Pippa Middleton Wore a $99 Summer Dress From Kate's Favorite Maternity Brand

Pippa Middleton, sister of Kate (i.e. the Duchess of Cambridge) might not technically have a royal title, but she’s long proven to be the queen of the summer dress. Now expecting her first child, she’d adapted to maternity style quite well—and it seems she’s borrowing a tip from her older sibling‘s fashion record, stepping out in a dress from one of Kate’s favorite maternity lines.

On Friday, Pippa was spotted walking her dog wearing a $99 black off-the-shoulder dress (which she opted to wear on-the-shoulder) by London-based Séraphine. Check out the outfit, below.

The brand is perhaps best known for being one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s fashion go-tos during her past three pregnancies. She wore its Florrie Printed Woven Maternity Dress in January while pregnant with Louis—and had previously worn it in 2015 while pregnant with Charlotte.

She also wore Séraphine’s $169 Royal Blue Tailored Maternity Dress for the Royal Foundation Forum in February with now-sister-in-law Meghan Markle.

It’s not Pippa’s first time wearing the label, either: She’s also donned Séraphine’s $109 Printed Woven Maternity Shirt Dress.

The Middleton sisters aren’t the only public figures who love the brand: Séraphine has been worn by Gwen Stefani, Jessica Alba, and Kate Hudson.

Chrissy Metz Reveals How Kate's Miscarriage on 'This Is Us' Affected Her Personally

In the final five minutes of last week’s This Is Us, Randall revealed some horrible news to a stunned Kevin: that (spoiler alert) Kate had miscarried her baby. And in tonight’s episode, we saw firsthand how truly devastating that moment and the aftermath was for Kate and Toby.

“It’s not a comfortable [experience] to talk about, but it’s important because there’s so much shame around it,” Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate on the series, tells us. “One in five women will have a miscarriage, and I’m sure we all know people personally.”

For viewers, Kate’s loss is a personal one—we saw her do everything in her power to ensure a healthy pregnancy for herself and the baby. Metz felt the responsibility as well, which made for a very challenging week of filming. “I would literally go home and not want to talk to anybody,” she says. “It was difficult because you’re crying and all these emotions are right there all the time.”

The result, though, was a beautiful and powerful hour of television that not only reduced us to a blubbering mess (shocker) but helped raise awareness about the physical and emotional toll of pregnancy and the loss of an unborn child. Here, Metz explains more.

Before season two began, creator Dan Fogelman brought in each of the cast to break down their storyline for the year. Did you find out Kate would miscarry the baby the same time you found out she’d be expecting?

Chrissy Metz: Yeah, we found out during the summer [about the miscarriage], and I said, “No! This is going to be so heartbreaking.” Not only to convey, but to have people live through the experience with me and with Kate. But we trust the writers and Dan so much, and I know there is a bigger picture and story about going through something so difficult as a miscarriage. Nobody talks about it. They don’t talk about it on network television, and they don’t talk about it as in depth as we do. That’s so important in the dynamic of how [the aftermath] shapes Rebecca and Kate’s relationship, and Kate and Toby, and how Kate really feels about herself and what it means for the future. So, I realize there was so much more to do that I was hopeful, if that’s the right word. I was excited for the challenge and that hopefully this will bring a lot of discussion about miscarriage.

You and Chris Sullivan (Toby) carry the episode and each scene is extremely painful. How did you process such an emotional workload?

Chrissy: It was challenging, because you have to sit in that space for days on end. On a cellular level, your body doesn’t know the difference between real sadness and the sadness you’re portraying. I would literally go home and not want to talk to anybody. I would take a shower or a bath and just get in bed and listen to music that might shift my mood or meditate to get out of that space because you have to recover for the next day. It was difficult because you’re crying and all these emotions are right there all the time. Chris and I always have a great time on set and are laughing, joking, singing, and dancing in between takes, and I couldn’t really do that. That was a challenge for me, because I have such a great time with him. I literally was in my own space; actually, in Kate and Toby’s bedroom, where I go to just be alone because you can’t really distract yourself from that. It was challenging.

Tell me about the scene where Kate goes to the King Buffet restaurant. We see her fill up her plate, but then she sits down and pushes it away. Did you interpret that to mean that she didn’t want to eat her feelings, or she didn’t want to go backward with all the progress she’s made?

Chrissy: I think it was all of those things. She felt so guilty for being plus-size and being pregnant that she felt that was the reason she lost the baby, which is not the case, necessarily. Many plus-size women have awesome, healthy babies and carry them to term. But because that was sort of always playing in her mind—that she didn’t want to eat because of that, and she didn’t want to fall off the wagon—she had no control over anything else but pushing that plate of food away at that moment. It took a lot for her to even…you see when she recognizes the [restaurant] sign and is like, “OK, this is my comfort.” Then she goes in and she’s like, “No, this isn’t my comfort. This isn’t going to bring the baby back. This is not going to make me happy. It’s going to make everything worse.”

When you numb yourself out on food, you really aren’t dealing with your emotions. I think she’s ahead of that because of the therapy she had at the weight loss camp; she knows this isn’t going to help. It was one of the first times a really traumatic experience happened to her and she didn’t go for food. So it was important for her to show up for herself that way.

The episode makes a point of relaying that Kate’s miscarriage is nothing she could have prevented, which is so important because women often have a tendency to blame themselves. The doctor even says to Kate, “The main thing is, you got pregnant, and most likely, you will be able to again.”

Chrissy: Yeah, that’s a really important note and scene. One in five women will have a miscarriage, and I’m sure we all know people personally. They could not have done anything to prevent it. It’s just nature, and that’s what happens. But it’s so difficult, especially surrounding Kate and her issues with her weight. I’m glad that was explained in that way too, because you could be thin, overweight, tall; it doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t matter. We can bring up the conversation and say, “Wow, isn’t that interesting?” Because how do you ever bring up a miscarriage? What do you say, and where do you say it at? It’s just not a comfortable situation to talk about, but it’s important because there is so much shame around it.

The scene where Rebecca visits Kate in the present day is such a welcome moment after so much turmoil. Do you think this will be a major turning point for them heading into the next half of the season?

Chrissy: You know, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Nothing can be entirely forgiven overnight, but it definitely sparks forging a healthy relationship and moving in the right direction for them. They were finally vulnerable enough to express true, deep, raw feelings about two really traumatic experiences in their lives, and they never thought they’d have common ground. They never had before. There was so much resentment or pain or sadness throughout their relationship. Kate always felt she was inadequate, and so did Rebecca, in that she never felt she was a good enough mom.

They’ve just been misunderstanding each other. I don’t know if it was Rebecca showing up at Kate’s door, or Kate letting her guard down, or both of their [actions] sort of working together perfectly at the right time, but they were ready and willing to take a step in the right direction for each other and the relationship. I’m so, so glad that it’s moving in that way. No relationship is ever going to be perfect, but it’s definitely cracked open something new for them.

Let’s talk about Toby. Kate lashes out at him and says this happened to her, not him. My first thought was that Toby better stand up for himself. It may not have been a physical thing for him, but it absolutely happened to him, too.

Chrissy: That’s right. That’s right.

Do you think Kate is too hard on the people she loves? And did you have trouble with her in that moment, even though you understand her anger and her sadness?

Chrissy: Well, I think so much of that was projecting. We hurt the ones we love, and we project our feelings onto them. A lot of that was that, as opposed to not understanding how he was really feeling because when you love somebody, you don’t want them to go through any pain. Also, she has never been through this, so she’s feeling sorry for herself and trying to, in a way, minimize his feelings. She felt hers were so much more valid, when they aren’t. Yes, of course, she was physically carrying the baby, but it was so important that he communicated how he felt. Initially, I was like, Ugh, I can understand both sides of the coin. I’m very diplomatic that way. But ultimately I was like, “No, I have to play it in that he doesn’t know [what it’s like].” Yes, it’s grief and sorrow, but he really doesn’t know. And, of course, I was playing it in the way that there’s a hormonal imbalance because her body still thinks it’s pregnant. There’s all that going on, too. But it wasn’t easy. It’s not easy to get angry, though I think it’s very good progression in Kate communicating her feelings, whether they were misdirected or not.

PHOTO: Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Let’s end this on a lighter note: Why didn’t Kate and Toby get a new shower curtain? Did they really have to pull the old one from the garbage?

Chrissy: I thought the same thing! I said the same thing! I was like, “They can afford a new shower curtain!” But you know what, it was about that shower curtain in particular. Like, getting that one so it could remind them it didn’t break them. It didn’t break their relationship. It only made them stronger, just like Toby rushing out to find that baby bath, only to give it away. That’s what he had control over in that moment, and he wanted to help in any way he could. I think it’s more a symbol of, we get to have this reminder when we’re in the bathroom and we walk by it every day. We see there’s still hope that they did this together. And because it was when she fell in the tub, I think it was more symbolic. But I thought the same thing initially!

I thought, “I just hope they sanitize that before they put it back up!”

Chrissy: I know, right?! Luckily, it was just on top of the garbage and not inside. But, listen, I always think about those things. I ask a lot of questions! In this case, it was more symbolic.

'This Is Us' Season 2 Episode 9 Recap: Kate's Story Will Break You

This Is Us is continuing its trio of episodes focused on each of the Pearson siblings. This week’s was all about Kate, who, remember, just found out she lost her baby. That pretty much set the tone for this week’s episode, so fair warning: It’s rough. Spoilers ahead.

Last week’s miscarriage reveal makes this week’s opener pretty devastating: Kate is taking her pre-natal vitamins and talking to her bump. Clearly, what Randall told Kevin hasn’t happened yet, so I’m walking on pins and needles at this point.

But the present-day story pivots for a moment to the ’90s, where Teenage Kate is listening to her walkman in that angsty ’90s teen way. The power’s out at Château Pearson, and Kate’s dog, Louis, pees on her carpet. Blech. Interestingly, we’re reliving the same night Kevin met with that football coach and screwed things up…just from Kate’s POV.

Rebecca nags Kate about picking her top five college preferences because time is running out to decide. Kate would rather clean her dog’s piss than think about college which, honestly, was most of us at one point senior year.

Back to Adult Kate: She’s drinking some gross green smoothie and making a list of questions to ask her OBGYN. Toby makes a lame dad joke, which comes off more annoying than cute. I feel like Toby is annoying 99 percent of the time on This Is Us? Like, stop talking about Shamrock Shakes.

Oh shit: Kate leaves to go measure something in her bathroom, and she feels a sharp pain in her stomach, which is what causes her to lose her baby. She’s back at home, now, and dodging calls and texts from her mother. The tension in Toby and Kate’s house is at an all-time high, and understandably so.

Not even 12 hours after miscarrying, Kate leaves to go to her next singing gig, which Toby finds baffling. Personally, I think Toby should let Kate do whatever TF she needs to do to cope. If that means working more, then so be it. Again, Toby’s out of line and annoying.

Also annoying is Teenage Kate, who completely twists around the well-meaning conversation Rebecca has with her about college. Rebecca says it’s cool if Kate doesn’t know what her passion is, which Kate takes as Rebecca saying she’s “passionless.” Um, what? She’s just looking for a fight, TBH. But then again she’s 17, so it makes sense.

When Kate leaves the room, Rebecca finds a completed application to Berklee College of Music stowed away…and a tape of Kate singing. Teenage Kate’s beautiful voice plays over a scene of Adult Kate singing at a fancy lunch, which she abruptly leaves after seeing a mother playing with her child. Very sad, if not a tad heavy-handed. Adult Kate tearfully dodges yet another call from Rebecca and passes an all-you-can-eat buffet. Whether or not she goes in, though, is still a mystery.

Meanwhile, Toby receives a FedEx message that says a baby item Kate ordered is en route to their apartment. Realizing this would obviously make Kate more upset, he goes down to the distribution center to intercept the package. He gives some uncomfortable monologue to one of the workers about how he’s a “large and powerful man” and will do whatever it takes to prevent this package from arriving to their doorstep. Stop threatening random delivery dudes, Toby!

We’re back to Teenage Kate. She’s at Kevin’s football game with Rebecca but, remember, she doesn’t know Rebecca knows about her singing aspirations. Rebecca spills the beans about finding her application. Kate’s annoyed at first, which honestly comes off as bratty more than anything because Rebecca is trying so hard to make a connection. She softens, though, and they share a tender moment—which gets interrupted by Kevin’s knee injury.

At the hospital, Rebecca gives Teenage Kate a genuinely devastating speech about how she’s sad Kate felt like she couldn’t come to her about Berklee—and how it’s her job to be open for Kate, always, even when Kate doesn’t want it. I don’t know why, but this is making me tear up more than anything else on this episode. I’m a sucker for mother/child dynamics!

Now we’re back to Adult Kate, and she’s at a buffet. This whole narrative feels exploitative and is making me cringe. She ultimately decides to not eat the food and leaves the restaurant. This, conveniently, is timed to Toby finding the baby package at the warehouse. Whad’ya know?!

Kate eventually answers Rebecca’s call and tells her she lost the baby. She’s at home, but Toby doesn’t know that; he went to Kate’s singing gig to pick her up and panicked when he saw she wasn’t there. Once they’re both home, they have a huge, teary-eyed argument about the miscarriage. It’s some of Chrissy Metz and Chris Sullivan’s best work on the show.

Rebecca shows up to Adult Kate’s apartment, and Kate collapses into her arms—which parallels the monologue Rebecca gave Teen Kate at the hospital. Of course it does. It’s This Is Us! Rebecca then tells Kate a story about how she freaked out on a random lady way back when about a bag of yellow onions. I shouldn’t be laughing at this, but I am. The scene ends with Kate and Rebecca crying and hugging and now I’m crying and want to hug my mother. Damn it. Rebecca and her wig got me again.

Parting thoughts: Randall’s episode is next week!

The Story Behind Kate's Surprise Pregnancy on This Is Us and How Chrissy Metz Reacted

Is your jaw still on the floor from the last two minutes of tonight’s This Is Us? No one could have predicted that Kate’s reason for worrying about fitting into a new dress—to sing at a bar mitzvah, no less—was because she’s (SPOILER) expecting a baby. A baby! All the signs in the episode—not wanting to eat Toby’s homemade, healthy muffin, checking her fitbit during sex, not missing a yoga class, walking down the pharmacy aisle specifically labeled laxatives, weight loss, and vitamins—pointed to a very (and we mean very) focused Kate merely wanting to keep up a healthy lifestyle. Granted, things were looking like she might be taking it all too far, but haven’t we learned by now not to expect the obvious on this show?

And now we have so many questions: What does this mean for Kate’s burgeoning career? When will she tell Toby? How did Chrissy Metz react? So we called This Is Us executive producer and co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker to fill us in. Read on.

I was totally shocked by that twist. Was Kate’s pregnancy planned from the beginning?

IA: There’s no way you could have known! [Laughs] When we started breaking down this season back in the spring, we knew we wanted to do something really exciting for Kate and Toby. We knew they had the engagement and the wedding in the wings, but that seemed a little too expected, and nothing about their relationship and romance have gone along the traditional timeline. She proposed to him when he was in a coma, they broke up, he had a heart attack…the whole thing has been a little bit unconventional, so we were really excited when we came up with the notion that yet again things would happen a little bit out of the traditional order for them, and they’d get this surprise pregnancy.

So this was not in Dan Fogelman’s original series outline then? Or was it?

IA: Pregnancy was definitely part of the plan for them. I don’t believe in his initial bible he knew exactly when he wanted to tackle it, but it definitely was something he wanted to do for Kate and Toby.

Now that the audience knows Kate is pregnant, should we have really believed she was that obsessed with fitting into a dress if the baby is the size of a lentil? Or was this just a good way for us to make us think this was anything other than her being pregnant?

IA: No, I think [her music gig] was just an easy explanation for her to tell Toby, because she’s not quite ready yet to reveal to him what’s really going on. That was a nice cover story she could use that was believable for him.

What was Chrissy’s reaction when you guys told her about Kate’s pregnancy?

IA: I remember we had her and Chris Sullivan (Toby) into our office, and we kind of pitched them the whole season at the top of the year so they knew what we were planning. They were both so excited to tell this story. Chrissy was already excited that she was going to get to sing, and then we told her about the pregnancy and potentially the wedding down the road, and she was very happy with her season arc.

But was she shocked about the pregnancy?

IA: Oh, totally! She was like, “Wait, what?!” This was another [plot line] where we had to go all secret agent with the script. When we sent out the script [to the cast and crew], we had to omit the final scene. The network called us and was like, “What is it? What is it?” We told them verbally over the phone because we didn’t want there to be any chance that it would leak out onto the Internet ahead of time.

I love a good surprise, but part of me was a little bummed that there’s a baby in the mix because I really wanted Kate’s focus this season to be on her singing and developing her relationship with Toby. Will she still want to pursue her career, or will it get put on the back-burner?

IA: Yeah, it’s yet another challenge we’re throwing at Kate because she definitely has just started getting traction on this career and it’s been a dream of hers. I don’t think she’s going to want to let it go. At the same time, it’s very, very early in this pregnancy, and our show operates relatively in real time. We jump a little bit [every now and then], but pretty much we’re going over the course of the year. It’s not like she’s popping out a baby next week. It takes a while! So there’s nothing really stopping her from continuing to pursue the singing as she’s pregnant.

At the age of 37, being pregnant is technically considered high-risk. Kate even says, “Because of my age and my weight, I want to follow the instructions.” Is there a risk she, unfortunately, won’t carry to full term?

IA: You’re safe to say we’re experiencing this journey along with her, and she’s clearly…she’s nervous to even tell Toby. She’s doing everything right—she’s getting the prenatal vitamins, she’s exercising, she’s eating very carefully—but there’s a lot of anxiety that she’s experiencing. We’re telling a very, very specific pregnancy story here, and that could look a little different for Kate.

Will we see any flashbacks in future episodes to the moment that Kate took the pregnancy test to see her reaction? Will viewers ever get to see that?

IA: Oh, interesting! That’s not in the cards, but that is actually a really good idea! [Laughs] Perhaps down the line we will flashback to that moment.

Will we see or hear Kate talk about the moment she first thought she might be pregnant?

IA: Yes, yeah, that’s a definite possibility. Because we wanted to tell the story in a surprising way, we had to skip over a little bit of the very early days of her learning this, so there’s definitely another piece of the story to tell of that.

When will Toby find out about the pregnancy?

IA: I think it’s safe to say Toby needs to find out soon. Kate’s being very, very cautious about this, and she’s very nervous. She doesn’t want to spill the beans too soon, but they have a very good communicative relationship. I don’t think she can hold out on him much longer before she has to let him know what’s up.

How will the pregnancy affect Toby and Kate’s relationship?

IA: They are so good together, and they love each other so much, but it has moved pretty fast. They met a little over a year ago, and they are already engaged, living together, and now pregnant with a kid. The plan for them was live together for a while, have a long engagement, figure out the wedding as she gets her singing off the ground, and this is going to throw them for a bit of a loop because it’s a lot very quickly.

PHOTO: Maarten de Boer/NBC

Do you already know the sex of the baby?

IA: Yeah, of course. We debate back and forth and plan the whole thing out for the season ahead of time, but I could never tell you.

If Kate carries the baby to term, is this something that would happen in season two, or would it be carried over to season three?

IA: Well, it’s like I said, our show happens in pretty much real time over the course of a year. We’re in the fall now, and she’s very early in her pregnancy, so that puts her due toward the end of the season.

This show already has like 75 cast members, and now you want to add one more? What are you thinking? [Laughs]

IA: [Laughs] Well, whenever we have our babies on, we’re like, “Oh, let’s try and limit the babies!” Hopefully, they’ll have a nice nursery that is off camera as much as possible because filming with a baby is very difficult.

How did the rest of the cast react? When did they find out?

IA: They are all so curious about each other’s storylines because they’re all so close, so when we brought each of our regulars in to walk them through the season, they’d ask, “Well what’s up with the other characters? What’s up with Kate and Toby?” They all knew from the beginning, but they didn’t know when it was going to happen or when we were going to reveal it. But once that script came out with the final scene omitted, they were able to connect the dots pretty quickly.

Kate’s pregnancy adds another layer to her relationship with Rebecca. One example is that if Kate ends up having a girl, how will she try to raise her child differently? There’s so many directions to take this storyline.

IA: Oh, totally. I think I mentioned this before, but this season is so much about the mother/daughter relationship between Kate and Rebecca. As Kate is sort of looking forward to what she’s going to be like as a mother of her child, she’s definitely looking back at what worked and didn’t work with her relationship with Rebecca. It just makes it all the more loaded now that she’s thinking about the kind of mother she’s going to be.

And what about next week’s episode?

IA: We’re picking up right where we left off with this story, and I think it pays off next week in a very fun, satisfying way.

Prince William Says Princess Kate's Pregnancy With Their Third Child Is 'Very Good News'

After a somewhat rough beginning to Princess Kate‘s third pregnancy, the royals are now properly celebrating the newest addition to the family.

Prince William attended a mental health conference in Oxford on Tuesday, and before speaking about the trauma that can have a serious effect on first responders, he addressed this week’s exciting announcement, People reports.

Despite Kate’s struggles with morning sickness, which she also experienced while pregnant with George, 4, and Charlotte, 2, William said the pregnancy is “very good news,” and added, “There’s not much sleep going on at the moment.” He also noted that although Kate’s first trimester was “a bit anxious to start with,” the family has finally been able to “start celebrating this week.”

The royal family announced the big news on Monday. A statement released by Kensington Palace on Twitter reads, “Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their third child. The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.” Kate’s morning sickness was also mentioned in the statement, as an explanation for her absence at upcoming events: “As with her previous two pregnancies, the Duchess is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. Her Royal Highness will no longer carry out her planned engagement at the Hornsey Road Children’s Centre in London today. The Duchess is being cared for at Kensington Palace.”

A little brother or sister for George and Charlotte isn’t entirely unexpected. During a trip to Poland earlier this summer, after being gifted a toy for a newborn, Kate reportedly joked, “We will just have to have more babies!” And there’s plenty of room at Kensington Palace, since Prince William and Princess Kate recently added a huge, three-story extension to the royal residence in preparation for their move from Amner Hall to the palace. The renovation proposal claimed that the nearly 5,000-square-foot expansion would “free up the palace suites for the Royal Family” and is “required to allow for the accommodation of administration which must necessarily be moved out of rooms leased from the Royal Household in Kensington Palace.” It would also free up a ton of space for a new nursery and multiple playrooms—just saying.
