The Princess Switch Sequel: Everything We Know So Far


Netflix revealed some exiting news on Tuesday, October 29: A sequel to The Princess Switch, 2018’s breakout holiday rom-com starring Vanessa Hudgens, is in the works. The movie is set to premiere on Netflix in 2020, and Hudgens will return as the star and also a producer.

“Vanessa Hudgens returns as star & producer for The Princess Switch: Switched Again,” a tweet from the Netflix account @SeeWhatsNext reads. “In the sequel, Duchess Margaret unexpectedly inherits the throne & hits a rough patch with Kevin so it’s up to Stacy to save the day before a new lookalike — party girl Fiona — foils their plans.” It already sounds incredible.

For those of you who forget The Princess Switch‘s original plot, it centers on an American baker, Stacy (Hudgens), who travels to the fictional country of Belgravia for a competition and discovers she bears a striking resemblance to one of its royals, Margaret Delacourt. The two women decide to switch places, and holiday-themed hijinks ensue. Ultimately, they both find love (Stacy with another royal, Prince Edward, and Margaret with Stacy’s friend, Kevin), and live happily ever after. But this new sequel implies there’s trouble in paradise.

In an interview with Glamour, Hudgens said that a sequel to The Princess Switch would probably include a third lookalike to create more drama. “Maybe there would a third twin,” she said. “Spruce things up a little bit. I have no idea. I’m going to leave that one up to the writers, but I know that I had so much fun doing it. The characters are so sweet that I would definitely be on board.

Here’s everything we know about the movie so far:

The release date. 2020. You can probably count on it dropping some time during the holiday season.

The director. Mike Rohl, who’s directed several TV show episodes for Shadowhunters and Supernatural, among others.

The screenwriters. Amanda Phillips Atkins, Eric Jarboe, and Robin Bernheim. All three served as producers on the original Princess Switch.

Ariana Grande Dropped a Sequel to 'Thank U, Next' in Honor of Her New Fragrance


When she’s not tearing up the stage on tour, creating new fashion trends, or making us laugh and cry alongside her on social media, Ariana Grande is busy releasing delicious fragrances. She’s got a handful of sweet scents to her name, including Sweet Like Candy, Ari, Moonlight, and Cloud, all named after significant songs, lyrics, or, well, herself. Now a new frag named — what else — Thank U, Next is joining the family, and Ariana pulled out all the stops to promote it: She released a commercial-length sequel to her wildly popular ’00s movie throwback music video for the song of the same name, and we can’t stop LOLing.

The video, which clocks in at a little over a minute, opens with the same Mean Girls-style “I heard …” clips of “students” in a high school setting. “I heard that Ariana has a new perfume,” says her friend Colleen Ballinger, who appeared in the original music video while pregnant and now has a baby strapped to her chest. (Aww!) “I heard she sings to her rose garden every day. They get a private concert,” says another faux-student. “Well, I heard she swam with actual mermaids in the Bermuda Triangle and convinced them to give her the velvety musk of their new sea god,” says yet another. (Musk is a key ingredient in the Thank U, Next fragrance, in case you hadn’t figured that out.) “Rumor has it, she put part of her ponytail in it,” is another LOL-worthy rumor included in the video. We have a feeling she didn’t actually put strands of her hair in the mix, though you do see her snipping off a bit of her iconic style, but you never know!

Ariana doesn’t stop at Mean Girls, either. The Bring It On references are alive and well in the Thank U, Next fragrance commercial, with the Clovers and Toros cheerleaders making appearances. “I heard how she went to space to find the best pears for her little fragrance,” says the Clovers head cheerleader. “She should have just come to Compton.”

“Are you sure it was pear? I heard it was coconut,” says Ariana-as-Torrance Shipman, making her first appearance in the video. She shows up again to throw a little tongue-in-cheek shade at herself, saying, “Honestly, I’m not the biggest Ariana Grande fan, but I do hear the new fragrance is … somewhat promising.” Even her beloved dog Toulouse pops in towards the end. Everyone’s on board for Thank U, Next, and so are we!

Ariana trademarked the phrase “Thank U, Next” back in April, leading fans to believe that “Thank U, Next”-inspired body and beauty products were on the way. They were right! Thank U Next the fragrance is a creamy, juicy blend of white pear, white raspberry, creme de coconut, pink rose petals, and velvet musk, and comes in a sweet-yet-saucy broken heart-shaped bottle. The fragrance retails for $42.00 for 1oz. exclusively at Ulta, who describes it as “Optimistically outspoken. Playful yet cool.” Just like Ariana herself.

The Kissing Booth Sequel Is Happening: Here's Everything We Know


Last year, Netflix blessed us all by bringing back the rom com. (Not that it was ever truly gone for us real stans, but at least they’re cool again.) The streaming service did this by premiering a slew of instant classics, including Set It Up, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. But there was one film in particular that kicked off this rom-com renaissance: The Kissing Booth, which became the most rewatched movie on all of Netflix for 2018, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For the uninitiated, The Kissing Booth is based on Beth Reekles’s YA novel of the same name. It follows Elle Evans (Joey King) and her BFF Lee (Joey Courtney) during their junior year of high school. These two do everything together—from Dance Dance Revolution, to stuffing themselves with cheeseburgers—but there’s one thing they can’t bond over: Elle’s secret, massive crush on Lee’s older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi).

And for those of you who couldn’t get enough of Elle, Lee, and Noah’s story, Netflix just announced a Valentine’s Day miracle: Production has started on a sequel for The Kissing Booth.

The director: Vince Marcello, who led the first film, is back onboard to direct the second.

The cast: Joey King, Joel Courtney, and Jacob Elordi are attached to star in the sequel. King had previously told TV Guide, “Right now, we’re not really sure. [The cast] would love for that to happen, but everything is still up in the air. We’re still waiting on [Netflix],” so it doesn’t come as that much of a surprise they signed on for the second film.

The plot: Details for the plot are still under warps, but King shared her dream premise for the sequel. “If there was a sequel, my prediction would be hopefully Elle and Noah stay together,” she told Seventeen. “Elle goes to visit Noah at college. Of course, there has to be some crazy things that get out of hand, but I don’t know. I really hope that a lot of the original characters, if there was a sequel, like the OMG Girls and Tuppen and all those amazing characters would definitely be in it.”

As for the fate of Elle and Noah’s relationship, King said, “Of course, I think everyone, including myself, wants to see Elle and Noah stay together. I feel like Elle and Noah should stay together and get into the theme park business together and be a power couple who builds theme parks.”

Everything We Know About the 'Crazy Rich Asians' Sequel


Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Crazy Rich Asians became the highest-grossing rom-com in a decade, making $35.3 million in its first five days in theaters—not to mention, the first movie in 25 years with a majority-Asian American cast. It was such a success, in fact, that a sequel was announced soon after the film came out. Here’s what we know for sure: It’ll be based on the second book in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians series, China Rich Girlfriend. Now, it’s being reported that there might be even more to look forward to.

According to Deadline, producer Nina Jacobson teased a third movie, based on Kwan’s third book in the franchise, Rich People Problems)—and that it could be filmed back-to-back with the Crazy Rich Asians sequel. If you’re hungry for the details (and we definitely are) read on for everything we know about the upcoming movies. Right now, little has been confirmed, but we’ll continue to update this story as details emerge. Let’s dive in, shall we?

China Rich Girlfriend

What: The second book in Kwan’s series focuses on Rachel (who’s now married to Nick!) and her back-in-the-picture father, as well as his son and his son’s fiancée, Colette. Expect scandals(!), affairs(!), and secret investments(!). How much the movie will stick with the original plot, who can say—but director John Chu told The Hollywood Reporter that there’s potential romance for Astrid, as she rekindles things with Charlie, as well as more of Kitty, too. Last time, the script was reportedly changed to make the female characters even stronger, so hopefully we can look forward to more of the same.

Who: Chu is reportedly signed on to direct again for Warner Bros., with Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli believed to be working on the script. According to early reports, key producers will also return.

When: The sequel reportedly won’t even start filming until 2020. According to Deadline, though, the second and third installment of the franchise are expected to film back to back, so maybe we’ll see those hit theaters soon after each other.

Rich People Problems

What: We don’t know much about this project yet, beyond the fact that Warner Bros. reportedly owns the rights to the title and has a “plan with Kevin for the next two films,” per Vanity Fair

Who: TBD. However, the main cast from Crazy Rich Asians reportedly has options in place. Fingers crossed all of your favorites will be back.

When: TBD, but 2020 or later.

Margaret Atwood Is Writing a Sequel to 'The Handmaid's Tale'


It’s been more than 30 years since Canadian author Margaret Atwood published her revolutionary sci-fi novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Since its release, the book has become a symbol of female resistance, thanks in part to its wildly popular Hulu adaptation—and now Atwood has revealed that she’s going to take the story further by writing a sequel called The Testaments.

In a press release, Atwood shared that The Testaments will be out in September 2019. It will pick up 15 years after the final scene in the original book and will be told from the perspective of three women. Like the television series, The Handmaid’s Tale novel is set in Gilead, a dystopian world in which fertile women (called handmaids) are forced to bear children for wealthier families. Both the show and the book follow Offred, a handmaid who is assigned to a rich couple, and her story in the novel ends ambiguously. Atwood’s sequel could finally offer a glimpse into what became of the character.

“Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything!” Atwood writes in the release. “The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.”

Atwood has previously shared that she wrote The Handmaid’s Tale while living in West Berlin and that she drew inspiration from examples of women’s struggles throughout history.

“It may look like only a year, but the real answer is 4,000 years because that’s how much of women’s history I was drawing on,” she said in a speech last year.

Although the Hulu adaptation has boosted The Handmaid’s Tale popularity, Atwood’s publisher has said the show will not be connected to the new book. Still, the series starring Elisabeth Moss has brought the world of Gilead to new audiences and has inspired women amid the #MeToo era and the Trump administration. Many women have taken to wearing the red robes from the series during reproductive rights demonstrations, and some even wore the costume to protest the confirmation of controversial Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Everything We Know About the *To All the Boys I've Loved Before* Sequel


Peter Kavinsky lovers, rejoice: Netflix is officially making a sequel to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. To All the Boys is based on a novel trilogy by Jenny Han, after all, and the success of the first movie almost guaranteed a second one would happen.

The news is now officially official, though, thanks to a line in a story from The Hollywood Reporter about Paramount and Netflix inking a partnership deal. One of their first joint ventures, according to THR, will be the sequel to TATBILB.

But here’s the question: What’s going to happen in this second film? The first movie took creative liberties and tied everything up in a neat bow, presumably in case a second one wasn’t in the cards. By the end of the movie, Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) are happily together, but that doesn’t happen in the books. Rather, Lara writes Peter a letter that’s delivered in the second novel, P.S.: I Still Love You. It’s after this that Lara and Peter share a steamy hot tub kiss on their school’s ski trip that goes viral—but, as you know, this all happened in the first movie. So where will things pick up for chapter two?

That’s still a mystery, but here’s what we know about the sequel so far:

The title: If Netflix stays true to the books, it will be called P.S.: I Still Love You.

The director: Susan Johnson, who helmed the first one, will presumably lead the ship for the second installment because she posted about it on Instagram.

The cast: No one has been confirmed yet, but Centineo told Variety that “every single person involved in the making of [the first] film wants a sequel.” So expect to see some familiar faces.

The plot: According to HuffPost, Johnson told Entertainment Tonight the sequel would likely follow what happens in the novel version of P.S. I Still Love You (minus those creative liberties, of course).
