The U.S. Open Announces Female Athletes Will No Longer Get Penalized for Pregnancy Leave

The U.S. Open is making a major change to how it seeds female players for upcoming tennis tournaments: namely, by no longer penalizing female players who return to the sport after having children. It’s an institutional breakthrough and major win for women in tennis—and it comes after backlash surrounding Serena Williams‘ huge drop in ranking after returning to the sport from maternity leave.

After the French Open was widely criticized for their handling of Williams’ return to the tournament last month following her pregnancy—the former No. 1 was ranked No. 453 after her maternity leave—the organization has now spoken out to announce a change in post-maternity protocol, one that will no longer penalize any female player returning to the sport after pregnancy.

The Women’s Tennis Association, which ranked Williams at No. 451 following her maternity leave, also received backlash and mounting criticism for its inability to make seeding allowances specifically for pregnancies—though it does have a protection that grants them “access to eight events, including two Grand Slams, and wildcard entries into tournaments they previously won,” reports Fast Company. The organization has since said it would reconsider its position—but in the meantime, the U.S. Open has taken measures to move the needle forward on this issue by creating a special protection on seedings for women who return to the sport post-pregnancy.

The U.S. Tennis Association oversees the U.S. Open, and in an interview with The New York Times on Friday, USTA president and chairwoman Katrina Adams explained the reasoning behind the Open’s decision for seeding protection: “It’s the right thing to do for these mothers that are coming back. We’ve shown that we have been a leader over the decades, from equal prize money onward to what we are doing today.”

“We are all about social justice and equality, and this is definitely an instance of equality,” she continued. “We think it’s a good message for our current female players and future players: It’s O.K. to go out and be a woman and become a mother and then come back to your job, and I think that’s a bigger message.”

Adams went on to say that forcing a player to come back from pregnancy at a lower position than when she left would be like asking a top executive to return from pregnancy leave at an entry level position in her company.

“I’m a former player and I get it,” she continued. “I would not want to be the No. 32 player in the world who has worked hard in the last year to obtain this ranking. But we’re a Grand Slam, and we have the right and the opportunity to seed the players according to what we feel is justified.”

“Serena Williams is arguably the greatest player to ever play, with 23 Grand Slam titles,” Adams said. “She deserves the respect to be put in that position.”

Lili Reinhart Shuts Down Pregnancy Rumors: 'My Body Is Something I Will Never Apologize For'

Lili Reinhart‘s had to deal with inquiries about her personal life for quite some time now. Ever since rumors erupted last summer that she’s dating her Riverdale co-star Cole Sprouse, Reinhart’s been living her life in a metaphorical fishbowl of sorts. Still, the actress has frequently shut down the idea that fans are entitled to information about her personal life. “It’s horrifying how invested some people are in my love life. Emphasis on ‘my.’ It is mine. It is private,” she wrote on Tumblr back in October.

Now, she’s addressing a different—and more offensive—type of scrutiny. Over the weekend, a photo surfaced of Reinhart that led many fans to think she’s pregnant. Below, just a few of the tweets from her followers:

Something similar happened to Today host Savannah Guthrie last week, when people online started debating her body and wondering whether or not she’s expecting. It’s a phenomenon that predominantly happens to female celebrities—and it’s not OK. Reinhart took to Instagram Stories on Monday (May 28) to say just that—and to confirm that, no, she isn’t pregnant.

“It’s unfortunate that one unflattering photo of my stomach circulating the Internet causes hundreds of people to think that I’m pregnant,” she wrote. “Nope. Not pregnant. This is just my body. And sometimes I’m bloated. Sometimes an unflattering photo is taken of me. Sometimes I go through periods of time where I gain weight.”

Reinhart continued, “My body is something that I will NEVER apologize for. My body will constantly go through change. And so will yours. And that’s fine. So let’s not much so much time and effort into caring about a stranger’s figure.”

Reinhart’s series of posts inspired her co-star Camila Mendes to open up on Instagram about her own body struggles. “I feel bloated 24/7. My weight fluctuates constantly, it comes with being a woman and should be celebrated, not criticized,” Mendes wrote. “I used to fear the day that people would start publicly criticizing my body and commenting on my weight. I’ve suffered too much from my own self-criticism, and wasn’t sure that I could handle it from others. But seeing somebody as beautiful as Lili respond to public scrutiny by preaching and practicing self-love is all it takes for me to overcome that fear. Proud to call her my friend. Let’s continue inspiring women to love their bodies.

Well said. These Twitter users’ time would be better spent catching up on the bonkers second season of Riverdale.

Kirsten Dunst Just Confirmed Her Pregnancy in the Most Extravagant Way

In December rumors started circulating that Kirsten Dunst and her fiancé, Jesse Plemons, are expecting their first child. Dunst didn’t confirm this news herself then, but now we have proof: The Beguiled actress finally revealed her pregnancy to the world—in the most opulent way possible, mind you. No, she didn’t do an Instagram photo shoot à la Beyoncé. Instead, she appeared in the Rodarte fall 2018 lookbook wearing a dress that shows off her baby bump. Dunst’s hands are touching her stomach in the photo, also, to, you know, drive the point home even more.

Check out the image for yourself, below.

Dunst may have just confirmed her pregnancy, but she’s been hinting for a while now that she’s ready to have kids.

“It’s time to have babies and chill,” Dunst told Marie Claire U.K. in July 2017. “I wasn’t one of those ‘I need a baby!’ people until my goddaughter was born. I love her so much. That love is just, like, you can’t experience that unless you have a kid. I put her to bed last night, and she woke up this morning and said to her mom, ‘Where’s Kiki?’ I just love that love. That’s what I want.”

This pregnancy isn’t the only life change Dunst’s currently dealing with, either. She and Plemons are reportedly tying the knot this spring in Austin, Texas, and she’s having a blast planning the wedding. “I never thought I was that person who’d have a Pinterest board. I like doing all of the pinning things,” Dunst said on Live With Kelly & Ryan last September. “It’s really fun, and because we create it together from the beginning, it’s a really nice thing to do together. It’s going to be so personal and fun. We’re having a really good time.”

Congrats, KD!

Khloé Kardashian Played Super Coy When Asked About Kylie Jenner's Pregnancy Rumors

Two-thirds of the Kardashian-Jenner pregnancy mysteries are solved. In September, Kim Kardashian confirmed she and Kanye West are having their third child via surrogate. Three months later, Khloé Kardashian revealed she is expecting her first baby ever with basketball-player boyfriend Tristan Thompson. However, Kylie Jenner is still keeping mum about rumors that she’s also pregnant. Save for calling her new lip kits “babies” in a video a few months ago, Kylie’s doing an excellent job at keeping people in the dark about this whole thing. Sure, her sisters may have come to her defense a few times when the speculation got out of hand, but Kylie’s yet to confirm the actual news. We straight-up don’t know if she’s pregnant yet.

And Khloé’s new interview with Ellen DeGeneres doesn’t bring us any closer to the truth, either. The Good American entrepreneur sat down with DeGeneres this week to talk about her newly-announced pregnancy, but obviously the conversation pivoted to Kylie.

“Is Kylie craving things yet?” DeGeneres asked Khloé, to which she responded, “What do you mean?”

“She’s pregnant,” DeGeneres said. Khloé, naturally, played coy at this. “Oh, I don’t know what you’re taking about,” she said.

DeGeneres didn’t back down, though. “Come on now,” she said, but Khloé bounced right back and said, “Come on, Ellen.”

“Why wasn’t she on the Christmas card?” DeGeneres then asked. “Um, I don’t know. You gotta ask Kylie,” Khloe said. “Why don’t you get Kylie on the show?”

This banter went on for a few more seconds before DeGeneres said, “She must be pregnant. There’s too much secrecy around it. Look at your eyes! Y’all, she’s pregnant…I will make a bet right now that she is pregnant. I can tell by her eyes.”

They never reached a resolution, of course. Khloé just kept smiling and calling DeGeneres “cute.” Bahhh, the madness continues. Watch all of this go down:

Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t receive anything more concrete until Kylie herself says something—probably on Snapchat.

How TV Is Tackling Abortion and Pregnancy in Trump's America

Given the daily deluge of political attacks on women’s rights and the female body, it’s no surprise that stories of women choosing to keep or terminate their pregnancies are being elevated on TV. In the last few years, we’ve seen more diverse portrayals of abortion and pregnancy, from shows like Jane the Virgin to Alias Grace. In America, abortion is still—at best—considered taboo, but reproductive rights are gaining more visibility thanks to creators offering real-life scenarios on screen .

Of course, a woman’s right to choose has popped up on television for decades, like on Maude as early as 1972. But these storylines have always come few and far between and are often displayed as shocking, haunting moments. Today, more female creators are showing these narratives in nuanced ways, which feels like a response to the current administration’s crusade against reproductive rights.

Beyond politics, though, women process these experiences differently, which is why it’s refreshing to see varying perspectives play out. These moments are fragile and should be handled deftly, and we need to see broader depictions of pregnancy, from abortion to early motherhood to, more generally, the way we treat women in these situations.

The list below isn’t comprehensive, but they are some of the most important portrayals of pregnancy and abortion on TV right now. Read on.

How Kris Jenner Reacted to Khloé Kardashian's Pregnancy

On Wednesday, Khloé Kardashian finally revealed that, yes, she is pregnant with her first child.

In a black and white Instagram post that showed off her burgeoning baby bump, she wrote, “My greatest dream realized! We are having a baby! I had been waiting and wondering but God had a plan all along. He knew what He was doing. I simply had to trust in Him and be patient. I still at times can’t believe that our love created life! Tristan, thank you for loving me the way that you do! Thank you for treating me like a Queen! Thank you for making me feel beautiful at all stages!”

She then called out Tristan Thompson, her boyfriend and the father of her baby, who is seen cradling her belly in the picture. She thanks him for “making me a mommy.” She added, “You have made this experience even more magical than I could have envisioned! I will never forget how wonderful you’ve been to me during this time! Thank you for making me so happy my love!” She then thanked her fans for all their positive vibes and for their understanding of her desire to keep the pregnancy quiet for a while.
