Real Women of Are Sharing Bikini Selfies on Instagram Because of the Jennifer Lopez Challenge

Jennifer Lopez unintentionally started a viral body positivity challenge on Instagram after her latest selfie inspired women of all ages to post bikini photos with the hashtag #JLoChallenge.

Between performing in the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show, starring as a seasoned stripper/scammer in Hustlers, continuing to rock that green Versace dress, the 50-year-old mother of two becomes more of an icon by the day.

On February 16, the singer and actor star posted a mirror selfie of herself in a white bikini on Instagram. She captioned the snap “relaxed and recharged,” but little did she know this was the beginning of the latest social media movement. Aside from those toned abs (which, damn), the viral challenge is about more than looking good”—it’s about the power women’s bodies have at all ages and sizes.

J. Lo’s post inspired women across the social media platform to post their own version of her selfie, as well as share why they’ve decided to step outside their comfort zones. Maria Kang, a health and fitness influencer and founder of No Excuses Mom, was one of the first to share a photo of herself in a white bikini alongside an important message to moms.

“Thank you @jlo for inspiring this spontaneous pic in a white bikini this morning,” she captioned her post. “Not a celebrity. Not getting millions to look great in a movie (hello, Hustlers! ? or dating a hot athlete (although my hubby is kinda cute!) BUT, it doesn’t matter… Own your story.”

The 39-year-old continued: “If she can do it, if I can do it, if thousands of working moms who come in all sizes, shapes, and ages can do it—then YOU CAN DO IT!!!⁣” She then encouraged her 77,000 followers to post their own bathroom selfie in a bikini for the #jlochallenge.”

Lopez eventually caught wind of the challenge and applauded all the women who have proudly taken part in it. “Keep growing, keep pushing,” the mother-of-two wrote on her Instagram Story.

Take a look at some of the beautiful women who’ve shared their stories in honor of the #JLOChallenge, below:

The viral #JLoChallenge is a glorious reminder that beauty, health, and confidence are not exclusive to celebrities.

Emilia Clarke No Longer Takes Selfies With Fans Following This Traumatic Event

Emilia Clarke said she won’t be taking selfies with fans anymore after a traumatic experience made her reconsider how she wants to interact with people when they see her in public.

In a recent interview on the Table Manners podcast, the Game of Thrones star discussed a particular stressful incident when a fan approached her for a photo at an airport.

“I was genuinely walking through an airport and I suddenly started having what I can only believe to be a panic attack brought on by complete exhaustion,” she recalled per Time.

The actor continued, “I was on my own, I was on the phone to my mum saying, ‘I feel like I can’t breathe, I don’t know what’s going on.’ ‘I’m there and the tears are coming out. I’m crying and crying, this guy’s like, ‘Can I get a selfie?’ And I was like, ‘I can’t breathe, I’m really sorry. Just having a minute.’ It was after a few moments like that where I was like, ‘I don’t know how to do this.’”

Clarke said the encounter made her realize she wants to engage in more meaningful and “human-to-human” interactions with her fans in the future. But she said she’s still happy to sign autographs if they want to remember the moment.

“When you do that, you have to have an interaction with that person, as opposed to someone just going, ‘Oi, give us a selfie, goodbye.’,” she said. “Then you have a chat and you’re actually having a truthful human-to-human thing, as opposed to it being this other thing that probably isn’t nice for them and isn’t nice to you.”

The 33-year-old acknowledged that although she signed up for fame, she’s “been trying to navigate how I can [interact with fans] without feeling like my soul is completely empty. Because they don’t really want to talk to you.”

“When you do a signing thing, you can actually look into their eyes and have a proper real human thing,” she added.

Just like that, Clarke found a way to put an end to fleeting selfies and contribute to her own mental well-being.

Emily Blunt Has a Very Sweet Reason for Refusing to Take Selfies With Fans

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are one of the most recognizable couples in Hollywood. Blunt has starred in several box-office hits—Girl on the Train, The Devil Wears Prada, Into the Woods, to name a few—so it’s easy to see why fans might feel comfortable approaching her in public. Krasinski, on the other hand, played Friendly Regular Guy Jim Halpert for several seasons on The Office. Obviously, people feel connected to him.

That being said, Blunt and Krasinski are still entitled to their privacy—as we all are—and shouldn’t feel obligated to take photos or chat with fans. Several celebrities have opened up about why they refuse to take selfies with people in public, and Blunt just added her voice to the chorus. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Blunt says she’s not into snapping for photos with fans—not anymore, at least. And it’s not because she doesn’t want to meet the people who watch her films: She just wants a more genuine exchange.

“Social media has changed the landscape, so an encounter with you is valued more as a social-media currency than a genuine interaction,” Blunt told the magazine. “Frances McDormand told us—she just makes my teeth ache I love her so much—when someone asks her for a picture, she says, ‘You know what? I’ve actually retired from that. But I would like to shake your hand and meet you.’”

Honestly, having a five-second chat with Blunt about how The Devil Wears Prada helped me come out sounds way more appealing than taking a blurry pic that will inevitably get buried in Instagram. In fact, it’s those types of chats—the real ones—that make Blunt realize the importance of her career.

“I am always under the impression that I have a silly job for a living,” she also told VF. “But occasionally you will run into someone who deepens your feeling about it. Sometimes people will say they had cancer and The Office was the only thing that made their family laugh during that time. You realize when you are in something that really touches people that it does offer an escape.”

Kim Kardashian Says Selfies Are Over, So I Guess the Internet's Canceled

Let me take you back to a simpler time: 2015. A time when we didn’t have the threat of nuclear war with North Korea, Fuller House didn’t exist, and Kim Kardashian was all about selfies. That last one is particularly important. Kim loved selfies back then—well, she loved them before that, too. This is a woman who, when faced with the prospect of her sister going to jail, took photos of herself. A woman who announced to the world she’s voting for Hillary Clinton via selfie. A woman who didn’t let an elephant’s rogue trunk get in the way of the perfect photo. She quite literally published a 448-page book about selfies. I’m not kidding. 448 pages. Of just selfies. Called Selfish.

And now that same woman is denouncing the art form she commodified. Yes, my friends, Kim Kardashian just announced that selfies are o-v-e-r. If that’s not a sign the world is up in flames, I don’t know what is. We now live in an era where, if Khloé goes to jail, Kim would be a supportive sister. What fresh hell is this?

Kim dropped this bombshell while playing a game of “Would You Rather?” with, ironically, Khloé. When Khloé asked Kim to choose between never posting a selfie again or never Snapchatting again, she (blasphemously) picked the former.

“I would rather never be able to post a selfie again. Take a selfie,” Kim, who once went out of her way to vogue behind a stranger’s selfie, said. “I kinda feel like selfies are kind of a few years ago.”

A few years ago? Then what is now, Kim? How are we supposed to express our love for Fit Tea, large salads, and Balmain’s siiiiiick new collection in 2017?

Kim’s Instagram profile has the answer. True to her sacrilegious words, she hasn’t posted a selfie in a while. Her immediate feed is just a bunch of well-staged photos taken by other people. So is that what’s now? Asking someone to take our Instagram photos? Hiring a Jonathan Cheban clone to follow us around everywhere (the grocery store, the club, Kylie’s Lip Kit factory), feverishly take photos of us, and then picking the best ones? I now have to bring other people into my Valencia-tinted orbit? Actually, wait, I’m sure the Valencia Instagram filter is “kind of a few years ago,” too.

It’s official, people: The Internet is canceled. This GIF is a lie.

I call this my morning coffee at home look ☕️ #NoMakeupMonday if you don’t count the leftover mascara under my right eye… ??.” Not technically, truly “no-makeup” but we’re here for it regardless.
