My Boyfriend Broke Up With Me—So I Bought Myself A Diamond Ring

My boyfriend and I were nowhere close to getting engaged when we ended things a month ago. It was a smooth parting of ways—two adults looking into each other’s eyes under the Brooklyn night sky, telling each other we liked each other a lot knew we weren’t ultimately compatible. It had been a little over four months and at 33, it was one of my longest relationships.

I don’t feel societal pressure to get married anytime soon. Maybe it’s because I live in New York City. Maybe it’s because I’m still figuring out what I want my life to look like. Maybe it’s because I spent most of my twenties focused on my career. But by the time I arrived on the dating scene, I still had an old idea left over from youth: I’ll be happy when I’m in a relationship. How baffled I was to discover that upon entering one, this was not the case at all. People always say relationships are “work” but what that actually meant, I had no idea. I learned that for me, it means working through a lifetime of insecurities that rear their ugly heads as soon as I meet someone.

In my last relationship, I worked overtime. When he took a while to respond to my text, I let go of the fear that he didn’t like me and leaned into the fact that I knew he did. When he was busy, I didn’t take it personally, I made my own plans. When I felt an existential sadness, I reminded myself that I sometimes felt this way before him too. I slowly learned how to trust myself and trust the relationship and remained positive even though my fear of it ending eventually came true.

Even though our breakup was mutual, I still felt an emptiness. I thought of my friend whose boyfriend recently bought her a gorgeous ring. I was jealous. Happy for her, sure but it’s perfectly possible to feel happiness and envy at the same time. I wanted someone to love me so much that they would buy me something beautiful that I didn’t think I deserved.

I’ve often looked at other women’s hands and the glittering rocks delicately perched on their left ring finger—a status symbol, a constant reminder to them and to the world that they are loved. And isn’t that what a ring is? A symbol of commitment, mutual desire, and a decision to wake up next to one another for the rest of their lives. This is the love I’ve longed for. That I’ve waited to be deemed worthy of.

It had never occurred to me that I could just buy one for myself—that a ring from me to me could be just as meaningful as one from a man—until a saw the most gorgeous vintage diamond ring while browsing TheRealReal after a post-breakup crying session on my couch.

I am not what you would call an impulse shopper. My childhood home was riddled with financial insecurity and I inherited my mother’s frugality. I don’t own any diamonds and the only thing I splurge on is health insurance and my ever-increasing Brooklyn rent. When I saw the 18k gold ring with four diamonds and five emeralds, my mind immediately flashed to what my friends or family would say: How could you afford that? Wow, that was an extreme reaction to a breakup…

After giving it some thought, I realized I cared too much about what others thought of my purchasing decisions—decisions made with money that I made solo, no significant other required. Despite (and also thanks to) my frugal tendencies, I actually could afford it. One click, and the ring—my symbol from me to me that I am loved—was mine.

I don’t think a ring will fill the void my boyfriend left but it will represent to me what I decided when I added it to my cart: I will no longer abandon myself to a relationship or expect a romantic partner to give me a happiness that only I can truly give myself.

Rihanna Just Gave a Rare Look Into Her Relationship With Boyfriend Hassan Jameel

Rihanna gives the world so much: her music, her inclusive Fenty Beauty products, her new game-changing fashion line, and those iconic photos of her walking around with wine glasses. But one thing she doesn’t discuss much is her private life, especially her relationship with her billionaire boyfriend Hassan Jameel—which, fair!

She made an exception, though, for her friend and Ocean’s 8 co-star Sarah Paulson in a new story for Interview magazine. In the piece, Rihanna reveals that she’s started carving out more personal time for herself—literally, her calendar is marked with a “P” on those days—and it’s in part thanks to her relationship.

XPOS/Backgrid

“I never used to be this way. It’s only the last couple years that I started to realize that you need to make time for yourself, because your mental health depends on it,” she says. “If you’re not happy, you’re not going to be happy even doing things that you love doing. It’d feel like a chore. I never want work to feel like a chore.”

She continues, “My career is my purpose, and it should never feel like anything other than a happy place. I’ve made little things a big deal, like going for a walk or going to the grocery store. I got into a new relationship, and it matters to me. It was like, ‘I need to make time for this.’”

At one point in the interview the singer gives Paulson free rein to ask her anything she wants, which leads to this short, but revealing, exchange about Jameel.

Rihanna and Her Billionaire Boyfriend Just Went on a Rare Public Date

Rihanna continued her birthday week festivities Thursday night (February 21) by going on a rare, public date with her rumored boyfriend, Saudi businessman Hassan Jameel. The two were photographed laughing and having a great time at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, both opting for casual ensembles. RiRi wore a Lakers jersey, while Jameel kept it comfortable with a black baseball cap and zip-up sweater. Neither of them stopped smiling throughout the entire evening.

Check out a few photos from their date, below.

They found love at a Lakers game (which I could never do—I hate sports).

But I’d probably enjoy a basketball game if Rihanna was with me. Hell, I’d enjoy a root canal if Rihanna was with me.

News of Rihanna and Jameel’s relationship first broke in June 2017, when they were spotted kissing while on vacation in Spain. They’ve made a few rare appearances since then. There was the time Rihanna literally hid Jameel under her umbrella (ella). They reportedly broke up in June 2018, but things seemed back on by December, when they were spotted having a cozy dinner in Malibu.

Rihanna will no-doubt continue her birthday festivities this weekend. She kicked things off Wednesday night (her actual birthday) by attending a party thrown for her at Wally’s restaurant in Beverly Hills.

And she certainly has a lot to celebrate. For one, her Fenty Beauty line is killing it. In January, she revealed the brand was dropping an inclusive line of concealers in 50 shades.

“I never could have anticipated the emotional connection that women are having with the products and the brand as a whole,” Rihanna told Time magazine about Fenty Beauty back in November 2017. “Some are finding their shade of foundation for the first time, getting emotional at the counter. That’s something I will never get over.” She added, “I’m going to continue to have fun and push the boundaries in this industry.”

Your Internet Boyfriend Is Obviously One of These 14 Guys

Your first crush is a rite of passage. The fixations that follow it are just life. Nervous, awkward, sublime. Disastrous. Transcendent. Here, we celebrate infatuations, obsessions, and passions in all their exquisite splendor. Meet our It’s Just a Little Crush series. Isn’t she divine?

Internet Boyfriend (n): A famous or semifamous male person whom your entire Twitter feed has a crush on at the same time. Often a newcomer who at least seems like a feminist. Arrived on the scene with a breakthrough project that made the world go, “?.” Can be in a relationship, despite Internet Boyfriend status. Can’t be married.

How to use it in a sentence: Noah Centineo is this week’s Internet Boyfriend, but I heard the star of that new Netflix rom-com has serious IB potential.

The advent of the Internet Boyfriend (circa 2008) has been explored at length elsewhere, and in truth there is no one definitive account. But what makes an Internet Boyfriend? That’s easier to assess. Because while Internet Boyfriends come in a wealth of looks, aesthetics, and levels of fame, true specimens do share several essential common traits. Of course, an Internet Boyfriend is lovable and charismatic, but so are tons of dudes.

The Internet Boyfriend takes it one step further: If he met your parents, he’d offer up a crumb crake that he’d baked himself—no questions asked. He doesn’t have some weird complex about splitting the check and will happily talk You fan theories with your friends. He’d never leave you on “read.”

At present, Noah Centineo is the Internet’s current BF. His performance in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before made an entire generation of jaded Netflix users believe in romance. But 2018’s Internet Boyfriend can’t hold the top spot forever. With 2019 comes a new slate of men who look like they’d really love to meet your mom and saw this Maya Angelou quote on Instagram that reminded them of you.

Here we spotlight 13 of them.

Jennifer Lawrence Is Engaged to Boyfriend Cooke Maroney

Jennifer Lawrence is engaged to boyfriend Cooke Maroney, a rep for the actress confirms to People magazine.

Not much is known at this time about the couple’s engagement. According to Page Six , Lawrence was spotted wearing a “massive ring” while at dinner recently with Maroney in New York City. “It was a giant rock,” a source tells Page Six. “They seemed like they were celebrating and people were talking about it. The ring was very noticeable. They were sitting back in a corner. She was wearing a cute black dress with white polka dots.”

Lawrence and Maroney started dating in June 2018 and have been spotted on several dates in New York City, Paris, and Rome. The actress hasn’t said much publicly about the relationship, but she’s never been one to divulge too much about her personal life. Before Maroney, Lawrence briefly dated her mother! director Darren Aronofsky, and from 2011 to 2014 she was in a relationship with actor Nicholas Hoult. In a rare move, she opened up to Diane Sawyer about breaking up with Hoult, contextualizing it with the end of the Hunger Games films.

“These movies had been my life for so long and they had to come first in everything,” she said. “I was also in a relationship with somebody for five years and that was my life. So my life was this person and these movies and we broke up around the same time that I wrapped those movies. Being 24 was this whole year of ‘Who am I without these movies? Who am I without this man?’”

In February 2018, Jennifer Lawrence said she was taking a year off from acting to focus on activism. “I’m going to take the next year off,” she said, according to EW. “I’m going to be working with this organization as a part of Represent.Us … trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level.”

Congrats to Lawrence and Maroney!

Taylor Hill and Boyfriend Michael Stephen Shank Star in the Ralph Lauren Romance Campaign

On any given day, you can typically find Taylor Hill in front of the camera, on a runway, or hanging at home with her boyfriend, Michael Stephen Shank, and their mini labradoodle, Tate. The Colorado native loves some good R&R—a good bath, some TV in bed. But for Hill, work is her priority: the 22-year-old model has walked countless fashion shows and is a face for Lancôme. And now, she has a new gig under her belt, as the newest face of Ralph Lauren Romance. She’s starring in the fragrance’s latest campaign, which launches today. And to ensure the romance in the campaign feels legit, she brought her longtime beau, Shank, along for the ride.

We sat down with Hill, with Shank and adorable Tate in tow, to ask them all of our Big Beauty Questions, below.

Glamour: What made you team up with Ralph Lauren?

They called me, they said they wanted to work with us and I said, “Heck yes!” For me, it just made so much sense because I’m from Colorado and I feel like a lot of essence and spirit of the brand is that western cowboy theme. It’s a huge deal where I’m from. Growing up, I always knew what Ralph Lauren was and when I came to New York and started modeling, I walked into a Ralph Lauren store for the first time and was like, “Wow, this looks like home. I don’t feel so homesick!” I’ve been walking for the brand since I was 17 and I’ve done almost every show since then.

Hill and Shank together in the Ralph Lauren Romance campaign

Glamour: What was it like shooting the campaign with your boyfriend?

Taylor Hill: I had the best time. We were just doing our thing, on set just talking. We’re best friends first, and in a relationship, so for us it was like we just got to hang out. It was work for sure, but it was fun working together.

Michael Stephen Shank: I don’t want to say that it was too easy, but it really was too easy.

Glamour: What’s your favorite scent-related memory?

TH: The smell of baking, since my mom baked a lot when we were kids. She makes pies and cookies and all of that stuff—when I smell that, it’s like I’m back home and my mom’s baking cookies and it’s Christmas Eve or a birthday.

Glamour: What does your home smell like?

TH: My mom is obsessed with candles—she has a whole collection and special candles that she won’t light because they’re shaped like pinecones and things like that. We have a fireplace in the center of our house that’s always going in the winter. Home just smells cozy and warm. My favorite candle is Diptyque Baies ($65).

Glamour: Do you wear fragrance when you walk the runway?

TH: I’m always running around like crazy so I forget to, but I should, because then it’ll mark the scent of a memory. I’m a firm believer in that. I never had a signature scent, so now I’ll use Romance as that.

Glamour: Have you learned any amazing beauty tricks backstage?

TH: A really good one from makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi: She uses a hair dryer to heat up the eyelash curler. She dabs it on her hand to make sure it’s not too hot and then curls your lashes with it. Your lashes go ‘woop’ and stick straight up and last the whole day. Genius.

Glamour: What’s your skincare routine like?

TH: I wash my face every night to take off my makeup. I use the Lancôme Creme Radiance Cleanser ($27). I also swear by Bi Facil makeup remover ($30), it’s the best. If I shower in the morning, I’ll wash my face again—just a super light wash. Then, I’ll do the Génifique Advanced Serum ($105) and the Absolue Precious Cells lip balm ($50) . At night, I use the Hydra Zen night mask ($48). It’s an overnight mask that you pat on and let soak in overnight then rinse off in the morning.

Glamour: Your go-to makeup product?

TH: Lancôme Monsieur Big mascara ($25). Seriously, I’m not just saying because I work with them, I only use that. I stress out if I can’t find it. I’ll give it to makeup artists and be like, “please use this.”

Glamour: Are there any self-care rituals that you swear by?

TH: I love to work out, so doing rest days and massage is really good for muscle recovery. I love massage, I’m a firm believer in deep tissue—it needs to hurt a little bit. I like to take epsom salt baths, which I do a lot in the winter. I get really cold, so during New York winters I’ll take baths at least three times a week.

Glamour: Do you and Michael ever steal beauty products from each other?

TH: He uses Génifique, the serum. And my sunscreen.

MSS: True. I’m doused in that Lancôme stuff. She also uses my Thinksport ($7) deodorant, and then it disappears. It works well, so I’ll get it and she’ll steal it, and then I’ll never see it again. It’s a good one.

Glamour: What’s the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of beauty?

TH: I bleached my eyebrows for the Alexander McQueen show because Pat McGrath was doing the makeup. I was 18 and it was my first major London fashion week. My eyebrows are my thing! They’re my look, they’re my staple. I was crying, saying I couldn’t do it. And then Pat looks at me and she’s like, ‘Darling, it’s McQueen!” So I did it.

Glamour: Who’s your beauty icon?

TH: I have many. One of my favorite models is Gisele Bündchen. She’s such a beautiful human being from the inside out. I’m her number one fan. I’ve always loved Brooke Shields, she made me appreciate my eyebrows. And Cindy Crawford. Are you kidding? I love Cindy Crawford. Now we’re kind of friends and I’m so happy about it, and I’m friends with Kaia—I hang out with her backstage at shows and I’m totally chill and normal. But I tell her all the time that I’m a superfan of her mom.

Glamour: What’s your beauty mantra?

TH: “Less is more.” And “Enhance, don’t hide.”
