Here's When Friends Is Returning to Streaming

Are you ready for some good news? Friends is coming back to streaming—and it’s happening sooner than you think.

If that news has you jumping up and down and wildly clapping—like that time Phoebe and Rachel spotted Monica and Chandler making out from the window of Ross’s apartment—you are very much not alone. If anything could comfort us during these hard times, it’s the easy banter of our six faves as they sip coffee at Central Perk.

Times have been tough for Friends fans since the show left Netflix at the beginning of 2020, but we now have an official launch date for its new home, the streaming platform HBO Max: May 27. The entire catalog of episodes will be available on the service from day one.

But this show isn’t the only classic you’ll be able to stream in a just over a month. The Big Bang Theory, The Bachelor, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The O.C., Pretty Little Liars, and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown will also be part of your subscription. Shows like Gossip Girl, South Park, and The West Wing will be available at some point in the first year, according to a press release. Subscribers will also be able to access a library of more than 2,000 feature films within the first year.

Unfortunately, you will have to wait a bit longer for the highly-anticipated, unscripted Friends cast reunion, as shooting was delayed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our number one goal is having extraordinary content for everyone in the family, and the HBO Max programming mix we are so excited to unveil on May 27th will bear that out,” Robert Greenblatt, chairman of Warner Media Entertainment and direct-to-consumer, said in a release. “Even in the midst of this unprecedented pandemic, the all-star teams behind every aspect of HBO Max will deliver a platform and a robust slate of content that is varied, of the highest quality, and second to none. I’m knocked out by the breadth and depth of our new offering, from the Max originals, our Warner Bros library and acquisition titles from around the world, and of course the entirety of HBO.”

HBO Max will also feature original programming. We’re particularly excited for Love Life, an anthology series, starring Anna Kendrick. The show chronicles “the journey from first love to last love, and how the people we’re with along the way make us into who we are when we finally end up with someone forever.”

Mostly, though, we can’t wait to clap along to that Friends theme song blasting from our screens once again.

Saturday Night Live Is Returning This Saturday—Remotely

Saturday Night Live is coming back this Saturday, April 11…remotely.

Back in March, NBC announced that Saturday Night Live was halting production due to the coronavirus, but now it looks like all those Zoom parties and living room concerts have inspired the powers that be to bring back the sketch comedy program, even if they have to get a little scrappy about it.

On April 9, NBC released a statement that SNL at Home, a social-distancing version of the series during it’s normal 11:30 P.M. ET time slot, is coming—complete with Weekend Update and “original content” from the writers and cast that has been “remotely-produced.” So don’t worry, everyone is still staying home and there will be no live studio audience. Who else has a feeling things are gonna get weird?

But will all this “original content” be pre-taped, taking the “Live” out of Saturday Night Live? That remains to be seen. NBC has also remained mum on any celeb cameos or hosts.

Might we recommend John Krasinski, who has been hosting the Weekend Update-esque series Some Good News on his own YouTube channel? He was even scheduled to host SNL before all this craziness began. Just saying…

Krasinski even has a knack for getting big guest stars for Some Good News. On April 5, he posted the second episode of his broadcast with the entire cast of Hamilton and his wife Emily Blunt joining in to surprise a very excited 9-year-old, Aubrey, for her birthday. Aubrey was supposed to see Hamilton when the Broadway tour came to her hometown this week, but the show was canceled for social distancing reasons. Instead, her mom tweeted, they’d be watching Mary Poppins Returns.

Krasinski and Blunt saw the tweet and invited Aubrey to a Zoom meeting for her to meet Mary Poppins, who is played by Blunt in the film, but they didn’t stop there. After Krasinski offered to fly Aubrey into NYC to see Hamilton on Broadway when this is all over, Lin-Manuel Miranda and the entire original Broadway cast entered the chat to one-up the host and perform a song from the show. You can watch the whole thing below:

I personally would love to see Krasinski and Miranda face off on this weekend’s SNL, wouldn’t you?

Meghan Markle Might Be Returning to Television

We all know that before she became the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was a working actress, most famous for her role as Rachel Zane on the USA show Suits. And like most actors and actresses, she auditioned and shot a bunch of pilots before landing her big break.

Now one of those shows that never aired might make its debut. During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Max Greenfield (Schmidt from New Girl) talked about a pilot he shot many, many years ago with Meghan Markle for Comedy Central. It was called The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down and also featured actor Adam Pally of Happy Endings and The Mindy Project fame. (For those of you less familiar, studios and networks shoot numerous pilots, or single episodes of a show, and then decide after watching them which ones to pick up for more filming.)

Greenfield says they filmed the show a decade,”or even more,” ago. “I got some sort of email recently saying this person has bought it and they are putting it out,” he explained. “I was like, ‘Great. Good for you.’ I would assume they would have their reasons as to why they’re putting it out.” He doesn’t know where the episode might air, though. The Hollywood Reporter describes the show as a “tongue-in-cheek look at twenty-something singles clubbing and partying in Los Angeles.”

Sadly, Greenfield and Markle didn’t stay in touch. “Meghan and I, we didn’t connect after that or during that,” he said. “Look, had I known, I maybe would’ve played my cards a little differently.”

This pilot is more proof the Markle Sparkle is real. Its power knows no bounds—or time periods, apparently. The Television Academy isn’t ready, but I definitely am. Clear your queues, people.

Here's Why Ellen Pompeo Is OK With Sandra Oh Not Returning to *Grey's Anatomy*

One of the most dynamic duos in Grey’s Anatomy history is Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). But sadly, their iconic reign ended when Oh left the series in 2013. The actress has been quite busy since then, most recently starring in the critically-acclaimed BBC America series Killing Eve. (She picked up a Golden Globe Award for her performance in the show earlier this year.)

Even still, people are stuck on the idea of Oh making a return to Grey’s Anatomy some time in the future. After all, she was a pivotal part of the long-running series, which may end with season 16, so fans are hoping for some on-screen magic before time runs out.

Unfortunately, this isn’t something in Oh’s per view at the moment. “I get [the Grey’s] question regularly, and I answer it really based on what I’m feeling that day — and today [my answer] is no,” she told TV Line last June.

And this is something Pompeo is cool with—even though she “selfishly” wants Oh to resurrect Cristina Yang. Her reasoning? She’s happy Oh is finding success and fulfillment in her current work.

“Selfishly I would love to see Sandra Oh come back to Grey’s,” Pompeo told TV Line this week. “But I also love Killing Eve so much, and I love seeing her have so many of these incredible moments. So, as much as I love Sandra, I’d rather see her shine out on her own. I enjoy that more. That‘s more gratifying to me.” Spoken like a true friend!

According to TV Line, Oh’s affection for Killing Eve is a major reason why a return to Grey’s isn’t on her radar. “I love Eve. I really love her,” Oh told the outlet. “I also love Cristina Yang. I’m constantly stunned at the response I still get from [Grey’s fans], you know? It’s so fantastic, and it pleases me. It gives me a tremendous amount of satisfaction that, you know, you did work that actually continues going on past the time that you’ve left it… It’s really phenomenal. And the only way that I think I can continue doing good work is just staying true to my own compass. And that compass is pointing north.”

No matter where her compass points, though, we’ll always have the 200+ episodes of Grey’s featuring Cristina to keep us warm. And good news: they’re all streaming on Netflix.

Kim Kardashian Opens Up About Returning to Paris for the First Time Since Robbery

Kim Kardashian West returned to Paris on Thursday, June 21 for the first time since her robbery at gunpoint in 2016. Naturally, the trip was a significant milestone for the 37-year-old reality star, and she wrote an open letter on her website about what it was like to return for the same event—Paris Fashion Week—and how her life has changed since the experience.

“I went back to Paris to witness Kanye’s BFF, Virgil Abloh, make history with his first collection and runway show for Louis Vuitton during Mens Fashion Week. It was such an emotional trip!,” KKW wrote in a blog post on her website. “For me, it was the perfect time to come back to a place where I fell in love, but also a place where I suffered great trauma.”

Kardashian explained that she was only in France for 12 hours before returning to the United States for Teyana Taylor’s listening party (Kanye West produced the singer’s upcoming album). Kardashian also said that having her husband with her and beefing up her security made her feel more safe. “Emotionally, I feel calm. I’ve truly put the experience behind me, and have learned and grown from it. Because of this, mentally coming back to Paris wasn’t difficult for me,” Kardashian wrote. “It feels refreshing to face my fears and overcome them. For me, there’s no point in staying in a f—ed-up state of mind. ‘Feel it, go through it and move on’ has always been how I try to live my life. I would never suggest to anyone how to grieve, I can simply say what has worked for me.”

Kim has spoken candidly about her experience in the past two years, including her use of crystals to help her heal emotionally. However, she has also documented how hard it still is for her to feel safe while traveling and has become an outspoken gun control advocate.

“I’m not against guns and I’m not against people owning guns. After what happened to me in Paris, I know how important it is to be safe and to have armed security,” she explained. “All of my security is armed, but they also support stricter gun control laws and believe that we should restrict access to firearms for people with mental illness, anyone previously convicted of a misdemeanor, those who have been subject to a temporary restraining order and those at a higher risk of committing gun violence.”

Sara Ramirez Says She's Open to Returning to 'Grey's Anatomy' as Callie Torres One Day

Last May, Sara Ramirez announced she would be leaving Grey’s Anatomy for good, putting her among other departed Grey’s veterans like Sandra Oh and Katherine Heigl. After 10 years on the show, Callie Torres exited from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital during the season 12 finale, making up with her ex-wife, gaining permission to see their daughter, and moving to New York to live with her girlfriend. Although her run ended on a happy note, many fans (understandably) mourned the end of Callie’s storyline.

But now, Grey’s fanatics might have a reason for celebration…well, maybe. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ramirez said she isn’t completely opposed to Callie coming back. “When Shonda [Rhimes] and I last spoke, we agreed to keep the conversations going, and she knows I’m open to keeping those conversations going,” she said. Nevertheless, she doesn’t have any regrets about leaving when she did. When asked if she thought her Grey’s departure was the right decision, she answered, “Absolutely.”

A year and a half ago, Ramirez told EW in a statement that she was leaving the Shondaland flagship to focus on other endeavors. “I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now I’m taking some welcome time off,” she said at the time. And since her exit, she has remained off the small screen, working instead on advocacy, outreach, and legal issues in the LGBTQ community.

“It has been a really full year,” Ramirez said. (She came out as bisexual last October.) “There were a lot of important events that I got the opportunity to be a part of.” These included participating in an ACLU-run Austin, Texas rally against anti-trans legislation, speaking about intersectionality at the Equality March in D.C., and accepting a Trailblazer Award from the LGBT Center in New York.

After such a monumental year, Ramirez made her television return on Madam Secretary on Sunday, where she debuted a new character, Kat Sandoval, who is a political strategist that took time off until she returned to the State Department. She hasn’t given any more intel on Callie’s potential return, but if Cristina, Izzie, and George’s post-exit “cameos” were anything to go by, there’s a possibility we might see Callie a lot sooner than we expect.
