The Hidden Message Behind Arya and Jon's Hairstyles on Game of Thrones Last Night


This post contains spoilers for the final season of Game of Thrones. Consider yourself warned.

From the very first episode of Game of Thrones, Arya Stark and Jon Snow have shared a special bond. Granted, we now know they aren’t actually half-siblings, but that doesn’t lessen the relationship between the two. Back then, it was Jon who recognized and nurtured Arya’s skills as a fighter, even gifting her with her first sword, Needle, before he left to join the Night’s Watch.

When Arya and Jon finally reunited in season eight, it was emotional. In last night’s penultimate episode, fans noticed the two seemed more in sync than ever—and that they both resembled Ned Stark, the man who raised them. From their hairstyles to their battle armor, they’ve never so explicitly Team Stark. Does this hint that together (perhaps with Sansa, as well), they will unite to take down Daenerys?

The half-up/half-down hairstyle was a Ned signature—and now Arya and Jon are both wearing theirs in a similar fashion.

They were also dressed similarly, to the point that some viewers found it confusing. “They really made Arya look like Jon in episode 5; same hair, clothes, shots from behind are made to look like either,” one user wrote on Twitter. “The two Northerners who care for the innocent.”

“The only people that did their jobs this season are the costume designers. Did anyone else notice that Arya and Jon have had the same clothes/hair style this season?” wrote another.

So what could this mean? Well, a few things. At face value, it’s absolutely an homage to Ned Stark, an honorable man who means the world to both Jon and Arya. It’s also a physical symbol that these two are cut from the same cloth. But the implications are deeper, as well. Jon and Arya looking similar could mean they’re destined for the same fate as Ned. “You know what would be pretty killer? If we continue with the
‘cyclical’ theme of #GameofThrones, and the final scene is the beheading of Jon Snow by a mad tyrant with Sansa and Arya being witness to it (à la Ned Stark in S1),” one fan posited—which would be devastating but actually does make sense.

We won’t know anything for sure until the Game of Thrones series finale this Sunday, but one thing is certain: Nothing is coincidence on this show. Jon and Arya’s likeminded aesthetics this season are 100 percent intentional. If their fate at the end is the same, let’s just hope it’s a positive one.

Some Guys Seriously Think Arya Doesn’t ‘Deserve’ Her Big *Game of Thrones* Moment


Warning: Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.

Last night’s Game of Thrones was intense, to put it lightly. After seasons of buildup, we finally got to see the Battle of Winterfell, which ended in a surprising-but-satisfying way: Arya killed the Night King by stabbing him with a dagger made of Valyrian steel. This turn of events set Twitter ablaze, with everyone cheering—both physically and metaphorically—for Maisie Williams’ beloved character.

Well, not everyone. For whatever reason, some guys out there think Arya didn’t “deserve” this victorious moment. In fact, they’re calling her a “Mary Sue,” which is a literary term used to describe an idealized female character who’s seen a “perfect” and has success handed to them. The derision for Arya has gotten so out of control that “Mary Sue” is now trending on Twitter.

But of course droves of people are jumping to her defense. “People calling Arya a Mary Sue may have missed the part where she trained for six seasons to be an assassin,” one person tweeted. “She’s been training as an assassin for 8 FREAKING SEASONS, and this was the payoff,” posted someone else.

“Wait wait wait. Some folks are calling Arya a ‘Mary Sue’ when she spent the entire series—seven whole seasons—training to be a master assassin? It takes 3-4 years to become a deployable Navy SEAL, but Arya is a Mary Sue?” wrote another person.

A popular female-centric comic site that’s literally called The Mary Sue even hopped in Arya’s corner. “Glad to see that we are trending on Twitter,” the site tweeted in a statement. “We here at The Mary Sue are so happy you’re reading us and that this has nothing to do with men diminishing the importance of a female character who trained for something through over 7 seasons of a television show.”

We couldn’t have said it any better ourselves. Arya Stark didn’t defeat the Night King because she got lucky—she did it because she’s the best assassin on Game of Thrones. And there are eight seasons of receipts to prove it.

All the Details About Arya Stark's Mysterious New Weapon on *Game of Thrones*


Warning: This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season eight.

The return of Game of Thrones brought joy to millions last night. And while it was great to see Arya Stark back together with what’s left of her family, an even more intriguing plot line emerged around a mysterious new weapon she commissioned.

Here’s what happened in the episode: Arya goes to visit Gendry, where they engage in some mildly flirtatious banter, and then she asks him if he can forge her the weapon she desires.”Here’s my wish,” she says while handing Gendry a sketch. “Can you make it?” Gendry is confused as to why she needs this new tool, considering she already has her sword and a recently-acquired dagger made of Valyrian steel.

From the looks of the drawing, the weapon seems to come in two parts—both with pointy ends. Vanity Fair‘s Joanna Robinson points out that this new design was perhaps what GoT weapons master Tommy Dunne was referring to on their “Still Watching” podcast. “There is one creation in season eight that is absolutely phenomenal,” he said. “It’ll be a showstopper. That was great to finish. It was great to make, [so] great to design it that it was about to be reverse-engineered and made into two different items.”

Robinson also notes that we may have seen Arya using this spear-like creation in the trailer for season eight. The sketch shows there is dragonglass on the weapon, one of the things that can actually kill a White Walker—so it will possibly come in handy as the Night King’s troops are fast approaching. Some surmise the other end might actually be Valyrian steel.

Fans on social media were excited by this development.

Will this new commission be the turning point in the battle against the dead? Possibly the thing that actually takes out the Night King himself? We shall see.

Emilia Clarke Just Revealed What Happens When Dany Meets Arya and Sansa on Game of Thrones


Surely one of the most nerve-wracking scenes on Game of Thrones season eight will be when Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) meets Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) for the first time. Don’t forget the Mother of Dragons already has a lot stacked against her: Her family has done some pretty terrible things to the North (a.k.a Stark territory), including burning Sansa’s Uncle Brandon alive and kidnapping Jon’s mother, Lyanna. Sure, Jon and Dany may be a couple now, but I have a hard time believing that’s going to make Sansa and Arya turn a blind eye to these crimes.

Clarke confirmed as much in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. She says Dany’s first interaction with Arya and Sansa seems fine at first, but it soon becomes clear they’re not all going to become best friends.

“I like to think that it’s like Meet the Parents,” Emilia Clarke tells EW. “It’s like: ‘I hope they like me. [Jon Snow’s] wicked. It’s a real good thing we got going on. He’s the final piece. We’re destined for greatness and world domination is a breath away.’ And so I need to be like: ‘Can I braid your hair, Sansa? Little Arya, come over here, let’s play some cricket.’ So there’s that. And then, very, very quickly, it’s like: ‘Wait, is it just me, or do they hate me?’”

Oof. This does not sound pleasant at all. But those who keep up with Game of Thrones theories shouldn’t be too surprised. It’s long been speculated that Sansa and Dany are going to outright hate each other this season. Sansa’s loyalty to her family—as evidenced by the scaly outfit she wears in the photo, below—all but confirms Dany is on her shit list. And maybe even Arya’s hit list.

This icy meet-and-greet happens during episode one of the new season—which premieres this Sunday on HBO—so you won’t have to wait long before finding out what happens.

This *Game of Thrones* Theory Suggests Arya Didn't Actually Kill Littlefinger


One of the most talked-about moments from Game of Thrones season seven was when Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) murdered Petyr Baelish, a.k.a Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen), in front of literally everyone. It was a long time coming for fans, who had been waiting to see Littlefinger pay for all the scheming he’s done in Winterfell. I mean, right before Arya slit his throat, Sansa casually reminded him that he betrayed both her and her mother. He was a bad apple, simply put, and fans weren’t sad to see him go.

But what if Littlefinger isn’t actually dead? That’s what a YouTuber who goes by Neo suggests in this recently-unearthed fan theory. Neo posits Littlefinger paid one of the Faceless Men of Braavos to die in his place so he could GTFO. Of course, Game of Thrones fans know the Faceless Men have the shape-shifting abilities to easily pull this off—and Neo has evidence to back his theory.

Think back to the fifth episode of season seven, for instance, when Littlefinger is talking in hushed tones to an unfamiliar woman. Neo believes this woman told Littlefinger his “time is up,” effectively tipping him off that Winterfell wanted him dead. We then see Littlefinger drop a coin in her hand—the same coin, Neo suggests, that Arya used to pay a Braavos in an earlier season. Ultimately, Neo concludes this woman was a Faceless Man sent to kill Arya—but Littlefinger intervened with the coin and instructed said Faceless Man to die in his place. Make sense? For what it’s worth, many fans seem to think Littlefinger is alive too:

Obviously, Neo’s theory has its problems. For one, we’ve never seen a Faceless Man use their abilities to die in someone’s place. Also, bringing back such an abhorrent character might anger the fandom. Game of Thrones has pulled more shocking stunts, though. At the very least, this is interesting fodder to keep us occupied until the show returns April 14 on HBO.

Maisie Williams Finally Set the Record Straight on How to Pronounce Arya Stark's Name


Forget final-season spoilers, because a long-gestating Game of Thrones mystery has been solved. However, it’s less to do with spooky White Walkers and more along the lines of…basic pronunciation.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Maisie Williams clarified once and for all the correct pronunciation of her character Arya Stark’s name. Take a deep breath. You ready?! Have you been disrespecting the Girl With No Name for all of these years?! “It’s Arr-ya,” she said with a laugh. “But I don’t like that, so I call her Arr-ee-ya.” Well, if either is good for her, we guess it can be good for us too.

Unsurprisingly, the talk-happy Williams also divulged a bit of non-spoilery information about the show’s final season, which will be debuting in April 2019. (There will be six movie-length episodes in total, lest you forgot.) “I ended on the perfect scene. I was alone—shocker! Arya’s always bloody alone,” she said. “But I was alone and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill. I had seen the tears and heard the speeches.” Besides, she doesn’t think she could’ve handled any more bloodshed or tears, anyway: “I got to the end and I didn’t want more. I had exhausted every possible piece of Arya. And this season was quite big for me. I had a lot more to do. Mainly because there’s just less characters now, so everyone’s got more to do.”

Despite being a few months away, many Game of Thrones cast members have already been enjoying press rounds in anticipation of the show’s premiere. Earlier this month at New York Comic Con, for instance, Sophie Turner told a hilarious story about her and Williams’ self-care ritual after long, hard days on set. “We just used to sit there and eat and watch stupid videos and smoke weed,” she explained. “I don’t know if my publicist will kill me for saying this. We’d get high and then we’d sit in the bath together and we’d rub makeup brushes on our faces. It’s fun.”
