Everything We Know About Skims, Kim Kardashian's Solutionwear Line

As is par for the course with other Kardahsian business ventures, the launch of Kim Kardashian West’s solutionswear line has been both highly anticipated and comes with its share of controversy. But as of today, SKIMS has finally launched, is available for purchase, and it may just become the most successful Kardashian brand to date.

“I think all the other business I’ve had has lead me up to that moment where I feel totally confident saying this is what we’re doing and…if you wear shapewear you will love this,” said Kardashian West earlier this summer at the preview for her “solutionwear”—not shapewear, but more on that later. The debut collection will not only feature underwear, bras, shorts, and bodysuits that its creator swears by and wears every day, it also includes pieces that are intended to be worn out as the main event, as well.

As Kardashian West said, SKIMS is unlike any brand that’s come before, both solutionswear- and Kardashian-wise. Below, everything we know—and what to expect from the actual product.

SKIMS is Kardashian West’s true passion.

“I feel like I’ve been designing shapewear for 15 years,” Kardashian West said of her new company, explaining the customization process she’d go through, prior to creating her own line. “Every time I’d travel I’d bring sets of shapewear with scissors and a needle and a thread.” She explained how she’d alter pieces to fit under tricky silhouettes and dye shapewear with teabags to achieve a hue that matched her skin (a process she’s documented on social media).

“This is Kim’s true passion,” says SKIMS’s VP of Marketing, Julia Collier-Ungano. “She’s truly touched every single piece, wear tested everything. I’ve truly never seen anything like it.”

The brand got off to a rocky start.

Initially intended to launch earlier this summer, Kardashian West pushed back the line’s debut in order to rename it. The original name, Kimono, was accused of cultural appropriation. (Daisaku Kadokawa, the mayor of Kyoto, personally wrote to the reality star and entrepreneur to express his concern over the use of a word and garment so significantly tied to Japanese culture.) Eventually, Kardashian West listened and changed course. “My fans and followers are a huge inspiration to me–I’m always listening to their feedback and opinions, and am so grateful they shared their ideas for a new brand name,” she shared on Instagram announcing SKIMS.

SKIMS is prioritizing inclusivity.

At launch, SKIMS’s sizing runs from XXS to 4XL (with some additional pieces available in 5XL). It’ll also offer nine different options for nude shades.

People Are Mommy-Shaming Kim Kardashian Because of North's Earrings Now

When you’re as famous as Kim Kardashian and living your life as publicly as she and the rest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan do, some controversies are to be expected. Of course, some of them the family brings on themselves. (See: cornrows. But others seem to be a totally avoidable product of the quick-to-react outrage culture that’s basically just daily life on social media.

A certain segment of people is very invested in all the wrong ways celebrities are raising their kids, which they mostly judge based on a photo posted on social media. Kardashian, her sister Khloé, and their pal Chrissy Teigen have all been known to shut down mommy-shaming trolls in the past—which is great, because moms have enough to deal with, celebrity or not.

The latest Kim K “drama” comes after the star posted a sweet picture with her 6-year-old daughter, North, where they were pinky-swearing to be be “besties for life.” Adorable, right? Not to some followers and commenters who didn’t like that North was wearing giant hoop earrings in the photo.

Almost immediately, the judge-y comments started flowing in. “Cute but those giant hoops for a little girl ?? She’s not even 11 yet ??‍♀️,” one person wrote. “Ok I never say anything bad regarding anyone’s kids, but, North has no business wearing hoops that big at what, 6? They’re gonna pull on her little holes,” another commented. “Why is she wearing hoop earrings??? She doesn’t look like a little girl,” yet another commenter wrote.

Others jumped to Kardashian’s defense. “Kim isn’t wearing earrings, so I assume she took hers off to let North wear them for fun. She (North) probably asked. Her ear will be fine bc she probably didn’t have them on long,” one commented. “Y’all do realize she’s North’s mom and if she allows her to wear hoops oh damn well! Y’all be acting like y’all perfect parents!” another said.

“Here come all the ‘perfect moms’ trying to shame the next ???,” one person astutely pointed out.

Plus, as Cosmo pointed out, it seems like these are Khloé’s earrings, and North is just playing dress-up for a moment with some fun, big, shiny jewelry of her auntie’s. Ultimately, though, it’s probably a good idea to leave parenting North up to her parents and her parents alone.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Average Americans, Ate at Cheesecake Factory Twice in a Row

Kim Kardashian going to—or even just talking about—chain restaurants is one of my favorite pop-culture subcategories. What? You didn’t realize this was a thing? Well, you’ve been missing out, my friend. I’ll always remember when she opened up about her Chipotle order a few years back, plainly saying, “I always get a Diet Coke from the fountain with LOTS of ice. If they don’t put enough ice in it, I die.” Or when she confirmed that she “ALWAYS” orders a side of small fries at McDonald’s. Always. She probably “dies” if that also doesn’t happen.

So you can imagine my pure elation when news came out today (August 28) that Kardashian, Kanye West, and their children dined at the Cheesecake Factory two times in a row while visiting Dayton, Ohio over the weekend. (They were there for West’s Sunday Services.) According to People magazine, the famous family had several dishes while eating at the popular chain, including a slice of its famous Strawberry Cheesecake.

A fan named Kayla snapped photos of the Kardashian-Wests getting their cheesecake on, and they’re as iconic as you’d expect. Check them out for yourself, below.

I’m not sure what piece of information is more delicious: the fact that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West ate at Cheesecake Factory at all, or the fact they went twice. Have you ever been to Cheesecake Factory? It’s incredible, yes, but so, so filling. It’s the type of place even the most devoted chain restaurant-goers can only handle eating at once in a while. So to go there back-to-back is some serious dedication to cheesecake.

To be honest, I can absolutely picture a world where Kardashian had never heard of Cheesecake Factory until she ate there in Ohio—and then became so infatuated with it, she had to go again immediately. “Babe, have you ever heard of this place called Cheesecake Factory?” Kim asked Kanye, in my imagination. “They, like, sell pasta and tacos and, like, these giant pieces of cheesecake. I’m dying.”

I can’t wait to see how Keeping Up With the Kardashians documents this culinary experience.

Kim Cattrall on Why She'll 'Never' Be in Another Sex and the City Movie

If you’re one of those Sex and the City stans still holding out hope for a SATC 3 with the full cast…sorry, friend. Kim Cattrall has made it clear that she will never, ever participate in Sex and the City 3. Of course, Cattrall—who brought PR exec by day, heartbreaker by night Samantha Jones to life—has long been outspoken about not wanting to return to the beloved franchise, but a recent interview with The Daily Mail is the most definitive she’s been yet.

When asked if she would appear in another SATC film, she told the publication, “Never. It’s a no from me.”

She then added, “You learn lessons in life, and my lesson is to do work with good people and try and make it fun.” The Daily Mail dubbed this “a swipe” at her former costar Sarah Jessica Parker, though Cattrall doesn’t name check Parker—or any Sex and the City costars, for that matter—in the interview.

While there have been rumors of tension between Parker and Cattrall for years, things came to the surface last winter after Cattrall’s brother passed away. Parker shared her condolences on Cattrall’s Instagram, to which Cattrall replied, “Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”

Kim Kardashian Is Renaming Her Shapewear Line Following Criticism

Following accusations of cultural appropriation, Kim Kardashian West announced she’ll be renaming her forthcoming shapewear line, previously called Kimono.

“Being an entrepreneur and my own boss has been one of the most rewarding challenges I’ve been blessed with in my life,” she wrote on Instagram. “What’s made it possible for me after all of these years has been the direct line of communication with my fans and the public. I am always listening, learning and growing—I so appreciate the passion and varied perspectives that people bring to me.”

“When I announced the name of my shapewear line, I did so with the best intentions in mind. My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core and after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name. I will be in touch soon. Thank you for your understanding and support always.”

Kardashian announced her latest venture, a “solutionwear” brand of undergarments available in sizes XXS to 4XL and in nine shades, last week. And though it was praised for its inclusive approach to sizing and pricing, the name Kimono drew criticism, specifically from people of Japanese origin, who felt it was disrespectful to the traditional garment.

As this conversation started gaining traction on social media—even inspiring a hashtag, #KimOhNo—Kardashian issued a response to the New York Times, clarifying her intention with the name: “I understand and have deep respect for the significance of the kimono in Japanese culture and have no plans to design or release any garments that would in any way resemble or dishonor the traditional garment. I made the decision to name my company Kimono, not to disassociate the word from its Japanese roots but as a nod to the beauty and detail that goes into a garment. Filing a trademark is a source identifier that will allow me to use the word for my shapewear and intimates line but does not preclude or restrict anyone, in this instance, from making kimonos or using the word kimono in reference to the traditional garment. My solutionwear brand is built with inclusivity and diversity at its core and I’m incredibly proud of what’s to come.”

Kardashian didn’t reveal the new name for the brand, but promised to share it with the public soon. The products are expected to launch this month.

Kim Kardashian’s New Shapewear Brand Is Being Accused of Cultural Appropriation

Earlier this week Kim Kardashian West announced she’d be launching yet another new business venture: an affordable, size-inclusive shapewear line.

“Finally I can share with you guys this project that I have been developing for the last year. I’ve been passionate about this for 15 years,” she wrote on Instagram. “I would always cut up my shapewear to make my own styles, and there have also been so many times I couldn’t find a [shapewear] color that blended with my skin tone, so we needed a solution for all of this.”

Many were excited about the range of the collection: pieces going up to a 4XL, available in nine different shades, priced accessibly. However, in the days since her reveal, there has been backlash bubbling up on the Internet because of the brand’s name, Kimono.

People have accused Kardashian West of cultural appropriation over the name of her shapewear line. There’s even a hashtag: #KimOhNo.

“Wow, @KimKardashian. Thanks for BUTCHERING Japanese culture!!! My culture is not your plaything.” one Twitter user wrote. “You don’t have any respect for people who are not your family, do you? In the 15 yrs developing this project, couldn’t you find a cultural advisor?”

“The year is 2039. A child is asked what a kimono is. They reply with “Kim Kardashian’s shapewear range.” And there begins the gradual erasure & dilution of the kimono’s rich cultural history for future generations. One of many reasons why trademarking it is NOT OKAY #KimOhNo,” another said.
