chief executive.

But Georgia went for Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, and has yet to join the ranks of swing states that neither Republicans nor Democrats can consider a lock. (In fact, Georgia has not elected a Democratic governor since 1998.)

That same excitement could also emerge among Republican voters who want to use the midterms as a show of support for Trump and his chosen candidates, including people like Kemp, whose campaign featured an ad in which he proudly proclaimed himself a “politically incorrect conservative” who’d even use his “big truck” to “round up criminal illegals” personally.

A Brian Kemp for Governor ad

Bring it on, says Abrams, who’s running on a platform that emphasizes criminal justice reform and economic opportunity and who tweeted that she’d be proud to join the ranks of Democrats Trump has campaigned against.

Kemp, meanwhile, tweeted his thanks to Trump and said he looks forward to working with his former rival Cagle “to defeat Stacey Abrams and her radical, left-wing backers!” He promises to be a governor who will defend the rights of gun owners, fight crime, and cut government regulations.

Come November “I would predict that turnout will be high. People are passionate,” Haynes told Glamour via email. “I suspect that President Trump will make an appearance, and I am sure that the Abrams campaign would love to see him go off script and deliver a message that they can use to motivate their voters, particularly women, to turn out.”

Individually, “Kemp has shown that he can campaign, stay on message, build bridges to his intra-party opponents, and stump well. Abrams is a very good communicator, can raise money, stay on message, and can campaign as well. Both come into the general election with some baggage that will be the content of a multitude of negative ads from a host of super PACs and such,” Haynes told Glamour.

For Abrams, that baggage includes her admission of racking up significant personal debt. Kemp’s critics, meanwhile, say his political ambitions have been financed by some of the same people whose businesses he oversees as secretary of state.

“In the end, this will be a contest of ideas—whose do you like better—and one’s existing partisanship may have already decided that in a very polarized political environment,” Haynes said. “It will be a contest of organization, who can mobilize, and it will be a contest of endurance [as to] who can campaign to the very end. Those of us who study politics are watching to see what will happen.”

And with the nation’s eyes laser-focused on a race that could go down in the history books, they won’t be alone.

Donald Trump Reportedly Broke Royal Protocol Multiple Times When Meeting With Queen Elizabeth II


Donald Trump caused a major Twitter storm last week when he reportedly kept Queen Elizabeth II waiting for about 15 minutes. But this was far from the only faux pas he allegedly committed that day. According to news reports, the president went on to break royal protocol multiple times during his meeting with the queen.

The New York Times reports that both the president and First Lady Melania Trump forgot to bow and curtsy when meeting Queen Elizabeth II, as is customary. Then, Trump walked in front of the 92-year-old monarch, which the Times writes is a “royal no-no.” Footage of the awkward moment shows him stopping in front of her at one point, cutting her off, and making her walk around him. The third snafu happened after the meeting. On Monday, Good Morning Britain aired an interview Trump did with host Piers Morgan, in which he recalled the queen saying Brexit was “a very complex problem.” Time reports that heads of state revealing their conversations with the queen is a breach of protocol.

Buckingham Palace shot down reports and rumors that Prince Charles and Prince William intentionally snubbed Trump by not attending his meeting with the queen. “It was entirely in line with standard practice for guest of government visits [for] The Queen to receive the President and First Lady,” a palace spokesperson said, according to The Independent. “The arrangements were mutually agreed between the Palace and the U.K. and U.S. governments. There was never a suggestion that other members of the royal family would take part.”

The New Female Attorney General of New York Just Filed a Lawsuit Against Donald Trump—and Ivanka, Too


Barbara Underwood, New York state’s new Attorney General, filed a lawsuit this morning against President Donald Trump and three of his children—Ivanka, Don Jr., and Eric—alleging “persistently illegal conduct” connected to the Donald J. Trump Foundation. (Underwood assumed her role after Eric Schneiderman resigned following accusations of physical abuse by four women.)

Underwood has asked a court to dissolve the foundation and have its remaining assets distributed to other charities. She also wants Trump to pay $2.8 million in restitution and penalties.

“As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality,” Underwood said in a statement. “This is not how private foundations should function and my office intends to hold the foundation accountable for its misuse of charitable assets.”
She also said that she has notified the IRS and the Federal Election Commission about “possible violations” of tax law and federal campaign law.

For example, in 2007, he settled a dispute with the town of Palm Beach over code violations at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club. The town agreed to waive outstanding fines if Mar-a-Lago gave $100,000 to a charity. Instead, the money came from the foundation, as authorized by Trump himself.

The case also claims that the Foundation engaged in “unlawful political activity” in 2013 by cutting a $25,000 check to support the re-election of Republican Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R). At the time, Bondi’s office was considering whether to join an ongoing lawsuit by then NY AG Schneiderman alleging Trump had defrauded students at his now-defunct “Trump University.”

The suit accuses Trump of exploiting and misusing the Foundation to burnish his image during his run for president. It specifically says the charity broke rules against political activity by getting involved in an Iowa fundraiser for veterans that Trump held in 2016 instead of attending a Republican primary debate.

The three eldest Trump children are also named in the lawsuit because they have served as board members for years and as such are supposed to examine the allocation of funds to make sure they are not being misused. However, the suit states that this did not happen and that the board has actually not met since 1999.

Underwood is asking the court to bar Trump from serving as an officer of any New York charity or raising money for one for 10 years and to keep his three children from serving on non-profits or soliciting donations for them for one year. This could affect, for example, the Ivanka M. Trump Charitable Foundation which the First Daughter set up last year.

The Trumps have been frequent targets of accusations surrounding the use of the platform of the presidency for personal gain. The New York suit comes immediately after Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, both senior White House advisors, filed disclosure papers showing they pulled in at least $82 million in income in 2017.

Trump has already fired off two tweets about the suit calling the New York Democrats “sleazy,” honing in on Schneiderman (who did not, in fact, file the suit), and stating that he will not settle the case.

And the Trump Foundation released a statement that says, in part: “This is politics at its very worst. The Foundation has donated over $19 million to worthy charitable causes—more than it even received. The President himself—or through his companies—has contributed more than $8 million…The prior NYAG, who was recently forced to resign from office in disgrace, made it his stated mission to use this matter to not only advance his own political goals, but also for his own political fundraising. The acting NYAG’s recent statement that battling the White House is ‘the most important work (she) have ever done’ shows that such political attacks will continue unabated.”

Ivanka, Don Jr., and Eric have yet to comment.

Donald Trump Walked in Late to a Women's Empowerment Breakfast at the G7


If you’re going to do the G7 summit, political protocol implies that you do the thing. Unfortunately Donald Trump walked in late to a breakfast hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was also ultimately the host of the Quebec-based summit. The Saturday morning meeting was reportedly on the topic of women’s empowerment and advancing gender equality.

The breakfast was shared between G7 leaders—that’s Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., the U.S., and the EU—and a “gender equality advisory council” that Trudeau had put together especially for the summit, according to the Toronto Star. It’s the kind of thing you want to be on time for.

Trump reportedly missed Trudeau’s opening remarks and walked in when Isabelle Hudon, Canada’s ambassador to France and co-chair of the gender equality advisory council, was speaking. The sound of the cameras capturing his entrance almost drowned out what she was saying, reports the Star.

Speaking of the cameras, his entrance was indeed captured.

Whether Trump took tea or covfefe at the breakfast isn’t known. What is, however, is that he reportedly didn’t make too many friends at the G7—which, considering all the global leaders there, isn’t great. Between Twitter rants about U.S. trade and on-the-record statements about cutting off all trade from G7 countries, it was…a lot.

Perhaps Merkel’s Instagram sums up the mood best:

Trump left the summit early yesterday to fly to Singapore, where, reportedly, a summit will take place between Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

Kim Kardashian Discusses What Happened During Her White House Meeting With Donald Trump


Kim Kardashian revealed a few details about her White House meeting with Donald Trump on Wednesday, telling Mic that she felt the president “spent the time to listen” as she made her case for why Alice Johnson, a 63-year-old grandmother sentenced to life without parole, deserves to be pardoned.

“I think that he really spent the time to listen to our case that we’re making for Alice,” she said. “He really understood, and I am very hopeful that this will turn out really positively I hope.”

Kardashian sat down with Trump in the Oval Office, following reports that she had been organizing a meeting with him for weeks through Jared Kushner. Kardashian reportedly wanted to discuss prison reform, and in particular the case of Johnson, who she has been advocating for since coming across her story on a Mic video about Johnson’s prison sentence, handed down after a non-violent, first time drug offense 21 years prior.

She attended Wednesday’s meeting with her attorney Shawn Chapman Holley, who outlined Johnson’s case.

Trump tweeted about the meeting, saying, “Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing.” Following their Wednesday meeting, the president did announce a pardon—this time for conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza, who was convicted of campaign finance violations. Trump also signaled he might extend clemency to former Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich of Illinois and Martha Stewart, but has not made his plans for Johnson clear.

Johnson has been the subject of much publicity after her story went viral. She was imprisoned for drug conspiracy and money laundering and, to the consternation of many, is not eligible for parole. Kardashian told Mic she feels Johnson has rehabilitated herself and has a lot waiting for her outside of prison, were she to be pardoned.

“I just feel really strongly that she has such a good support system,” she said. “She has a job waiting for her, she has a home to go to, and she has such a great, supportive family. Even seeing the work that she’s done while she’s in prison, knowing that she would never get out. She hasn’t had one disciplinary infraction since she’s been in prison in 21 and a half years.”

Kardashian’s trip to Washington was met with criticism on social media as many wondered if she was the best person to discuss prison reform. Kardashian said that while she didn’t have personal experience with the topic, she felt a “simple connection” to Johnson and would continue to fight to give her a “second chance at life.”

“If it takes me to go and talk to the highest person in power, the only person that can make this happen, which is President Trump, then I will definitely do that,” she said.
