Ruby Rose Takes Glamour's 'Big Questions' Survey


You may know Ruby Rose as the outspoken tattooed antagonist inmate Stella Carlin on Season 3 of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black or maybe you’ve seen her act as a badass assassin in the blockbuster action movie xXx: Return of Xander Cage or as a villain in the John Wick series.

Now, the 32-year-old actress, model, DJ hybrid is starring in another action flick, The Meg, out August 10, in which she battles a 75-foot prehistoric shark terrorizing the ocean off the coast of China. To promote her new role, Rose candidly answered “The Big Questions” for Glamour’s September issue below.

What’s your full name, and where does it come from?

Ruby Rose Langenheim. My mom wanted to call me Katinka…but at the last minute called me Ruby. I don’t think Katinka would’ve been the right name for me.

What’s your idea of true happiness?

Peace. If you can’t get peace, then dogs. Dogs help.

On the other hand, what is your idea of hell on Earth?

Being a chicken in a cage like a farm chicken. I’m vegan so I feel like I’ve watched too many documentaries and rewatching Dirty Money and Rotten have really just put in my mind again how bad it is.

If you could be anyone, real or fictional, who would you be?

A Ninja Turtle. Leonardo, for sure. Donatello was a bit boring, Michelangelo didn’t do anything except order the pizza, and Raphael was too serious. Leonardo always just saved the day. And then you have an inbuilt squad and a group of friends. You get to eat pizza, you get to wear a cool outfit, and save the world. I feel like that would be so much fun. And live in a sewer and not have to deal with people.

If the apocalypse comes, what skill could you contribute to the new society?

With all of the films I’ve done with sharks and zombies, I could teach people how to avoid dying.

What is something you wish you’d written it could be a book or a song, a movie, a poem?

It would be pretty cool to be the person who wrote The Godfather.

What’s your most irrational fear?

I do not like saying them out loud because I feel like you manifest things that you say a lot. So if you have a fear of something and then you say it, you publish it, then it’s legitimately a solidified fear. Whereas if I just ignore it and not talk about it and tell myself I don’t have any fears then I become fearless.

You have to give up sex, booze, or laughter. Which do you pick?

Booze. Life without booze is more energy, less hangovers, and sounds kind of like a good thing.

What advice would you give to 18-year-old Ruby Rose?

“Be nicer to yourself, and don’t take everything so personally.”

What advice would your 18-year-old self give to you now?

“You have nothing to complain about because your life is amazing. You’d betterbe appreciative.”

'The Bachelorette' Season 14 Episode 7 Recap: One of Becca's Guys Just Revealed a 'Big Secret'


I’ll admit it was a little harder than usual to sit on my couch and snark about things like Blake’s dancing given that tonight’s episode of The Bachelorette was interrupted by President Trump’s Supreme Court nomination. Like, no big, this is a person who will influence our country for generations to come. But I’ll let our very intelligent and hard-working news and culture team tell you all about Brett Kavanaugh’s qualifications—read that here—and channel all of my feelings about it into this recap instead. Spoilers ahead.

We’re in the Bahamas this week, and Becca tells Chris Harrison she’s looking forward to “no drama.” LOL, we’ll see how that turns out. She also admits she’s starting to catch feelings for a few of the guys, though she’s afraid something will ruin it. Something like…a social media controversy coming to light right as the season airs? Maybe?

Anyway, Becca tells the guys that this week’s format is a little different: There will be three one-on-one dates with roses and a group date with one rose, and no rose ceremony. Colton gets the first solo date of the week, and the reaction from the other guys is awkward. “None of us can see her with Colton,” Blake confesses. Then we learn a bombshell: Colton’s a hiding a “big” secret from Becca. He’s a virgin.

Cut to a million soundbites from Becca about how hunky Colton is and how their relationship is full of “passion” and how he can “pick me up and do whatever he wants.” Editors, I thought you were supposed to be on Becca’s side? What gives? It gets worse: Right as Colton is about to tell Becca that he’s a virgin, a man rolls up in a yellow boat to tell Becca she needs more “conch” in her life. Yes, Colton and Becca are going diving for conchs solely so The Bachelorette can make a bunch of penis jokes.

“I’m hoping Colton dives deep for that conch.” – Becca

The two learn that the conch’s pistol is considered “Bahamian Viagra”; they try it but Becca, still ignorant about Colton’s sexual history, assures us they don’t need an aphrodisiac. That night, Colton finally—finally!—tells Becca he’s a virgin. She responds by excusing herself from the table, leaving him to sweat it out alone. When she eventually returns, Colton explains that he’s not waiting for marriage—he’s just waiting for “the right heart”—and Becca assures him she’s not one to judge. For her, the fact that it’s not a “marriage thing” but rather “a heart thing” is a good sign. TBD if Becca’s the “right heart” when it comes time for the fantasy suites, but Becca gives Colton a rose.

Garrett gets the next one-on-one date: a seaplane to a private island, but instead of looking out at the gorgeous views they just make out. When the plane lands, Becca yells “wooo!” and confirms something I’ve long suspected: She’s a total woo girl.

On the beach, Becca and Garrett do that awkward pose where she stands in front of him and cranes her neck around to kiss. Just turn your body around!

They stop kissing long enough for Garrett to admit that it’s been tough seeing the other guys go out on dates with her. He opens up a little more about his divorce later that night. According to him, his ex was “hot-headed” and he felt like he had to change who he was to make her happy. Becca admits this makes her nervous—that he wouldn’t be his real self around her—but he claims he’s learned by now not to let a red flag linger. They do not talk about his social media history, which is a red flag I would like to not keep lingering. Anyway, he says he’s falling in love, and she gives him a rose and calls him a “stand-up man.” Hmm.

The next day, Becca takes Blake to a beach party where the Baha Men are performing. This is much more my speed—way better than conch jokes or spending more than 20 minutes with Garrett. They’re having a good time, until Blake confesses that he’s gotten in his head this week thinking about her with the other guys. Over dinner, he opens up about his parents—his mom had an affair with his basketball coach/English teacher when he was in high school—and how it’s made him realize he wants his family to be better at communicating. Then he tells Becca he’s in love with her. They kiss, and he gets a rose.

In the morning, Wills, Leo, and Jason meet Becca for the dreaded three-on-one date. Her time with Wills and Jason goes well, but when she sits down with Leo he admits that he feels like he needs more time with her to get to where some of the other guys are at in their feelings. She agrees and says it’s better if she doesn’t bring him to hometowns. So with that, Becca, Wills, and Jason get in the boat and leave poor Leo wandering around alone on the island. Luckily, if there’s anybody capable of swimming back to the Baha Mar, it’s Leo.

“I can’t freaking wait for you to come to freaking Buffalo.” – Jason

That evening, Becca calls Jason out for moving a little slower than the other guys, but he says he does feel strongly about what they have. Wills, meanwhile, gets emotional as he describes his love for Becca. Apparently that’s not enough though, because she dumps him moments later—in front of Jason, no less. So rude! Wills deserves better, and also his shirt is excellent tonight.

Next week: It’s hometown dates! “He’d be a hot dad.” “I don’t want you to pick him.”

Christina Aguilera Takes Glamour's 'Big Questions' Survey


Like any pop star with staying power, Christina Aguilera has managed to master the art of reinvention. She intrigued us after bursting on the scene with “Genie in a Bottle” during 1999’s pop music renaissance, shocked us by separating herself from dozens of similar acts with chaps and piercings during 2002’s “Dirrty” period, then produced hit after hit—and a new pin-up look—with 2006’s jazz and soul inspired album Back to Basics. And that’s just a corner of her resume.

Now, the 37-year-old is switching things up again with the release of her sixth studio album Liberation (available to buy and stream now), which is her first since 2012. And it definitely commands your attention. (Just watch her passionate “Fall in Line” performance with Demi Lovato at the 2018 Billboard Music awards if you need convincing.)

To celebrate the new album, Aguilera answered “The Big Questions”—a rapid-fire assortment of things you definitely want to know—for Glamour’s August issue.

What’s your full name, and where does it come from?

Christina Maria Aguilera. I’m half Ecuadorian, half Irish. My mom said she named me after a princess.

What’s your idea of true happiness?

The idea of true happiness is seriously just peace of mind. No deadlines and no judgments.

What’s your idea of hell on Earth?

Suppression. Well my whole album is called Liberation for a reason. It’s about the anti-being suppressed and feeling stifled. There’s nothing worse in the world than feeling like you’re in a stifled place where you’re being told how to be, how to dress, how to act, how to feel. And it happens all the time. So I think at a certain level maybe we’re all a little suppressed. But you know yeah. That is definitely hell on earth to not be free.

What’s a headline about yourself you’d love to read?

Well I’m going to go for the unattainable. But these are pretty off the beaten path questions and a little bit imagination so “Christina Aguilera Does The Unimaginable Solves World Hunger” Or “Bridges Social Divide.”

Would you rather stop time or speed it up. And why?

Stop time for sure. It’s going too fast! My kids are growing up way too soon I’m like oh my dear lord. Where is time going? So definitely to be able to freeze time. I would do it in a heartbeat.

If you could phone a friend right now, who would it be?

I think Priscilla. Priscilla always makes me happy. She’s done my hair, my extensions for so friggin’ long. I’ve known her forever. She’s my ride or die.

If you could be anyone, who would you be?

Wonder Woman. Real people are too complicated for me. I want to kick some ass!

What’s the best invention of all time?

Social media. It allows you to speak your mind and squash rumors. But it’s also the worst, for so many reasons.

What three things would you take to a desert island?

I’d need company, so either my dog or my man, water or wine, and definitely a boat, so I can get the fuck out of there.

How do you stand up for what you believe in?

You just do it! Very Nike campaign, but you have to be unafraid to go against the grain.

You have to give up sex, booze, or laughter. Pick one.

Booze. I’d have to start being a good stoner then, I guess.

The dark. I sleep with candles lit, a night-light, a nineties sitcom in the background, and a sound machine…. Yeah, it’s special.

Start yoga. It helps everything.

This Photo of the 'Big Little Lies' Cast Back Together Has Us So Ready for Season Two


The ladies of Monterey are officially back together, and we already can’t wait for the second season of Big Little Lies. On Sunday, Zoë Kravitz, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley shared a photo of the four of them going to see Woodley’s new movie Adrift, being the loving and supportive friends we finally saw their characters becoming in the last scene of season one.

They all shared the exact same photo, but their heartfelt captions all conveyed their support for Woodley:

“What a night at the movies ! @adriftmovie Blew me away!!” Witherspoon wrote. “Seeing this incredible true story , i was on the edge of my seat, cheering on @shailenewoodley & @mrsamclaflin who are stuck adrift on a sailboat in the Pacific Ocean. Shailene is outstanding in a rare performance of woman vs. nature that is not to be missed. You must see this movie !! ??”

“Saw the unbelievable true story, ADRIFT, with amazing Shai. Wow. Go. ♥️,” Dern wrote on hers.

“EVERYONE ! Runnnnnnn, don’t walk to see @adriftmovie !” Kravitz captioned her pic. “What an inspiring, badass, beautiful, CRAZY and TRUE story about the power of the human spirit. With stunning performances by @mrsamclaflin and @shailenewoodley • so proud of you girl. ♥️ THANK YOU FOR TELLING THIS STORY. #adrift”

Pretty great, right? Woodley was, of course, appreciative of the sisterhood vibes herself: “WHAT TRUE SUPPORT AND SISTERHOOD LOOKS LIKE. i feel so shown up for. #adrift @adriftmovie,” she wrote on her own post of the pic.

It’s great to see the cast hanging out off the screen, but Big Little Lies fans are also getting pumped for their return to the screen. We don’t know a great deal about it yet, but we have learned some details over the last few months: Most of the original cast is returning—even Alexander Skarsgård, whose character Perry was murdered at the end of season one (so expect some flashback scenes).

The one main character who seems to be missing from the above movie theater reunion is Nicole Kidman—but don’t worry. We definitely know she’s returning for season two, plus she’s already shared photos of her scenes with new castmate Meryl Streep, who’s joining the show to play Kidman’s mother-in-law.

Unfortunately, season two won’t be released until early 2019, so we’ve got a lot of waiting left to do. But hopefully we’ll continue to see more behind-the-scenes and off-screen moments in the meantime. Witherspoon has shared a few other photos from set, including this one where she’s wearing a sweatshirt all BLL fans will covet.

Plus, she shared a photo with her on-screen daughter, Kathryn Newton, whose character Abigail ended season one deciding to not sell her virginity online and moved in with her dad and stepmom (played by James Tupper and Kravitz).

Woodley also shared what seems like a behind-the-scenes moment at what fans have identified as the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Maybe Jane has gotten a new job? Or perhaps the actress was just enjoying a day of playing tourist.

Nicole Kidman was back in character in April when she shared this photo of her greeting local fans on set.

Laura Dern was also back on set in April, captioning this ‘gram “Off to work #biglittlelies2.”

2019 can’t come soon enough, but we’re loving these photos of cast camaraderie—and sisterhood—in the meantime.

'Big Bang Theory' Star Kunal Nayyar and His Wife Neha Kapur Nayyar on Their Whirlwind Love Story


“The first time I saw Kunal, he was wearing a trucker hat, cutoff gloves, hipster glasses, and a scarf,” fashion designer Neha Kapur Nayyar recalls of meeting Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar in 2009. “It took me a while to find him among all that.” Though she wasn’t impressed with her future husband’s accessories and was oblivious to his fame—“I had never seen the show,” she admits—Kunal was already a goner. “My first thought was, This is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,” he says. “My second thought was, She’s way out of my league.” The two married in New Delhi two years later. The cutoff gloves stayed home. Here, we asked the so-gorgeous-it-hurts duo some very personal questions.

How do you each define love?

Neha Kapur Nayyar: Selfless.

Kunal Nayyar: Love is not perfect, and that’s OK.

Fill in the blank: Our love story began on….

NKN: December 24, 2009. New Dehli, India.

Fill in the blank: The first thing I thought when I saw my significant other was….

KN: She’s tall.

NKN: Interesting hat. [Laughs]

Your relationship described in three words. Go.

KN: BFF. Best friends forever.

Give me two more.

KN: BFF. Not so serious. Wait, that’s not right. Light. Like, relaxed. Laughter.

NKN: Comfortable. Companion. Best friend.

The best thing I’ve ever learned from my significant other is….

NKN: Selflessness.

KN: Clarity.

Not how to dress?

KN: Oh, that’s funny. I like that answer! Can I steal it? OK, I’ll do how to dress.

The pop song that best describes us is….

KN: That’s a great question. Why are you looking at me? [Laughs]

NKN: We listen to a lot of hip hop.

KN: We gotta come back to that! It’s gotta be something good. “Baby Got Back”? [Laughs] What about “I Love You Like A Love Song?”

NKN: No. [Laughs]

One thing my significant other does not know about him or herself is….

KN: She giggles in her sleep.

Is that true?

NKN: I have no idea! [Laughs]

KN: It’s creepy.

NKN: Thanks! [Laughs] I think when Kunal is singing on his own without anyone around him, I think it’s the most beautiful thing. He doesn’t realize how good he sounds.

What is your significant other’s superpower?

KN: Neha has incredible ability to be inviting. She creates a beautiful, familiar, inviting atmosphere wherever she goes.

NKN: Kunal makes everyone feel very safe. Very secure. You can always lean on him. He should be the first phone call when you need someone.

What’s the secret to love that lasts?

KN: The ability to forgive.

NKN: Yeah. I’d say space.

I know that my significant other loves me when he/she does….

NKN: Kunal always wants to make sure I’m OK when I’m traveling, or with my food, so he always takes care of it one step before I even ask him. He’s got it covered.

KN: I know my wife loves me when I come home and it smells like Indian food.

NKN: Oh, is that a little nudge? [Laughs]

When did you know you were ready to propose?

KN: Oh, that’s a good question. I mean, when I went to secure the ring. When I wrote a check for the ring. [Laughs] That’s a good question.

How did you know she was “The One”?

KN: Oh, when she met my family for the first time! There was an unspoken language. She just knew how to interact, be with, give love to, put herself in a very….

NKN: It was very organic.

KN: Yes. She was very organic with my family.

And how did you know he was the guy?

NKN: I came to visit him three weeks after I met him for the first time. I can spend hours talking to Kunal, and it just felt like I had always known him, so when I came to visit him in LA, it just seemed so right. I think I was always ready to marry him.

What advice would you give to somebody that doesn’t know whether they’re in the right relationship for the long haul?

NKN: I say take time. Spend time and take as long as you want before…nothing is out of bounds, no time is running out. Just take your time.

KN: Only do it for yourself. Don’t do it for your parents, your family, her or him. Do it truly for you. That sounds bad, but what I mean is don’t do it for anyone other than yourself.

NKN: Yeah, no pressure.

What are you most proud of about each other?

KN: Neha left her country as an adult to move here for marriage, and I really commend her on her ability to start a company, to make friends outside of my circle of friends, to make a life here on her own, where redefining herself [as an adult] in a new country, she’s been very good at. It takes a lot of courage. It’s not easy at all.

NKN: I think the fact that he doesn’t necessarily play his professional life out too much to people, and how humble he stays, especially with how big the show is, and how far and wide the fans are spread. He just completely stays committed and humble and dedicated and hard-working.

What 'Big Little Lies' Means for Women in 2017


The critical acclaim for HBO’s Big Little Lies isn’t surprising to anyone who has seen it, nor is it shocking that the mini-series has received numerous nominations and awards. In addition to winning eight Emmys (including the coveted Outstanding Limited Series), it was just nominated for six Golden Globe Awards, with five of them acknowledging the outstanding acting in the first season. And while the series certainly delivers a compelling storyline, intriguing characters, and a suspenseful central mystery, its overarching themes of empowerment are what became extra noteworthy, especially in light of what 2017 has meant for women.

The series’ five female leads—Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Bonnie, and Renata—are flawed in many ways. They’re extremely privileged and unlikeable at times. And yet, in other moments, they’re so relatable. Ultimately, they reflect traits we recognize within ourselves, even if we don’t want to. These characteristics are the kind that are often awarded to male leads in television (think: Don Draper or Walter White), but instead of presenting women through an idealistic lens, Big Little Lies offers its female characters with a sense of bluntness. These women are all finding their voices in their own way, and they’re done apologizing for it.

The final scenes of the first season leave the viewer with a powerful image. Despite their differences, these women rally together to unite against Celeste’s husband, Perry, who is revealed to be both a domestic abuser and a rapist. (Of course, the audience knows all along that Perry abuses Celeste; it’s the plot-twist that he’s also Jane’s assaulter that some viewers didn’t see coming.) And while the women are forming an alliance against Perry, they also form a barrier of support for both Celeste and Jane. This unity happens almost wordlessly, as though it was a natural progression.

It’s hard not to equate those visuals with what’s been happening over the past few months for women all over the world. Ever since the initial story broke about Harvey Weinstein earlier this fall, the floodgates have opened and paved the way for many women to speak up about traumas they otherwise might have kept inside for months, years, or decades. The #MeToo movement on social media has provided a platform for survivors of assault and harassment to come forward, knowing they’ll have the support of others who are doing the same. And for the survivors who choose to remain silent, the wave of women coming forward has undoubtedly helped many feel less alone. That same solidarity exists within the pages of the Big Little Lies script, albeit in a different way.

Of course, the story behind Big Little Lies is not new—Liane Moriarty published the novel that inspired the series in 2014—but it might not be a coincidence that the series became a huge hit at the same time that women all over the world became angrier and angrier. We’re fed up with a culture that blames victims and doesn’t bring consequences to dangerous men. After all, it was a little over a year ago when the Access Hollywood tapes went viral and the world heard Donald Trump bragging about grabbing women “by the pussy.” And yet he still went on to become president, an event that undoubtedly created a breeding ground for the #MeToo movement. An undeniable rage has been bubbling under the surface, waiting to break through at the right moment.

That same subtle rage exists throughout the first seven episodes of Big Little Lies. It’s seen in every one of the female leads, and it manifests in different ways. For Celeste, it’s every step she takes to free herself from Perry’s abuse. In Jane’s case, it’s the gun she keeps underneath her pillow, the anguish she feels when her son asks about his father. For Renata, it’s the ache for justice, the relentless pursuit of vindication on behalf of her daughter. Madeline’s rage stems from her unhappiness, the bleakness she feels about her life but masks with a perky smile. And for Bonnie, it’s constantly being misunderstood, the endless frustration of never being adequately listened to.

At various points in the season, we see the raw emotions of all of these women rise to the peak, along with a breaking in their composure. It happens in bits and pieces—like Jane running breathlessly on the beach, or Renata screaming her head off by the pool. It’s over as fast as it began, but those moments—those tiny slivers of release—are so, so familiar for women. We feel them every day, over and over and over, and they’ve been magnified over the past few months. But for many of us, we’re no longer holding back. We are no longer apologizing. We’re no longer afraid.

The timing of Big Little Lies could not be more perfect in conjunction with the national conversation, and the series’ critical recognition is concrete proof that viewers want to see more shows that empower women and encourage them to use their voices. There isn’t a woman in this world that hasn’t wanted to scream endlessly into a void at some point in her life; Big Little Lies showed us that it’s OK to do just that.
