A Clueless Remake Is Officially in the Works—and People Have Thoughts

Oh my God, we’re totally buggin’. News broke on Thursday, October 25, that a remake of the seminal ’90s movie Clueless is currently in development.

Now before you start screaming “AS IF!” at the top of your lungs, let’s think about this. Yes, Clueless is pretty much a perfect movie that should be revered and quoted for decades to come. But upon further reflection, it might be pretty cool to see how smart phones, social media, and other modern developments might affect these reimagined teens. Like, would Cher Horowitz (a virgin who can’t drive) even care about getting her license when she could just take an Uber or Lyft? What designer would get a shout-out a la Calvin Klein? My money’s on Alexander Wang. And might we finally have some same-sex couples in the crew?

The project is in its super early stages, though we do know that two powerhouse women writers are working on the script—Girls’ Trip‘s Tracy Oliver and Glow‘s Marquita Robinson. Obviously, they have a lot to live up to given their work will be compared to Amy Heckerling’s screenplay (which was loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma)—but it seems they’re more than up to the job.

Oliver, who is also writing the upcoming The First Wives’ Club remake, tweeted Thursday, “Crazy excited to be producing a new take on one of my favorite movies of all time, #Clueless, with the hilarious and super talented @MarqRobinson writing it!!! As. If.”

And Robinson basically acknowledged that the duo is low-key crazy for touching the cult classic. “Omg can you believe these idiots are remaking Clueless, @TracyYOliver?” she wrote.

Twitter takes immediately started flying around like balls to your nose in gym class. “If there is a film that really doesn’t need remake treatment it is Clueless,” one user wrote. Way harsh, Tai. But others were impressed by the pedigree of the writers.

Many noted that Paul Rudd, a man who doesn’t age, could just reprise his role as Josh.

Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that this movie is not a total Monet.

People Have a Lot of Thoughts About How 'The Conners' Killed Off Roseanne

The highly anticipated Roseanne spin-off, The Conners, premiered last night on ABC to huge numbers. According to Nielsen, 10.5 million people tuned in to see how the Conner family would carry on without their matriarch Roseanne, played by Roseanne Barr. The actress, who led last spring’s Roseanne reboot, found herself in hot water after she made racist comments about Valerie Jarrett, a former aide to the Obama administration. Her remarks caused ABC to cancel the reboot, and in its place is The Conners, which has all the elements that made Roseanne successful—just without Barr.

And naturally, how The Conners killed off Barr’s character is causing some serious chatter online. By the end of the pilot, we learn that Roseanne died from an opioid overdose. It’s a bleak way to send off a character, and especially poignant given the prevalence of opioid abuse in our culture. But Barr took to Twitter to express her disapproval in how the show finished off her character. “I AIN’T DEAD, BITCHES!!!!” she wrote.

Shortly after this, Barr released a statement on Facebook through her friend, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach. Here it is, in full:

While we wish the very best for the cast and production crew of The Conners, all of whom are deeply dedicated to their craft and were Roseanne’s cherished colleagues, we regret that ABC chose to cancel Roseanne by killing off the Roseanne Conner character. That it was done through an opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show.

This was a choice the network did not have to make. Roseanne was the only show on television that directly addressed the deep divisions threatening the very fabric of our society. Specifically, the show promoted the message that love and respect for one another’s personhood should transcend differences in background and ideological discord. The show brought together characters of different political persuasions and ethnic backgrounds in one, unified family, a rarity in modern American entertainment. Above all else, the show celebrated a strong, matriarchal woman in a leading role, something we need more of in our country.

Through humor and a universally relatable main character, the show represented a weekly teaching moment for our nation. Yet it is often following an inexcusable—but not unforgivable—mistake that we can discover the most important lesson of all: forgiveness. After repeated and heartfelt apologies, the network was unwilling to look past a regrettable mistake, thereby denying the twin American values of both repentance and forgiveness. In a hyper-partisan climate, people will sometimes make the mistake of speaking with words that do not truly reflect who they are. However, it is the power of forgiveness that defines our humanity.

Our society needs to heal on many levels. What better way for healing than a shared moment, once a week, where we could have all enjoyed a compelling storyline featuring a witty character—a woman—who America connected with, not in spite of her flaws, but because of them. The cancellation of Roseanne is an opportunity squandered due in equal parts to fear, hubris, and a refusal to forgive.

The Twitter reactions to Roseanne’s death are mixed. Some are outraged:

Others, however, are unbothered and even find the plot twist funny:

We’ll update this post if Barr says anything else. The Conners airs Tuesdays at 8:00 P.M. ET on ABC.

These Celebrities Have a Lot of Thoughts About the Supreme Court Shakeup

Yesterday, the already-frenzied news cycle amped up to a new level with Justice Anthony Kennedy’s announcement that he will be retiring from the Supreme Court. That means that President Donald Trump will now have the chance to nominate a second judge, after already placing Justice Neil Gorsuch on the highest court in the land not long after his inauguration.

Justice Kennedy is one of the conservative members of the court, but he has been a swing vote (siding with the liberals) on a number of key issues like abortion rights and gay marriage. His Trump-nominated replacement is expected to make the court much more conservative—and many are concerned about what that means for the future of Roe v. Wade and other cases.

Which is why some of Hollywood’s most famous, and outspoken, celebrities are taking to social media to make their opinions known and calling on their followers to take action.

Olivia Wilde, never one to shy away from speaking her mind, was very blunt in tweeting, “Let’s be clear: it is not a question of abortions or no abortions. It is only a question of whether women will die having them.”

Debra Messing posted an Instagram video—wearing a “Badass Feminist” shirt—pledging that she is ready to dig in and fight. “If Trump gets one of his nominees in we are looking at Roe v Wade being overturned,” she wrote. “Gay marriage overturned. It would be terrible for Union members, and everyone who needs affordable health care. Civil Rights as we know them will be chipped away. PLEASE commit to fighting this.”

Some, like comedian Billy Eichner, were just sad—while Cher was her usual fired up (and all caps) self.

Queer Eye‘s Jonathan Van Ness tweeted, “Omg can we do that cute unconstitutional thing again where we stall on nominees until the next election?” (He’s referring to the time Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to hold hearings on then-President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, in 2016 because it was an election year.)

Of course, there was a Handmaid’s Tale reference.

Kathy Griffin is depending on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Alyssa Milano and Chelsea Handler want people to keep hope—and also VOTE.

Wherever you stand on the issue, be prepared to see your social media feeds jammed with talk of SCOTUS and judicial nominees for the foreseeable future.

47 Crucial Thoughts I Have About Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon's 'Story of Us' Video

After three years of tumultuous drama on every iteration of The Bachelor franchise, Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon are finally dating. It took approximately 50 gallons of tears to get us to this point, but we’re here. And it feels…I don’t know…right?

Naturally, Iaconetti and Haibon celebrated the kickoff to their relationship in the most Bachelor way possible: with a 44-minute video explaining, in excruciating detail, the story behind their relationship. It’s the latest installment of Iaconetti’s video series called The Story of Us, and, well, it’s exactly what you’d expect.

Tears, emojis, the use of the phrase, “Can I borrow you for a sec?”—this video is everything Ashley and Jared shippers could want and more. If you want to watch it, check it out, below. If you don’t, these 47 thoughts I have about it sum everything up pretty well.

[embedded content]
  1. I honestly can’t with Jared’s facial hair in this interview.

  2. “Yeah, he’s cute” – Ashley’s reaction when she saw two episodes of Jared on The Bachelorette. That’s, like, the chillest thing she’s ever said about him.

  3. “It was truly love at first sight” – Ashley, on seeing Jared on Bachelor in Paradise. If I was on a free vacation, though, I’d fall in love with the first person I saw, too.

  4. “I remember seeing you get out of the limo and thinking you were hot.” – Jared, being a typical douche.

  5. Why didn’t Jared brush his hair for this interview?

  6. The way they’re talking about seeing each other for the first time legit sounds like animals mating in a forest.

  7. Alright, this whole bit of Jared talking about how he’s only been with “shy,” “soft-spoken,” and “feminine” women is cringe-y. “I’m not, like, very well-composed.” – Ashley. Girl, same.

  8. Drink every time Jared kisses Ashley’s hand.

  9. “We just rambled on.” – Jared, on the first 10 minutes of this video. Also the vibe of the other 34 minutes of this video. This is just…44 minutes…of them…talking about…themselves.

  1. Does Ashley attend Hanson concerts…every year? Does Hanson go on tour ever year?

11 Jared’s favorite superhero would be Superman.

  1. They’re talking about hickies now. OMG. They’re adults!

  2. Yup, of course Jared looked like a bum for his first romantic date with Ashley, and she dressed to the nines.

  3. Jared’s jaw could cut a pineapple.

  4. I need to see this alleged “Backstreet Boys” video Jared made for Ashley’s birthday.

  5. Honestly I’m starting to think Bachelor in Paradise was less about Ashley being “crazy” and more about Jared being a gaslighter!

  6. Oh, wow, now they’re getting deep and talking about “shame.” Go back to making jokes about Hanson, please!

  7. Oof, all this talk about anger and resentment. What Is. Happening?

  8. First tears, 23 minutes in!

  9. Oh wow, lots of tears. From both of them! Reality TV dramaaaaa.

  10. Jared still having residual tears while talking about Bachelor Winter Games is accidentally hysterical.

  11. They keep distinguishing between “real life” and their time on The Bachelor franchise, as if we all don’t know it’s heavily produced.

  12. They’re really deciphering their emoji usage right now. I need nine glasses of wine immediately.

  13. Jared, Bachelor Winter Games was a kick in the ass for all of us.

25 Annnnd more tears.

  1. I want to wear Ashley’s hoop earrings.

  2. “Tanner loves the theatrics of everything.” In other news, Tanner and I are twins.

  3. If Tanner is this couple’s fairy godfather, I want to be the fairy godmother.

  4. I still can’t get over the fact these people are real.

  5. Who knew the trainwreck that was Bachelor Winter Games would be the catalyst for this relationship?

  6. This video is 44 straight minutes of hot people problems.

  1. Jared actually said, “Can I borrow you for a sec?” before kissing Ashley and implying that he wanted to be with her. ABC’s impact!

  2. And Ashley was like, “K, thanks, but I’m still going to hang out with the dude from Bachelor Winter Games.” Queen.

  3. Of course, though, she dumped Winter Games guy for Jared Patchy Beard Haibon!

  4. Ashley just compared Jared to a volcano ready to burst. They’re so deep! We love metaphors.

  5. She’s crying over Jared’s white fluffy dog card. I feel seen.

  6. Ugh, Jared, we don’t need you to read the literal novel you wrote to Ashley to win her back.

  7. Jared, reading his letter: “I love watching football with you, even though the Giants suck!” Ashley: (Giggles). This is some heterosexual nonsense.

  8. This all, quite frankly, is some heterosexual nonsense.

  9. But I’m crying and love it so let me live.

  10. Oh my Gosh. Now they’re bragging about how cute their own love story is.

  11. Ashley: “So many people are like, ‘They live in their own little romantic comedy world,’ and it’s, like, but look.” Jared: “Yeah! Yeah we do. We’re pretty happy.” Ashley: “Chick flicks are real. They are! They’re adult fairytales, and they do come true.” I just…I just don’t even know what to say about this.

  12. Whatever, that’s a cute quote. But all I want to do now is sing “Miracles Happen” from The Princess Diaries.

  13. But, really, Jared. Shave the facial hair. Just shave it all. Cut the chord!

  14. Can’t wait for The Bachelorette now.

A Federal Judge Ruled That Donald Trump Can't Block Users on Twitter—and of Course Chrissy Teigen Has Thoughts

A federal judge in New York ruled Wednesday that Donald Trump is in violation of the Constitution when he blocks users on Twitter, as he so often does.

In making her ruling, Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald wrote that “no government official—including the President—is above the law, and all government officials are presumed to follow the law as has been declared.” She continued, “While we must recognize, and are sensitive to, the President’s personal First Amendment rights, he cannot exercise those rights in a way that infringes the corresponding First Amendment rights of those who have criticized him.”

In short, Buchwald holds that the “interactive space” where users can engage with the President’s tweets should be considered a public forum and blocking people based on their political viewpoints is a violation of their First Amendment rights.

At least one celebrity critic of Trump is looking forward to interacting with POTUS once more. Chrissy Teigen tweeted a video of herself watching news coverage of the decision with the caption, “Well well well we meet again @realdonaldtrump”.

Trump infamously blocked Teigen last July after a fairly innocuous tweet in which she said, “No one likes you.”

At the time she said, “It’s been a long time coming. I have been very anti-Trump since The Apprentice, like when it first started, so it didn’t start during the presidency like everyone thinks. This goes pretty deep.” But it’s not like she was all that bothered. “I don’t even follow him [on Twitter], so I’m definitely fine being blocked,” she continued. “There’s just this part of me that’s so happy that he had to actually do that. It’s just funny.”

The case that resulted in Wednesday’s ruling was brought to court by the Knight First Amendment Rights Institute of Columbia University on behalf of seven individuals who had been blocked by the @RealDonaldTrump account. “We’re pleased with the court’s decision, which reflects a careful application of core First Amendment principles to government censorship on a new communications platform,” Jameel Jaffer, the Knight Institute’s executive director, said in a statement on their site.

“The President’s practice of blocking critics on Twitter is pernicious and unconstitutional, and we hope this ruling will bring it to an end.”

It’s not clear at this moment when or how users once blocked will become unblocked. Will it be en masse? One at a time? Is there a prioritized list? We shall have to wait and see.
