Chrissy Teigen Had a Lot to Say About Ivanka Trump’s Reaction to Family Separations


Ivanka Trump has caught a lot of flak for refusing to speak out about controversial issues like family separation, despite positioning herself as a champion for women and children. On Wednesday night at the House Democrats’ annual retreat, Chrissy Teigen become the latest celebrity to put the First Daughter on blast, noting that Trump continued posting photos of her kids on social media while immigrant children were being removed from their parents as a result of her father’s policies.

Alongside her husband, John Legend, Teigen spoke with former MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry and explained that the images of children separated from their parents because of the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance policy at the border deeply affected her. “It’s a painful thing to see that, and it’s a painful thing to see such a complete lack of empathy,” she said.

Teigen then pointed out that Ivanka Trump had published images of her son on Instagram when the family separation crisis was at its peak. The photos were criticized as tone-deaf for appearing at a time when thousands of immigrants were trying desperately to reunite with their own children.

“When it comes from people, like Ivanka, I will say, that can post all day pictures of her children that are just in her home and ‘Oh, my daughter is having trouble in her crib’ or ‘My daughter is doing this’ and ‘My daughter is doing this,’ there are children out there that don’t have that opportunity,” Teigen said.

Last August Trump finally spoke up and called the family separations a “low point.”

“I feel very strongly about that. And I am very vehemently against family separation and the separation of parents and children,” Trump said at an event with the news site Axios. However, many people on social media wondered why she hadn’t been more vocal when the crisis was unfolding.

Since Donald Trump was elected, Teigen has been a forceful critic of his on Twitter. At Wednesday’s event, Legend joked that his wife “was ahead of the curve on making fun of Donald Trump.” Still, Teigen did leave the audience with one word of advice not for politicians, but for women: Harris-Perry asked her what word she hoped women would use more frequently and Teigen blurted out, “Fuck you.” The crowd broke into laughter, and Teigen quickly added, “You don’t have to say it…. It is not a word; it’s not a sentence. It’s a mind-set.”

Samantha Bee Regrets Calling Ivanka Trump the C-word Because It Took Attention Away From Family Separations


Full Frontal host Samantha Bee is revisiting the controversy she ignited last May when she called Ivanka Trump a “feckless cunt” over her lack of response to President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, which separated migrant children from their parents.

In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Bee now explains that she has some regrets abut how the moment unfolded—primarily because the comment diverted attention from the subject of those family separations.

“I was very regretful that that moment really took away from what I was trying to say with the segment. And the segment really effectively disappeared, you can’t find it anymore. That’s really a shame, because the subject matter was really important to me,” she said, adding later, “I felt like it did a disservice to the [separated] families. Not that we would expect to have a huge impact on them, but I felt that anything that took away from that story, which is so critical and an ongoing story that continues on to this moment, I felt terrible.”

In the segment, Bee noted Trump’s silence around the border crisis, showing an Instagram photo the First Daughter posted with her son—something many people criticized as being tone-deaf. (Trump often touts her commitment to women and children as part of her role in White House.) Bee then looked into the camera and addressed Trump directly: “Let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless cunt. He listens to you!”

The use of the C-word drew intense backlash, with some insisting that Bee had gone too far. But Bee also sparked a discussion about the implications of the word and the complicity of Trump, who serves as an advisor in the President’s administration. Later, Donald Trump even got involved, shooting off a tweet in which he wondered why Bee hadn’t lost her job. “Why aren’t they firing no talent Samantha Bee for the horrible language used on her low ratings show? A total double standard but that’s O.K., we are Winning, and will be doing so for a long time to come!” he wrote.

Bee, who eventually issued an apology to Ivanka Trump, described the entire experience as “unpleasant,” particularly the moment in which she was singled out by the President. “It definitely unleashes a different kind of beast into your life when the President specifically tweets about you, so that was a bit new. As a person, it’s helpful for me to keep the show small in my brain,” she said.

Still, Bee is moving past it. She’s taking a break as she prepares for a new season of her show, which is going to get an updated look with a new set. “I think we’re ready to take up more space in the world and so why not have a set that reflects that,” she said.

Ivanka Trump Calls Family Separations A 'Low Point,' but Twitter Wonders Why She Didn't Speak up Sooner


Despite positioning herself as a champion for women’s rights, Ivanka Trump has repeatedly drawn criticism for refusing to speak out against some of her father’s most controversial viewpoints. (Remember SNL’s “Complicit” perfume ad?)

Most recently, critics noted how conspicuously quiet she’d been on the topic of the family separations that resulted from the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance immigration policy. But on Thursday, she broke her silence and said the issue was “a low point” for her.

During an event with the news site Axios, Trump, who is also an advisor to the White House, shared her thoughts on separations at the border, which have splintered nearly 2,700 parents and children. An interviewer remarked that some administration officials have come to regard the policy as a “low point.”

“That was a low point for me as well,” she said. “I feel very strongly about that. And I am very vehemently against family separation and the separation of parents and children.”

She went on to describe illegal immigration as an “incredibly complex” topic, but didn’t offer further insight or potential approaches the administration could take. “These are not easy issues; these are incredibly difficult issues,” she said. “And like the rest of the country, I experience them in a very emotional way.”

Trump has been tight-lipped on immigration in the past. In 2017, after the president announced he would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, she again described the issue as “complicated” and called on Congress to act.

On social media, many people wondered why Trump has waited so long to to share her views about family separations, especially since she held opposing beliefs. According to some reports, Trump had donated $50,000 to a church helping to care for migrant children, but she never used her position to publicly denounce the policy while children were still being forcibly removed from their parents. She was even slammed at one point for posting what some called a “tone-deaf” photo holding her son amid the crisis.

In the same interview, someone also asked Trump if she believed the media was “the enemy of the people,” as her father has suggested in the past. She seemed to split from her dad yet again, claiming she does not share that opinion.

“I’ve certainly received my fair share of reporting on me personally that I know not to be fully accurate, so I have some sensitivity around why people have concerns and gripe, especially when they’re sort of targeted,” Ms. Trump said. “But no, I do not feel that the media is the enemy of the people.”

A few hours later, her father chimed in on the interview with a tweet that read, “They asked my daughter Ivanka whether or not the media is the enemy of the people. She correctly said no. It is the FAKE NEWS, which is a large percentage of the media, that is the enemy of the people!”

Melania Trump Reportedly Planned to Visit Migrant Children in Texas Before the President Ended Separations


On Thursday, first lady Melania Trump traveled to Texas as part of an unannounced visit to Upbring New Hope Children’s Shelter. There, she reportedly planned to meet with several children who have been separated from their parents at the border.

“I’m glad I’m here and I’m looking forward to seeing the children,” Trump said while seated at a table surrounded by the center’s staff, ABC reported. “But first of all, let me begin to recognize each of you and thank you for all that you do, for your heroic work that you do every day and what you do for those children. We all know they’re here without their families, and I want to thank you for your hard work.”

The facility Trump visited is currently housing an estimated 60 children ranging in age from five to 17, according to a White House pool report. The children are all from Honduras and El Salvador.

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s communications director, told reporters that Trump asked her staff to plan the visit on Tuesday, just prior to her husband’s decision to sign an executive order ending the family separations.

“This was 100 percent her idea. She absolutely wanted to come,” Grisham said. Even after her husband signed the order, Grisham said the first lady still believed it was important to travel to Texas. “She wants to see what’s happening for herself and she wants to lend her support, executive order or not. The executive order certainly is helping pave the way a little bit, but there’s still a lot to be done.”

U.S. first lady Melania Trump toured the facility after a roundtable discussion with doctors and social workers at the Upbring New Hope Children’s Center.

The first lady, along with Trump’s daughter and advisor Ivanka Trump, were both said to be instrumental in the president’s decision to sign the executive order.

“Ivanka feels very strongly. My wife feels very strongly about it. I feel very strongly about it,” the president said while he signed the executive order Wednesday, according to ABC. “I think anybody with a heart would feel very strongly about it. We don’t like to see families separated. At the same time, we don’t want people coming into our country illegally. This takes care of the problem.”

Following the signing of the executive order, Ivanka shared her thoughts on social media writing, “Thank you @POTUS for taking critical action ending family separation at our border. Congress must now act and find a lasting solution that is consistent with our shared values; the same values that so many come here seeking as they endeavor to create a better life for their families.”

In a follow-up message sent on Thursday, Ivanka further tweeted, “Now that an EO has been signed ending family separation at the border, it is time to focus on swiftly and safely reuniting the families that have been separated.”

Mrs. Trump isn’t the only first lady to speak out about the separation of families. As ABC noted, all five living former first ladies have publicly condemned the separations. In an op-ed for The Washington Post, former first lady Laura Bush called the separations both “cruel” and “immoral.” Bush added, “Our government should not be in the business of warehousing children in converted box stores or making plans to place them in tent cities in the desert outside of El Paso.”
