10 Movies You Didn't Realize Were Based on Romance Novels


Romance is a billion-dollar industry. In 2016 these novels made up 23% of the overall fiction market, and they consistently out-perform all other genres. But while we’ve reclaimed the rom-com in film, these books are still often relegated to being “guilty pleasures” or considered “mommy porn.” This week we’re discussing these overlooked, often powerfully feminist books—that just so happen to have a happy ending.

Think back to some of the most romantic movies in recent memory. I’m sure a few titles come to mind: Me Before You, A Walk to Remember, Something Borrowed—the list goes on and on. And while these movies are different in terms of plot, they do have one commonality: They’re all actually based on romance novels. Yup: Before Shane West and Mandy Moore made you swoon in AWTR, their characters were just in the pages of Nicholas Sparks’ 2002 novel.

And there are more where these three came from. So many of your favorite rom-coms are actually based on these kind of books. The 10, below, are my personal favorites. Are they all traditional romance novels? No. But they all embody the core hallmarks of the genre: love, passion, and of course, sex.

Mandy Moore Is Working on a New TV Show Based on Her Life


Long before Mandy Moore was yanking at our heartstrings and racking up Emmy nominations as Rebecca Pearson on This Is Us, she was one of the biggest popstars of the early aughts. If her first single “Candy” hasn’t been stuck in your head for the past two decades, there’s a nostalgia-fueled new show coming to reacquaint us with Moore’s early career on the pop charts.

Audiences will get to relive an interpretation of Moore’s meteoric rise to fame with 90’s Popstar, a TV show coming to ABC. Deadline reports that the show, which has a pilot commitment, will follow a plot loosely based on Mandy Moore’s early stardom. In it, a Florida teen becomes a pop singer seemingly overnight—leaving her and her family to navigate a wild new reality.

The show’s teen singer is inspired by Moore, who signed a recording deal with Empire Records in 1999, when she was just 15 years old. You know the rest of Moore’s story: Her first album, So Real, went platinum, and she reached her first Billboard Top 30 Single with 2000’s “I Wanna Be With You.” Despite her connection to the forthcoming show’s source material, Moore reportedly won’t be playing any of the characters on the show. Instead, she’ll be behind the camera as an executive producer.

One look at the names joining Mandy Moore on 90’s Popstar, and you know this show is going to get emotional. The script is being written by Amanda Lasher, who’s hailed over TV successes including The Bold Type, Gossip Girl, and Riverdale. The rest of the behind-the-scenes team for 90’s Popstar includes This Is US showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who’ll join Moore as executive producers.

Casting announcements and an expected air date haven’t been shared for the pop stardom vehicle quite yet. But with Moore lending a hand, it’s safe to say her new show is going to be good. Until the new show airs, Moore will be busy with This Is Us. NBC announced in May that it ordered three more seasons of Moore’s popular drama.

Meghan Markle Says the Royal Tour Schedule Is Based on Archie's Feeding Times


Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have decided to bring five-month-old Archie to only one official engagement during their royal tour in southern Africa, but the little royal has apparently been at the center of all the planning.

During an interview during her events yesterday, the Duchess of Sussex was asked about her first work trip as a family of three. “We’re doing well,” she said, which you can see in the video below. “I think the schedule—they have been very kind to me, because everything is based around Archie’s feed times. So it’s a full plate, but we’re making it work. It’s worth it.”

She also revealed that she’s really missed her husband while he’s been on a solo leg of the tour. “It’s my first time being in [South Africa] … and Harry has continued on in a couple [of] other countries,” Markle said. “We are reuniting today, which I can’t wait for, I miss him so much!”

The duchess also spoke about the importance of seeing the work that so many are doing around one of her most important causes: the empowerment of women and girls.

“It’s been very important to me for a long time to focus on women’s and girls’ rights and especially their empowerment,” she said. “So to see this from afar and then to see the work that is being done on the ground, I think what’s really key is to focus on the work that needs to be done, but also how much incredible work is being done and to be able to be hear and support those people who are really actively working to champion the rights of women and girls.”

The Sussex family wraps up their tour later today and will fly back to London tonight. Next on the schedule: They’re currently taking on a British publication for what the royal family says was the illegal use of a letter Markle sent to her father after the royal wedding.

Lush Made a Bath Bomb Based on Ariana Grande's 'God Is a Woman' Music Video


Just one day after her new track “God Is A Woman” was released, Ariana Grande debuted its accompanying music video last week. Throughout the four-minute video—itself a testament to the power of female sexuality and a reminder that female divinity and sensuality go hand-in-hand—the newly engaged singer is seen basking in a pastel painted pool that kinda looks like the world’s most gorgeously extra bath bomb was released in it. Now Lush cosmetics—a company that makes customer-favorite bath bombs—has taken it to the next level: After a fan’s plea on Twitter, the company was inspired by the swirly pinks and purples in the “God Is A Woman” pool to create a bath bomb inspired by the video.

It all started with a fan begging for Lush to create one: “@lushcosmetics make a bath bomb that looks like this & call it god is a woman so i can bathe feeling like a goddess,” user @grandeslite tweeted on July 13.

The user also DM’d the tweet on over to Lush, which their account monitor, “Ali,” said they’d pass on to the company.

@grandeslite then screen-grabbed both her tweet and her DM and tweeted the two out in a single post on July 14—and it quickly went viral. Even Grande saw it, got on board, and responded to the tweet: “omg @lushcosmetics i’ll do anything.”

Ask and ye shall receive apparently, because a couple of days later (July 17), Lush product inventor Jack Constantine turned a wish into a reality. He gave fans a sneak peek of a Grande0-inspired bath bomb iteration on his Instagram account. He wrote, “I had a fun day working on a prototype for @arianagrande of a #godisawoman #bathbomb in the #lushlabstoday. Still needs work, version 2 tomorrow ??.”

The very next day he shared a video of the “leftovers” of the second prototype—and the result looks almost exactly like the galaxy-themed pool in the music video, with shades of light blue, lavender, and light pink swirling around in the sink.

On Friday, Constantine finished the final “God Is A Woman”-inspired bath bomb and sent it off to Ariana herself (so she can be the first to test it out, obviously). By the looks of it, the glitter-filled bath bomb would definitely turn your tub into an empowering, yet relaxing bathing experience.

We can’t wait to hear what Ariana thinks of it—and you can bet we’ll let you know if and when we can get out hands on some.
