Watch Prince Harry Surprise a Crowd by Bringing Meghan Markle on Stage


Maybe we should just start calling Meghan Markle and Prince Harry the Duke and Duchess of Heart-Eye Emojis, as they continue their reign as the most publicly affectionate royal couple. The latest of piece of evidence: Prince Harry bringing Markle out on stage after he gave a speech in celebration of WE Day UK, an initiative that celebrates young leaders and encourages them to take part in social change.

“I’m now going to try and drag my wife on stage,” the Duke of Sussex said before walking over to help Markle onto the stage while the crowd cheered loudly. As the Duchess of Sussex waved to the crowd, Harry said, “I am with you, and we are with you, now get to work!”

And, of course, there was hand-holding and adorable eye-gazing once Markle made it to the stage.

This event is one that is right up the Sussexes’ alley, seeing how much they both love empowering young people. “To be amongst all of you progressive, motivated, open minded, change-makers, is what gives me hope for the future,” Harry said in his speech. “Your optimism is inspiring — you see opportunities where other people see challenges; you seek solutions when others just focus on problems.” He went on to touch on issues ranging from mental health and climate change.

While Meghan didn’t take the mic, her presence was felt before she even took the stage. “Every day you are inundated with an overexposure of advertising and mainstream media, social media and endless comparisons, distorting the truth, and trying to manipulate the power of positive thinking. But you don’t let them sway you,” Harry said. “Because you don’t need to hide behind your device to share your voice. You confidently voice your opinions because you can embrace them proudly. As my wife often reminds me with one of her favorite quotes by Martin Luther King Jr: ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.'”

Well said, Your Royal Highness.

Senate Interns Hoping To See Taylor Swift Crowd Capitol Hill Building


Given the political climate in the country at the moment, it’s likely a stressful time to be an intern on Capitol Hill. So who can blame anyone on the Hill for getting a wee bit excited upon hearing a rumor that Taylor Swift would be at the Russell Senate Office building on Wednesday for a meeting?

The idea that the “Look What You Made Me Do” singer could be roaming the halls seemed viable enough. Even considering that, historically, she shies away from political conversation (to the point that she is often criticized for her silence). She was, after all, in Washington, D.C., as part of her Reputation tour.

“Very important news: Sources say Taylor Swift will be in Russell Senate office building at some point today for a meeting,” tweeted reporter Juliegrace Brufke.

Enter the Swift hunt frenzy. All it took was that rumor of her appearance to send interns and young staffers on mission to spot the singer.

Obviously, it was all documented on social media, with one journalist joking that “all work” had stopped.

Roll Call reported that some believed Swift was meeting with New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, but her office said that was not true. And Fox News got word that “high level sources on both sides of CapHill” said there was no “‘official’ expectation for Taylor Swift to appear at the Capitol complex” on Wednesday.

So it seems that Taylor Swift remains publicly apolitical when it comes to making moves on Capitol Hill. She has, of course, flexed her political muscle elsewhere, supporting victims of sexual assault in the past and donating to the March for Our Lives, writing on Instagram, “No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence. Or to a nightclub. Or to a concert. Or to a movie theater. Or to their place of worship.”

As for those staffers and interns, they didn’t go home empty-handed: Iconic actress and lifelong political activist Jane Fonda was in the building on behalf of the National Domestic Workers Alliance in partnership with the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas.

We’re glad at least somebody noticed.

An Entire Music Festival Crowd Just Paid Their Birthday Respects to Beyoncé


Beyoncé Giselle Knowles Carter turns 36 today, which means the Beyhive is buzzing. There’s no word yet on how Bey, hubby Jay Z, or their three kids—Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir—are officially celebrating her big day; however, we do know that last night, the family was in Philly. The occasion? Budweiser’s Made In America Festival, where Jay Z headlined a set.

Not missing an opportunity to celebrate, Jay Z told the crowd, “Shout out to Beyoncé. Beautiful Bey is in the house tonight. Happy birthday, my love!” before leading everyone in singing the chorus from Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday.”

In video captured at the event, we can see Beyoncé smiling as the crowd properly celebrates the queen she is, with fellow former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams standing beside her. Earlier, Bey and Blue Ivy got their grooves on while Jay performed.

Beyoncé’s sister Solange was also a performer at the festival, which meant that basically the whole crew was together for what must be a very special birthday weekend.

Perhaps the person who most enjoyed the weekend, though, was Cardi B. The “Bodak Yellow” rapper got this picture out of the festival. In other words, she hath been anointed:

Beyoncé, a Houston native, made headlines earlier this week for her response to the destruction wrought by Hurricane Harvey. After initially posting her prayers for Texas on Instagram, the singer made a statement to the Houston Chronicle about her plans to help affected Houstonians through her BeyGOOD initiative.

Less importantly, she was also dragged into the sturm and drang over Taylor Swift’s new video.

Here’s hoping Beyoncé and her family have a wonderful weekend celebrating. Maybe we’ll get a party pic with Rumi and Sir’s inevitable new playmate, Serena Williams’ daughter? After all, if anyone’s going to have a power-clique birthday, it’s Queen B.

This Singer Stopped His Show to Call Out a Sexual Assault in the Crowd

Music festivals are often the highlight of summer plans, but recently, there’s been increased attention on incidents of sexual assault that, sadly, often happen on site. The Bravalla Festival, a popular music festival in Sweden, has already been cancelled for 2018 after 27 sexual assaults were reported at this summer’s event. Meanwhile, other organizers are looking to create spaces just for women on the festival grounds—or “man-free” festivals altogether. Frankly, it’s terrible that things have gotten to that point—after all, the problem is with the assaulters, not the women.

But at a festival in the Netherlands on Friday night, one singer, Sam Carter, made the issue of sexual assault a visible and public one when he called out a “disgusting” sexual assault he’d witnessed in the crowd of his show with some choice words that made it clear that he wanted his show to be a safe space for all.

The Architects were performing at the Lowlands music festival when Carter spotted a man “grab at” the breast of a woman who was crowdsurfing. After the song ended, he paused to address the incident and let the crowd know that there was nothing OK about it.

“I’ve been going over in my f–king mind about whether I should say something or not about what I saw in that last song, and do you know what, I’m gonna f–king say it,” Carter told the crowd. “I saw a girl, a woman, crowdsurfing over here, and I’m not going to f–king point the piece of sh-t out who did it, but I saw you f–king grab at her boob. It is f—king disgusting, and there is no f—king place for that sh-t.”

The crowd seemed to be in agreement; they clapped and whistled their support before the singer continued. “It is not your f—king body,” he said, getting louder. “It is not your f—king body and you do not f—king grab at someone! Not at my f—king show!”

“If you feel like doing that again, walk out there and f–k off and don’t come back,” he said, indirectly addressing the culprit before adding: “Let’s keep this going, let’s keep this a f–king safe place for everybody, and let’s have a f–king good time.”

A video of Carter’s impassioned speech quickly went viral after it was shared on Twitter by the Dutch public radio channel NPO 3FM, and it got a huge response—particularly from those who took to the platform to express gratitude that Carter spoke out. (It’s probably clear from the quotes, but you might not want to crank the audio up over the office speakers.)

Many expressed their gratitude to Carter for speaking out:

It’s beyond awful that in 2017, men still feel like they’re entitled to women’s bodies—but hats off to Carter for stepping up and calling out the assault he saw. Here’s hoping that more organizers and people like him will continue fighting to make music festivals a safer environment for everyone.
