Fans Think Taylor Swift's 'Ready for It' Music Video Is a Dig at Calvin Harris

Taylor Swift’s “Ready for It” video hasn’t even come out yet, and the Internet is flooded with fan theories. It’s understandable why: The 10-second video teaser Swift dropped earlier this week is stuffed with imagery. There was lot to unpack, which means decoding the actual video will be even more complicated.

For now, though, two “Ready for It” hypotheses are dominating Swiftie chatter. We called out one of them on Tuesday: that Swift being nude in the video is a dig at Kanye West’s song “Famous.” The other involves yet another person Swift feuded with in 2016: her ex-boyfriend, Calvin Harris. There’s one particular image in the “Ready for It” teaser that several fans think is clear shade at the DJ.

It happens at the top of the trailer when Swift’s name appears in front of a dark thunderstorm backdrop as lightning bolts clash furiously. Those bolts, in some fans’ eyes, are a direct reference to Harris’ song “This Is What You Came For,” which features lightning bolts on the single cover art. See the parallels in the tweet, below:

Swift taking a swipe at Harris—and “This Is What You Came For,” specifically—would make total sense. After all, that song is the biggest point of contention between the former couple. Swift and Harris wrote the tune together, but she was originally credited under a pseudonym (Nils Sjöberg) so their relationship wouldn’t overshadow it. But all hell broke loose when the truth came out. Harris went on a Twitter rant against Swift, writing, “I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to bury like Katy ETC, but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.” We’re sure this is all coming back to you now.

This apparent diss also thematically fits in with Reputation, which seems to be Swift’s holistic response to the tabloid rumors that’ve plagued her for the past two years. Regardless, though, this video needs to drop, like, now. All these theories make the waiting excruciating.

Kendall Jenner Is Literally the Only Person in Fergie's New Music Video

Kendall Jenner isn’t just a star of Fergie’s new music video “Enchanté (Carine).” She’s the star, co-stars, and every and all supporting players.

The model appears in every scene, wearing in an impressive collection of outfits to make dinner party, walk the dog, and lip sync to Fergie’s new track. Just saying: It’s hard not to see parallels between the many Kendalls on-screen and the mountain of Taylors from Swift’s mega-hit video for “Look What You Made Me Do.” Maybe 2017 will be the year of the mimeograph music video?

Jenner isn’t the only young star to leave a mark on the video. Fergie’s son, Axl Jack Duhamel, has a credit on the song for adding his adorable 4-year-old vocals to the track. Though this music video marks a notable release from Fergie’s new visual album, “Double Dutchess,” this month’s headlines have focused on the musician’s personal life rather than her music. After an eight-year marriage, the singer recently announced she and Josh Duhamel are divorcing. The two released a joint statement explaining, “We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.”

This isn’t the first time Jenner and Fergie have collaborated on a music video. The model appeared in the 2016 video for The Black Eyed Peas’ “#WHERESTHELOVE ft. The World,” which focused on raising awareness of recent international and domestic acts of violence and featured celebrities, including Justin Timberlake, Usher, and DJ Khaled. Though Jenner’s cameo in the video is brief, it was likely great lip-synching practice for her latest Fergie collab.

Watch Taylor Swift Transform Into a Zombie for Her 'Look What You Made Me Do' Music Video

Let’s be honest: a fair number of us were already planning on dressing up as the zombie version of Taylor Swift from her “Look What You Made Me Do” music video for Halloween this year. After all, her look is one of the most iconic moments of 2017 so far. But for those of us unskilled in the special effects makeup department, it might prove difficult to recreate. Taylor gave us a little sneak peek into the making of her undead look in a YouTube video—and it honestly seems a little over-the-top, but hey, it’s for a good cause. (We’re surprised she didn’t change the lyrics to “I’m sorry, Taylor can’t come to the phone right now because she’s been in the makeup chair for 12 hours.”)

We’re sure there’s simpler ways to achieve the effect for Halloween, but T.Swift’s video look involved a ton of moss (all over) to get that freshly-arisen-from-the-grave effect, as well as prosthetics for her face, grayish blue contacts for creepy undead eyes, and that dress from “Out of the Woods.”

Check out the preview of Taylor’s transformation for yourself:

Now all you need is your own girl squad dressing up as every other version of Taylor, past and present: a quick roll call could definitely include “Teardrops On My Guitar” Taylor, Laying-in-a-Tub-Filled-With-Diamonds Taylor, and Snake Queen Taylor. (So many options.)

There’s no telling if we’ll see more of scary Taylor in her upcoming videos. If her recent AT&T commercial is any barometer, her cat-loving, cookie-dough-eating self is still very much alive and well. And her latest song, “Ready For It,” is definitely less dark than “LWYMMD.” That being said, we’re pretty sure we’ll see some symbolism-filled new looks from the new Taylor, too.

But it seems like we can work with the Taylors we’ve got for Halloween, anyway: T. Swift’s latest album, Reputation, isn’t set to drop until November 10.

Taylor Swift's Music Video Director Reveals the Meaning Behind 'Old Taylor'

PHOTO: Big Machine Records

If you have a pulse, you’ve undoubtedly heard Taylor Swift’s new song “Look What You Made Me Do,” in which she declares the “Old Taylor” is dead. The meaning behind this lyric is still a mystery. Fans originally thought it meant Swift was abandoning her old, smiley personality, but that went out the window when she appeared in an AT&T ad filled with cuddly cats and cookie dough. Perhaps the line is directed at the media: The “Old Taylor” sat back and ignored tabloids, but “New Taylor” is firing back in the form of an album where half her face is filled with newspaper print on the cover. Maybe it means she’s no longer going to wear her hair in loose curls.

Or maybe “Old Taylor” doesn’t mean anything at all—that’s what Joseph Kahn sort of suggests in his new interview with Variety. The director, who helmed the “Look What You Made Me Do” video, says that Swift is “consistent” in who she is—which basically means “Old Taylor” and “New Taylor” are the same.

“Taylor is Taylor,” Kahn said. “She’s so consistent in who she is. Her imaging may be changing depending on what the thematics of the art is that she’s producing, [but] the person remains the same. There’s a core person there that’s really a fantastic human being.”

In other words, Swift is doing what dozens of pop artists do every few years: She’s reinventing. This doesn’t mean she’s altering herself: She’s just adapting her public image to fit the story she’s telling. Madonna and Rihanna are pros at this—and now so is Swift. Her former self isn’t dead—just her former image.

It’s interesting many people think Swift is literally changing herself with this new music, like she’s “method singing” or something. This is a phenomenon I’ve noticed with female performers: Oftentimes, people can’t separate the work from the artist. Their public personas and real lives are inextricably linked, which is very frustrating. Female artists should be able to express themselves creatively without the world thinking there’s trouble or change in their personal lives. Sometimes, it really isn’t that deep.

A New Beyoncé Music Video Is Coming, So Get in Formation

Beyoncé has a habit of jumping back into the music industry when it desperately needs her. After a string of disappointing pop albums by all your faves in 2013—let’s not talk about Britney Jean—Beyoncé released her surprise, self-titled album and subsequently slayed America. Three years later, after the blissful high from Rihanna’s ANTI wore off, she blessed us with Lemonade. And now, rumor has it she’s doing it again. Right as Taylor Swift decided it was a good idea to start rapping, news breaks that a new Beyoncé music video might be on the way. Get in formation! Ring the alarm! Other Beyoncé lyric reference!

In a new interview with La Presse, acclaimed director Michel Gondry revealed that one of his upcoming projects is a “clip for a Beyoncé song.” Unfortunately for the BeyHive, though, that’s all he said. There’s no word yet on the song’s title, release date, or if it’s a single for a new album. It could easily just be a one-off or track for a movie, like “Check on It.” Sidebar: Remember “Check on It?” The song Beyoncé did for the 2006 Pink Panther remake, which she also starred in? What a time to be alive!

So why haven’t we been blessed with this mysterious Bey project yet, you ask? “[The video] hasn’t been released because she had her twins,” Gondry told La Presse. (Beyoncé welcomed Sir and Rumi Carter in June 2017.) “But the is finished and it’s very, very good, I think.”

We don’t even have to see the video to know it’s more than “very, very good.” This is Beyoncé we’re talking about, people. She makes music videos on her downtime just for shits and giggles, and they turn into viral sensations. (Please see: “7/11.”) The visuals on both Beyoncé and Lemonade literally transformed music video-making; this new clip will undoubtedly move the dial forward, again, in some way. Let the countdown—eh?—begin.

An Entire Music Festival Crowd Just Paid Their Birthday Respects to Beyoncé

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles Carter turns 36 today, which means the Beyhive is buzzing. There’s no word yet on how Bey, hubby Jay Z, or their three kids—Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir—are officially celebrating her big day; however, we do know that last night, the family was in Philly. The occasion? Budweiser’s Made In America Festival, where Jay Z headlined a set.

Not missing an opportunity to celebrate, Jay Z told the crowd, “Shout out to Beyoncé. Beautiful Bey is in the house tonight. Happy birthday, my love!” before leading everyone in singing the chorus from Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday.”

In video captured at the event, we can see Beyoncé smiling as the crowd properly celebrates the queen she is, with fellow former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams standing beside her. Earlier, Bey and Blue Ivy got their grooves on while Jay performed.

Beyoncé’s sister Solange was also a performer at the festival, which meant that basically the whole crew was together for what must be a very special birthday weekend.

Check it out:

Perhaps the person who most enjoyed the weekend, though, was Cardi B. The “Bodak Yellow” rapper got this picture out of the festival. In other words, she hath been anointed:

Beyoncé, a Houston native, made headlines earlier this week for her response to the destruction wrought by Hurricane Harvey. After initially posting her prayers for Texas on Instagram, the singer made a statement to the Houston Chronicle about her plans to help affected Houstonians through her BeyGOOD initiative.

Less importantly, she was also dragged into the sturm and drang over Taylor Swift’s new video.

Here’s hoping Beyoncé and her family have a wonderful weekend celebrating. Maybe we’ll get a party pic with Rumi and Sir’s inevitable new playmate, Serena Williams’ daughter? After all, if anyone’s going to have a power-clique birthday, it’s Queen B.
