Passport Vintage Is Fashion People's Best-Kept Secret for Vintage Denim

Can you imagine a time where you didn’t obsess over owning that perfect pair of vintage jeans? Long before we were reconsidering fanny packs, bike shorts, or even “dad” sneakers, finding that perfect pre-loved, high-waisted denim was a top shopping priority for fashion and vintage enthusiasts alike. Though you would think that it would be easier to track down secondhand jeans in the age of two-day shipping, those true gems—the ones that fit just right at the waist, butt, and thighs, with no awkward pouches in sight—remain elusive. Unless, of course, you know exactly where to shop.

It’s an open secret that some of the most stylish people you know turn to Instagram to find those extra-special fashion items everyone asks about. Same goes for vintage denim. There’s one account in particular that’s become a destination for the fashion flock: Passport Vintage, an Etsy shop that was once a part-time side-hustle and is now a proper brick-and-mortar store in Austin, Texas (with its own shoe line!). Since its inception in 2014, Passport Vintage has sold 4,300 pairs of jeans online (its in-store count: 4,200), according to co-founder Maria Oliveira.

“For the first two years, [we] were online-only, running the business out of our apartment in Humboldt Park [in Chicago],” Oliveira says. “We moved to Austin because we felt it was a better environment to grow the business. After three months, we opened our brick-and-mortar—that’s what sparked the evolution of our customer.”

So, what’s Passport Vintage’s secret? As with any second hand store, there’s exclusivity and consistency—but it’s also the edit: Passport Vintage does a lot of the heavy lifting for you, sifting through loads of vintage to identify those truly special (and Instagrammable) denim pieces worth the online bid war for. (Plus, Oliviera says the boutique curates its collection to match current fashion trends.) It also makes sure to provide as much information as possible—measurements, fabric make-up, and so on—so that online shoppers feel more at ease (and have more success) thrifting online.

Though the experience of shopping vintage online versus in-store is markedly different, Oliviera notes that the most sought-after brand is the same for both: “We sell vintage Levi’s over any other brand,” she says. “It’s what people come to our shop for. We still carry a variety of other vintage denim brands because there are so many amazing vintage pieces that we cannot pass up, but our focus is definitely on Levi’s.”

So, if you’re on your own hunt to scoring the perfect pair of vintage Levi’s—or any other type of thrifted denim—Oliveira has shared four key tips for acing the online vintage hunt.

Selena Gomez Got Matching Tattoos With Her Squad—and They Have a Secret Meaning

Selena Gomez, as famous as she is—140.7 million followers on the ‘gram alone—still makes time to stay close to her best friends from her pre-fame days. In July, Gomez spent her 26th birthday eating pasta on a yacht with her squad (actual goals)—and when it came time for another squad member to hit the big 2-6, she cleared her schedule for those celebrations, too, making time for a little vacay to hang out with them.

On Saturday, Gomez ‘grammed some photos of her friend’s birthday weekend, which kicked off Friday night—and it looked pretty epic. Pasta made a repeat appearance, with pizza and ice cream hijinks also surfacing.

“My best friend turned 26. Part one,” she captioned the first gallery.

Gomez’s friend Courtney Barry also posted about the evening: “chill family dinner turned wild (I cannot believe we convinced @raquellestevens to get a spontaneous tattoo)”

There was a pizza shot from her too:

And it was followed by this cute shot of her and Gomez showing off their new ink, which happens to be a number four: “we finally did it! my number one and my sister forever @selenagomez ❤️”

Gomez also posted it to her ‘gram with a heartfelt caption: “And lastly, my actual #1 @courtneyjbarry you are an incredible woman. The way you handle life’s most confusing moments is indescribable and graceful. You are moved by the littlest stories to the most heartbreaking ones, you will give someone your perfume if they say you smell nice, you are freaking hilarious and always stand firm in your faith, a loving sister, an amazing friend and a beautiful daughter. You are the definition of FEARFULLY and WONDERFULLY made baby! #1”

As for what that “4” means? “Best friend turned 26. Part 2. #4 because these women have stayed by my side for 7 years (@ashley_cook 12 years) 4, because you are my 4 for the rest of my life. I love you ladies. You all inspire me to be better, stronger, closer to god and we have lived the most INSANE story together already. Can’t wait for 50 more!! Ps @raquellestevens had an actual panic attack ? it’s a dot! ??‍♀️”

Seriously, this squad knows how to have fun, and have each other’s back, and now they have the tattoos to prove it.

These Are the Secret Nicknames Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and the Royal Family Call Each Other

We think being addressed as “Your Royal Highness” is pretty much one of the coolest perks of being Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, but as it turns out, she, Prince Harry, and the rest of the royal gang have their own nicknames they share with each other. Hello Magazine recently revealed that a lot of the royals have genuinely adorable, secret nicknames for one another. A sampling: “Meg” (OK, we saw that coming), “Tungsten,” and “Haz.”

Apparently, during the recent Invictus Games, people heard Prince Harry calling his wife and recent birthday girl “Meg,” while Prince Charles has reportedly dubbed her “Tungsten”—which has got to be one of the coolest names ever, because it refers to one of the strongest metals on earth (still wanting the backstory on that, though). Meanwhile, Meghan’s friend and former agent Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne dished that Markle calls Prince Harry “Haz.” Hello also reports that Prince Harry has had a few other nicknames in the past: Some of his friends know him as “Spike,” and he actually even had a private Facebook account under “Spike Wells” for a hot minute. He’s also been called “Potter,” after Harry Potter, which we’re dying to know more about.

Meghan and Prince Harry aren’t the only ones with cute nicknames: The whole royal family is all about them. in a 2007 interview with NBC, Prince William shared that Princess Diana’s pet name for him was “Wombat,” which is adorable The Queen, meanwhile, reportedly called herself “Tillabet” as a child, and close family and friends have also referred to her as “Lillibet” over the years. Kate Middleton also went by “Squeak” for a little while when she was a kid. “I was nicknamed ‘Squeak’ just like my guinea pig,” she said in an interview. “There was one called Pip and one called Squeak, because my sister was called Pippa and I was Squeak.”

Honestly, we’re just waiting for the green light until we can start calling the royals these adorable nicknames ourselves.

Taylor Swift's Fans Have Already Figured Out the Secret Words in the 'End Game' Video

When Taylor Swift releases a new music video, social media pretty much implodes. Fans comb through each frame, looking for clues and hidden messages, and then write elaborate theories about them on Twitter and Reddit—which more fans then gobble up. It’s madness, really; Swift’s music videos are more like cultural events than they are actual, well, music videos.

And a new one is about to drop, so get ready to see nothing but Swifties on your timeline for the next 24 hours. “End Game,” Swift’s song with Ed Sheeran and Future, is her next single off Reputation, and the video for it will be released at midnight on Thursday, January 11. The singer teased a short trailer for “End Game” on Instagram this morning, and fans are already flipping out.

Here’s what we know from the few seconds Swift previewed: Sheeran and Future are in it. There’s a lot of drinking happening, too. And yacht dancing. And neon lights. Basically, everyone is lit as hell in this music video—which is on brand for all the turn-up references found in Reputation. (Seriously, Swift talks about alcohol a lot on the album.)

But the most interesting part of the teaser is what’s behind Swift. In one quick frame, you see her walk down a road lined with neon signs in Japanese. Eagle-eyed fans took a screen-shot of the signs and did a little translation work—and what they say isn’t that surprising.

According to Tumblr user chansukcatsmile, Swift is referencing the following words on those neon signs: “End Game,” “A-Team,” Your first string,” “Reputation,” Meredith,” and “Olivia.” The first four phrases are lyrics in “End Game.” The last two, of course, are the names of Swift’s cats. Check it out for yourself, below:

Swift is nothing if not consistent. She pulled a similar move in the “Ready for It” video, and her cats are all over her Instagram. We’re here for it, though. Is it midnight yet?

Zendaya Found a Secret Lookalike in The Rock's Daughter

The Internet is torn: Either Zendaya is an expert time traveler, or she has an adorable little doppelgänger. Those, apparently, are the only two possible explanations for how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s daughter, Jasmine Lia, who will celebrate her second birthday this weekend, looks exactly like a tiny Zendaya.

People first took note of the uncanny resemblance at The Rock’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on Wednesday. Jasmine and her mom, The Rock’s longtime partner, Lauren Hashian, accompanied the Moana star to the ceremony, where he was honored with his very own star on the iconic pathway. According to People, The Rock picked up Jasmine partway through his speech to make a point about his life’s purpose. “The hard work, the work you put in with your own two hands—it all comes down to this. It all comes down to your family, and working hard to love and protect and do everything you can to make your family and the ones you love, their lives better,” he said, before Jasmine stole the show by telling her dad “I love you” into the mic. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

As adorable as the father-daughter moment was, people were mostly enraptured by just how much little Jasmine looks like Zendaya. “When they do a Zendaya biopic we know who’ll play her childhood years,” one person tweeted, because we will definitely eventually need a biopic about Queen Z. Others pointed out that the lookalike situation means that Zendaya and The Rock can easily play daughter and dad in an award-winning comedy film. And a few more hypothesized that Jasmine and Zendaya aren’t two separate people at all, but one Zendaya time traveling back and forth, which, sure? Zendaya herself even commented on the #twinning situation, retweeting a few photos of Jasmine and adding, “OMG ????.”

Betty's Ponytail on 'Riverdale' Has a Secret Meaning Behind It

Whether you’re a casual Riverdale watcher, only know it from the ads, or have your own web of theories about what’s going down, one thing’s obvious: This isn’t the bright, happy town from the comic books. The first season was more of a one-to-one comparison, but as we’ve gotten deeper into the second season, things have taken a turn for the Twin Peaks eerie. And it turns out, a clue about that darkness has been hiding in plain sight this whole time—in Betty’s ponytail, of all places.

As if the constant fog (and death) weren’t enough of a tell, Lili Reinhart exclusively told Glamour that we should keep an eye on Betty’s hair this season. True, we’ve been doing that already. With her always shiny (thanks to this $3 mask), always buttery blond hair, it’s hard to look away. But according to Reinhart, there’s more than it seems to how Betty wears her hair. “When it comes to having her hair down or lower, like a lower pony, it’s usually reflective of her mental state,” Reinhart says. So as Betty’s hair has descended this season, it’s meant bad news for Betty, and potentially what’s to come.

We shouldn’t read too much into her top knots, Reinhart says (apparently Betty just shoves her hair up when she just wants it out of the way—real), but all of Betty’s other looks are pretty loaded. Take when the Black Hood started contacting her, Reinhart says: “In episode five, it was important to me that by the end of the episode, Betty’s hair was completely down, just because that perky girl next door façade was gone and faded and hollowed out. That’s why I had a low pony and a low bun in that episode, because she wasn’t putting in any effort into her appearance. She obviously had bigger fish to fry in the moment.” Handling a murderer will do that to you.

And if you’ve noticed Betty taking a turn for the dark(er) this season, her hair also holds some secrets about how far she’ll go. “Definitely as Betty evolves, and whatever she’s going through in her personal life, it’s seen on her hair. The ponytail is looser this season and not as slicked back and tight,” Reinhart says. The shift comes through in other ways, too: “In her makeup the latter half of the season, she gets a little darker, a little more made up. I think maybe that’s to compensate her breakup with Jug, or her trying to figure out her own sexuality and why that she did the (seductive) dance [in front of Jughead].”

Probably no one can identify with throwing on a black wig and torturing a boy in a hot tub, but Reinhart’s explanation for Betty’s beauty moves is pretty relatable (figuring yourself out, too much black eyeliner-relatable). As Reinhart says, Betty’s trying to figure out “who she is, and what she’s made of. And it’s kind of like [we’re] showing that with the way that she looks, it’s fun and interesting. Not too many people pick up on it, but it’s something that we’re doing behind the scenes intentionally.”

And for fans who love a theme, Reinhart says that they’ve been building to this switch since season one. “I had to battle with Roberto, our show runner, because I’d be like, ‘Can Betty have her hair down for this scene? Or maybe half-up?’ People on Twitter would ask that too, but I was like, ‘Just be patient! I’m fighting for it!'” Reinhart says. “But when Betty does have her hair down, there’s more significance behind it.”
