Homelessness Was This Teenager's Biggest Secret, But Her Incredible Story Has a Happy Ending

Every year, 600,000 families with 1.3 million children experience homelessness in the United States. That’s a staggering number. Under such heartbreaking circumstances, no one would fault children dealing with homelessness for feeling despair that impacts their relationships, drive and performance in school. But Angelique didn’t succumb to any of that.

Her story is one that can inspire both compassion and support from those not directly touched by homelessness, and serve as a powerful message to the 600,000 families dealing with homelessness: they can get through it.

Angelique’s mother, Leigh, suffers from depression and bipolar disorder, which have made it difficult for her to maintain a steady income. Angelique’s father, originally from Nigeria, lives in California. Now 18, Angelique, Leigh, and Leigh’s mother lived in their car for 8 months when Angelique was 13, and Angelique still managed to maintain straight As during this period.

Rather than making her angry or leaving her feeling defeated, Angelique’s past (and current struggles as a result of her mother’s ongoing battle with bipolar disorder) have galvanized her to help others. While she’s a talented actor and dancer, she wants to become a psychologist so she can help people like her mother who are suffering from mental illness. Her primary goal in the near-term is to become completely independent: “I know I have no safety net. Everything that I want to be, it’s all on me. This experience has driven me to this independence in the way that I never felt like I had an option to neglect my schoolwork, because I knew [it] was my ticket to never having to experience anything like this again.”

Watch Angelique, her family, teachers and mentors discuss her journey, including its happy ending. And prepare to be inspired.

These Victoria's Secret Models Are Getting Slammed for Using a Racial Slur in This Video

Several models from the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show are facing backlash today after they were caught on camera singing the n-word backstage during the production.

Pop Crave, a music news Twitter handle, posted a clip on Wednesday afternoon of several Angels singing along to Cardi B’s hit “Bodak Yellow.” In the video, the models in the room, the majority of whom are white, sing along to literally every word in the song—including the n-word, which Cardi B says right before the lyric, “Don’t get comfortable.”

It didn’t take long for Twitter users to find this video and call out these Victoria’s Secret Angels for saying the word. “Nah. That n-word was too loud and clear for there only to be one black girl in this room,” one user tweeted. “Welp @VictoriasSecret plz fire all of them for saying the n-word all carefree. #thanks,” wrote another. This message, from @insatiablevices on Twitter, explains exactly why the video is so problematic: “If you’re not black, don’t say the N word. Point. Blank. Period.”

Several Twitter users rhetorically asked what word the Angels were using to make their point. “Cut a what now? ?,” tweeted a user named @SadieWiggles. “Quick cutting WHOM off???? ??” replied someone else.

Check out these reactions (and more), below:

This story even caught the attention of Cardi B. She hasn’t commented on the backlash directly yet, but she did retweet a message from a user named @IMLORDMA512 that read, “All these bitches said [the n-word], too.”

We’ve reached out to Victoria’s Secret for comment and will update this post if and when the company replies.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé Have a Secret Collaborative Album

First we had Lemonade. Then we had 4:44. And now we have…Untitled Collaborative Album.

Yes, Jay-Z and Beyoncé—two of the music world’s most prominent figures who conveniently happen to be married—made decent progress on a joint album two years ago to address their complex matters of the heart, Jay Z explained in a new profile with T Magazine. (Specifically, addressing the unconfirmed but heavily implied reports that Jay-Z was a serial cheater throughout their many years of marriage, which the duo each explored on their respective albums.) However, Bey’s visual and sonic masterpiece Lemonade ended up getting in the way at the time, so the project was scrapped, for the time being.

“It happened—we were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together,” Jay-Z said in the interview. “And then the music [Beyoncé] was making at that time was further along. So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on. Um, we still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became. There was never a point where it was like, ‘I’m making this album.’ I was right there the entire time.”

While Jay didn’t specify if that album would ever actually see the light of day—but man, we hope so—he was forthcoming about the “pain” the couple channeled while crafting Lemonade and 4:44. “[It was] very, very uncomfortable…but the best place is right in the middle of the pain,” he explained. “And it was uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations. [I was] really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released. At the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another’s craft…you know, most people walk away, and like divorce rate is like 50 percent or something ’cause most people can’t see themselves. The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself.”

Alessandra Ambrosio Confirms That She's Retiring From Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Update: Alessandra Ambrosio shared an emotional note with fans about her final walk down the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway on Instagram. “Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have been working for this amazing brand that inspires me and women all over the world,” she wrote. “In my wildest dreams I would have never imagined doing 17 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows. Thank you Ed [Razek], and all my Victoria’s Secret family for making these memories unforgettable. Last night was so emotional to say goodbye to my #angel sisters but we put on the biggest and best show ever. I could not have done this without all the love and support from my fans. It gives me great pride to be part the Victoria’s Secret movement! I will always be cheering for you! Love you forever”

See her post below.

Original post:

Even angels need to retire at some point, and it looks like Alessandra Ambrosio might be ready to hang up her wings. Reports have been swirling that this will be the Brazilian model’s last time walking down the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. So to get to the bottom of it, People asked the 36-year-old model backstage at this year’s show in Shanghai, China, if the rumors were true. However, it seems even Ambrosio isn’t sure what the future holds.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I can’t even believe that I’m here still. Never in my life would I dream of doing 17 shows, but I’m very happy to be here in China because it’s definitely the biggest show we’ve ever done. We’re on the other side of the world. The venue is so incredible, and culturally it’s so different and to be here I feel so fortunate.”

Not long after, though, the model confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show would be her last. She hopes to spend more time with her two children, as well as focus on her swimwear brand and acting career.

Ambrosio is one of the most iconic Victoria’s Secret models; she made her debut at the VS Fashion Show in 2000 at the age of 20 and has worn the coveted Fantasy Bra two times (once in 2012 and again in 2014). She has even broken the record for wearing the heaviest wings the brand has ever created—a 30-pound Swarovski-encrusted pair that she wore while pregnant in 2011.

One of Alessandra’s closest companions (and the only VS model ranked more influential), Adriana Lima, will thankfully continue on for a few more shows. Adriana told People backstage that she won’t retire until her twentieth show. Shanghai is the 36-year-old’s eighteenth time at the VS Fashion Show, so we can count on at least two years. “I plan to be at 20. Two more years. Maybe more, I don’t know,” Lima said. “It’s nature. I’m working out, I’m being healthy, so let’s see how the body is going to turn out. But I enjoy it. So let’s say 20.”

This year’s theme includes a capsule collection with Balmain that both Ambrosio and Lima will wear and will go on sale immediately after the show. Just another reason to tune in on November 28 and maybe say goodbye to Alessandra Ambrosio.
