Melania Trump Wore an All-White Suit for State of the Union


All eyes were on First Lady Melania Trump as she entered the chamber to watch her husband deliver his first State of the Union to a joint session of Congress. In a break from tradition, she arrived separately from President Trump—the Obamas and George W. Bush and his wife Laura both rode together from the White House. Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that this was for “no reason other than she can greet the guests and he can go straight in.” Still, eyebrows were raised.

And then there’s Melania’s fashion selection: an all-white Christian Dior pantsuit and Dolce & Gabbana blouse. I don’t know about you but when I think all-white pantsuit, or any pantsuit for that matter, my mind immediately travels to one Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Of course, HRC doesn’t have that market cornered and the First Lady is free to wear anything she chooses, but again…eyebrows were raised.

The look also evokes images of the Democratic women who chose to wear white to the president’s joint session last year to symbolize the suffragette movement and women’s rights. It’s also in stark contrast to many Democrats decision to attend in black this year.

Of course, there’s no way to know if Melania Trump is making a statement or if she just really likes that suit. But clothing has become a significant marker of the #MeToo and Time’s Up moment which brings even more scrutiny to every sartorial choice. And Twitter sure had some fun speculating calling her “Resistance curious” and a “suffragette, Hillary Clinton, and Kesha #MeToo backup singer all in one.”

If only she tweeted as much as her husband, we might someday know the real story.

Melania Trump's Spokesperson Has Addressed Those Infidelity Rumors


Melania Trump hasn’t had a huge public presence since she became First Lady just over a year ago. And rumors surrounding the state of her marriage to Donald Trump have also taken up significant space in the national press, from her delay moving into the White House to viral videos showed her appearing to swat Donald’s hand away when he tried to take it.

Most recently, the publication of Michael Wolff’s book Fire and Fury earlier this month brought these rumors back to the spotlight, as it included the detail that Donald and Melania have separate bedrooms. Then, the Wall Street Journal reported that Donald Trump’s lawyer had arranged to pay adult-film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 just one month before the 2016 election so she’d remain quiet about an affair between her and Trump. And then InTouch released a 2011 interview with Daniels detailing the affair. Wolff’s book also triggered some speculation that Trump was having an affair with U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, which she outright denied on Friday.

Now, Melania’s official director of communications, Stephanie Grisham, has spoken out—presumably on Melania’s behalf—about the rumors that Donald’s been unfaithful.

“BREAKING:The laundry list of salacious & flat-out false reporting about Mrs. Trump by tabloid publications & TV shows has seeped into “main stream media” reporting. She is focused on her family & role as FLOTUS – not the unrealistic scenarios being peddled daily by the fake news.”

Given Melania’s history of laying low publicly, this may be the closest we come to a statement from FLOTUS herself on the matter.

Meryl Streep Wants Ivanka and Melania Trump to Speak Up


In a joint interview with Tom Hanks published in The New York Times Wednesday, Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep got candid and shared her thoughts on sexual misconduct in Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein, and the silence of Melania and Ivanka Trump amid the #MeToo movement.

The interview revolved around Streep and Hank’s new movie The Post, though Times reporter Cara Buckley shifted the conversation to the backlash Streep faced last year for not speaking out against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein more quickly, after many actresses came forward and accused him of sexual misconduct. Although Streep released a statement about Weinstein three days after the allegations surfaced, many criticized her for initially remaining quiet.

In response to Buckley’s questions about her silence, Streep said, “I don’t want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.”

Streep explained that after first hearing about the Weinstein scandal, she “went home deep into my own life.” Then she heard the public was waiting for her to respond.

“I don’t have a Twitter thing or – handle, whatever. And I don’t have Facebook. I really had to think. Because it really underlined my own sense of cluelessness, and also how evil, deeply evil, and duplicitous, a person he was, yet such a champion of really great work,” she said.

Streep has publicly criticized Donald Trump before, notably during a Golden Globes speech last year in which she called the president out for mocking a disabled reporter. Her comments about Melania and Ivanka reflect wider criticism that the First Lady and First Daughter haven’t said enough about sexual harassment. Ivanka’s few comments on the topic came during a speech Tokyo, in which she said that “all too often, our workplace culture fails to treat women with appropriate respect” and that harassment should “never be tolerated.” Neither of them has addressed allegations of harassment that Trump faces.

Buckley also asked Hanks what he thought of the #MeToo movement, and he admitted that he too had participated in crude language worthy of a baseball locker room while at work. Streep piped up that there “shouldn’t be the idea of a locker room.”

“The payload is unloaded on women, because that’s the last group it’s kind of OK to demean, degrade,” she said.

Melania Trump Wore a $5,500 Erdem Dress on New Year's Eve


President Donald Trump and his family held a New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago, their private residence in Palm Beach, Florida (which is sometimes referred to as the “Winter White House”). For the occasion, First Lady Melania Trump opted for an embroidered mid-length dress from British label Erderm.

The pale-pink Emery dress, from the brand’s Pre-Fall 2017 collection, is covered in paillettes from its high neck to the mid-calf hem. Clusters of embroidered flowers are scattered throughout the ’40s-inspired silhouette. The style originally retailed for $5,500 at luxury retailer Browns, but is currently on sale for $2,201.26. (It’s sold out on Erdem’s website.)

Though Erdem released the dress with a periwinkle-colored belt, Melania removed it for the New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago. The resulting look, then, was more ’80s than its original iteration. She finished the look off with pointed-toe stilettos in a matching shade of pink.

This Erdem style is in line with the First Lady’s penchant for dramatic sleeves. (There were the equally draped, bell-shaped ones that made an appearance in that weird viral video of her watching ballerinas, and the puffy sculpted ones affixed to a $2,950 neon-fuschia dress by Delpozo that she wore to give a speech at the United Nations.) What’s more, another member of the First Family wore the designer earlier this year: Ivanka Trump chose a midi dress from the brand’s Fall 2017 collection to give a speech in India, per Footwear News.

Trump’s Erdem gown, with its four-figure price tag, is still available for purchase at Browns.

Melania Trump Got Dragged For Her Christmas Selfie


Due to the fact that she’s married to our current president, Melania Trump is often the center of controversy—some of it serious, some of it silly. Her latest controversy (if you can call it that) might just blow all the others out of the water, however, as it has to do with a selfie. Yep, a selfie—and a selfie taken on Christmas, at that.

In the photo, the First Lady can be seen looking… amused, I guess?… with raised eyebrows, a rehearsed expression, and a Snapchat filter. Most of us would consider it a throwaway selfie and not put much stock in it, but it’s the Internet we’re dealing with, so folks reacted. Some compared her to the previous FLOTUS, while other commenters pointed out the irony of someone from the Trump family wishing folks a Merry Christmas. Some said it showed a lack of class, while others thought it looked like a Tinder profile pic.

Though we’re used to seeing the FLOTUS’s face, we actually rarely see her face in a selfie, as pointed out by The Cut. In fact, her Christmas selfie was the first selfie in a year, and it’s a heavily edited one, at that. She also went as far as to caption the photo with the hashtag “Merry Christmas,” a phrase that her own husband has a long, strange history with. In fact, just this year, he tweeted, “People are proud to be saying Merry Christmas again. I am proud to have led the charge against the assault of our cherished and beautiful phrase. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!”

Naturally, people weren’t exactly feeling jolly feelings upon seeing the photo. Try as she might, with the Snapchat filter that included a Santa hat, conjured-up reindeers, and a few sprinklings of snow, the First Lady couldn’t get the country to feel quite as festive as she apparently was in the snap.

Melania Trump Wants to Spend Christmas on a 'Deserted Island' and Twitter Is Cracking Up


For each of the president’s assertions that Melania Trump is, in fact, perfectly happy to be living in the White House and serving as First Lady, there’s a curious interview answer or “accidentally” favorited tweet from the FLOTUS herself that seem to prove otherwise. Most recently, while visiting the Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Melania answered holiday-themed questions from kids, and one of her answers, in particular, has revived the #FreeMelania movement, leaving many worried about Melania’s happiness. And, of course, it set up plenty of jokes on Twitter.

In a video captured by NBC News, 10-year-old Andy asks Trump where in the world she would most like to spend the holidays. “I would spend my holidays on a deserted island, a tropical island, with my family,” she replies with a laugh.

Twitter users immediately pounced on the video. Some poked fun at Trump’s seemingly only adding the part about her family as an afterthought. “‘Mrs. trump what do you want for chris the MOST’ ‘a coma….…. with uh, my family,'” one person wrote. Others perceived the answer as proof that Trump is extremely unsatisfied with her current situation. “This isn’t an answer. This is her escape plan,” one such Twitter user wrote. Most Twitter jokers, however, quipped that they, too, would very much like for the Trump family to retreat to a faraway deserted island. “Melania Trump wants to spend the holidays on a deserted island. Can she take her husband with her? And leave him there forever?” one tweeted.

Trump first seemingly revealed that she was less than pleased with being the FLOTUS to Donald Trump‘s POTUS earlier this year, when the official @MelaniaTrump Twitter account liked a tweet—her second-ever like—that read “Seems the only #Wall @realDonaldTrump’s built is the one between him and @FLOTUS #Melania #Trump” alongside a GIF of Trump frowning as soon as her husband looked away. The tweet has since been unliked, and a day later, Melania’s communications director Stephanie Grisham told People that the First Lady was not aware of the fave.

Last month, the president attempted to put the rumors of his wife’s unhappiness to rest. “Melania, our great and very hard working First Lady, who truly loves what she is doing, always thought that ‘if you run, you will win.’ She would tell everyone that, ‘no doubt, he will win.’ I also felt I would win (or I would not have run) – and Country is doing great!” Donald Trump tweeted on November 28, likely in response to a Vanity Fair article published earlier that week claiming that Melania “didn’t want this come hell or high water.”

The truth, it seems, is in the tweets—but whose tweets, exactly?
