Oscars 2020: The 17 Biggest Memes & Moments of the Night

Come back here for all info on Oscar memes & moments 2020.

The 2020 Oscars went down on Sunday, February 9, and it was quite the show. While the nominees were predictable (and alarmingly non-diverse), the ceremony itself had some exciting moments—from Billie Eilish’s performance to the surprise Parasite sweep to, of course, the red-carpet fashion.

But don’t worry if you slept on Hollywood’s biggest night (it was three hours, after all): We have the highlights roundup for you right here. Read on for all the 2020 Oscar memes & moments you need to know about:

All the Jennifer Lopez Oscar snub memes. My personal favorite: This video tweet of a man carrying an Oscar podium with the caption, “Me stealing an Oscar to give it to J.Lo for Hustlers.”

Janelle Monáe’s opening performance. It was a dazzling song-and-dance presentation of all the year’s top movies. Billy Porter made an iconic cameo, as well.

Brad Pitt winning Best Supporting Actor. To no one’s surprise, he won for Best Supporting Actor—and got choked up during his acceptance speech.

All the Elsas singing “Into the Unknown” from Frozen. Idina Menzel was joined by women who voice Elsa from all over the world.

Bong Joon Ho winning Best Original Screenplay for Parasite. Several celebrities stood up when his win was announced. Parasite went on to win several other awards, as well, including Best Director (Joon Ho) and Best Picture.

Diane Keaton presenting. Her outfit was incredible. She almost dropped the envelope. We stan a relatable legend.

Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph presenting Best Production Design. Their bit was hilarious, naturally.

Billie Eilish’s face, at one point, in the crowd. An instant meme.

Chrissy Metz’s performance of “I’m Standing with You” from Breakthrough. It was nominated for Best Original Song.

Laura Dern winning Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story. It was an expected but wonderful win. She thanked her parents, both famous actors, in her acceptance speech.

Eminem performing “Lose Yourself.” It was great, don’t get me wrong, but it was a bit…I don’t know, confusing? Like, why this year? When 8 Mile came out in 2002? The bewildered celebrity reactions are all memes waiting to happen.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell presenting together. Absolute comedic gold.

Cynthia Erivo performing “Stand Up” from Harriet. Another Best Original Song nominee—and another stunning performance.

James Corden and Rebel Wilson dressing up as their Cats characters to present for Best Visuals Effects. A nod to the movie’s…erm, bizarre…art.

Hildur Guðnadóttir winning for Best Original Score. She is only the fourth female composer to win Best Score and the first since 1997. “To the girls to the women to the mothers to the daughters who hear the music bubbling within. Please speak up, we need to hear your voices,” she said in her speech.

Billie Eilish’s In Memoriam performance. She sang “Yesterday” by The Beatles, and it was incredible.

Olivia Colman presenting for Best Actor. “Winning an Oscar ages you,” she said, a self-deprecating jab at her newly-dyed silver hair. Can she please host everything?

Taylor Swift Loves Those ‘Drunk Taylor’ Memes As Much As You Do

The internet has a new favorite meme—at least for the moment—and it’s called Drunk Taylor.

It all started with a few videos that popped up online from a party Taylor Swift threw at Beauty & Essex in Los Angeles to celebrate “her recent music success,” according to E!. She invited the collaborators and stars of her “You Need to Calm Down” video, including Laverne Cox, Hayley Kiyoko, the Haim sisters, and RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant A’keria Davenport, to the event.

And in a few behind-the-scenes videos from the party, Swift is seen dancing around to her own music as well as Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own.” She’s also overheard saying, “I fckking love Cardi B” in one video—which makes us long for a collaboration project.

Now, it’s not clear if Swift is actually intoxicated, but you know how the internet is. People took in her mussed hair and carefree dance moves and the Drunk Taylor meme was born.

Naturally, the Swifties were very into this version of their favorite singer. “The hair flip is a MOOD ?????????? #drunktaylor is the cutest and makes her even more relatable which I didn’t even know was possible but apparently it is,” one person wrote. “Taylor Swift drunk shimmying is my new aesthetic,” another tweeted. Others just took the footage and ran with it in all sorts of directions.

But lest you think any of this bothered Swift, she embraced the trending topic in her own social media posts. “Threw a party to celebrate with the people who made the ME! & YNTCD videos with me- and we had so much fun that ‘Drunk Taylor’ is trending on Twitter. CHEERS. ????,” she wrote.

Swift’s next album, Lover, arrives on August 23. But at least we have all these amazing dance moves to tide us over until then.

Leonardo DiCaprio Got Hit in the Face With a Volleyball, and the Memes Are A+

We’ve seen Leonardo DiCaprio battle a grizzly bear, take on the mob, and try to survive a massive iceberg collision. However, the actor may have met his biggest adversary yet this week—a volleyball.

On Tuesday, TMZ published a slew of images of DiCaprio just trying to relax and enjoy the summer in Malibu by playing a friendly game of volleyball with his pals. Unfortunately, not even the actor’s decades-long career and long-awaited Academy Award could save him from the wrath of the volleyball. TMZ caught the exact moment when the ball smacked DiCaprio directly in the face, to both the horror and the delight of the internet. These photos are more tragic than the “I’ll never let go, Jack” scene in Titanic—also, we hope Leo is okay—but we’re here for the memes, which began pouring out of Twitter almost immediately.

But first, please enjoy the photo that started it all:

DOBN, RMBI/Backgrid

“I would have never thought that @LeoDiCaprio could be an accurate representation of me in high school attempting PE,” one person tweeted. “Leonardo DiCaprio getting smacked in the face by a volleyball sums up how my year is going in one image,” someone else wrote.

And of course, there were also a ton of Wilson references, since the whole scene looks like a remake of Tom Hanks’s Castaway with the volleyball starring as the villain. “Finally, @tomhanks gets revenge on @LeoDiCaprio for #CatchMeIfYouCan by sending Wilson after him,” one person joked.

The funniest part of it all is that DiCaprio seems to actually really like volleyball. The Daily Mail reported that he’d been spotted playing with Ansel Elgort at Malibu Beach last year, and a few weeks later he challenged Scott Eastwood to a match. Maybe he’s just rusty since it’s the beginning of summer? Regardless, let’s just hope he and the volleyball work things out ASAP.

Meryl Streep's Facial Reactions at the U.S. Open Have Spawned the Best Memes

Meryl Streep’s Oscar-winning face has just created a whole new batch of memes. After becoming immortalized in the hallowed halls of meme history for cheering on Debbie Reynolds at the 2015 SAG Awards (a moment she re-created at the 2018 Oscars), not to mention the countless Miranda Priestly GIFs that rule Twitter with an impeccablymanicured fist, the iconic actress has once again spawned another meme—this time from the U.S. Open.

According to Time, it all went down during the men’s final on Sunday between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martín del Potro. The cameras zoomed in on Streep’s face during their super-intense match, and the results are absolutely priceless. ESPN and SB Nation described it best: Gasping with the suspense of it all, hands pressed against her cheeks, she was pretty much the IRL embodiment of the scream emoji (?). Naturally, the Internet couldn’t get enough, and it pretty much took over Twitter for the duration of the match. (According to HuffPost, Streep soon became aware of herself becoming a meme in real time, and cracked open a cold one just for the cameras.)

Below, here are some of the best memes created from Streep’s reactions:

Remarkably, this isn’t the only Streep meme from this year, or even over the past month. Back in August a picture from the Big Little Lies season two set took the Internet by storm. Truly a work of art, it features Reese Witherspoon (in character as Madeline Martha Mackenzie) tossing a massive ice cream cone at Streep (who’s playing Perry’s mother). Oh, Meryl. Never stop.

Rihanna Responded to Memes of Her Arguing with Her Boyfriend By Trolling Us All

The internet should know by now, Rihanna is the reigning queen of…well, everything. That especially includes memes, which Rihanna has been the subject of many times before—including one circulated within the past 24 hours centered around a series of photos of Rihanna and her boyfriend Hassan Jameel engaged in what many assumed was a fight. The joke’s on everyone else, though, because Rihanna responded by trolling us all.

BadGalRiRi posted a photo on Instagram of a female lion roaring a male lion into submission in a corner, a winking nod to the photos of her raising her hand while talking to Jameel as he leaned away from her. The caption? “When u think u know more bout soccer ??? #worldcup2018.”

Whether or not Rihanna and Jameel were arguing about soccer, Rihanna is an undisputed World Cup connoisseur. The last one, in 2014, she cheered on Germany from the sidelines in Brazil, in between hanging out with the team, flashing her bra when they beat Argentina, and actually holding the team’s trophy, which, no, is not a thing that normal celebrities get to do.

Rihanna actually broke FIFIA protocol by holding the trophy—not to mention kissing it and taking selfies with it—as only the winners and heads of state are allowed to hold them, according to Pulse. But, because she’s Rihanna, no consequences ever materialized. She wasn’t the only one who did, though, as The Daily Mail also published pictures of Sami Khedira’s girlfriend Lena Gercke hugging it.

As for her relationship with Jameel, Rihanna confirmed that she was in a relationship back in May, telling Vogue, “I used to feel guilty about taking personal time, but I also think I never met someone who was worth it before.” While she didn’t confirm her boyfriend’s identity, she has been linked to Jameel since June of 2017. That month they were spotted kissing in Ibiza, where they were later photographed on a subsequent date. Last month, though, it was rumored that they had broken up because Rihanna “gets tired of men sometimes.”

True or not, Rihanna has admitted how exhausting relationships can be before, telling British Vogue in 2011, “I mean it is nice being single in one way, because a relationship can feel like a chore, and that’s not good. That’s not what I need.” Rihanna needs all of the energy she can get right now, at least until this Sunday, when the final World Cup game between France and Croatia airs.
