The Bachelor Producers Are Casting a Dating Show for Seniors


The Bachelor, a show in which women over the age of 27 are considered “cougars,” has been accused of having an ageism problem before. Whether or not that’s true, I’d argue that age is one reason why so few final couples last. The show’s premise revolves around a man ostensibly looking for his future wife, and yet the Bachelor so often gives his final rose to a woman in a completely different life stage. (Looking at you, Peter.) The average Bachelor is 31, while the majority of female contestants are in their early to mid 20s. Those women are way more likely to be concerned with building a post-collegiate career and/or growing their Instagram following than settling down with some dude they’ve known six to eight weeks. Or just me?

So it’s surprising—encouraging, even?—that the long-running ABC dating franchise is casting for a new show entirely devoted to seniors looking for a “committed relationship.”

“Are you entering your golden years and looking for romance?” a casting notice on ABC.com reads. “The Producers of The Bachelor are looking for active and outgoing single men and women IN THEIR GOLDEN YEARS for a new exciting dating show!”

It continues, “If you are A SENIOR CITIZEN ready for a committed relationship apply today at: http://seniordatingshow.castingcrane.com.“

You’re reading that correctly: A Bachelor-like dating show for seniors is coming to ABC. Over on Twitter, a Bachelor producer confirmed that they’re only casting seniors 65 years old and up.

Details beyond that are slim, but Bachelor Nation is on board anyway. I’ve never seen so many all-caps hit Twitter before. “I CANNOT WAIT GBYE ALL OTHER BACHELOR FRANCHIZESS,” one Twitter fan wrote. “SENIOR CITIZEN BACHELOR GET ON MY TELEVISION!!!!!!!!!!” BachelorBob said.

Some speculated about potential plot lines, while others wondered how they could apply despite the age restriction. “What would the drama be?” one fan asked. “How many husbands someone has had? Who’s the worst bingo player?”

Best of all, though, were the Golden Girls references. You know Blanche would have been first in line to apply.

Obviously we’ll keep you posted as we learn more because this is one we can’t wait to watch.

'Love Is Blind' Didn't Show Us Every Couple Who Got Engaged


Love Is Blind, Netflix‘s latest foray into the world of reality programming, is the show that everyone’s talking about on your social media feeds—and with good reason.

If you haven’t yet watched, here’s the deal: 15 men and 15 women agreed to take part in a social experiment wherein they try to find a spouse without first seeing that person. In the early days of the show, the cast basically goes through rounds of speed dating where they sit in “pods” and get to know each other to find out if they’re possible soulmates, but they have no idea what they other person looks like. The men and women live in separate quarters where they often shared their feelings about who they were clicking with.

We get to see many of the Love Is Blind contestants get engaged within days of meeting each other—and at that point they are finally allowed to see each other and then jet off on a vacation in Mexico. Interestingly, though, viewers didn’t get to see all of the eight couples who got engaged.

“We only have so much time to tell a story, but there are lots of interesting stories. There’s the guy, Rory who features in a couple of scenes,” series creator Chris Coelen told Entertainment Weekly. “He actually got engaged to a woman who you only see for a brief moment early on named Danielle. They were together for a little while and then they broke up and she ended up dating the guy who appears at the very beginning of the show, Matt. I think they were all curious. One of the things I love about the show is, ultimately, when they go on their romantic getaway, they do get to see what the other ones look like and Jessica gets to see Barnett in the flesh for the first time and you get to see whether that matters and if maybe she made the wrong choice. I love that element of the show and I think that in real life, they were all really curious to know what the others looked like.”

The entire show is quite a wild ride, but it must also be crazy to go through the process and have your love story edited out for time. Danielle certainly thinks so, based on her Instagram.

Love Is Blind is now streaming on Netflix.

Riverdale's Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols Are Leaving the Show


At this point, Riverdale fans are used to the wild turns in the show’s plots. From demonic possessions to Archie’s turn in a prison fight club, the CW show is not afraid to get weird on the regular.

Now, another twist is coming by way of two season one cast members leaving the show at the end of the current fourth season. Skeet Ulrich, who plays Jughead’s dad F.P. Jones, and Marisol Nichols, who stars as Veronica’s mom Hermione Lodge, are both set to depart. In a statement to Deadline, Ulrich said, “I’m incredibly grateful for the friendships I’ve made on Riverdale, and I will miss seeing everyone on a daily basis. I’m proud to have been part of such a talented group of people, in front of the camera and behind. But I’ve decided that it’s time for me to move on to explore other creative opportunities.”

The actor also posted about his departure on Instagram. “I can’t even begin to thank you all for the unwavering support and love!! It is remarkable and deeply appreciated. I may be leaving Riverdale but my experience over the last four years will never leave my heart. A very special thanks to @writerras for giving me this opportunity ❤️”

“I had an incredible time bringing Hermione Lodge to life and working with my amazing cast, who became family,” Nichols said in a statement. “We had so many wonderful times together during the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We really do have the best fans ever. I am looking forward to the next chapter and am excited about the future.”

“Okay, it’s official,” she wrote on Twitter. “Best fans ever. Been reading all ur tweets. Tku for the love & support. We’re still filming Riverdale till April so still more to come, and then 1 month till #spiral #saw movie comes out! Beyond excited. Nothing but ❤️ for all of u.?”

While it’s not yet clear how the characters will be written off, Riverdale‘s creator made it clear this is just how things go on the show. “Part of life in Riverdale—and part of growing up—is saying goodbye to people,” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Deadline. “I’m grateful to Skeet and Marisol for their incredible work on the show these last four years, and we all wish them well on their future endeavors. FP and Hermione will never be far from our hearts. And, of course, they’re always welcome back in Riverdale.”

Riverdale has already been renewed for a fifth season.

90 Day Fiancé's History: How the TLC Reality Show Became a Cultural Phenomenon


Orstein: For that first season, we didn’t know who we were looking for outside of people who were engaging, had interesting backstories, were willing to be totally transparent and authentic. We looked at Russ and Pao very early and were intrigued by them. We felt they jumped off the screen and had a really interesting story to tell about how she was going to be acclimating to life in Oklahoma. That was so different from the life she knew in Colombia. They caught our attention from the get-go.

Paola Mayfield: For me, filming the show [coincided with] my first time in the U.S. When I arrived in the U.S. on my K-1 visa, I also hadn’t seen Russ in forever. So I arrived at the airport in the U.S. and all I knew was life in Colombia.

I felt like I would have time to get ready after I got off the plane, but when I landed Russ was there and the cameras were waiting. I thought, “Oh my gosh—I’m so nervous.” I felt like, “What am I supposed to do now?”

Adler: They had already invested time and money in their love. When we got those first cuts back, it was raw and authentic.

That first season, we almost wondered if it was too authentic. You’re watching these individuals who don’t know each other that well sitting in their living room talking to each other, trying to figure their life out. They’re not screaming and yelling; they’re not in some big, beautiful house. It was like, “Is this too real?”

But we just decided to lean into the real. Other networks wouldn’t have done that. Other networks would have said, “We need to brighten up this world. We need to make them look nicer, make their house look nicer, make them look more interesting.” The people we cast were going through something authentic. The stresses and triggers of the 90-day process—we thought, let’s sit back and watch it play out and not feel pressured to tell them to be louder or flashier. Let’s just work with who people really are.

Russ Mayfield: We had no idea what to expect when it came to filming. It got frustrating, because we wanted to be spending time together but there were always cameras around. I always wanted to do my best and look my best. So we just went with the flow. The amount of filming we did compared to what aired was frustrating—how much we worked, versus what was presented.

A Slow Start

Ornstein: I think we all had a feeling that we had something special from the early days, once we got into production and started looking at the material. It did very well that [first] season, but it wasn’t this instant smash hit. It grew.

Sharp: If you’re watching Twitter, you can see when America is watching a show. This didn’t start as a juggernaut. When we started production for season two, we were trying to think about how to tell different stories.

Adler: Season two brought the game-changing couple of Danielle and Mohamed.

[Mohamed Jbali, then 26, met Danielle Mullins, 41, in a chat room. He moved from Tunisia to Ohio to marry her, but viewers—and Mullins’ family—were skeptical of his intentions. Jbali, meanwhile, felt misled by her tenuous financial situation.]

When we sent their casting tape to Matt, I thought he was going to say this was a no-go. We were looking at them and thinking, “Huh—we haven’t told this story yet.” We try to document both sides. In that storyline, Mohamed very clearly felt he was misled by Danielle. Whatever people might believe about his original intentions, he continues to insist that he came to America thinking certain things about Danielle and her finances and her world. He has a certain point.

‘Love Is Blind,’ Netflix’s New Reality Show, Is Delightfully Unhinged


Netflix is expanding its reality-TV catalog with Love Is Blind, a delightfully unhinged dating show that’s pretty self-explanatory. It centers on a group of singles who go on a series of (literal) blind dates. As in, they’re placed in pods where they can’t see the person they’re chatting with. They can only hear them. From voice and connection alone, they whittle down their choices until they’ve found the One. Then they get engaged—yes, engaged—without ever laying eyes on the person.

Of course, eventually they do get to see what their fiancé looks like, and that’s where the real stories begin. How will these quote-unquote deep connections built in the pods translate to the physical world? Will they be attracted to their betrothed? Will their friends and family members approve? This is explored as the couples leave the pods, go on romantic getaways, and then head back to their real lives.

Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey—who hilariously recite the same monologue about how “love is blind” in every episode—Love Is Blind is unlike any show I’ve seen before. I finished the first five episodes feeling exhilarated, bewildered, and exhausted. I also had one zillion questions. Below, a nonexhaustive list:

1. Does the “blind date” concept work if all the contestants are conventionally hot? I’m not talking about individual attraction here—I’m referring to the narrow standards our culture has for “beauty.” Every single person on this show meets that criterion. While the show is racially diverse (to an extent), the men are muscular; the women are thin. Something tells me that was intentional. Think about it: If unconventionally attractive people went on this show and had their hearts broken after they saw their fiancé face-to-face, that would just be…awful. It would confirm the shallowness of mankind. Featuring only “hot” people guarantees that won’t happen. I’m not the only person who’s thinking this, either:

2. Jessica! What are you doing?! You will find yourself screaming at the TV many times during Love Is Blind—and Jessica, often, is the reason. The 34-year-old regional manager throws away a solid relationship with sweet, mature 24-year-old trainer Mark in favor of Barnett, a 27-year-old overgrown frat bro to whom all the women are inexplicably drawn. But when things go south with Barnett, Jessica goes back to Mark and proceeds to treat him like crap. Justice for Mark!

Demi Lovato Is Getting a Talk Show on Quibi


Everything is coming up Demi Lovato this year. The singer and actor, fresh off her triumphant moment at the Grammy Awards and her rousing rendition of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, is about to hit your screen with her very own TV show.

No, Lovato is not returning to her Disney days for a second part of Sonny with a Chance, but rather starring in a talk show on mobile video platform Quibi, according to Variety. Quibi features short-form, “snackable” content and has been partnering with everyone from Joe Jonas to Lena Waithe to Keke Palmer. Variety reports that the show is called Pillow Talk with Demi, though it seems the title may be changing. Lovato, who has always been outspoken about the things she’s passionate about, will reportedly chat about everything from sexuality to wellness in the short episodes, and consult both celebrity and expert guests. The show is meant to be an empowering, honest place for conversation and openness. (Consider this our official wish for a guest spot from Selena Gomez.)

“I’ve always considered myself someone that speaks honestly about issues that face my generation,” Lovato said in a statement per Variety. “We’re excited to bring those frank conversations to a public forum, where people can have the opportunity to relate to the topics and guests, while finding room for laughter and learning.”

No debut date has been set for Lovato’s show, though Vulture reports that the streaming service itself doesn’t debut until April 6. However, you can catch Lovato on TV elsewhere while you wait; her episodes of Will & Grace will air this year.
