Why Zac Efron Reportedly Didn’t Sing During the ‘High School Musical’ Reunion

Blame it on the WiFi. Apparently, that’s what Zac Efron should be saying to all the High School Musical fans who were upset that he didn’t participate in the singing portion of the cast’s virtual reunion on the Disney Family Singalong special that aired last week.

In case you missed it, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, and the rest of the East High Wildcats virtually reunited for the special and sang “We’re All in This Together.” Efron only appeared separately to introduce the song. “It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends,” he said.

Now one of Efron’s costars says Efron had a good reason for such a limited appearance. “What Kenny [Ortega, HSM’s director] told us when we were on the call was that at that time they hadn’t spoken to Zac yet,” Monique Coleman, who appeared in the reunion, told TMZ.

She continued, “I personally thought it was really cool that he was able to come in at the last minute and just do something. It means so much to the fans to see him and know that we are in it together.”

She went on to explain that the process of doing the song was very involved and they were filming all day. “I don’t really know, but if his WiFi wasn’t strong…I really don’t know where he is in the world, last I saw was like Papua New Guinea…but did you see the quality of [his] video though? It was, like, fuzzy,” she said. Coleman ended her interview calling Efron “one of the realest people” she knows and “more concerned with being a person than being a celebrity.”

Fans were super vocal on social media about how bummed they were to not see Zac Efron singing with the entire cast.

But it seems that a bad connection and no rehearsal time limited what he could do. Whatever the case, we’re glad he made the appearance.

Zac Efron Fans Are Livid About That High School Musical Reunion Performance

A few fans on Twitter weren’t feeling so happy after Zac Efron’s appearance in the mini High School Musical reunion for the recent Disney Family Singalong.

Here’s what went down: On April 16, ABC hosted a singalong of a bunch of Disney classics performed by the likes of Ariana Grande, Darren Criss, and Queen Beyoncé herself. But for some reason, Efron did not take part in the highly-anticipated performance of “We’re All in This Together” by the original High School Musical cast. Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Vanessa Hudgens, Monique Coleman, and Corbin Bleu joined director Kenny Ortega on the video call, but Efron simply introduced the performance before peacing out.

“It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends,” he said, never to be heard from again.

Fans on Twitter were not impressed. “WHERE!! IS!! ZAC!! EFRON!!” one user wrote. “my childhood I am crying.”

Still, at least some were thrilled to welcome Joshua Bassett from High School Musical: the Musical: the Series on Disney+ into the fold, since he ended up performing Troy Bolton’s parts instead of Efron.

At least one user took the opportunity to remind everyone that actor Drew Seeley was the actual voice behind Troy Bolton for the songs of High School Musical’s first movie, including the iconic “Start of Something New” and “Breaking Free.” In fact, he even toured as Troy for the High School Musical: The Concert tour. True story.

HSM director Kenny Ortega told Deadline that Efron was genuinely excited to join the reunion and had a very good reason for skipping the singing bit. “We couldn’t reach Zac until late but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course,” Ortega said. “Everyone we reached out to was quick—and you’ll see it in their spirit and the way they come together from their homes. They recognize this is an opportunity to strengthen spirits for those joining us for the broadcast.” It seems like Efron just didn’t have enough rehearsal time!

As Troy Bolton would say…

The ‘High School Musical’ Cast—Including Zac Efron—Are Reuniting, and People Are Very Excited

If you’re trying to find some positive news amid this difficult time, look no further than all the pop-culture reunions happening. Next up: High School Musical. That’s right, all your favorites from East High School are getting back together, and they’re going to sing for you. And yes, that does include Zac Efron.

Deadline reports Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, and Lucas Grabeel have all agreed to participate “in one way or another” in The Disney Family Singalong, a star-studded music special to raise awareness for Feeding America amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which will air April 16 on ABC.

“I wanted to find something I can do to participate, and it was so great to be given the call and invited by ABC to join,” High School Musical director Kenny Ortega told Deadline. “It gave me a purpose to get up every morning. I feel really good that we have an opportunity to do something like this—it’s good medicine.”

Members of the HSM cast will perform (virtually and while practicing social distancing, obvi) “We’re All in This Together,” which is sure to be an internet favorite with fans. “We couldn’t reach Zac until late, but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course,” Ortega said. “Everyone we reached out to was quick—and you’ll see it in their spirit and the way they come together from their homes. They recognize this is an opportunity to strengthen spirits for those joining us for the broadcast.”

Ortega said that the song choice was definitely intentional given the current state of the country and world. “You’re hearing those words chanted out—I’ve been sent videos from doctors, orderlies, nurses, and medical professionals in masks and hospital gowns singing ‘We’re All in This Together’ in the hallways of hospitals,” he said. “It’s a really nice, fun coming-together of a lot of young people that are banding together under the lyrics of this song for the show.”

Ortega continued, “These artists that have come together are heroes. There are young people out there that look up to these people and have for a long time. To see them in their own living rooms and in their sweatpants hanging out with their families helps everyone realize there’s truth behind these words—we’re all in this together in various circumstances. We need to feel that company.”

Fans are very excited to see the gang back together again, even if it’s virtual.

The Disney Family Singalong, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, airs on ABC at 8 p.m. ET on April 16.

Ashley Tisdale Made Her Husband Christopher French Watch High School Musical for the First Time

It’s been over a decade since High School Musical made its iconic debut on the Disney channel, but that doesn’t mean cast members like Ashley Tisdale have stopped reliving the ride. The actor recently decided she wanted to introduce the franchise to her husband, composer Christopher French. She hilariously documented the night-in for fans, as she introduced French to the singular Sharpay Evans.

Tisdale posted several stories to her Instagram as French reacted to Evans’s big moments and scenes. (Tisdale was 21 when the first film came out.) “Does anybody know what this is?” she joked, referencing one of the opening hit songs from the musical. “I’m subjecting my husband to watch it. He’s never seen any of them.”

So what did French think of the singing, dancing, pink-loving, mean girl? At one point, Tisdale asked him, “Would you have dated me?” and French simply laughed in response. Tisdale later shared a photo of Evans and cracked, “Sharpay not your type, babe?” while including a crying-while-laughing emoji.

Overall, French doesn’t seem to be a new fan of the movies. He even admitted that he probably wouldn’t have watched the films when he was younger, prompting his wife to post a video captioned, “LAME! He wasn’t cool enough.” But the good news is that hardcore fans still adore the movies, and the cast has maintained their friendships from their time on set together. Most of the stars, with the exception of Zac Efron, filmed an onscreen reunion in 2016, and they’ve been seen at events together ever since. Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens are still incredibly close, serving as their friend Kim Hidalgo’s bridesmaids this summer. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat.

‘Let It Snow’ Is Basically a High School ‘Love Actually,’ and It’s Delightful

Netflix’s lineup of holiday entertainment continues this week with Let It Snow, a new rom-com that’s serving major Love Actually vibes. In fact, it’s basically a teen version of the beloved 2003 movie. Starring Kiernan Shipka, Joan Cusack, Isabela Moner, and Shameik Moore, among others, Let It Snow follows several intertwined stories, all of which take place on a snowy Christmas Eve in Laurel, Illinois. The frigid, unexpected weather has everyone in town out of sorts, leading to some very interesting events.

First, there’s Julie (Moner), who finds herself stuck on a train with Stuart Bale (Moore), a famous pop star touring nearby. Then, we have Tobin (Mitchell Hope), who’s harboring romantic feelings for his longtime best friend, Angie, aka The Duke (Shipka). And finally, we see two other good friends, Addie (Odeya Rush) and Dorrie (Liv Hewson), navigate their own love problems: Addie with her emotionally unavailable boyfriend, and Dorrie with a cheerleader from another school who happens to show up at the restaurant where she works. At the heart of these stories is Keon (Jacob Batalon), who just wants to DJ an epic Christmas Eve party. Eventually, he does—and that’s where all the aforementioned characters end up by the movie’s end. Make sense?

You can see the Love Actually parallels from that synopsis alone. Both movies feature several love stories that, at first, seem disconnected but ultimately morph together; they’re incredibly sentimental; and most important, the energy of the holiday season pulses throughout them. It’s exactly the kind of movie Shipka thinks people need to see right now.

“I think the world could always use a little bit more love,” she tells Glamour. “And I think holiday movies are very driven by love and happiness and fuzzy feelings.”

Moore feels similarly. “Everyone loves to unwind and watch something lighthearted to get them in the holiday mood,” he says. “There’s a lane and a mood and a time for it.”

But Let It Snow is more than just your standard Christmas movie, Shipka says. It has a real, beating heart—even without the tinsel.

“With all good Christmas movies, if you strip away the holiday [themes], there’s still a story underneath it,” she tells me. “And I think the holidays—Christmas Eve and Christmas, in the instance of our movie—it’s definitely a plot point, but it’s really not about that. It’s about these characters. I think people really love a good movie with an honest take on life.”

That being said, both Moore and Shipka are aware of the parallels Let It Snow has to Love Actually and think they’re valid. “Love Actually is a classic,” Shipka says. “Obviously the movies are formatted in similar ways. I totally get the comparisons. [But] I think our film is very obviously of the time. It’s very modern, and that’s what I love about it, is that it feels perfect for 2019.”

The 15 Best High Waisted Bikinis of 2019

A high-waisted bikini is great for the indecisive. It’s pretty much right in the middle between a standard two-piece and a full bathing suit. You can mix and match your tops and bottoms, swapping out individual pieces and wearing them with swim separates you already know and love. And, because of the higher waist, you get a little extra coverage, if you want it.

High-waisted bikinis are a classic—they’re reminiscent of the 1950s, but they never feel outdated or out of trend. And just like a great pair of high-waisted jeans, it looks great all the time. No wonder it’s still a top swim silhouette decades later.

Selena Gomez loves them. Taylor Swift loves them. And this season, you’ll love them, too. We’ve narrowed down our absolute favorite high-waisted bikinis for summer 2019, for all types of beach-goers.
