Minnie Driver Slams Ex-Boyfriend Matt Damon Over Sexual Harassment Comment

Over the past week or so, Matt Damon has been on the press circuit promoting his new movie Downsizing, which actually looks pretty interesting. But I haven’t been able to think much about that because I’ve been too busy feeling annoyed every time he opens his mouth to speak about sexual harassment in Hollywood.

First let me just say that, generally speaking, Matt Damon seems like a pretty nice guy. But a lot of nice guys have some pretty terrible opinions when it comes to women’s issues, and he might just be one of them. Obviously, Damon’s big break (Good Will Hunting) came via Harvey Weinstein and Miramax, but that shouldn’t necessarily be held against him. I still love that movie deeply and have the Elliot Smith–laden soundtrack in heavy rotation. However, my favorable opinions of the actor are quickly taking a turn. And his ex-girlfriend Minnie Driver—who famously found out they were broken up via an interview on Oprah—agrees, as she took to Twitter to express her distaste for a recent interview the actor did with ABC News.

The main quote in question starts out fine and then veers into problematic territory. Damon said:

“I think we’re in this watershed moment. I think it’s great. I think
it’s wonderful that women are feeling empowered to tell their
stories, and it’s totally necessary…. I do believe that there’s a spectrum
of behavior, right? And we’re going to have to figure—you know,
there’s a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt
and rape or child molestation, right? Both of those behaviors need
to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they
shouldn’t be conflated, right? You know, we see somebody like
Al Franken, right?—I personally would have preferred if they
had an Ethics Committee investigation, you know what I
mean? It’s like at what point—you know, we’re so energized
to kind of get retribution, I think.

“And we live in this culture of outrage and injury, and, you know,
that we’re going to have to correct enough to kind of go, ‘Wait
a minute. None of us came here perfect.’ You know what I
mean?… The Louis C.K. thing, I don’t know all the details.
I don’t do deep dives on this, but I did see his statement, which
kind of, which [was] arresting to me. When he came out and
said, “I did this. I did these things. These women are all telling
the truth.” And I just remember thinking, ‘Well, that’s the sign
of somebody who—well, we can work with that’…”

Please, just stop. Don’t tell women that we need to self-correct our outrage when we’ve been the ones dealing with moments of harassment—both big and small—for all these years. Driver expressed exasperation over Damon’s initial comments and then further clarified her comments to the Guardian, saying, “I felt I desperately needed to say something. I’ve realised that most men, good men, the men that I love, there is a cutoff in their ability to understand. They simply cannot understand what abuse is like on a daily level. I honestly think that until we get on the same page, you can’t tell a woman about their abuse. A man cannot do that. No one can. It is so individual and so personal, it’s galling when a powerful man steps up and starts dictating the terms, whether he intends it or not.”

Alyssa Milano had some thoughts too.

But it wasn’t just one quote that has Damon in hot water. He has also said of a hypothetical colleague, “If it’s a colleague…I don’t know…I guess it depends on the situation and the allegation and how believable I think it is.” And of Harvey Weinstein: “I knew I wouldn’t want him married to anyone close to me. But that was the extent of what we knew, you know? And that wasn’t a surprise to anybody. So when you hear ‘Harvey this, Harvey that’—I mean, look at the guy. Of course he’s a womanizer…. I mean, I don’t hang out with him.”

Until Matt Damon figures out how to speak more thoughtfully about the issue, maybe it would be best if he just said nothing at all.

Taylor Swift's Latest Instagram Comment Is Drawing Ire From Fans

Talk to any Taylor Swift fan, and they’ll likely lament about how upsetting it’s been that their gal hasn’t been doing much press to coincide with her new album, Reputation. Despite an occasional Twitter message here and Instagram photo there, Tay has remained unusually silent throughout the whole year, likely because she just wants her new music to speak for itself.

That’s why it was a surprise when Taylor took to her Instagram page on Wednesday to write a little message to her fans to celebrate her 28th birthday. “I love you guys so much. This was a photo @paul_sidoti took at @capitalofficial Jingle Bell Ball in London a few days ago. I couldn’t have asked for a better year, all thanks to you,” she wrote. “Thanks for all the birthday wishes. Can’t wait to see what 28 will be like. See you on tour.”

However, despite the benign comment, many people on the Internet haven’t kindly received her “better year” sentiment. While Taylor may have had a good year winning a court case (and speaking up for survivors of sexual harassment), releasing an album, and being named a Time Person of the Year (alongside many other “silence breakers”), 2017 hasn’t been a great (or even average) year for a lot of people in the country. “Ya truly what could have gone better in 2017,” one Twitter user posited. “I need enough money to buy the privilege to be oblivious to everything,” another added. “To be fair, it’s been a good year for rich people,” a third joked. “I mean, the country is basically in flames, but at least T. Swift is doing alright!” another person noted.

Damn. Here’s hoping 2018 is better for all of us.

'The Big Bang Theory' Season 11 Episode 7 Recap: Penny Shuts Down Sheldon's Slut Shaming Comment

A quick recap of tonight’s Big Bang Theory episode would go something like this: Sheldon and Bert collaborated on a Geology project, but Sheldon didn’t want anyone to know; Raj went on a date with Bernadette’s co-worker, Ruchi, and later hooked up with her; and, sadly, Amy and Bernadette didn’t have much to do.

But perhaps the best—and potentially most over-looked—part of “The Geology Methodology” was the continuation of #JusticeforPenny (that’s right, Stranger Things 2 isn’t the only show that gets the justice hashtag).

Last week, Penny got revenge for years of blonde dumb jokes by effortlessly taking care of baby Halley, resulting in Halley saying her first word—”mama”—to Penny. The week before, Penny pulled off the near impossible by learning how to expertly handle an immature Sheldon.

And tonight, Penny continued her ascent as the season’s best character by masterfully putting Sheldon in his place after he attempted to slut-shame her. It all started with Sheldon coming to Penny for work advice, saying he’ll ruin his reputation if anyone finds out he’s working on a Geology project. Penny gives her opinion, but Sheldon can’t make up his mind whether or not to take it, which prompts the following exchange:

Penny: This is about science. Why’d you come to me?

Sheldon: Because it’s also about reputation. And somehow, you managed to hold your head high despite your checkered past.

Penny: Checkered past?

Sheldon: It’s a figure of speech referring to how sexually promiscuous you were.

Penny: Really?! Well I’ve got a figure of speech about how sexually promiscuous you can go be with yourself.

Sheldon being Sheldon, he had no idea what that was in reference to. For the rest of us, it was a great response to a ridiculous remark. For one, having casual—and hopefully safe—sex is nothing to be ashamed about. And two, it’s none of Sheldon’s business what Penny does in private. What’s even more ironic is that at the same time Sheldon is slut-shaming Penny, in another scene Bernadette and Howard are pushing Raj to have casual sex with Ruchi. Once again, the narrative is that it’s OK for a guy to have casual sex—but, according to Sheldon, a woman has a “checkered past” if she conducts her life in the same manner. SMH.

Later in the episode, Raj pays a visit to Penny’s therapy corner kitchen (I mean, she should start charging a fee at this point) and asks for advice with Ruchi. When Raj tries to convince Penny that he can handle a casual relationship, and Penny serves up the honest truth in the form of facial expressions and jumbled laughs, Raj wants to know why she keeps “doing that with your face?” Her response: “Because you keep saying stupid things with yours!”

Clearly, Penny is not here for anyone’s stupidity. The only crime is that her role in this episode was to service Raj and Sheldon’s story, and not her own. Hopefully, we’ll see more #JusticeForPenny as this season of The Big Bang Theory continues.

Prince William Responds With a Laugh to Comment About Prince Harry's Rumored Engagement

PHOTO: Karwai Tang/WireImage/Getty Images

The royal family is staying mum on the topic of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s engagement—namely, whether it already happened or will be happening in the very near future. Most recently Prince William deflected a comment about his younger brother’s potential nuptials with the tried-and-true strategy of laughing awkwardly and changing the subject.

According to People, William paid a visit to William Cowley Parchment Makers, which provides the vellum used for royal and Parliament documents, in the English town of Milton Keynes on Tuesday. Paul Wright, William Cowley’s general manager, told the magazine that he oh-so-casually mentioned to Will that “if Prince Harry marries Meghan, then his certificate will be in our vellum.” In response, William “just laughed—a nice laugh,” Wright said.

Although it’s not much to go on, Prince William’s “nice laugh” is the only comment any member of the royal family has made regarding the engagement (besides Markle’s own coy, wordless smile when asked earlier this summer whether she was planning on taking a trip down the aisle anytime soon), so feel free to perform an unnecessarily deep, obsessive analysis on this sparing report.

The “nice laugh” heard ’round the world took place less than 24 hours after Markle and Prince Harry made their first joint appearance at the Invictus Games in Toronto. On Monday the lovebirds attended a wheelchair tennis match together and then held hands (!) while walking around the event grounds. Notably, the Suits actress was wearing a white button-down shirt from designer Misha Nonoo that’s called the—wait for it—Husband blouse. Be still, our British-royals-loving hearts.

Engagement rumors have been swirling around Harry, 33, and Markle, 36, for months. In July multiple sources reported that a proposal was “fast approaching.” The rumors only increased when, in the span of a few weeks in late August and early September, Harry was reported to be working closely with a jeweler, the pair vacationed in the exact same location in Africa where Prince Harry proposed to Kate, and Markle met Queen Elizabeth.

And if all of that weren’t enough confirmation that an engagement is truly imminent, Markle finally broke her silence on the one-year relationship in the October issue of Vanity Fair. “We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she said. “We’re a couple. We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
