Serena Williams Opened Up About Meghan Markle Supporting Her at Wimbledon

It’s been a busy few weeks of play at Wimbledon, and the women’s matches continued wrapping up on Saturday with the singles final. Ultimately, Serena Williams lost the match to Simona Halep of Romania 6-2, 6-2. There to support Williams through the tough rounds of play? None other than the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, one of her very good friends (reportedly, Williams helped organized her baby shower in New York).

Markle wasn’t watching alone, either: Both Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and Kate Middleton’s sister Pippa Middleton were there—the first time the three have been seen hanging out together at Wimbledon. (And looking chic doing it, of course.) Time flies, but it’s been a year since Wimbledon marked the first time Kate Middleton and Markle had hung out in public together.

After the match, Williams opened up about what having Markle in the stands meant to her as she was sweating it out on the court below. During a post-match press conference, she said that having the duchess’s support was “great.” “She’s such a great friend and a great person as well. And always positive, no matter what,” Williams said, according to People.

“It’s so good to have people like that, just to know,” Williams continued, and added that Markle is “such a fan of the sport.”

Williams and Halep both got a shoutout from the royals after the match, too:

“Well done to Serena Williams and Simona Halep on a fantastic match, and congratulations Simona on your first Wimbledon title!” Kensington Palace captioned an Instagram post featuring a gallery of the royals at the match. (Kate Middleton had taken some time to meet some junior players earlier in the day.)

It’s sweet that the two make time to be there for each other’s biggest moments—and have each other’s backs, win or lose. Watch the whole interview here:

Pippa Middleton Joined Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton at Wimbledon for the First Time

The early aughts had Paris, Nicole, and Lindsay. The mid-2000s brought Taylor Swift and her squad. Today at the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Final, we were introduced to another historic girl gang: Pippa Middleton, Kate Middleton, and Meghan Markle.

Pippa joined Markle and Kate in the royal box to watch Serena Williams, Markle’s close friend, compete (the champion ultimately lost to Simona Halep). The third member of their tennis party was unexpected: Buckingham Palace said on Friday that Markle and Kate would attend Wimbledon together, but the announcement didn’t hint that Pippa would also be there. It’s the first time that Pippa has joined the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge for a public outing.

From the looks of it, the trio had a low-key afternoon together. Pippa chatted with Markle and her sister throughout the match, and judging by the pictures, all three couldn’t stop smiling. Feud? We haven’t heard of her.

The outing also offered plenty of late-summer outfit ideas: Markle wore a crisp white button-down with a skirt from Hugo Boss; Kate opted for a Dolce & Gabbana dress; and Pippa Middleton reportedly wore a dress by Anna Mason.

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton Wore the Chicest Outfits to the Wimbledon Women's Final

One year after their first solo outing as sisters-in-law, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton attended their annual friend date at Wimbledon on Saturday, July 13. And just like last year’s tennis final, the two royals wore excellent outfits for the occasion.

Duchess Meghan and Duchess Kate joined the crowd of spectators at the Wimbledon Single Ladies’ Final at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London today, to watch Markle’s pal Serena Williams face off against Germany’s Angelique Kerber from the royal box. Middleton chose a green sheath dress with puff sleeves and gold buttons, and Markle wore a white button-down tucked into an accordion skirt.

While the duchesses watched the match, their fans tracked down the designers behind their outfits. Middleton’s dress was by Dolce & Gabbana, and although Markle’s top hasn’t been ID’d yet, her look includes a Hugo Boss skirt with navy brushstrokes. Her skirt retails for $375 and is still available online, but only in a few sizes.

Some Fans Think Serena Williams' 'Business Bun' Helped Her Win at Wimbledon

Serena Williams is continuing another epic run at Wimbledon. She’ll play in the semifinals on Thursday (July 11) against Barbora Strýcová in hopes of making her 32nd Grand Slam final. (She’s also still in the hunt for the mixed doubles titles with British star Andy Murray.)

As always, she’s shown off her incredible skill, fitness, and endurance on the court. But some fans think there’s another key to her powers: her hair. During her Tuesday (July 9) match against fellow American, Alison Riske, Williams initially wore her curls in what has become something of a signature look for her—a modified ponytail with a headband. After losing the second set and with the third tied at 3-3, she pulled her hair up into a tight bun.

Soon enough, Williams was once again dominating the match and ended up winning that set 6-3 and the match.

“Well, today [my hair] was just in my way, and the wind. I was missing a shot because it’s in my face,” Williams said of the hair switch. “I was like, ‘This is not happening.’ I just needed to get it out of the way, put the business bun up and just get to business.”

She also called it her “emergency exit.”

Listen, I’m just a fan, and I’ve fully convinced myself that whether my hair is up or down has an effect on the sporting event I’m watching—so I’m totally with the people online who credit the “business bun” with changing the tide of the match. Even Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, weighed in. “#MamaStrength. What an amazing match between two women who went all out today. But the #BusinessBun means business,” he wrote.

This is the second time Markle has attended Wimbledon since becoming a member of the royal family. Last year, she made an appearance with sister-in-law Kate Middleton, wearing a Ralph Lauren blue-and-white striped shirt and pants with an Altuzarra bag. Markle even attended the tournament in 2016, months before she and Prince Harry sparked dating rumors. That year’s Wimbledon, by the way, has an extra-special significance for Markle: It was around that time that she and Harry were first set up on their blind date.

The Hidden Meaning Behind Serena Williams's Wimbledon 2019 Outfit

Serena Williams opened her Wimbledon 2019 championships yesterday with a straight-set victory over Giulia Gatto-Monticone (and while Kate Middleton cheered from the stands). And, as usual, the tennis champion came dressed in an incredible custom look—and much like her French Open design, this one also carried a clever hidden message.

Keeping with Wimbledon rules and traditions, Williams’ sweater-knit Nike dress was all white. She made it her on, though, with very on-trend cutouts. But really, it’s all about the accessory that she added to the outfit: a gold brooch pin in the shape of the famous Nike swoosh.

It’s been nicknamed “the Broosh,” and according to a Nike release, it was inspired by “decorative jewelry from past generations.”

“I also wanted her to feel like it was something her grandmother could have worn, but of course give it a modern spin and make it just right for Serena,” Abby Swancutt, Global Design Director for NikeCourt, said.

The “Broosh” is made from 34 Swarovski crystals. That number is significant: Williams was 34 the last time she won Wimbledon, in 2016.
