Coming to Netflix in September 2018: 99 Movies and TV Shows to Start Streaming Next Month


Fall is coming, and you know what that means: Pumpkin Spice Lattes, sweaters, and…a whole bunch of new movies and TV shows to watch on Netflix. The streaming service is adding 99 new titles to its queue in September, which means you’ll have options for days and days. Leaving Netflix in September 2018: 35 Movies and TV Shows Falling Out of Your Queues


Attention world: 13 Going on 30 is leaving Netflix next month. No, this isn’t a joke: For unknown, tragic reasons, the beloved rom-com starring Jennifer Garner (in which she plays a 13-year-old trapped in a 30-year-old’s body, and shenanigans ensue) is leaving the streaming platform at the beginning of September. No longer will you be able to watch Garner and Mark Ruffalo dance to “Thriller” whenever you want. I hate that this is the world we live in now, but here we are.

Other titles leaving Netflix in September include Forgetting Sarah Marshall (sad), Just Friends (very sad), and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (eh—I think we can live without this one). Watch these 35 movies and TV shows, below, now while you can.

Black Women Featured on 2018 September Issue Covers


Wearing a giant floral headdress perched atop her head, Beyoncé Knowles did something remarkable with her September 2018 Vogue cover and the words she said inside the magazine. In addition to choosing to be photographed by the first African-American to shoot a Vogue cover in 126 years (!), the entertainer and entrepreneur dispelled a fable that had long dogged the fashion industry as some absolute truth: Put a black woman on the cover of a fashion magazine and the issue will languish at newsstands, especially when it’s the all-important September issue.

“When I first started, 21 years ago, I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because Black people did not sell,” Beyoncé wrote. “Clearly that has been proven a myth. Not only is an African-American on the cover of the most important month for Vogue, this is the first ever Vogue cover shot by an African-American photographer.”

Other comments she made inside the magazine went viral for the right reasons—her thoughts on body image, childbirth, and a relatable public acknowledgment of her FUPA—but it was the above message about representation that was the most relevant, given the unprecedented number of other September 2018 issues that also feature black women.

There was, of course, Rihanna’s British Vogue cover, which made headlines last week for those pencil-thin Marlene Dietrich-inspired eyebrows, yes, but also for the fact that the singer was, somehow, the first-ever black woman to cover the magazine’s September issue.

And like a domino effect, more followed: Zendaya for Marie Claire, Lupita Nyong’o for Porter, Tracee Ellis Ross for ELLE Canada, models Slick Woods for ELLE UK and Adowah Aboah and Naomi Campbell for LOVE, Issa Rae for Ebony, Oprah Winfrey for her own publication O, Aja Naomi King for Shape, and of course Tiffany Haddish swanning across Glamour’s own September cover.

The succession of black female cover stars swiftly prompted an influx of social media joy, with a grid of each magazine circulating voraciously across Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Situated side-by-side, these stars’ influence was on display, showcasing something more than obvious beauty and undeniable cool: marketability . Each cover felt like a lodestar for an industry that has an uncomfortably long track record of being inspired by trends black women start, but rarely get credit for.

Still, inclusive covers alone don’t move magazine sales along—readers do. And according to a Nielsen 2017 study, black females are among media’s most voracious, savvy, and loyal consumers, and remain dedicated fans to physical magazines, even in a fast-changing media landscape. Nielsen estimates that black female consumer preference could help “drive total Black spending power toward a record $1.5 trillion by 2021”, shifting us into superpowers and cultural arbiters, which could be why the publishing world has finally focused its lens on the faces and stories of black influencers.

And while this shift in power and visibility is exciting, it also comes at a time when black female identity is at its most vulnerable. The unconscionable death of Nia Wilson last month and the glaring pay inequity black women face seem to suggest that as we continue to push culture along, we still remain uninsured by society at large. It’s hard not to wonder what it means then to tout black women as ideals of luxury, influence, and beauty, but not carve out enough avenues to protect us from gross violence and poverty.

Which is why the media—from cover stars to mastheads to creatives who concept and produce content—becomes a significant tool to bring these unsettling and pervasive inequities to the forefront.

For all the strides we’ve made in diversifying newsrooms and narratives, fashion still has some work to do as far as telling black stories and spotlighting women of color. But we’re getting there: in August 2017, Fashionista reported that only three U.S. titles featured women of color on their September covers. This year, we’re at 11 (at press time), meaning that number has almost quadrupled.

Beyoncé really said it best in Vogue: “If people in powerful positions continue to hire and cast only people who look like them, sound like them, come from the same neighborhoods they grew up in, they will never have a greater understanding of experiences different from their own. They will hire the same models, curate the same art, cast the same actors over and over again, and we will all lose.”

An Astrologer Explains What Being Born on September 16 Means


Were you born on September 16? If so, you’re in excellent company, my Virgonian friends, because according to Harvard’s Amitabh Chandra, yours is the most popular birthday in the good ol’ U.S. of A. It’s fun to be popular!

Astrology is not just your horoscope. It actually involves lots of math, and your horoscope is the result of your astrologer applying that math to human experience. For every degree of all twelve signs of the zodiac, there exists a Sabian Symbol. These visual representations were originally channeled by a clairvoyant woman (and fellow Virgo!) named Elsie Wheeler, back in 1925.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Will Reportedly Make Their Official Debut as a Couple in September


There’s been a very exciting development in today’s royals news: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, that couple-that-isn’t-official-but-everyone-knows-they-are we all have in our social circle, are going to be making their first joint appearance together. Finally.

The Daily Mail reports that the ginger prince and Suits star will step out for the first time together at the Invictus Games in Toronto on September 23. (The palace has not yet confirmed this.) That fair Canadian metropolis also happens to be where Suits is filmed, meaning their first time being Publicly Official will be in her adopted home. So cute.

It’s also a big deal because the Invictus Games, an international athletic competition for soldiers and veterans, is a cause close to Harry’s heart. (Another cause he’s passionate about? The mental-health foundation, Heads Together, he leads with Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, AKA Kate Middleton. He is too good for this world.)

We know that their love is pretty much on fire right now: she flew to London to be with him for his birthday in August, and last week, she opened up by telling the world that “we’re in love.”

According to the Daily Mail, the two aren’t doing their romance transatlantically, however: “She and Harry currently stay in Nottingham Cottage, a small two-bedroom house in the palace grounds.” Cosy Cozy! However, she (likely) hasn’t met the Queen yet: protocol dictates you don’t usually do that until the ring’s on the finger.

However, according to the same newspaper of record, the Palace is also working to get Markle’s Suits publicity commitments toned down a bit, “an apparent clearing of the decks and part of what some are calling ‘Operation Princess.”

If this means what it is easily read to mean—indeed, says the Mail, the two are “as good as engaged”—well, 2018 is looking up.

Coming to Netflix in September 2017: 100 Movies and TV Shows You Can Start Streaming This Month


If you’re a ’90s baby (and, honestly, even if you are not), the chances are high you saw Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast in theaters multiple times. And we don’t blame you: The film, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, is exquisite in every way possible. Still, those frequent trips to the cinema probably broke your bank—movie tickets are ridiculously expensive these days!

But don’t worry: There’s now a way for you to watch Beauty and the Beast on repeat for days and still have the comfort of you couch and delivery pizza whenever you want because the film is officially hitting Netflix this month—September 19, to be exact. So go ahead and plan your viewing parties accordingly.

That’s not the only Disney treasure available for streaming next month. Both Mulan and Hercules will arrive on Netflix September 1, and Pocahontas is coming September 14. (Just as a reminder: Every Disney movie is leaving Netflix in 2019, so enjoy them now while you can.)

If you’re not a Disney person, though, no worries: A slew of other, more grown-up titles are headed to your queues in September as well. The Forgotten! Carol! All the Jaws movies! Who needs sunlight anyway?
