Emilia Clarke Says She's a Better Feminist Because of Daenerys Targaryen and 'Game of Thrones'

While Game of Thrones‘s Daenerys Targaryen has undoubtedly inspired innumerable women all over the world to embrace their inner queens, she’s undoubtedly had her most profound impact on one in particular: Emilia Clarke, the Khaleesi’s IRL alter ego. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Clarke explained how playing Dany onscreen for the past seven years has taught her more about female empowerment and to embrace her feminism.

“It’s given me a real insight into what it feels like to be a woman who stands up to inequality and hate,” she said. “And as [Daenerys] has become more empowered as a woman, you can’t hide any more. You are adding to the voices that are going to make people realize an equal society is what we’re aiming for.” Clarke shared that, because she grew up with her mother as the primary breadwinner in her household, seeing women in positions of power has always been the norm for her. “That’s the lens through which I’ve been fortunate enough to view the world,” she said. “It’s only when you go to school that you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s different, that’s weird.'”

As intertwined as Dany and Clarke have become over the past several years (blonde hair included), however, the British actress revealed that she has no idea how Dany’s story ends in the show’s final season, set to premiere sometime in 2019. “They’ve written a number of different endings, so none of the cast know what the actual ending is. If there’s ever a leak of any kind, don’t believe it, because it’s probably not true,” she said. “We have a very strict social media ban this year because people need to stop spoiling it for everyone. It’s really frustrating.”

Clarke’s GoT costars have also spoken about the upcoming ending of the hit fantasy series. In October, her onscreen love interest-slash-nephew Kit Harington revealed that a table read of the final episode had brought him to tears. “We had a read through last week in fact, so I know everything now,” he told BBC’s The One Show at the time. “I cried at the end. You have to remember that eight years of it—no one really cares about it more than us.”

Emilia Clarke Is Tired of People Criticizing the Sex Scenes on 'Game of Thrones'

Game of Thrones is one of the most beloved shows on television, but there’s one element to it that’s quite polarizing: the sex scenes.

GoT is infamous for its gratuitous—and sometimes problematic—sex. It’s part of why so many people love the show…and why others hate it. Granted, much of the criticism concerning the nudity on GoT is valid (it has depicted sexual violence against women on several occasions) but not all of it. There’s a certain subset of fans who’re just annoyed by the amount of sex—consensual, good, healthy sex—that Game of Thrones shows. And that’s the chatter Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, has an issue with.

“I’m starting to get really annoyed about this stuff now because people say, ‘Oh, yeah, all the porn sites went down when Game of Thrones came back on.’ I’m like, The Handmaid’s Tale? I fucking love that show, and I cried when it ended because I couldn’t handle not seeing it. That is all sex and nudity. There are so many shows centered around this very true fact that people reproduce,” Clarke told Harper’s Bazaar for its December/January issue. “People fuck for pleasure—it’s part of life.”

Clarke expressed similar sentiments back in March when she wrote an essay for The Huffington Post. “If you’ve watched Game of Thrones then, spoiler, you will have seen me in the nude,” she wrote. “There are plenty of ways in which people want me to respond to questions about this fact. And plenty of reasons why I do not feel the need to justify myself.”

Retweet. Whether you like the sex scenes on Game of Thrones or not, it shouldn’t have to be Clarke’s job to defend them. (It’s funny how the male actors on the show are rarely ask about their nudity.) At the end of the day, she’s an actress doing her job—and if she’s comfortable, that’s all that matters.

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington Frolic in the Streets of Italy for Dolce & Gabbana's New Campaign

If you watch Game of Thrones, or if you don’t watch but do exist on the Internet, you probably have some sort of feelings about the Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen relationship. For the latter crowd, a quick catch-up: Kit Harington’s Snow and Emilia Clarke’s Targaryen had some major sexual tension all season, and just as they got together, viewers found out the two were aunt and nephew. Yep. Cue the most mixed emotions an incest plotline has ever created, and to top it off, we’ve now got an entire year to stew in it before the show returns next summer. That’s the bad news. The good? The duo were cast to front Dolce & Gabbana’s newest fragrance campaign back in March, and a slew of videos just landed to stir our thirst.

Shot in Italy, the design house has graced us with four promo videos for The One Eau de Parfum and The One for Men (both $67). Clarke’s video begins with her walking the streets of Naples. Someone gives her a bouquet of flowers, there’s dancing, she eats a huge bowl of pasta. It feels a little bit like an idealized dream vacation. But, nope! Filmmaker Matteo Garrone shot the videos with city locals, so this is real-deal, genuine cultural warmth.

Beautiful, all very well and good, but with the memory of Jon Snow’s butt still fresh, the Harington video is where it’s at. Following the same concept, Harington walks through the city smiling more than he has ever and probably will ever on Game of Thrones. (No brooding here.) He waves at an incredibly lucky person. He double-kisses an older woman like he’s known her for many years. He does that sexy dance-clapping thing; he is surrounded by a crowd of loving, happy-looking people, with pizza.

Sorry, but where was our invite to this pizza party in the streets of Italy, where we can find out what Jon Snow smells like? Lost in the mail, we can only assume.

Dolce & Gabbana also released two behind the scenes videos from the making of the campaign. Major takeaways: the people of Naples are fantastic, and yeah, we’re incredibly jealous.

These are both directors cuts, so in all likelihood, a campaign of Clarke and Harington together is probably on the way. (Otherwise, come on, missed opportunity of a lifetime.) The One for Men has been around since 2008, but Eau de Parfum is brand new, a combination of madonna lily, bergamot, and white peach that’s rolling out in stores as we write.

The brand describes it as a “sensual scent,” so fingers crossed we won’t have to wait until 2019 to see sparks fly between Clarke and Harington. We’ll take whatever we can get.

Emilia Clarke Just Called This 'Game of Thrones' Character 'The One' For Daenerys

One of the biggest questions Game of Thrones fans have on their minds this season is whether or not Jon and Daenerys will get together—like, sexxxually. Yes, Dany is Jon’s aunt, but incest is just as common as dragons on this show. (Heck, the first episode of GoT ever featured Cersei and and Jaime getting it on.) The sexual tension between these two characters is off the charts. Re-watch the cave scene from episode four if you’re skeptical—it’ll seriously make you sweat.

But Emilia Clarke might’ve just shut down this theory. In a post-show interview published on HBO’s YouTube page, Clarke dropped a subtle hint about who Daenerys ends up with—and it wasn’t Jon.

“The thing about Ser Jorah is that he has been the one from the very beginning,” Dany said. “I think he has an ability to see right through [Dany].”

Wait…so Ser Jorah is the man Dany rides off into the sunset with? That would be…strange. It’s pretty obvious that Ser Jorah is ride-or-die for Dany, but they never seemed like The Couple. According to Clarke’s quote, though, Ser Jorah is The One—so what the hell is happening?

And to add fuel to this fire, Clarke also said not to “read into” the scene between Jon and Dany on the cliff—ya know, the one where Dany is clearly turned on by the way Jon interacts with her dragons. It seems like this ship is officially shipwrecked, people.

Watch Clarke’s interview for yourself, below:

Of course, it’s totally possible Clarke’s quote doesn’t mean anything and this is just another example of the GoT cast gas-lighting America. Looks like we’ll just have to keep watching to find out for sure.
