Bachelor in Paradise's Tia Booth on Her Breakup With Colton Underwood: 'We're Not for Each Other'


Considering he originally wanted Tia to be the Bachelorette, you’d think Colton Underwood would have been happier on Bachelor in Paradise. After all, Tia was there and ready to commit to a life played out on Instagram together. But Paradise is never that easy, is it? Just a few episodes after Colton asked Tia to be his girlfriend, he realized he wasn’t ready to be in a relationship with her. Oof.

And now, he’s going to be the next Bachelor. After the news broke, Tia tweeted him congratulations, writing, “I hope your season is full of protein powder, puppies, and naps!” But there’s no denying the breakup was hard on her. So in the two months since Tia walked out of Paradise, does she still have romantic feelings for Colton? Is there more reality TV in her future? Here, she tells all.

Glamour: How are you doing?

Tia Booth: I’m good. Honestly, I’m really in a good place. I think Colton needs to find himself before he can let someone in who’s going to make him happy in a relationship. That’s what I’ve told him: that he needs to focus on himself and not try to have this perfect exterior. We talked about it as we were leaving [Paradise], and he was telling me, “You are someone who knows what you want, and I’m just kind of coming into that, like coming into my own.” I think he’s really got to get there before he can truly be happy with someone.

Glamour: You’re obviously in a better place now, but that was a hard breakup to watch. What happened after you left Paradise?

Tia: Yeah, that breakup was very difficult. One, because I didn’t see it coming, and two, because we both tried so hard to make it work. We wanted it to work so badly, but you can’t force something that’s not there. When I got back to the hotel, the producers told me, “We’ll let you call your mom if that will help you.” I said, “I can’t even call her right now because I would just be emotional and crying the whole time. I want to get over that first before I even talk to my family.” But when we got our phones back, Colton and I caught up and checked in on each other—just like we always have, and just like we always will do. I think that goes to show we did build this relationship on a friendship; if nothing else, we have that friendship. I think that helped us both, to be able to talk it out immediately and move forward from there.

Glamour: Do you still feel something for him romantically?

Tia: No. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Colton, just not in a romantic way. Colton is a great guy. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him or there was anything wrong with me; I just think that we’re not for each other.

Glamour: Raven came to visit you during Paradise. How did she react when you told her what happened with Colton?

Tia: [Laughs] I said, “Just to let you know, I’m on my way home.” She was shocked. She could not believe it, especially because the date that we had with her and Adam in Mexico was several days before [Colton and I broke up]. And I had to catch up with her on a Twitter feud that she was having [with Bekah Martinez] where she was defending me. We kind of caught up with that, and I let her know I was doing OK. She always calls and checks on me. She’s super supportive and always says the right things, so I always talk to her immediately.

Glamour: What’s next for you?

Tia: I’m not really sure what’s next for me. I’m still working and living my normal life in Arkansas, but I’m open to a relationship. I would love to meet the one and have a serious relationship with someone in whatever capacity that is.

Glamour: Would you sign up for a stint on a Bachelor franchise again, whether it’s Winter Games or Paradise?

Tia: I don’t know about more in the Bachelor franchise. Obviously, I love these people—that’s why I keep coming back—but honestly, leaving another reunion single kind of sucks. It wears on you knowing that you put yourself out there and tried it again and you’re still in this same position. I always learn so much about myself through this process and through this experience, but it can kind of wear on you.

'Bachelor in Paradise' Season 5, Episode 2 Recap: The Colton and Tia Drama, Continued


So much happened on tonight’s Bachelor in Paradise—most of it Colton and Tia drama, natch—so let’s not waste time with an intro, shall we? Here’s what went down. (Spoilers ahead, of course.)

We start in medias res with Jordan and Nick getting Chris all worked up about Colton by saying things like, “We need to cut the head off the snake NOW.” Colton, unaware this has been going on, joins them to say hey.

Meanwhile, Tia humblebrags to the rest of the group about her date with Colton. Astrid is not impressed: “Nobody trusts Colton, but Tia is so tunnel vision … she’s not paying attention to the signs that are literally buzzing at her.”

Back to the bros: Chris asks Colton about his intentions with Tia while Jordan and Nick serve as the world’s worst peanut gallery. Colton says he’s still exploring his options—and that includes Tia. Chris argues that this isn’t fair to Tia because she’s clearly more invested in the relationship; if Colton’s not sure about her, he should make a clean break. Now, I don’t love being on Chris’ side on any issue, but he has a point. Colton doesn’t want a relationship with Tia, but he’s fine stringing her along until something better comes his way.

Colton, however, says he’s been very clear with Tia about his feelings, or lack thereof. Cut to Tia, gloating about their kiss and saying, “This could be the start of an amazing relationship.” Oops.

The next morning, Chris works off his anger toward Colton through tai chi. (Or something? It’s hard to say what Chris is doing.) There’s a lot of references and jokes to the Karate Kid scene, but honestly this feels more like the Hot Rod version to me.

Moving on to the other people in paradise: A date card shows up for Kenny. Yay! We need more Kenny time. He starts auditioning date partners: Bibiana, Nysha, Chelsea, Astrid, and Krystal, who Kenny eventually asks out. This annoys Kevin, who also has a crush on Krystal but is too Canadian to tell Kenny to back off.

“I’m a passionate Capricorn, so watch out.” – Jordan. As a regular Capricorn, I don’t know what this means.

Meanwhile, Jordan’s bummed he didn’t get a date card, so he invites Annaliese to dinner. She accepts. Of course, David immediately pulls Annaliese aside to “warn” her about Jordan. David, have you learned nothing?! I think Jordan could easily pull a Regina George on you:

David’s all, “I don’t mean to dwell on someone else, but… LET ME SPEND OUR ENTIRE CONVERSATION TALKING ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE.” Annaliese listens patiently before telling David she’s going to ignore everything he’s said. Jordan’s interested in her, so that’s good enough for now.

He says, “I just don’t want to see you get hurt.” Ugh, what is with the guys this season? Too many of them position themselves as “looking out” for the women in the villa when really it’s just a front for their man-baby drama.

David’s plan doesn’t work anyway, because Jordan’s date turns out to be kinda cute: champagne on the beach. At one point, Annaliese tells Jordan that she’s an artist and he says he’s “obsessed” with people who “are talented with their hands.” LOL. Somehow, this charms Annaliese and they end their date with a kiss. Looks like Jordan will get her rose this week…unless David claws his way in.

Moving on! Wells is so overwhelmed by everyone’s problems, he brought in a back-up bartender: Yuki, whom you’ll remember as the best part of Bachelor Winter Games. Her drinks may not be good, but her smile and cute crop top are fun.

Time to check in with Kenny and Krystal’s date: a lucha libre match. It’s a good pick; Kenny, a professional wrestler, gets to show off his knowledge and skills, while Krystal can relate to all the glitter. At one point, Kenny gets into a fight with the villain and goes on stage to fight him. It’s so fun! Remind me, why have we gone so long without Kenny time? Give him your rose, Krystal!

Later, they talk about Krystal’s time on The Bachelor. She admits she wasn’t on her best behavior, but she’s learned from the experience and wants to be better. Kenny gets it: The show is a pressure cooker, and everyone has a moment of weakness. They end the date with a kiss, while poor Kenny sweats profusely.

Back at the villa, Kevin—who was just moping about Krystal seconds earlier—has already moved on to Astrid. They make out on the beach and now he’s all, “I think Astrid and I are a better fit.” OK, dude.

Meanwhile, Tia’s telling the group she’s dead set on giving Colton her rose…as he’s busy flirting on the beach with…I want to say Angela, maybe? Bibiana and Kendall try to talk some sense into her. Tia understands what they’re staying, but that door is still very much wide open.

The cocktail party is the next day, and the ladies have all the power. So, as they say on Love Island, time for the guys to get grafting. Chris Harrison joins the crew to tell them two guys will be going home this week, so they should “fight for their life.” Are they, uh, dying? I hate to question the CH, but strange choice of words, no?

The guys really take this to heart and step up their game. Jordan got Annaliese a giant stuffed dog. Nick attempts to rekindle a flame that was never there in the first place with Chelsea. And Joe has a sweet conversation with Kendall, during which he tells her he only wants her rose. He might have some competition in John, though, who tells Kendall he’s interested and goes in for a kiss.

Everyone’s pairing off, so Tia decides it’s time to finally sit down with Colton and get an answer. (Like me, Bibiana is annoyed and says she’d be a-OK if Colton left.) Colton tells Tia he still “owes” it to himself to talk to other people. When she asks him if he’d be bothered to see her date other people, he says no. Oof. Tia tests this by telling Colton that she and Chris have kissed, but he’s not bothered by it. Then Colton hints that he’s still not over Becca, to which Tia asks, “Then what are you doing here?” Excellent point. She’s had enough and says, “I’m not your first choice, but I don’t want to be your second choice.” It’s a good line, but she loses some steam when she basically tells Colton that he’s going to leave if he doesn’t get on the same page with her. Colton says that’s too much pressure, but she doesn’t want to give him a rose if he’s just going to turn around and date other women in front of her.

So, Tia moves on to Chris the Goose. Chris tells Tia right away that he knows what he wants—her—and she admits she’s been waiting all day to hear that (…from Colton, but whatever). She tells Chris that she’s ready to “go for the right person.” I guess that means him. Anyway, they kiss.

Faced with going home, Colton tries to flirt with Angela but she’s heard the talk around the villa and isn’t sold. Colton’s nervous about whether or not he’ll get a rose. Who cares!

Time for the rose ceremony: Krystal gives Kenny her rose, Astrid gives Kevin her rose, and Tia gives her rose to Chris.

“I don’t want to brag because that’s just not me.” – Chris. But it is you!

Next, Kendall gives her rose to Joe, Annaliese gives hers to Jordan, and Nysha and Eric couple up. (Where’s the screen time for this love story?) Then, shock, Chelsea gives her rose to David. Angela gives her rose to John. Bibiana has the last rose of the night, and she introduces a major twist by giving it to Colton. WHAT? Why?

Her reasoning is questionable—she wants to give Colton the change to show his real self or something? This means that Nick and Wills are heading home. Bibiana, what have you done?! I can’t take another week of Colton drama, no thank you. (A plea to the Bachelor in Paradise editors: Please give us more time with literally anyone else.)

The next day, everyone talks about how annoyed they are with the Tia-Colton debacle. If the people who literally have nothing better to do than gossip around a pool are over this, why are we the viewers expected to care?

It gets worse: Becca has arrived in paradise to talk to the girls but also send Colton into a spiral. This is his reaction:

Through tears, Colton admits he wasn’t ready to come to paradise yet because he’s still in love with Becca. She’s ready to give him some closure, but we’ll see how that talk goes next time.

How Slashed by Tia Set a New Standard for Instagram Fashion Brands


Designer Teni Adeola is an extraordinary student. A rising senior at The New School in New York City, Adeola—who is more popularly known as “Tia”—spends hours in the library, alternating between studying for her media studies courses and looking for inspiration for her growing fashion brand, Slashed by Tia. It’s this drive that has helped her build a company that, since its launch in 2016, has amassed a massive Instagram presence and caught the attention of superstars like SZA,, Lorde, and Gigi Hadid.

Did we mention she’s just 21?

Once you land on Slashed by Tia’s Instagram page, you’re met with dramatic, ruffled blouses and skirts in sheer pastels. These have become the brand’s signatures, making it a familiar name among the fashion community. Never mind that the designer behind them has no major design house gigs on her résumé—rather, is balancing a heavy academic schedule with a budding brand.

Tia began her career in fashion as an intern in Lagos, Nigeria. She was 12 when she was given an opportunity to work under designer Ituen Basi. Around that time, she began reading fashion history books, designer biographies, and old magazines; as well as taking more traditional, hands-on sewing classes and textile workshops. Basi would urge Tia to pursue this type of fashion scholarship and commit to research before designing and experimenting with complex silhouettes—a lesson that remains with her today.

For someone who has pretty much built her brand on Instagram, Tia’s process for finding inspiration is somewhat surprising. Reference books rather than social media? “I know it sounds kind of nerdy—like, you’re a designer, why are you reading?” says Tia. “If you want to do something that really stands out and if you want to do something that’s like, ‘Okay, that’s by her,’ just go to the library and read. Look through those archives, it’s really worth it.”

Ultimately, it was those books that lead her to ruffles, one of her brand’s most distinctive elements. During her senior year of high school, while studying at a boarding school in London, Tia wrote a dissertation on fashion and art from the 16th century Spanish Renaissance period. “I loved how the royals were painted, and the extravagant clothes they would wear,” she remembers. And that involved ruffled garments: “[They were] something that they always had, no matter how big or small… They just always looked so good painted by some of my favorite painters. They were always something that stuck with me.”

In Slashed by Tia’s world, though, ruffles are the uniform of a very different demographic: women who are unafraid to challenge societal norms and make daring fashion statements. “A lot of the time people wear see-through clothes and it’s often described as tacky or distasteful, but I feel like with my clothes, even though it may be see-through and you may be seeing boobs, there definitely is an artistic aspect to it,” Tia says. Many of her sheer-ruffle pieces expose nipples and are cut short, revealing quite a bit of arm, stomach, and leg. “With my clothes I definitely wanted to make them slightly more risque. It just goes against the whole idea of ruffles at the time and just how women were viewed at the time.”

Her brand message and design ethos has resonated with the fashion-obsessed, socially conscious Instagram generation: Some of the brand’s most high-profile clients, including Kali and SZA, got in touch with Tia via DM, the designer says. Kali wore a number of custom Slashed by Tia pieces while on tour; SZA wore a pink set for her Coachella 2018 performance. Lorde, Dua Lipa, and Abra have also donned Slashed by Tia, on-stage and off.

“I feel like when I make my clothes, I make them so the girl walks into the room and everyone’s like, ‘OMG, her outfit’,” Tia says. “I feel like you kind of need that with stage presence: Everyone needs to be like, ‘She looks amazing’… I do consider that when I’m making clothes. I’m like, Okay, what’s going to turn heads?”

Slashed by Tia’s celebrity clientele has attracted even more eyeballs to the brand. And the designer has capitalized on its ever-growing following to make a statement about diversity in fashion, sharing elaborate, conceptual lookbooks featuring primarily models of color surrounded by greenery and ornate interiors (inspired by Tia’s art history background).

Tia typically works with an all-woman production team to create video and photo editorials that play off Slashed by Tia’s soft, feminine embellishments: One of early photo shoot featured models adorned in her ruffle designs skateboarding around New York; a recent video lookbook featured a sword wielding model strutting through a Victorian-style home in a sheer ruffle two-piece set, surrounded by a striking crew of equally bad ass models.

Tia makes it a point to cast women of color—and black woman, in particular—in her campaigns because of their absence in the Renaissance paintings she studied, loved, and felt inspired by. “It’s so interesting because when I was doing my research in high school, I remember Googling ‘black people in renaissance paintings’,” she explains. “It was one, rare, and two, they were never really wearing ruffles. It was definitely something I wanted to incorporate into modern day dress and [make] accessible for the everyday girl to wear.” (The price point of the collection also supports this mission: Everything’s under $300.)

Slashed by Tia has participated in runway shows in Lagos, Paris, and New York, but will make her official New York Fashion Week debut in September, for the Spring 2018 season. Tia’s also finishing her degree, expecting to graduate next year.

Right now, her weekdays are spent in class, her evenings on the brand (she’s still a one-woman show, managing business operations, production planning, and marketing herself). But once Slashed by Tia’s her full-time occupation? Well, it’ll surely open her A-list client book up to even more people looking for edgy ruffle designs, meticulously slashed by Tia.

Colton Underwood Admits He Wanted Tia Booth to Be The Bachelorette: 'We Needed More Time'


The Bachelorette‘s Colton Underwood had one of the more emotional moments on tonight’s Men Tell All, with the focus less on his feelings for former contestant Tia and more about his decision not to have sex. “People think I’m less of a man because I haven’t had sex, and that’s hard for me to hear,” he said as he teared up. “I feel like a normal guy, so it’s hard when you hear all the negative things. It’s my choice and hopefully it’s something that’s respected from women and in the public.”

After the show taped, it was clear that Underwood was still affected by what happened on stage—especially because of a comment fellow contestant Jean Blanc made about Underwood’s virginity. “I will never talk to him again,” Underwood tells us. “His comment was disgusting and uncalled for.”

But with his journey about to continue on Bachelor in Paradise, there’s obviously more drama in store for the former football player. After all, his former fling Tia Booth will joining him in Mexico. “It’s emotional,” he says of the experience. “It’s full of unexpected surprises.”

Things got emotional on Men Tell All tonight. How do you feel now that it’s over?

Colton Underwood: I still obviously feel a little emotional. I didn’t have plans to talk about my virginity because I feel like it was played out and it’s been a hot topic for the last couple weeks. [My virginity is] never easy to talk about, but anytime I do, it helps me grow as a person. So, I do feel good about that. It was hard for me to even bring it up at first on the show. I kept beating around the bush by saying I’m not that experienced. Now I can finally say, “I’m a virgin. I haven’t had sex” without a tremble in my voice.

Before you filmed the season, did you know this was going to become a topic of conversation?

Colton: I didn’t have a game plan with my virginity going into the show. I didn’t know if I was going to bring it up. When I did bring it up in the Bahamas, I wanted to make sure that [Becca] knew before she made her decision on whose family she wanted to meet. As hard as that conversation was, it was so good for me to actually say it out loud and go from six people to now six million people knowing it. People can agree or disagree with me, but hopefully some of them have a respect for me and my choice.

You and Jean Blanc had a tense moment during Men Tell All after he insulted your virginity. Did you address him after?

Colton: Jean Blanc is one of the guys that I never talked to after the show and, moving forward, I will never talk to. I think his comment was disgusting and uncalled for. It was so inappropriate in 2018—in the year of the women—and [he’s] going to be disrespectful to a whole gender? He’s going to use that word to describe the female anatomy and to call me out? And think he’s doing something positive [by saying that]? It is what it is, but I’m never going to talk to the dude again, so I don’t care.

Moving on: Was there any part of you that had hoped Tia would be the Bachelorette?

Colton: I’m not going to lie, yeah. The one thing that hindered Tia and I’s relationship and played a factor into it…it was hard for me to get a read off of that weekend that we spent together, whether we could be good for each other. She was going back to Arkansas, and I was going back to Colorado. We needed more time. I needed more time in that relationship to see [where things could go]. I was very up and front and honest, like, “I hope it’s you. I’m just letting you know I’m going on.” She knew from day two of us talking that I was a finalist for the show, and I said how cool would it be [if it was Tia]. When I found out it was Becca, [Tia] said, “Becca’s a great person, and I can’t wait for you to see your journey and hear about your experience. I’m so jealous. That’s awesome. You’re going to be with my friends.” That was it. It was very supportive. Tia and I’s relationship moved more into a friendship those last two weeks leading up to me leaving for filming.

You’ll be on Bachelor in Paradise with Tia. How did that go?

Colton: Paradise is emotional. I think there’s a lot of conversations that need to be had. It’s full of unexpected surprises that are both good, happy, sad, funny, all the emotions. I felt everything in Paradise.
