Adam Brody on Dating Fails, Romance, and Why He and Leighton Meester Are 'Big Hand Holders'

What’s the most surprising place you’ve hooked up with someone?

My apartment. But it was a loft, and my dad was sleeping around the corner. If you want to consider it gross, that’s fine. It also ultimately proved worthwhile—but some people would definitely find that gross.

Fill in the blank: “I love when my partner…”__

We’re big hand holders. Physical affection is very nice to me, it doesn’t necessarily have to be sexual.

You have a full day to binge-watch whatever the hell you want: What do you pick?

I loved the first season of Fleabag, but haven’t watched the new season. So I’d have to say Fleabag season two.

What’s the sexiest thing about yourself?

My feet. They’re nice, and I’ve never had any complaints about them from myself. It’s just like, “Hey, those are cool. Those are nice looking feet.”

What’s the weirdest thing you do in your alone time?

It’s not even in my alone time. I’ll reenact a conversation I’ve had or I would have, and I’ll be sort of mouthing the words. It’s so embarrassing, but my wife always asks me about it and forces me to answer. I think the first time—it’s just such a convoluted and backwards way to explain how I was doing this—but I was talking to a horse, like breaking a wild horse. My wife was like, “Who are you talking to right now?”

You stop by a convenience store on your way to a house party. What are you buying?

Fuck a convenience store, I guess I’ll buy gum for myself. But you know what’s really appreciated and great? Bring a nice snack. Oh boy, people appreciate that. Bring a nice fucking watermelon salad. Or cheese and crackers. As I get older I’m fixated on bringing good food. It doesn’t have to be expensive necessarily, but have something good to eat if you want to be a good guest.

What’s your favorite movie or TV sex scene?

I don’t even feel comfortable saying it, because it’s so much stuff from my youth—and everyone’s so young in it now. If you could pin it to one particular scene, the most obvious one is Boogie Nights. It was a very sexy and very fantastic movie. It’s a masterpiece that retains its potency.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

I think Carrie Fisher. It’s very primal and probably problematic, but Carrie Fisher in a bikini as Jabba the Hutt’s slave. I think that awakened something in a lot of pre-pubescent boys. But it makes you think—she’s in a bikini, but she’s also in chains. [Laughs.]

You’re alone in bed: What are you thinking about?

Right now, every seven minutes I’m shocked anew at the fact that this moron is probably the most powerful man in the world. It continues to seem unreal. You like to think that there’s some order to the universe. Or if all else fails there’s the Illuminati, or there’s somebody pulling the levers. And then it’s like no, no.

What’s the most inappropriate thing a fan has said to you?

Nothing springs to mind in terms of wildly inappropriate. But my wife got [a letter] from this dude called the “Snowman” who’s in prison. He traced his hand in it, and it seemed kind of cool. That’s pretty genuine.

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done?

It wasn’t so much the way in which I did it, but my wife and I got married quickly. We got engaged and married quickly, and that in itself felt very romantic.

'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Premiere Recap: All the Savage Insults

The season two premiere of Big Little Lies had everything, including Meryl Streep. If you don’t have HBO or couldn’t watch tonight’s episode, here’s a quick, spoiler-free recap: The five Monterrey moms—Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Renata (Laura Dern), Jane (Shailene Woodley), and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz)—are all coping with the guilt of covering up Perry’s death, and they’re doing it in different ways. Renata’s staging photoshoots in ’80s power suits. Celeste is still seeing that slightly-judgmental therapist. Bonnie’s skulking around with her sunglasses on at all times. But their plans to keep what happened a secret are foiled by Perry’s mother, Mary Louise (Streep), who comes into town looking for answers. And my guess is she’ll find them.

That’s partially because she has one of the sharpest tongues of the bunch—which is saying something, seeing as how a big pull for Big Little Lies season one was the delicious one-liners and insults. Don’t worry, those don’t go anywhere in season two. In fact, I’d venture to say HBO has upped the amount of digs these characters give each other. I counted 18 savage lines in total. Eighteen! Just from one episode. What can I say? These Monterrey moms are great at being mean (and also…pretending like they didn’t kill anyone).

Below, check out all the one-liners from the season premiere that had me howling.

“I like to think of it as more of an assembly. A service is for when someone dies, like a school fundraiser.”Principal Warren to Madeline

“I’ll take one [cupcake] for each thigh! I don’t even like to chew. I just shove ’em down. Maybe you can give one here to Warren so he can shove it too.”Madeline giving it right back to Principal Warren

“My Amabella was bullied last year. I mean in, like, biting and choking. So we’re gonna make sure that doesn’t happen again!”Renata to the new teacher, Michael

“Unplugged is one thing but unhinged is a total other thing.”Madeline talking about Bonnie

“Did you see Renata getting up that new teacher’s ass? I thought she was gonna have to pull out her snorkel.”Madeline talking about Renata

“I can’t complain. Actually, I can. My son is dead.”Perry’s mother, Mary Louise

HBO

“You’re very short. I don’t mean it in a negative way. Maybe I do. I find little people to be untrustworthy.”Mary Louise to Madeline

At Long Last, 'Big Little Lies' Got Its Own Fashion Collection

It’s not surprising anymore when the release of a highly-anticipated television show is accompanied by some sort of limited-edition capsule collection inspired by it. Game of Thrones had Adidas sneakers and Urban Decay lipsticks; Riverdale had Keds shoes. And now, Big Little Lies is getting the same treatment—and of course, the incredibly chic capsule is worthy of the Monterey Five. (Truly, fandoms have never been so well-outfitted.)

HBO announced its partnering with The Wing, the members-only co-working space, on a collection inspired by the “circle of trust” between the women of Big Little Lies, featuring exclusively women-led fashion brands. It includes a Cuyana mini circle bag, an Outdoor Voices bra and legging set, and a pair of Lizzie Fortunato earrings—all in special colorways that draw from the show and its characters.

Everything is $150 or less, and part of the proceeds from each product will go to the National Network to End Domestic Violence.

You don’t have to be a member of The Wing to shop the collection: It’s live on the company’s e-commerce site. It’ll also be available for purchase at its SoHo and West Hollywood locations in New York and Los Angeles, respectively.

It’s easy to picture any of the Monterey Five wearing these pieces—Jane slinging the Cuyana bag across her body to head out with Ziggy, Renata putting on the Lizzie Fortunato earrings for a meeting, Bonnie teaching a yoga class in head-to-toe OV. (Madeline could totally be an OV type, too.)

Still, it’s an HBO-sanctioned way to dress like you’re in Big Little Lies, and another thing to obsess over before the show comes back on June 9. Consider your premiere watch party look sorted.

'Big Little Lies' Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Ask and you shall receive: After a swarm of messages from fans demanding it, HBO announced Big Little Lies is officially returning for a second season. It makes total sense why the network wants to continue this franchise. For one, people loved it: The season one finale brought in a whopping 1.9 million viewers, which is huge for premium cable. It was also a critical favorite, sweeping both the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Will lightning strike twice, though? Based on what HBO’s released about season two, it seems like yes. The brand has all the ingredients to make a phenomenal second season (including Meryl Streep).

Until then, here’s everything we know about Big Little Lies season two:

It will premiere in June 2019. Nicole Kidman revealed this December 31, 2018 on New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. “June, I think. We’re looking at June,” she said. “We’re still in the midst of editing it, but, um, thanks for asking ’cause we’re glad that people are excited about it.”

Most of the original cast is expected to return. HBO has only confirmed Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman at this point. However, the network said in a press release most of season one’s cast is expected to return, and negotiations are underway. All the original actresses are said to be receiving significant pay bumps, as well.

Alexander Skarsgård is back too. His character, Perry Wright, was murdered at the end of season one, but TV Line confirms he’ll still pop up around Monterrey, California—presumably in the form of flashbacks. Of course, Skarsgård did tell people.com, “I don’t even know if I’m really dead or not,” but he was most likely just teasing.

Season two will be just as dramatic (and violent) as the first. In its original release, HBO teased that “relationships will fray” and “loyalties will erode” in season two. Plus, “the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.” So that basically means someone’s going to get hurt.

There will be seven episodes. Just like season one.

David E. Kelley, the screenwriter who crafted season one, is returning. He’ll write all seven scripts for season two, based on a story ideated by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty.

Andrea Arnold will direct season two. She’s directed episodes for some of the best shows on TV, including Transparent and I Love Dick, along with some incredible indie films, like American Honey. She’s replacing Jean-Marc Vallée, who helmed all seven episodes in season one and is returning to season two as an executive producer.

Meryl Streep is joining the cast. Which is a huge deal. She’ll be playing Mary Louise Wright, the mother of deceased Perry, who comes to Monterrey concerned for her grandchildren.

She’s not the only new character, either. Casting is underway for Bonnie’s (Zoë Kravitz) parents, Elizabeth and Martin Howard. In addition, there will be a new employee at Otter Bay School who befriends Jane, and together they swap their “deepest secrets.” Finally, a new socially conscious teacher at Otter Bay, Michael Perkins, will cause drama when his lessons about global warning give Amabella panic attacks. (Can’t this girl live for five seconds?) The actors for the latter two characters haven’t been announced yet. Dennis O’Hare is also joining the cast as Ira Farber.

Padma Lakshmi Takes Glamour's 'Big Questions' Survey

If you don’t know Padma Lakshmi from her activism or for her award-winning cookbooks and memoir, chances are you definitely know her from Bravo’s reality cooking competition show Top Chef. The Indian born multi-hyphenate has been its host for 13 years now and sends aspiring chefs home with the famous catch phrase “pack your knives and go.” This season — the show’s 16th! — takes place in Kentucky where the 15 ambitious chef contestants will battle it out for the top prize. Ahead of its premiere tonight (December 6) at 9 p.m. Lakshmi answered Glamour‘s “Big Questions,” below.

What is your full name and where does it come from?

My name is Padma Lakshmi. Padma is Sanskrit word for Lotus. It is also the flower that blooms in stagnant water. And my last name is Lakshmi, which is normally a first name in India. In Hinduism, it is the Goddess of prosperity and abundance. It’s my mother’s middle name that I took because I wanted to have my mother’s last name.

What is your idea of true happiness?

Wow. I guess my idea of true happiness is when you feel content and productive and useful. And not that you need to have everything great happen to you every day, but that you feel like you are living with purpose in your life as a mother, in my profession, and in my romantic and platonic relationships as well. In my memoir, Love, Loss, and What We Ate I actually talk about this in the beginning. I used to ask my grandmother, who is a huge mentor to me, about happiness. And she would always say that happiness to her was not a noun, but a verb. And that if she felt like she got everything done that she needed to do then she went to bed happy. That she was content that she went to sleep more accomplished than she got up that day. I think my definition of happiness definitely aligns with that.

If you could come back as one person, real or fictional, who would it be?

I would come back as myself, but knowing everything I know now. My life took such a twisty and turny path that I didn’t have a lot of the knowledge that I needed to do things in a straight line so I wound up doing a lot of things the long way or the hard way. So I don’t really think I need to come back as anybody else, but I would love to retain the knowledge and the wisdom I’ve gained from this life into the next one.

What do you consider to be the greatest invention of all time?

Motherhood. My assistant would say coffee.

What do you think is the worst one?

Some days I think it’s the internet, but I know that it is also really good… I think high fructose corn syrup is probably the worst invention.

What is your most irrational fear and where does it come from?

My most irrational fear is sugar. I am always afraid of eating too many sweets because I’ve had a lot of cavities and I’ve had 8 root canals in my life…every time my dentist says he has to see me again I feel like I am being called to the principal’s office.

Would you rather be able to stop time or speed it up?

I think I’d rather stop time. I don’t want time to speed up…I have an eight year old and I’ve seen how much she’s been developed and grown from one year to the next. And I sound like every silly parent, but I look at her and I think why can’t you be three again? I also sorely miss people I have lost. I wish I had a little bit more time with my grandfather, who was also a big influence in my life. I wish I had more time with one of my lovers who passed away 7 years ago now.

How do you stand up for what you believe in?

You open your mouth and you have your convictions be bigger than your fears. I first found my voice when I started talking about endometriosis almost a decade ago. It was really hard to do that but I thought that any embarrassment I’d have talking about my body or my vagina was smaller than the issue of all of these millions of women suffering in silence and not getting a proper diagnosis. The needs of the next generation of young women superseded my own personal embarrassment of talking about my period or this icky disease. That was the first big leap in a journey that’s taken me now to immigration rights, and the U.N., and the ACLU and different things like that. Find something you’re really passionate about that you know is wrong in the world that you can set right. That will vanquish any fear you have of stepping in to speak about it where others won’t and maybe have not yet.

You’re stuck on a desert island and can only bring three things. What are they?

My daughter, a tooth brush, and survivalist Bear Grylls who was in that show called Man vs. Wild. I think that’s a good mix. A toothbrush, my kid (with lots of books in her book bag), and Bear Grylls.

Never Have I Ever ____ .

Never have I ever tried acid or LCD because I’m scared that my imagination is already overactive when I’m sober. Is that lame? I’d be like one of those kids you saw on the after-school specials. I am anxiety averse.

What advice would your 18-year-old self give to you now?

Try once in awhile to enjoy the success you’ve always wanted because sometimes when you get the success you always crave, you don’t have the time to enjoy it. You’re so busy maintaining the success or chasing the next thing. You really want to stop and say this is a moment where I’ve actually got a lot of things I didn’t have in my twenties and I am really thankful.

If you were on a dating app, hypothetically speaking what would your opening line be?

“High maintenance but definitely worth it.”

Maya Rudolph Takes Glamour's 'Big Questions' Survey

Since ending her seven-year stint on Saturday Night Live in 2007, alumna Maya Rudolph has managed to keep us laughing as Lillian in Bridesmaids and in cameos on Emmy-nominated TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, and Angie Tribeca. Now, Rudolph is starring in a show of her own on Amazon, titled Forever, alongside her former SNL castmate Fred Armisen. Without giving anything major away, the comedic pair play June and Oscar, a married couple, who deal with the trials and tribulations of lifelong commitment. Ahead of the show’s release on September 14, Rudolph answered “The Big Questions” for Glamour‘s October issue, below.

What is your full name, and where does it come from?

Maya Khabira Rudolph. My parents were hippie musicians. All my life my dad told me my middle name means She Who Received the Message.

What’s your idea of true happiness?

A warm, sleeping kid wrapped around me.

If you could be anyone, real or fictional, who would you be?

You’re talking to a professional drag queen, but I’d have to say Beyoncé.

What’s a headline you’d love to read about yourself?

“Oldest Living Person.”

Helen Green

“Never have I ever…”

Gone skydiving. I’ll never jump out of a plane voluntarily.

What’s something you wish you’d written?

“Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads.

If you were on a dating app, what would your opening line be?

“I love chopped salad and going to bed by 9:00 P.M. Wanna party?”

What chapter of your life would be most fascinating to read?

My SNL years. It seems like another lifetime to have been that driven, had that much adrenaline, slept that little, and been so productive.

You’re stuck on a desert island and can bring only three things. What are they?

There would have to be music. So Prince, Jon & Vinny’s pizza, and tequila.

You have to give up sex, booze, or laughter. Pick one.

Booze. So I guess I’m stuck with Prince and pizza.

This story appeared in Glamour’s October issue.
