Ashley Graham Calls Out Rihanna's Fenty Runway Show For Not Using Curvy Models

PHOTO: Angela Weiss/AFP/Getty Images

Ashley Graham has long been the face of size inclusivity on the runway, constantly pushing designers to do better and cast more plus-size (or curvy, as Graham prefers to be called) models in their shows. And though the fall 2017 shows saw a record 27 plus-size model appearances in New York alone—up from 16 the previous season and a mere six the one before—Ashley says there’s still lots of progress to be made.

In an interview with Yahoo! Beauty, Graham, who has her own lingerie brand, the Ashley Graham Collection, does not think that this year’s collections will be as progressive as last season’s. “It’s sad,” she says. “It’s funny to me, because I’ll look at runways and think, ‘I’d look so great in those clothes’ or ‘I know curvy women who would look so great in those clothes.’”

And she even called out a few names in particular. “I was at Fenty, and that was an amazing show. But how dope would it have been to see some curves on the runway? I think Baja East would be really cool to have curves on the runway. Philipp Plein would be really cool.” Though Rihanna has proved that she’s devoted to providing every woman with an option in the beauty industry—stores cannot keep the deepest shades of Fenty Beauty in stock just days after it dropped—Ashley does have a point that true diversity is not just limited to skin tone.

But it’s not all bad. There were the Christian Siriano and Prabal Gurung runway shows, both of which Graham and other plus-size or curvy models walked in, plus the Chromat show, which was one of the most diverse, with plus-size, transgender, and older models. Nevertheless, designers should all strive to include as many different skin tones, body types, hair textures, etc., as possible.

Gigi Hadid Lost a Shoe on the Anna Sui Runway, Still Struts Better Than Most

Over the years, we’ve witnessed some pretty unfortunate runway mishaps but models are nothing if not consummate professionals and, when faced with an outfit snafu on the catwalk, they usually take it in stride. That, quite literally, is what Gigi Hadid had to do at Anna Sui this evening, when she found herself down one stiletto—though, you wouldn’t even realize it, because at no point did her strut waver.

Hadid was gearing up to close Anna Sui’s Spring 2018 show, wearing her second look from the collection. The get-up required a full, head-to-toe change, down to the footwear—and, it seems that, in the backstage rush, one of her heels wasn’t properly secured. So, as she was following sister Bella down the catwalk, she continued to walk as if nothing had happened… except, if you look really closely, you’ll notice she’s simply walking on the tip of her toes.

Once the lights dimmed and the models lined up for the final lap down the runway, Gigi once again appeared sans right shoe—though, this time around, Bella walked alongside her, giving her a shoulder to lean on.

The show must go on, right? Plus, what was probably an uncomfortable situation turned into an adorable sister moment on the runway. Add that to the list of memorable catwalk-closing moments from New York Fashion Week.

Teyana Taylor Absolutely Dominated the Runway at New York Fashion Week

It’s been a little over a year since the premiere of Kanye West’s music video for “Fade,” but its star, Teyana Taylor, isn’t done reminding the world that she has some serious moves. In fact, she’s expanding her definition of the stage to encompass the traditional runway—and New York Fashion Week will never be the same.

The performer is no NYFW newbie, but she’s usually perched on the front row, looking fly as hell. For Spring 2018, though, Taylor is becoming a more active participant in the spectacle by actually taking to the catwalk herself. First up, she surprised—and delighted—the audience gathered for Italian streetwear brand GCDS on Friday by strutting (and we do mean strutting) down the pastel pink carpet in the final look.

“When I watched the video I was like, ‘Damn, I’m so extra,” Taylor told USA Today after the show. “But then I realized I’m not extra, I’m spicy, that’s all. I’m just spicy, I put a little spice in everybody’s life.”

She’s embracing the fact that her GCDS walk has become a meme (and
even partook in it)—though she’s mostly surprised people were so hyped up about it in the first place. “It’s so crazy, because I was like, ‘I’m short,’ and when I walked out I wasn’t even expecting people to clap,” Taylor explained. “And when everyone went crazy I snatched my glasses off and flipped my hair, and then that became a meme,” she continued. “So I’ve been, like, memed up for the past two days. But it was kinda dope to see that black girl magic, and to put my own ‘umph’ on it.”

What she didn’t spill to the publication is that the GCDS show was but a teaser for what was to come: on Saturday night, Taylor was the final act at Phillip Plein’s Spring 2018 show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

Her appearance wasn’t limited to simply a lap around the runway: Taylor performed some jaw-dropping choreography to the tune of Future (as in, a live performance from Future) that went above, beyond, and even a little farther than the typical finale fare.

And people were feeling it.

Picture it: a model coaching agency co-run by Taylor and Miss J. Alexander, specializing in master courses in slaying.

Christian Siriano's Inclusive Spring 2018 Runway Featured Size, Gender Diversity

Though it was only last September that he introduced size diversity onto his runways, Christian Siriano has long been praised for his inclusive approach to fashion—both in terms of the women he dresses and in how he runs his business. Since his Spring 2017 show, which featured five plus-size models among the lineup, the designer has hired more curvy spokespeople for his brand (on the catwalk and in campaigns), dressed celebrities who have had trouble finding a brand to outfit them, and continued to be an advocate within the industry. And for Spring 2018, Siriano is doubling down on his commitment to represent a variety of folks on the runway during New York Fashion Week by expanding his inclusive casting to include male-bodied, trans, and gender non-conforming models.

After seeing what Siriano estimates to be “over 450 people” through the audition process, the designer put together a cast for his Spring 2018 show that was size-inclusive (“we started with [five] curvy girls—we’re now up to twelve,” he says) as well as gender-inclusive. “This season, I wanted to show that it’s not only about size—it’s also about color, race, and gender,” he tells Glamour. “We have a couple of male models and a beautiful trans model in the show this season. If you’re out shopping and you love a dress, it doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl or whatever.”

It’s the first time the designer, who’s perhaps best known for his evening wear, broadens the scope of his cast to include a range of gender identities. It’s a demographic that has historically been underrepresented on the runway, even as castings become more racially and body diverse. According to The Fashion Spot‘s diversity report for Fall 2017, 12 trans women walked the catwalks throughout Fashion Month—that’s 0.17% of all model bookings for the season.

Siriano says the impetus to diversify on this front came from the customer. “We’re getting requests from around the world, from men asking for wedding dresses—we’re getting everything,” he explains. “People reach out to us every single day—not only directly to us, but to our retailers,” he explains. “I was noticing a change. People, I think, feel comfortable [coming] to me and not feeling turned away. That’s the biggest part of this: I really want anyone who wants to look great in clothes and buy a beautiful suit or dress or whatever to feel good in it. There are no rules for that.”

The Spring 2017 show, with its size-inclusive casting, “changed our entire business,” says Siriano. “I didn’t think it would, but I approach everything that way now. I just want to see different types of people always, whenever we’re booking for any job or for anything—I’m doing a really great beauty project with e.l.f. Cosmetics, and it’s the same process with them: We need a very diverse collection, I’m not interested in making pretty products for ten percent of the world. I love that the retailers are starting to get on board. I love that Moda Operandi is now going up to size 26, and a few seasons ago only went up to a size 12 or 14. I’m trying to, and I know there are other designers doing the same, so it’s awesome that we’re all getting together on this.”

Though these deliberate Fashion Week casting moves certainly draw more eyeballs to his brand, Siriano says it’s his work on the red carpet that brings him a lot of exposure. “I’m dressing so many different types of people—obviously, one of my favorite people to dress is Janet Mock, who’s become such an activist in the trans community, and she’s so amazing,” he explains. “I love creating for her, and that has trickled into a whole other part of the world that I’m super happy and proud of.”

Over the years, he’s dressed celebrities from diverse backgrounds and with different body types—all of which have gotten him a lot of press. (Think Leslie Jones, Laverne Cox, Coco Rocha, Danielle Brooks… The list goes on, and on, and on.) However, this wasn’t a preconceived business strategy from Siriano, but rather the natural evolution of his brand. At this point, though, it’s what the public has come to expect of Siriano— something that the designer actually enjoys, since he’s “up for the challenge” of building upon his own record. He continues: “I want it to just feel normal. It’s great that we’re getting exposure, but I want people to be like, ‘Wow, these girls look great in these clothes.'”

No matter how folks get acquainted with his work, Siriano does stress the value of using the catwalk as a platform. “As a fashion designer, our voice is in the work, like an artist—Fashion Week is kind of our performance of the year, and the clothing is supposed to speak for us,” he says. What you send down the runway, then, is a reflection of your brand and informs how the world sees you. However, he’s well aware that there are bigger fish to fry in 2017—and fashion should be a joyous aspect of a person’s life. “There’s so much hate going on in our world, especially politically, that I think fashion really needs to be the fun part of your day; It shouldn’t be this stressful, horrible thing in the morning, [to not] find something to wear. That’s kind of how I’m approaching it.”

With his Spring 2018 collection, Siriano hopes people will see it as a means “to show how beautiful people are… Everybody obviously has their opinions on what they think is beautiful or what they think is a great look—we’re all subjective, that’s what judging clothing is about. But I think this collection is so bold, vibrant, colorful, and powerful [that what I hope] people take away is, ‘Wow, the women and the men that are on the runway are just beautiful.'” It’s a nice continuation of the phrase Siriano highlighted on the Fall 2017 runway with his slogan T-shirt: People are people.

Yes, There Really Was a Fidget Spinner on the Tory Burch Runway

We know that fidget spinners are pretty much everywhere in 2017. But on a New York Fashion Week runway? At Tory Burch’s spring 2018 show of all shows? This upcoming season is turning out to be quite…interesting.

The Cut was the first to spot the pervasive toy on one of Tory Burch’s spring 2018 models earlier today, at the designer’s show at New York’s Cooper Hewitt Museum on the Upper East Side. (Let’s stop for a moment to ponder what Blair Waldorf’s reaction to this would be.) The fidget spinner was front and center on the green catwalk, dangling from a long chain.

PHOTO: Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho

We thought that Kaia Gerber’s first NYFW appearance or Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty launch would dominate the conversation among the fashion flock. But Burch turned out to be the dark-horse winner with the surprising accessory.

Before you hurt yourself trying to get a good look at the necklace to determine whether that really is what it looks like, a representative for Tory Burch confirmed to Glamour that, no, your eyes aren’t deceiving you: They are fidget spinners. We’ve reached out for more information (about availability, pricing, rationale), and will update our story when we hear back.

The brand is known for resort-minded, ultra-luxe, all-American looks—so a fidget spinner isn’t really what we imagine the Tory Burch customer accessorizes with. But who knows? This could be an attempt to attract more Gen-Z shoppers. Or perhaps Burch is a secret fan and wanted to come up with a way to ensure she and her customers would never leave their beloved fidget spinners at home. Whatever went down at that spring 2018 pitch meeting, we imagine that Burch was trying to reach a new audience with this collection. We just wonder how long it took for the front row to spot the fidget spinner on the accessories lineup.

Kaia Gerber Just Walked Her First NYFW Runway

Fashion world, brace yourself, for the time of Kaia Gerber has arrived: The teenage clone daughter of Cindy Crawford just walked her first NYFW runway.

And what a debut she made. Gerber booked one of the most talked-about shows of the first leg of Fashion Month: Raf Simons’ sophomore collection for Calvin Klein.

Shortly after the Spring 2018 runway wrapped, the model took to Instagram to share the news: “CALVIN KLEIN! there are no words to describe how I feel, I love you endlessly Raf!,” Gerber wrote.

Her big Fashion Week reveal was actually prematurely revealed by Karlie Kloss, when the 25-year-old model posted a picture of her and Gerber in white robes and slippers, presumably backstage preparing for a show, wishing her a happy first NYFW. (“This chicks gonna take her first #NYFW (and the ?) by storm ? luv ya @kaiagerber,” Kloss captioned it.) It was anticipated, if not expected, that Spring 2018 would be Gerber’s big season: She just turned 16—and we do mean just, as her birthday was a few days ago, on September 3—making her eligible to walk the runway in New York, per the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)’s guidelines. Plus, her mom might’ve spilled the beans to WWD last month.

Though Gerber is only now working the Fashion Month circuit, she’s been preparing for this moment—and making waves across the industry in other ways—for a while now. The 16-year-old, who is represented by IMG, was named Breakout Model of the year by Fashion Week Daily in 2016 for her editorial work and Marc Jacobs Beauty contract. (Oh, and the fact that she’s a spitting image of Cindy Crawford.)

Get used to that walk, folks, for this is probably the first of many Kaia sightings during the Spring 2018 season. She’s starred in campaigns for Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang in the past, after all—who’s to say she won’t show up on their lineups, too?
