Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Average Americans, Ate at Cheesecake Factory Twice in a Row


Kim Kardashian going to—or even just talking about—chain restaurants is one of my favorite pop-culture subcategories. What? You didn’t realize this was a thing? Well, you’ve been missing out, my friend. I’ll always remember when she opened up about her Chipotle order a few years back, plainly saying, “I always get a Diet Coke from the fountain with LOTS of ice. If they don’t put enough ice in it, I die.” Or when she confirmed that she “ALWAYS” orders a side of small fries at McDonald’s. Always. She probably “dies” if that also doesn’t happen.

So you can imagine my pure elation when news came out today (August 28) that Kardashian, Kanye West, and their children dined at the Cheesecake Factory two times in a row while visiting Dayton, Ohio over the weekend. (They were there for West’s Sunday Services.) According to People magazine, the famous family had several dishes while eating at the popular chain, including a slice of its famous Strawberry Cheesecake.

A fan named Kayla snapped photos of the Kardashian-Wests getting their cheesecake on, and they’re as iconic as you’d expect. Check them out for yourself, below.

I’m not sure what piece of information is more delicious: the fact that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West ate at Cheesecake Factory at all, or the fact they went twice. Have you ever been to Cheesecake Factory? It’s incredible, yes, but so, so filling. It’s the type of place even the most devoted chain restaurant-goers can only handle eating at once in a while. So to go there back-to-back is some serious dedication to cheesecake.

To be honest, I can absolutely picture a world where Kardashian had never heard of Cheesecake Factory until she ate there in Ohio—and then became so infatuated with it, she had to go again immediately. “Babe, have you ever heard of this place called Cheesecake Factory?” Kim asked Kanye, in my imagination. “They, like, sell pasta and tacos and, like, these giant pieces of cheesecake. I’m dying.”

I can’t wait to see how Keeping Up With the Kardashians documents this culinary experience.

Kylie Jenner Makes More Money in Two Hours Than Most Americans Do in a Year


Last month, Kylie Jenner’s Forbes cover started yet another Jenner/Kardashian controversy with its cover line describing her as being set to become the youngest-ever “self-made” billionaire. The comment sparked a huge internet debate about what exactly makes one self-made and interest in Jenner’s finances has not waned since.

Now, another staggering statistic about the cosmetic mogul’s income has been revealed—and it’s definitely another conversation starter.

It turns out that Jenner is making around $45,550 every two hours selling makeup to the masses, which is almost exactly the median salary ($45,552) for the average American, according to Business Insider. That’s right, in just over two hours the almost-21-year-old is making more money than most people will see in an entire year.

Just to put that in perspective, most Kylie Cosmetics lip kits are priced at $30, which translates to roughly 1,518 sold every two hours to bring in that kind of cash. Breaking it down even further, that means Jenner is making $19,007 an hour which is just…wow. Of course, we already knew that she is absurdly rich—Forbes reported that she made $166.5 million between June 2017 and June 2018—but it somehow seems even more insane when you boil it down to an hourly paycheck.

Online retailer I Saw It First created an interactive tool that calculates how long it would take for you to make the salary of some of the richest stars around. By their calculations, it would take the average American 10 years to make what Jenner does in a single day. And a worker making the median U.S. salary of $45,552 a year would have to work for 3,655 years to equal Jenner’s yearly income.

But no matter what you think about the Jenners and Kardashians, it’s hard not to respect the hustle it takes to build a cosmetics empire that continues to keep selling product at that level—”self-made” or not.

Why Americans Need to Pay Attention to Ireland's Historic Abortion Referendum


Three years ago this week, I cried with joy as I sat in my New York apartment and watched the country I grew up in make joyous, beautiful, progressive history with a national referendum that ultimately allowed us to become the first country in the world to grant into law gay marriage.

On Friday, May 25, I will again be frantically refreshing news pages as I await the result of another historic referendum—which means a country’s entire electorate are invited to vote—this time on whether to repeal the Eighth Amendment. Or for those of you unaccustomed to the Irish constitution, whether abortion will be legalized.

Abortion has been illegal in Ireland since 1861 but, in 1983, the Eighth Amendment was voted into the Irish Constitution, stating that the life of a pregnant woman is equal to that of an unborn child, and outlaws abortion for every woman.

Indeed, Ireland has had a troubling history of oppressing women, insofar as the country has had to reckon with the fact that up until as recent as the mid 1990s thousands of unmarried pregnant women were placed into servitude in what was known as the Magdelene Laundries—essentially confinement asylums run by Roman Catholic nuns for girls or young women who had become pregnant outside marriage or whose families could not or would not support them and had to be hidden away.

In many other ways, though, Ireland has changed a lot since 1983. In just a few decades, it’s gone from an often-insular society with institutions controlled by the Catholic Church to a multicultural society of socially progressives. To Americans, it might sound like we’re slow to adopt cultural norms you’re accustomed to, but progress has been made: In 1985 the Irish government approved the sale of contraceptives, divorce became legal in 1995 following another referendum, and Ireland is now the European hub of some of the largest and most innovative tech companies in the world, including Google an Facebook. Our current political leader, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, is the gay son of Indian immigrants!

I want to stress that you don’t have to agree with abortion to hope for an affirmative outcome. You just have to agree that Irish women should be afforded a legal—and safe—choice.

On Friday, if the vote gets a majority Yes, Ireland will likely enact legislation that will allow for legal abortions up to 12 weeks into a pregnancy (for context, most states in the US allows abortion up to the 20th week). After that time period, abortions will only be carried out on the grounds of a serious mental or physical health risk to the mother, or a fatal fetal condition. A No vote means that Ireland’s abortion laws, which are some of the most restrictive in the developed world, would remain in place.

This referendum is deeply divisive in Ireland and for the Irish diaspora around the world, many of which are traveling long distances to be able to cast their vote. And, right now, the polls are too close to call.

Having lived outside Ireland for the past eight years, I’m not eligible to vote but given the opportunity I would certainly vote a resounding YES to repeal the 8th.

Because abortion is illegal—full stop—thousands of women have had to seek them out in unsafe and illegal ways. According to the UK Department of Health data, nine women make the journey from Ireland to the UK to have an abortion every day. They bleed on the way home on Ryanair flights from London where they’ve had to travel to get legal terminations; they wait in anxious hope for the illegal “abortion pills” they’ve surreptitiously ordered online to make it through the postal system without getting caught because if they do, they can face up to 14 years in jail; they cry in airports with their husbands and partners when they’ve been told they have a terminal pregnancy but under Irish law they have to carry the baby to term. In Ireland, a sexual assault survivor could potentially face more jail time for terminating a pregnancy than her rapist.

As I explain this referendum to curious friends and colleagues here in the US, I want to stress that you don’t have to agree with abortion to hope for an affirmative outcome, you just have to agree that Irish women should be afforded a legal—and safe—choice.

I urge Glamour readers to pay attention to the outcome of tomorrow’s vote. While women’s reproductive rights—an area Glamour has long been committed to covering—are in a precarious place in the US right now, the fact is, for many women in many states, access to safe and legal abortions exist. I hope you’ll join me in agreeing that right should be afforded to the women across the Atlantic, too.

Trump Calls Elizabeth Warren 'Pocahontas' Again While Speaking to Native Americans


On Monday, while speaking to Native American war veterans and the press, President Donald Trump took time out to once again openly mock Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren and called her by a name he’s used before: Pocahontas.

“You were here long before any of us were here,” Trump said while speaking directly to the group of Native American code talkers. “Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas.” He added, “But you know what, I like you, because you are special.”

According to USA Today, the comment was met simply with awkward silence from the president’s guests. And that silence was especially deafening in a video showing the exact moment Trump made his insensitive remark.

Though the president didn’t specifically name Warren in his statement it was clear who he was speaking about as he’s long called the esteemed senator by this name in reference to her claim that she has Native American ancestors.

In response, Warren told MSNBC that the president’s comments were both out of place and “unfortunate.”

“This was supposed to be an event to honor heroes, people who put it all on the line for our country, and people, who because of their incredible work, saved the lives of countless Americans and our allies,” Warren said. “It is deeply unfortunate that the president of the united states cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur.”

To add insult to injury Trump also made the remarks while standing in front of a painting of President Andrew Jackson, who was the president that signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, which forced Native Americans from their lands. As Mic further explained, the act ultimately led to thousands of Native American deaths, an event which is now widely referred to as the Trail of Tears.

In a statement following the event Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she does not believe calling Warren Pocahontas is racially insensitive. Instead, she said, “I think what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage to advance her career.”

All Four U.S. Open Women's Semifinalists Are Americans

For the first time in more than three decades, all four women in the U.S. Open semifinals are Americans, guaranteeing that an American will be crowned the winner this Saturday—despite the fact that Serena Williams, the only American woman who’s even made it to the tournament’s finals in the last decade, is out on maternity leave.

Thursday night’s two semifinal matches will see Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens face off at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center’s Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City before CoCo Vandeweghe and Madison Keys take the court. Venus, 37, grew up in California; Sloane, 24, is from Florida; CoCo, 25, was born in New York; and 22-year-old Madison hails from Illinois. Of the four, only Venus, who won the whole tournament in both 2000 and 2001, has ever made it to the U.S. Open’s semifinal round.

After Madison beat Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in her quarterfinal match on Wednesday night, she spoke to The New York Times about the upcoming all-American semifinal round. “I think we were all rooting for each other today, and I thought it would be a very special moment,” she said. “I’m glad I helped everyone out and got my name in there.” And on Tuesday, after her own success in the quarters, Venus told ESPN, “It’s been a great two weeks for American tennis, seeing all the American players in the draw and all of them advancing so deep and competing so well. It’s great to see this resurgence, and I hope it can continue.”

According to The Washington Post, the last all-American women’s semifinal at the U.S. Open was all the way back in 1981—before CoCo, Sloane, and Madison were even born. That year, Chris Evert lost to Martina Navratilova and Barbara Potter lost to Tracy Austin in the semis before Tracy went on to beat Martina in the finals. Since then, only six different American women have made an appearance in the U.S. Open finals, with the Williams sisters winning a combined eight championships. (Most recently, Serena scored an impressive hat trick by taking home the trophy at the 2012, 2013, and 2014 events.) American men have an even worse track record: The tournament’s last all-American men’s semifinal session was in 1979 and the last American man to win at Arthur Ashe Stadium was Andy Roddick in 2003.

Only 4 Percent of Americans Have Sex Every Day, So No, You're Not Alone


Whether you’re single and living it up or in a new relationship, it’s pretty common to wonder if you’re having sex enough (thanks, every single movie montage of newly coupled people constantly ripping each other’s clothing off). Of course, what “enough” is exactly depends only on personal preference—but one thing most people definitely aren’t doing is getting it on every day. In fact, Americans are probably having a lot less sex that you might think, according to a recent YouGov survey.

According to the survey’s results, just 4 percent of respondents said they were having sex each and every day. And when it comes to the remaining 96 percent of Americans, 14 percent of respondents said they hit the sheets a few times a week—and another 14 percent clocked in at a few times each month.

But apparently there’s a disconnect between what’s actually happening between the sheets and what many wish was happening. The survey found that 26 percent of Americans would like to have sex a few times a week. And as for having sex daily? Eighteen percent of men would prefer to switch to that schedule, but only 9 percent of women would like to.

Another interesting takeaway from the YouGov study is that people who are married vs people in relationships and people who are single have totally different perceptions of how often the other group has sex. Forty percent of married Americans think that single people are having more sex—but only 33 percent of single Americans have sex at least once a month. However, the 36 percent of single Americans who think couples who are married or in relationships have more sex are right: almost 75 percent of coupled-up Americans have sex at least once a month, according to the survey.
