Christian Siriano for J. Jill: See Every Piece

Christian Siriano is already known as one of the most forward-thinking, inclusive designers in the business. Yet he always manages to find new ways to open up his brand to even more shoppers. That’s why his latest collection is available in sizes 0 to 28, priced under $200, and created in partnership with a retailer that probably has a store near you: J. Jill.

Siriano’s connection to J. Jill goes all the way to the top—to president and CEO Linda Heasley, who previously headed up Lane Bryant and tapped the designer for a collaboration back then, in spring 2016. “We were looking for something that was for a lot of different types of people. When Linda and I were chatting, I loved that this would be even more diverse. With Lane Bryant, it was a plus-size collection. This is 2 to 28,” he tells Glamour.

Of all the ways Siriano has trail-blazed the fashion industry, the way he’s embraced collaborations—and, specifically, mass-market ones—stands out. From the very beginning, he’s been partnering with brands to bring his point of view to different categories and price points: He did that with Lane Bryant (for plus sizes), with Payless ShoeSource (for footwear), and even with Bed Bath and Beyond (for home). “For a long time it was hard because I felt that women who have work and kids couldn’t get something from my brand,” he says. “I want my mom and my sister to be able to go to a store and buy something.” These collections let him do that.

“I never want people to only think of me as a red carpet designer. As a creative person, sometimes you get stuck in what you do and don’t ever branch out. I’ve always wanted the average woman to be able to wear my designs. These collaborations show that I can be quite a diverse designer, which I think is kind of the job: You have to design for all types of people,” Siriano says. Plus, they open doors for him as a business owner: “Collaboration is great for the brand. One job leads to another job, leads to another.” This collection is a case in point.

Though every one of his design pair-ups has its own distinct look and feel (the tulle and embellishment his runways are known for don’t always translate to an affordable price point), there are a few themes that run through all of them and connect them to the greater Christian Siriano brand. There has to be an “idea of romance,” he says: In the J. Jill capsule, that translates into “clothes that have a lot of movement to them—sweeps in skirts, drapes in suits.”

Keeping the retailer’s customer in mind, Siriano’s first collection feels very much centered in workwear, with pieces that can easily be incorporated into an office wardrobe but still feel special enough to wear out for other occasions. There’s a lot of black and white, and then “this kind of electric turquoise moment” that ties it all together. “It’s aspirational, but very attainable,” he says. “We’re giving the J. Jill woman something new, but I still think there’s something that she would be comfortable wearing.” There’s one feature that Siriano is introducing to the retailer with this collection: “The idea of really hugging the body is very different.” Yes, he’s bringing bodycon to J. Jill.

Ahead, check out the first of two collections that Christian Siriano created for J. Jill.

Lady Gaga and Her Fiancé Christian Carino Have Split

Lady Gaga and her fiancé, Christian Carino, have split after roughly two years of dating.

A rep for the singer confirmed this news to People on Tuesday, February 19. “It just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end,”they tell the magazine. “There’s no long dramatic story.”

According to People, speculation about the state of Gaga’s engagement began at the Grammy Awards February 10, when fans noticed she wasn’t wearing her ring and didn’t thank Carino during her acceptance speech for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. (She and Bradley Cooper won the honor for “Shallow” from their movie A Star Is Born .)

Carino has been by Gaga’s side throughout this entire awards season, though, from the Screen Actors Guild Awards to the Golden Globes. However, he was noticeably absent at the Grammys.

People reported Gaga and Carino were an item back in February 2017 after they were spotted getting cozy at a Kings of Leon concert. In October 2018, Gaga confirmed she was engaged to Carino, who’s a talent agent for the Creative Arts Agency (CAA).

More evidence Gaga‘s relationship was over came on Valentine’s Day, when she posted a photo of her new tattoo tributing “La Vien En Rose,” which she sings in *A Star Is Born,” but didn’t say anything about Carino. “Happy Valentine’s Day. A tattoo toast to ‘la vie en rose’ by the beautiful @winterstone my spinal cord is now a rose,” she posted five days ago.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Lady Gaga, who just wrapped the first leg of her Las Vegas residency, Enigma. Her next big milestone is performing “Shallow” at the 2019 Oscars this Sunday, where she’s nominated for Best Original Song as well as Best Actress. Her A Star Is Born, co-star, Bradley Cooper, is expected to join her on stage for the performance.

Designer Christian Siriano Says He Literally Tripled His Business by Adding Plus Sizes

Christian Siriano has won huge amounts of acclaim in the past—not just for his gorgeous designs, but for his embrace of pretty much anyone who wants to wear his creations. In an industry still dominated by sample sizes (though it’s slowly getting better), Siriano puts an emphasis on being size inclusive. As Fawnia Soo Hoo wrote for Glamour in February, “He’s also managed to smash the mold of what a typical “red-carpet moment” looks like. No matter your age or body type, if Siriano likes your work, he’ll want to dress you—a strategy that’s proved successful with a broad range of celebrities and their stylists.”

He’s featured plus-size models in his fashion shows, designed a gorgeous wedding gown for a plus-size blogger, and made an incredible dress for Leslie Jones’ Ghostbusters premiere when other designers didn’t step up. At this year’s Oscars alone a staggering 17 women wore his designs.

Siriano’s efforts to be inclusive separate him from other couture designers, but as he told the executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America Fern Mallis at a recent panel at the 92nd St. Y, his personal mission and love for every single kind of woman has proven to be great for his brand. To the tune of: Dressing plus-size women has tripled—yep, tripled—his business. (Now is a good time to add that the plus-size fashion market is worth $21 billion.)

“Adding plus sizes to my line tripled my business. Why wouldn’t you do that?! Do we not want to triple the business? Do we not think these women should wear our clothes? Do we not want these women to have beautiful things because we’re afraid they’re not beautiful? What is going on here?,” the 32-year-old said at the event.

And while he acknowledged that designing beyond sample sizes involves different considerations, he also added that his brand (rightly) never charges more for larger-sized designs. After all, “You want to look cute in a dress and you’re a size 26? Why not?!”

Siriano’s business is now 50 percent plus size, he said—and his clout is leading to change within the industry. “We got Moda Operandi to change their whole website—now they go up to our sizes,” the designer said. “Knowing we have a part in change like that, it’s amazing… but it’s still crazy to me that it’s not the norm.”

Your First Major Look at Christian and Ana's Wedding in 'Fifty Shades Freed' Is Here

Fifty Shades of Grey fans have been waiting since February to catch a glimpse of the newest and final installment of the BDSMish trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed. Of course, the glimpse they got in February was more of a tease: after the credits of Fifty Shades Darker rolled, the screen cut to Anastasia Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, wearing a wedding dress and standing beside an unknown man, who is almost certainly Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey. Probably-Grey says: “I solemnly vow to keep you safe for as long as we both shall live.” Cut to Steele and Grey in some pretty standard locales for those crazy kids: on the beach, in a private jet, in a shower. But as it turns out, that one line of dialogue was telling—because there’s far more in store for the honeymooning couple, and it involves quite a bit of danger (not the sexy-pretend-Red Room kind, the actual kind with bad guys).

Thanks to an actual trailer released on Sunday, we get a minute-long look at the new installment, which is set to be released on February 14 and throw off thousands of couples’ Valentine’s Day plans.

There is Mr. Grey reciting some vows, much preparation for the wedding (including token floaty shot of veil), and a ring sliding on Anastasia’s—excuse us, Mrs. Grey‘s finger. (We’re not assuming here; the trailer is very clear that she takes his last name.)

Cut to: a jet. “We own this?” Anastasia smiles. “We own this,” Grey answers. This seems like this should have been discussed as part of every responsible couple’s pre-wedding financial planning, but hey.

Next: a James Bond-like shot of Grey striding out of the ocean surf, Anastasia looking appreciatively over her sunglasses (get it, girl).

Then! A gun! A sexy clip! Swimming! A car chase?! Sexy times in front of a mirror! Some boat stuff that looks reckless! A riding crop! More sexy times! Guns going off! A possible kidnapping?! Such opposite ends of the spectrum! We are exhausted.

Anyway, watch the full thing here:

Oh, and here’s a look at Anasatia’s wedding dress, which should go on the cover of every romance novel in the land.

Good news, though: this isn’t even the trailer. According to the last couple seconds of the clip, the first real trailer drops in November—and you can bet we’ll keep you posted on that.

Leslie Jones Reacting to the Christian Siriano Show Is the Best Thing You'll See All NYFW

Christian Siriano, with his elegant evening wear and inclusive approach to casting, is a designer worth cheering for. And his gowns, whether they’re on the red carpet or on the runway, definitely possess all the characteristics of a swoon-worthy garment: luxe fabrics, bold colors, over-the-top silhouettes. And although most guests at a show of his might keep their excitement (barely) contained, Leslie Jones wasn’t about that at Siriano’s Spring 2018 show during New York Fashion Week. In fact, she provided excited live commentary to the entire catwalk—and it’s already the best Fashion Month dispatch you’ll see this season.

Jones first connected with Siriano last summer, when the designer famously made her a custom gown for the Ghostbusters premiere after she tweeted that she couldn’t find a brand that would dress her for the red carpet. She’s continued to wear his work since, and is clearly a fan—just watch how she reacted to the models walking down the runway.

If you follow her Game of Thrones recaps, you already knew the comedian had some solid commentating skills. But at Siriano’s show it became clear that Jones needs to be doing this at basically any and every Fashion Week event.

The fashion crowd was really feeling Jones’ energy.

The excitement really is contagious, and it’s not something we often see from the front-row crowd. But we have to say: Jones’ unfiltered reactions to what was really a spectacular sight—a diverse group of models, dressed in their Spring 2018 best, working it for the photographers at the end of the runway—reminds us of what makes these fashion shows feel special.

But also, designers: Can you please reserve a front-row seat for Jones at any and all NYFW events? Thanks in advance.

Christian Siriano's Inclusive Spring 2018 Runway Featured Size, Gender Diversity

Though it was only last September that he introduced size diversity onto his runways, Christian Siriano has long been praised for his inclusive approach to fashion—both in terms of the women he dresses and in how he runs his business. Since his Spring 2017 show, which featured five plus-size models among the lineup, the designer has hired more curvy spokespeople for his brand (on the catwalk and in campaigns), dressed celebrities who have had trouble finding a brand to outfit them, and continued to be an advocate within the industry. And for Spring 2018, Siriano is doubling down on his commitment to represent a variety of folks on the runway during New York Fashion Week by expanding his inclusive casting to include male-bodied, trans, and gender non-conforming models.

After seeing what Siriano estimates to be “over 450 people” through the audition process, the designer put together a cast for his Spring 2018 show that was size-inclusive (“we started with [five] curvy girls—we’re now up to twelve,” he says) as well as gender-inclusive. “This season, I wanted to show that it’s not only about size—it’s also about color, race, and gender,” he tells Glamour. “We have a couple of male models and a beautiful trans model in the show this season. If you’re out shopping and you love a dress, it doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl or whatever.”

It’s the first time the designer, who’s perhaps best known for his evening wear, broadens the scope of his cast to include a range of gender identities. It’s a demographic that has historically been underrepresented on the runway, even as castings become more racially and body diverse. According to The Fashion Spot‘s diversity report for Fall 2017, 12 trans women walked the catwalks throughout Fashion Month—that’s 0.17% of all model bookings for the season.

Siriano says the impetus to diversify on this front came from the customer. “We’re getting requests from around the world, from men asking for wedding dresses—we’re getting everything,” he explains. “People reach out to us every single day—not only directly to us, but to our retailers,” he explains. “I was noticing a change. People, I think, feel comfortable [coming] to me and not feeling turned away. That’s the biggest part of this: I really want anyone who wants to look great in clothes and buy a beautiful suit or dress or whatever to feel good in it. There are no rules for that.”

The Spring 2017 show, with its size-inclusive casting, “changed our entire business,” says Siriano. “I didn’t think it would, but I approach everything that way now. I just want to see different types of people always, whenever we’re booking for any job or for anything—I’m doing a really great beauty project with e.l.f. Cosmetics, and it’s the same process with them: We need a very diverse collection, I’m not interested in making pretty products for ten percent of the world. I love that the retailers are starting to get on board. I love that Moda Operandi is now going up to size 26, and a few seasons ago only went up to a size 12 or 14. I’m trying to, and I know there are other designers doing the same, so it’s awesome that we’re all getting together on this.”

Though these deliberate Fashion Week casting moves certainly draw more eyeballs to his brand, Siriano says it’s his work on the red carpet that brings him a lot of exposure. “I’m dressing so many different types of people—obviously, one of my favorite people to dress is Janet Mock, who’s become such an activist in the trans community, and she’s so amazing,” he explains. “I love creating for her, and that has trickled into a whole other part of the world that I’m super happy and proud of.”

Over the years, he’s dressed celebrities from diverse backgrounds and with different body types—all of which have gotten him a lot of press. (Think Leslie Jones, Laverne Cox, Coco Rocha, Danielle Brooks… The list goes on, and on, and on.) However, this wasn’t a preconceived business strategy from Siriano, but rather the natural evolution of his brand. At this point, though, it’s what the public has come to expect of Siriano— something that the designer actually enjoys, since he’s “up for the challenge” of building upon his own record. He continues: “I want it to just feel normal. It’s great that we’re getting exposure, but I want people to be like, ‘Wow, these girls look great in these clothes.'”

No matter how folks get acquainted with his work, Siriano does stress the value of using the catwalk as a platform. “As a fashion designer, our voice is in the work, like an artist—Fashion Week is kind of our performance of the year, and the clothing is supposed to speak for us,” he says. What you send down the runway, then, is a reflection of your brand and informs how the world sees you. However, he’s well aware that there are bigger fish to fry in 2017—and fashion should be a joyous aspect of a person’s life. “There’s so much hate going on in our world, especially politically, that I think fashion really needs to be the fun part of your day; It shouldn’t be this stressful, horrible thing in the morning, [to not] find something to wear. That’s kind of how I’m approaching it.”

With his Spring 2018 collection, Siriano hopes people will see it as a means “to show how beautiful people are… Everybody obviously has their opinions on what they think is beautiful or what they think is a great look—we’re all subjective, that’s what judging clothing is about. But I think this collection is so bold, vibrant, colorful, and powerful [that what I hope] people take away is, ‘Wow, the women and the men that are on the runway are just beautiful.'” It’s a nice continuation of the phrase Siriano highlighted on the Fall 2017 runway with his slogan T-shirt: People are people.
