Selena Gomez's Blond Hair Took an Insane Amount of Time to Do


The world collectively lost its chill when Selena Gomez hit the red carpet on Sunday night. In a move no one saw coming—even her stans were shocked—the singer had gone blond seemingly overnight. Gomez’s shade, dubbed “Nirvana Blond” by her stylists, is shiny and grunge-chic, and looks surprisingly healthy, considering we saw Sel on social media with her signature dark hair a mere 12 hours beforehand. Which left a lot of people wondering if this was the work of a wig. Now, thanks to an Instagram post from expert stylist and Nine Zero Nine salon owner Riawna Capri, we know: (a) yes, Selena Gomez is really, truly a blond and (b) it took a damn long time to get her there.

Going from brunette to full-on platinum is no joke. To do it right takes time, and a rush job, even in a salon, can leave you bald or burned. That’s why it was so refreshing to see Capri get real about exactly how long it took to take Gomez from dark and glossy to peroxide blond. Spoiler: It took a mind-boggling amount of time and manpower. Capri’s caption was directed to stylists who might be faced with clients looking to go Gomez’s particular shade of icy grunge, but to be honest, it’s fascinating whether you’re an expert in a salon or can barely trim your own bangs.

According to the post Capri shared today, the entire process took “9 hours, about 300 foils, and 8 bowls of bleach, all with 2 stylists working together simultaneously.” Also required: an incredible amount of patience, which Capri and her team luckily have in spades. Capri also shared a rare glimpse into the painstaking process from start to finish: “It was a nice long patient process of baby fine slices, then going back and opening each foil and reapplying, but done in one sitting. Anything is possible in one day, it just takes time, no other clients, ha, and patience to maintain the integrity of the hair.”

With white-blond being the year’s biggest trend (and pastel/rainbow shades staying steadily popular), 2017 has brought no shortage of celebrities taking the platinum plunge. But it’s just as important for everyday folks to know how much time and effort it takes to go this blond overnight—if that’s even possible. Back when Khloé Kardashian made her evolution from dark to light, her colorist famously shared this chart of all the stages she went along the way as a warning call to all who wanted to copy.

Shout out to Capri for sharing a glimpse of the journey so we all can, in her words, “now be VERY patient with our stylists.” Obviously, it pays off.

A Shocking Amount of Women Say Period Pain Has Affected Their Job


Despite what some men try to claim, period pain is zero percent a myth for many women. Wrenching waves of cramps, throbbing lower back pain, and vise-like headaches are par for the course every month for some of us, with varying levels of pain—and that doesn’t include the sudden onsets of tears, general rage, or never-ending refrigerator raids others experience. But what’s even worse than having to go through all of this every 28 days or so is that we still have to schlep our bloated, pained selves to an office in work-appropriate clothing (versus our old college sweats), pretend like nothing’s wrong, and make it through the day.

As miserable as those nine-plus hours of work can feel, though, there’s probably some solidarity in the office: 42 percent of women said that period pain has affected their job, according to a recent YouGov survey. Unfortunately, 82 percent also said that their employers don’t make any accommodations for this recurring health issue that half the population faces.

According to the survey, most women whose period pain is so severe that they have to take time off don’t feel comfortable telling their employers the real reason. Out of the 30 percent of respondents who said their period pain was bad enough that they stayed home, 68 percent said that they didn’t tell their supervisors the real reason. Only 6 percent of the total respondents said that they’d be comfortable discussing with their boss that period pain was affecting their work.

There’s still a long way to go for most companies when it comes to acknowledging this, however—and sadly, there’s precedent for women to be nervous about discussing debilitating period pain with their supervisors. Although some companies allow women to take period leave, other women have been fired for getting their period on the job. In June, a model was allegedly fired by Hyundai after asking repeatedly (and not being allowed) to use the bathroom to change her tampon during an auto show she was working (Hyundai said the model was fired due to “poor performance”). More recently, a 911 call taker was allegedly fired due to accidental period leaks at work.

To be clear, no one is asking for a ready supply of hot water bottles in the break room (although…), but a little understanding—and maybe not getting fired—would go a long way in corporate culture.

Bloomingdales Is Opening Up Beauty Boutiques, and They're Carrying An Insane Amount of Stuff

It’s a good time to be a beauty obsessive: On the heels of Sephora bringing in everything from ColourPop to Pat McGrath and blowing our minds with its weekly deep-cut sales, Bloomingdales just announced that the beauty department we all know and love is about to change with a new concept that includes 800 products all under $100. That’s not a small brown bag situation.

Going by the name Glowhaus, the idea is built around discovering your new favorite things, Stacie Borteck, Bloomingdales’ vice president and divisional merchandise manager of cosmetics told Glamour. “It’s a space to browse and play in a low-pressure environment, anchored by a play table to hang out around, try products at and take selfies.” Only four of the 30 brands are Bloomies tried and true, so it’s an eye-opening assortment of new products—and the 800 products are pulled from labels you’d be more likely to spot on Instagram Discover than in the department store.

The focus is on color and tools, so look for the influencer-loved Vamp Stamp and Winky Lux’s trademark flower lipsticks, alongside products and brands like Lash Star Beauty’s Heated Lash Styler, Lime Crime’s Diamond Crushers, Rouge Bunny Rouge, Lanolips, and Sigma Beauty.

So between this and the aforementioned ColourPop in Sephora, we’re essentially done with shipping fees. According to WWD, as of now the products will be broken down by clean beauty, no-makeup makeup (so, Glossier-esque), and glitter and metallic-finish Insta makeup.

But that likely won’t stick around for long—Borteck says the emphasis will be on constantly keeping the selection fresh, with input from shoppers welcome. Per Bloomingdales, “brand agnostic associates” will be there to guide us through the stock, with makeup artists on hand to man the stations of products trending on social media.

Brand loyalty runs deep for both Sephora and Ulta, so on top of the Bloomie’s Loyallist program (double points every day on beauty purchases, and special point offerings during select events), Glowhaus is launching a sample program: for every $50 spent, you can choose one of four deluxe, under-the-radar samples.

The single downside is that for now, the boutiques will be limited to locations in Roosevelt Field, New York, and San Francisco, Sherman Oaks and South Coast Plaza in California. All open on August 30—but with a sell like 800 products under $100, Borteck says to look for more locations in 2018.
