Ava DuVernay, Kristen Stewart, and 80 More Women Just Took Part in a Powerful Protest at Cannes

Ava DuVernay, Kristen Stewart, Jane Fonda, Marion Cotillard, and Salma Hayek are among the 82 women who took part in a powerful protest gesture at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday to highlight how difficult it is for women to climb the professional ladder in the film industry. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the group walked up the steps leading to the festival’s Théâtre Debussy, paused midway, and silently faced the central Palais building.

Actress Cate Blanchett, who is this year’s competition jury president, and Belgian film director Agnès Varda also presented a joint statement:

“On these steps today stand 82 women representing the number of female directors who have climbed these stairs since the first edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. In the same period 1,688 male directors have climbed these very same stairs. In the 71 years of this world-renowned festival there have been 12 female heads of its juries. The prestigious Palme d’Or has been bestowed upon 71 male directors—too numerous to mention by name—but only two women, Jane Campion, who is with us in spirit, and Agnès Varda, who stands with us today,” said Blanchett.

“These facts are stark and undeniable. Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise. As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these stairs today as a symbol of our determination and commitment to progress. We are writers, producers, directors, actresses, cinematographers, talent agents, editors, distributors, sales agents and all involved in the cinematic arts. We stand in solidarity with women of all industries,” they continued.

They then read a list of powerful demands:

“We will expect our institutions to actively provide parity and transparency in their executive bodies and safe environments in which to work. We will expect our governments to make sure that the laws of equal pay for equal work are upheld. We will demand that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so that they can best reflect the world in which we actually live. A world that allows all of us behind and in front of the camera to thrive shoulder to shoulder with our male colleagues. We acknowledge all of the women and men who are standing for change. The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let’s climb.”

The dramatic gesture was organized by 5050×2020, a French equality movement, and took place just before the premiere of Girls of the Sun, a film by Eva Husson. Husson is the only French female director in the competition this year, and she told Vanity Fair that it’s critical to initiate conversations around gender inequality in film.

“It’s high time. It’s healthy. It’s scary. It’s exploding in the face of a lot of people,” she said. “The patriarchy has not seen it coming so they feel really threatened by it. It’s a huge paradigm shift.”

The festival has been reckoning with ways to address issues of sexual assault, particularly because Harvey Weinstein allegedly assaulted or harassed multiple women during the festival in the past. As a response to the Weinstein allegations, Cannes worked with the French government to launch a hotline where women could report sexual assault or harassment at the event.

But many people have pointed out that Cannes still needs to figure out its own gender gap issues. This year, only three of the 21 directors competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or prize are women. The festival also faced backlash for including a film by Lars von Trier, the Danish director who had been banned from the festival for seven years after making anti-Semitic remarks and whose production company has been accused of sexual harassment.

After Saturday’s dramatic statement, women will continue staging acts to call attention to gender disparity. On Monday, Vanity Fair also reports that women are planning to ask members of the Directors’ Fortnight and Cannes Critics’ Week panel to sign a pledge that calls for more inclusion and diversity.

Kristen Bell Shares the Anxiety Advice She'd Give to Her Younger Self

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in honor of that, the Child Mind Institute has collaborated with celebrities and activists to share the kind of advice they could’ve used when they were younger. Kicking off this very special #MyYoungerSelf campaign is Kristen Bell, who has been open in the past about the anxiety and depression she’s experienced since she was 18 years old.

On Tuesday, the Child Mind Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and young adults with mental health and learning disorders, released a video in which Bell offers her past self a few pieces of very valuable advice about embracing every aspect of her personality and no longer comparing herself to others.

“Don’t be fooled by this game of perfection that humans play. Because Instagram and magazines and TV shows, they strive for a certain aesthetic, and everything looks so beautiful, and people seem like they don’t have any problems, but everyone’s human. Everyone has problems. Everyone feels yucky on the inside sometimes,” Bell says in the video. “You deserve to feel just as beautiful on the days you wear no makeup, and the days you don’t shower, and the days you feel like you’re depressed. And you have an obligation to take care of yourself from the inside out, because that’s how you can truly feel beautiful.”

The 37-year-old goes on to encourage her younger self (and all others watching) to seek help if they need it. “You are not alone,” Bell says. “Never feel embarrassed or ashamed about who you are. There are plenty of things to feel embarrassed or ashamed about. If you forget your mom’s birthday, feel embarrassed about that! If you are prone to gossiping, feel ashamed about that. But never feel embarrassed or ashamed about the uniqueness that is you.” She added, “Because there are people out there to help. And we’re all just human. And you can do it.”

Throughout the month of May, stars like Sarah Silverman, James Van Der Beek, Gabrielle Union, and Brittany Snow will join Bell in getting candid about their own struggles, all for the purpose of eliminating the stigma attached to mental illness.

“These actors, athletes, authors, and influencers are helping to eradicate the stigma that keeps the one in five young people who struggle with a mental health or learning disorder from getting help and reaching their potential,” Harold S. Koplewicz, MD, founder and president of the Child Mind Institute, said in a statement. “#MyYoungerSelf represents our society, whether you’re famous or not, coming together to get these kids the help they need.”

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's Kids Walked in on Them Having Sex

Of all of the celebrity couples, A Bad Moms Christmas actress Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are probably one of the most relatable—and transparent about the ups and downs of life in a relationship. They argue over how to furnish their home; they get flustered when they meet their celebrity crushes; and they fight like any other married couple. And in a moment that’s beyond relatable for a solid number of moms and dads, their kids have walked in on them in the middle of them getting it on. Bell was a guest on The Talk on Friday, and during one of the show’s segments, she was asked what the most embarrassing thing her kids have walked in on her and Shepard doing was. There’s pretty much one single answer that springs to mind for this for most parents, and without skipping a beat, Bell said, “Oh, they’ve walked in on us having sex.”

But they didn’t let it turn into a big deal: “That’s how they were made, it’s OK,” she told the hosts.

When another host asked how they reacted, Bell replied, “Well, we didn’t, like, continue…we sort of just went like, ‘Hey, what’s up? What do you need? What do you need?”

Then they told the kids that they were going to “nap” for a few more minutes. Yep…just napping.

Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell Just Got Matching Haircuts

Maybe it’s because we see it so rarely, but it’s pretty addictive to watch celebrities make hair decisions with their friends. It’s just so relatable—like a throwback to when your friend group would go in on a pack of Sun-In and streak everyone’s hair just slightly orange (that bad decision was universal, right? Right??). Those DIY dye jobs may have ended up only so-so, but regardless, they’re good memories. So when friends like Busy Philipps and Michelle Williams made the tipsy decision to dye Williams’ hair pink, we couldn’t look away. And today, we got some equally riveting intel on a new, friendship-inspired pair of celebrity haircuts. Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell just got matching bobs, and they look so good.

Chalk it up to friendship, having both of their hairstylists around, or cabin fever while promoting their new movie, A Bad Moms Christmas, but Bell and Kunis are now the celebrity equivalent of the matching girls emoji. Bell posted a shot last night of her and Kunis’ new styles, along with the caption, “Friendship haircuts.????.”

Gone are the days of long, mermaid-y beach waves and floor-sweeping extensions. These days every celebrity is going shorter, and both of their new cuts prove the point. Naturally, we did some sleuthing to find out just how identical their new styles really are (or if this was just a well-timed incident of both stars already having pretty short hair, like when you show up in the same outfit as someone and have to make the obligatory “twins!” joke). On Kunis’ end, she did in fact just get a haircut from her stylist, Renato Camparo.

Per his caption, they went for an asymmetrical ’60s-inspired bob, complete with sharply angled ends (but keeping the blunt aspect of Kunis’ last cut). Bell’s change is slightly more subtle.

From the photos that Bell, her hairstylist Jenny Cho, and her makeup artist Simone Siegl posted, we can glean that she might have gotten a trim (we weren’t kidding about the sleuthing). It’s still in the familiar territory of the haircut that Bell’s had for the past few years, but revamped into a shaggy, gently tousled look. If it ain’t broke, you know the drill. And looking like that, it definitely isn’t broken.

Watch Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn Hilariously Review Kids Toys

When you throw Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn in a room together and ask them to discuss what it’s like to be a kid, you’re going to get an ab workout just from laughing so hard. These are, after all, the same women who made grocery shopping funny in Bad Moms.

So in order to get into the holiday spirit early, we gathered a selection of the finest children’s toys for these A Bad Moms Christmas stars to review.Right off the bat, the women were not fans of Sweet Tears Baby (as you can tell by their faces in the photo above). Bell even went so far as to call the doll a murderer. Note to self: Avoid that doll at all costs. Holiday Barbie, meanwhile, went over a little better with the crew. Still, they thought she would look better with a hamburger. But, then again, so would everyone. The Furreal Roarin’ Tiger was the clear winner among the group. The women all thought their kids would love it, and Kunis, a grown woman, couldn’t stop petting it.

Watch, below:

A Bad Moms Christmas, the sequel to last summer’s hit Bad Moms, comes out November 1 and pays tribute to all of the hard-working moms who try to make the holidays magical for their families. “Christmas is a magical time, full of wonderful and exciting joy. A time for making lasting memories with family and friends,” Kunis narrates in the movie’s trailer. “But do you know the secret behind what makes Christmas so special? Moms. Moms working their asses off cooking, wrapping, decorating, and shopping.” We co-sign that.

Kristen Bell 'Literally Saved' 'Frozen' Co-Star Josh Gad's Family From Hurricane Irma

PHOTO: Dan MacMedan/WireImage

As Hurricane Irma makes its way toward southern Florida this weekend, people are doing what they can to protect themselves and their families. And America’s Sweetheart Kristen Bell is doing her part to help. She’s filming Like Father in Orlando right now, where evacuees from the state’s coastal areas are fleeing, and bunkering down at Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, where she’s staying while she films.

On Friday, she posted a picture of her last run for Irma supplies: “Last run to the store for #irma hurricane holdover prep while bracing down in orlando- we didn’t have the option to leave so here we are,” she wrote. “Just doing our best and trying to stay positive but cautious, and trying to help those who need help prepping. Every person i passed today was assisting someone else- #neighborshelpingneighbors – it was beautiful to see. Sad that a hurricane has to bring out the best in everyone- but happy that the community will be holding hands through this. Im grateful to Gary and the team at @swandolphin in epcot for helping us feel safe while we get through this together.”

But Bell also gave back to some very special people in need: she was able to swing a room for Frozen co-star and Florida native Josh Gad’s “entire family”—niece and nephews included. “So @kristenanniebell literally saved my parents and my entire family tonight from #hurricaneirma,” Gad wrote on Instagram. “When they were stranded in Florida, she got them a hotel room at her hotel in Orlando and saved them, my brothers, my sister-in-law and niece and nephew. They don’t make them like this girl. Thank you Kristin. You are truly an angel sent from above. And thank you @ewablueeyes for bother her when I asked you not to!!!!”

He also took to Twitter to share the news. “No joke,” Gad tweeted on Friday. “@IMKristenBell just literally saved my parents, my brothers and entire family from #HurricaineIrma – you are an angel. I adore you.”

Way to rock that #neighborshelpingneighbors philosophy, Kristen.
