The Journalists Who Broke the Harvey Weinstein Story Just Won the Pulitzer Prize

On Monday afternoon at New York’s Columbia University, The New York Times and The New Yorker were awarded a shared Pulitzer Prize in Public Service for their journalistic work on stories that ended up prompting the public’s focus on what we’ve come to know as the #MeToo movement. It’s not often that you can pinpoint the beginning of such a momentous cultural shift, but in this case you can draw a pretty clear line to the stories by Meghan Twohey and Jodi Kantor at the Times and Ronan Farrow at The New Yorker, which made public the initial allegations of abuse and harassment by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. (Of course, the original #MeToo hashtag was created by Tarana Burke, but it gained even more traction in the weeks and months after the Weinstein stories broke.)

In response to the award, Farrow wrote on Twitter, “Grateful for every brave source, for Jodi and Megan, and for a tireless @NewYorker team that stood by this story when others tried to bury it. This moment gets called a reckoning, but we just started telling the truth about old abuses of power. Thanks to all who keep doing so.”

Asia Argento, one of the women who first spoke to Farrow, congratulated him on the win and thanked him for telling women’s stories.

Mira Sorvino, another of Farrow’s sources, tweeted: “The hugest congratulations to @jodikantor @mega2e & an especially warm hug to my friend and fearless truth teller @RonanFarrow you all created a wave of change that I am so grateful to be part of! With your conscientious journalism you literally changed the world! #MeToo”

In the wake of the Weinstein allegations, women began sharing their own stories of sexual harassment online. Soon many more powerful men—from Matt Lauer and James Franco to Al Franken and Charlie Rose in Hollywood, media, business, and politics were facing accusations of their own. A true reckoning had begun and frankly shows no signs of disappearing any time soon. A number of powerful women in Hollywood launched Time’s Up, which includes a legal defense fund for women of any industry who would otherwise not be able to afford counsel to fight workplace harassment.

It’s pretty hard to imagine that any of those events happen in such quick succession without the work of Kantor, Twohey, and Farrow—and the brave women who went public with their stories. Needless to say, a Pulitzer Prize seems an incredibly appropriate thank-you.

Meryl Streep Just Broke Her Own Oscars Record for the Most Acting Nominations

Typical Streep! Grande Dame of film acting Meryl Streep was just nominated for Best Actress for her role as Katharine Graham in Steven Spielberg’s The Post, a historical drama about The Washington Post battle against the Nixon administration to publish the Pentagon Papers. This is Streep’s 21st acting nomination, breaking her own record for most nominated actor ever. She’s well ahead of the game, since Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn are tied for second place, with a measly 12 nominations apiece. While Streep is the most nominated actress in history, she isn’t actually the biggest winner; while she and a handful of others have three statuettes at home, Katharine Hepburn is the only person ever to take four for acting.

“I am honored beyond measure by this nomination for a film I love, a film that stands in defense of press freedom, and inclusion of women’s voices in the movement of history,” Streep said in a statement, per the Huffington Post following Tuesday’s nominations announcement. “Proud of the film, and all her filmmakers. Thank you from a full heart.”

The Post was also nominated for Best Picture, but the buzzy and timely drama failed to crack other categories. Still, there’s no denying that Streep is really good in it. Streep faces stiff competition for Best Actress, though. She’s up against Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya), and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird). McDormand is the clear favorite to win after this past weekend’s SAG Awards win.

But, undoubtedly, this latest nomination only further cements Streep as the greatest film actress of her time. She only very rarely makes a bad movie, and it’s never bad because of her. She can next be seen on the big screen in two highly anticipated musical sequels: Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! and Mary Poppins Returns. Viva La Streep!

Katie Couric Just Broke Her Silence About Matt Lauer

Last week, former Today show host Matt Lauer was fired from NBC due to allegations of sexual misconduct. The reports added him to a long list of powerful men who have recently been accused of sexual harassment. And although some women who have previously worked with the anchor have spoken out against him, Katie Couric—who co-hosted the Today show with Lauer for 15 years—has remained noticeably silent. Until now, that is.

On Friday she posted a photo on Instagram of herself and her daughter Carrie. An angry commenter attacked Couric for not speaking up about Lauer, saying,“I want time back I spent watching!!!!! and you have nothing to say. Crickets. People hear you loud and clear though.”

Shortly after, Couric replied to the comment: “It’s incredibly upsetting and I will say something when I’m ready to. Thanks for your interest.”

Couric should, of course, speak up if and when she feels ready to—that’s her own, personal choice to make, not a commenter’s.

Accusations against Lauer include claims that he used a button under his desk to lock his office door to avoid being caught harassing women and an accusation that he gave a sex toy to a coworker with a description of how he would use it with her. These reports add to a list of problematic behavior with women both on and off the air. Lauer has apologized for his actions, admitting that there is some truth to the allegations.

Couric referenced Lauer’s inappropriate sexual conduct on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live back in 2012.

“You cohosted the Today show with Matt Lauer for 15 years,” Cohen began. “What is Matt’s most annoying habit?”

“Hmmm…” Couric said. “He pinches me on the ass a lot.”

Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky Reportedly Broke Up Last Month

Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky are a couple no more. Multiple outlets confirmed Wednesday morning that the duo have reportedly broken up after a little more than a year of dating.

According to Entertainment Tonight, sources said the pair actually broke up last month, but that it was an amicable split and Lawrence and Aronofsky are still friendly. Case in point: Another source told ET that the former couple attended the Governors Awards in Los Angeles earlier this month, post-breakup, but still sat together. “It’s not awkward,” the source said.

J.Law and the Black Swan director met on the set of the psychological thriller Mother! and reportedly started dating in September 2016, after the movie had wrapped. Although they were spotted grabbing dinner together multiple times and were even photographed making out on the sidewalk in New York City, they kept their lips zipped about the relationship for months.

Lawrence finally confirmed their romance in the September 2017 issue of Vogue. “We had energy,” she said of how they started dating. “I had energy for him. I don’t know how he felt about me.” She continued, “I’ve been in relationships before where I am just confused. And I’m never confused with him.” The Oscar winner also praised Darren’s low-key vibe and aversion to the spotlight. “I normally don’t like Harvard people, because they can’t go two minutes without mentioning that they went to Harvard,” she said. “He’s not like that.”

Aronofsky also praised Jen’s talent in the Vogue story. “It’s such a raw, natural talent she has,” he said. “I always kind of compare her to Michael Jordan.”

Although it’s unclear why Lawrence, 27, and Aronofsky, 48, broke up, that same Vogue interview revealed something of a disconnect between the pair on an incredibly important topic: the Kardashians. Lawrence, of course, is a noted KUWTK superfan and has even hung out with reality TV’s royal family several (hilarious) times, while Aronofsky seems to be less of a Kim K stan than his ex. For example, of the “Kardashian tent” that the Mother! crew constructed on the movie set as a place for J.Law to go and calm down between takes of the intense film, Aronofsky said, “I wasn’t involved in that. I was like, ‘What are you talking about, the Kardashians?'” Lawrence added, “He just finds it so vastly disappointing.”

Not saying that her reality-TV obsession is why Lawrence and Aronofsky split up, but honestly, it wouldn’t be the worst reason to end a relationship.

Cole Sprouse Just Broke His Silence on Those Lili Reinhart Dating Rumors

The second season of Riverdale premieres in just a few weeks, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Specifically, there are three things they need to know ASAP: 1) Who killed Archie’s father? 2) What is going on with Cheryl’s mother? and 3) For the love of God, are Cole Sprouse (Jughead) and Lili Reinhart (Betty) dating?

Rumors that Sprouse and Reinhart are in a relationship started circulating over the summer, but nothing’s been confirmed yet. There have been hints, though: Reinhart’s Instagram post about Sprouse for his birthday was very lovey-dovey, and, oh yeah, they secretly held hands during a Comic-Con interview. The signs are totally there, but neither of them have said anything, officially, about it.

Well, until now. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sprouse broke his silence on whether or not he and Reinhart are an item off-screen, too. (Their characters are in a relationship on the show.)

“Since the show began, people have wanted Lili and I to be together. People have wanted Lili and Camila to be together. People have wanted KJ and I to be together. People have wanted every actor on this show to be in a union that they could make real,” he said, according to Just Jared. “But truthfully, it’s very pleasing that people talk about Lili and I in that way because it means that we’re resonating so strongly that people really want that to be true.”

These quotes are vague, but Sprouse isn’t denying anything. If the rumors were complete rubbish, you’d think he would just set the record straight, but instead he’s adding fuel to the fire.

Granted, Sprouse and Reinhart don’t have to talk about their relationship at all; their personal lives, truthfully, are none of our business. However, if they never confirm their relationship, we have one request for the Riverdale writers: Let Bughead live, please. We need something!

Ian Somerhalder Broke His Post-Baby 'Month of Silence' to Gush About Nikki Reed

Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed joined the parents club on July 25 when they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder. Fans hoping to see pics of their new baby ASAP were disappointed when Reed told Fit Pregnancy and Baby she and Somerhalder were taking a one-month break from communication after she gave birth. This meant no visitors, no smart phones, and no social media—which was shocking news because they’re two of the most transparent celebrities on the Internet. Reed and Somerhalder literally announced they were expecting on Instagram, so the concept of them not sharing anything on social media for one month was surprising.

And I guess Somerhalder thought so too, because he just broke his 30-day silence pact. Don’t worry, though: It’s for a very good reason. The Vampire Diaries alum took to Instagram Monday night (August 21)—four days shy of one full month—to gush about Reed.

“Just a quick note to you my beautiful wife,” he wrote under a photo of Reed’s Fit Pregnancy and Baby cover. “You are briefly napping on the other side of the room after being an amazing mom all night so you’ll read this when you wake… seeing these images reminds me of those amazing 9 months that you sacrificed your whole being to grow our little one. The kindness, the beauty and organic nature of these photos makes me so very proud. You brought such fun and such power into our lives being pregnant but you literally brought the word sexy into pregnancy, we all see it. Thank you for being my partner in this life and thank you for inspiring not just me but all others who read, hear or see what your soul gives us.”

See the very touching post for yourself, below:

Reed told Fit Pregnancy and Baby she and Somerhalder wanted unplug after welcoming their child to make sure they’re “fully present” for those first 30 days. “We’ll take the baby’s first month for ourselves,” Reed said, according to People. “After the baby arrives, we’re doing one month of silence. Just the three of us, no visitors, and we’re turning off our phones too, so there’s no expectation for us to communicate. Otherwise, every five minutes it would be, ‘How are you feeling? Can we have a picture?’ You don’t get those first 30 days back.”

Twenty-six days is basically the same as 30, right?
