Jameela Jamil Sparked an Internet Debate Over Her Comments About the Kardashians

The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil has never shied away from tackling society’s obsession with dictating and policing how women “should” look. Earlier this year, she launched an Instagram account called “I Weigh” that seeks to measure women by “achievements and experiences, not pounds and kilograms” and later poured her feelings into a powerful piece for Glamour.com: “Our culture is obsessed with women’s appearances, and it’s holding us back as a gender.”

Now, she’s back in the spotlight for taking on these issues again. She went on a podcast from the U.K.’s Channel 4 late last week and talked specifically about the Kardashians, whom she has called out in the past for promoting unrealistic standards of beauty to young girls. After Kim Kardashian posted an ad promoting an appetite-suppressant lollipop in May, Jamil had screenshot the images and written on Twitter, “No. Fuck off. No. You terrible and toxic influence on young girls,” she wrote on Twitter. “I admire their mother’s branding capabilities, she is an exploitative but innovative genius, however this family makes me feel actual despair over what women are reduced to.”

On the Channel 4 podcast, hosted by Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Jamil elaborated about why she called the Kardashians toxic—and how she feels their influence embodies the idea of a “double agent for the patriarchy.”

“The double agent for the patriarchy is basically just a woman who perhaps unknowingly is putting the patriarchal narrative out into the world,” she said, adding later, “But it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing: Just because you look like a woman, we trust you and we think you’re on our side, but you are selling us something that really doesn’t make us feel good… You’re selling us self-consciousness.”

While many people embraced Jamil’s criticism as constructive, the Internet was quickly divided. Some pointed out that in the past, Jamil has made comments about the sexuality of artists like Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus. “Jameela Jamil has history for policing/shaming women for ~using their sexuality~ & it’s so tedious,” one Twitter user wrote.

In the Guardian on Sunday, Frances Ryan had a different take than Jamil.

She wrote about why calling Kardashian “a double agent for the patriarchy” can be problematic—but also argued that Jamil made an important point worth exploring: “Still, blaming other women for misogyny has always felt uncomfortable—like you are doing patriarchy’s job by turning on women pressured to conform to sexism, rather than critiquing the male-dominated structures that got us here. But Jamil is surely speaking out about a side to sexism that is worth confronting.”

There are more than a few sides to sexism and misogyny worth confronting, and whether or not you agree with Jamil, it’s worth considering the mixed messages the Kardashians send under the guise of being feminist—and figuring out how they fit into how you define (and live out) the concept.

Welp, the Kardashians Won't Be Throwing Shade at Scott Disick and Sofia Richie Anymore

It seems like the Kardashians are going to have to dial down their shade levels a bit, because Scott Disick and Sofia Richie have reportedly called it quits after almost a year of traveling—and kissing in front of cameras together. A source has apparently confirmed to People that Richie has broken up with Disick, citing his “old issues” as contributing to their split.

“When Scott drinks, he is a sloppy mess and fools around,” the source told People.

There were also rumors floating around that Disick had cheated on Richie.

If you remember, the Kardashians were not happy when they heard that father and then-34-year-old Disick was in a relationship with 19-year-old Sofia Richie. There were savage Instagram comments (see: Kendall writing “Aww, Scott and his kids” on a photo of Richie and Disick) and televised interrogations (see: matriarch Kris straight-up trolling Disick by asking him to confirm both Richie’s age and his own age during an episode of KUWTK).

We’re not here to judge the relationships of consenting adults, but the 14-year age difference between Disick and Richie did raise some eyebrows, especially after Disick flipped out about ex Kourtney’s relationship with Younes Bendjima, an almost-equally younger man, earlier this year. Double standards, y’all.

This wasn’t Disick’s first relationship with someone younger than the youngest of the KarJenner sisters. Disick had a short-lived and extremely confusing fling with Bella Thorne in the summer of 2017. They were spotted making out and getting real PDA-y poolside in Cannes. When the Internet responded by freaking out, Thorne said she and Disick were “legit nothing,” and then Disick said he only dated Thorne to make Kourtney angry. So…yikes.

Although the Kardashians can’t cast their shade on this relationship any longer, it’s only a matter of time until another family-adjacent juicy relationship makes headlines. Please watch this space for more.

End of an Era: The Kardashians Are Closing DASH Stores for Good

It’s crucial to celebrate significant eras in time when they end. When you graduate college, for example, your parents might throw you a party or give you money. When Oprah Winfrey announced in 2011 she was discontinuing her talk show, famous people and political figures came out in droves to tribute her. And when the Obama administration ended in 2016, news outlets dedicated large chunks of time to celebrating his legacy.

But none of these eras are more important to culture, history, time, and space—to me, at least—than the one that ended today (April 19). TMZ broke the news that DASH, the Kardashians’ iconic store, home to coffee table books with their faces on it, plastic water bottles with their names on it, and exactly three racks of clothes, is closing for good. (The New York boutique shuttered in 2016, but now Miami and Los Angeles are following suit.) That’s right: DASH is done. Finished. The chord has been cut. No longer will Keeping Up With the Kardashians feature episodes with the sisters “folding merchandise” and “doing inventory” while they talk shit about Kris Jenner. It truly is the end of an era.

I mean, where would we be without this QVC video of Kourtney raving about leopard tunics?

[embedded content]

Or what about that time Khloé chewed out Kris in the middle of DASH for getting Kim a fragrance deal before her?

[embedded content]

Oh, and we can’t forget the short-lived KUWTK spinoff series Dash Dolls. Khloé cooly saying she has “no problem replacing every single one” of her DASH employees is legendary.

Not since McDonald’s has a consumer brand affected the lives of Americans so deeply. DASH is an institution. This photo (below) of Kim wearing a necklace the size of my head and celebrating the launch of DASH Miami is the modern-day Mona Lisa. The Louvre is currently bidding for it! (And if it’s not: shame on you.)

Frankly, this news is making me emotional. No store is ever going to simultaneously carry Kim’s selfie book, that YA novel Kendall and Kylie wrote, and Kris’ cookbook, aptly titled, In the Kitchen with Kris: A Kollection of Kardashian-Jenner Family Favorites. Would I ever buy those three books at the same time? Of course not, but I want the option. I like options.

Pour one out for DASH, dolls. Nothing will ever be the same.

Would You Pose With Your Sisters Like the Kardashians Do?

At first, when I saw the new Kardashian-Jenner Calvin Klein campaign, I didn’t think anything was weird. We’re so used to seeing the five famous sisters huddled together—hands clasped around one another’s waist, lips puckered up for a kiss—that nothing seemed out of the ordinary. In fact, their physical closeness is one of the things that makes them so fun to watch on screen. In a culture of for-the-cameras relationships, these siblings (some half, some full, some decades older than others) seem irreducibly, even aspirationally, close.

And then I gave the images a second look.

Once you strip away all the fast-take headlines practically embedded in Belgian photographer Willy Vanderperre’s images—Whose Bump Is Hiding Behind Whom? When, Dear GOD, Were These Pictures Taken? Who Was Photoshopped Into a Bratz Doll?—there is only one thing left: raw sexuality. Between sisters.

PHOTO: COURTESY OF CALVIN KLEIN/WILLY VANDERPERRE

I was instantly reminded of that 2015 V magazine editorial with Gigi and Bella Hadid. In it the sisters, then 18 and 19 years old, pose for 49-year-old photographer Steven Klein in a series of compromising positions: sisters spooning in knee high-boots and cut-out body suits, their legs intertwined; sisters holding hands in mesh dresses; sisters standing and sitting with their legs spread. The headline? “Double Trouble.” (Also worth mentioning: the just-about-to-kiss body language in Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s 2015 Balmain campaign. Kylie was only 17 when the campaign, shot by Mario Sorrenti, then 43, was released.)

Of course, suggestive, women-only kincest imagery isn’t new to the heteronormative canon. Encoded in pictures and headlines like these is the lamely sexist suggestion that two female siblings in their underwear might just—whoops!—blur the line between sisterly love and lust.

Unfortunately (and perhaps expectedly), this fantasy doesn’t cut both ways. Don’t believe me? Just try to imagine this Calvin Klein shoot with a group brothers. Picture Chris, Liam, and the third Hemsworth cuddled up in an abandoned barn with their hands on each other’s abdomens. OK, now picture that Liam has no pants on and is casually covering his tushy cheeks with a country blanket. Yeah. The whole thing adds up to a whole bunch of WHYYY. It would never happen—nor would this kind of sisterly touching occur in the real world.

Kylie and Kendall get physical for Balmain, 2015

“The whole thing is weird. I’d say I’m very close with my sisters but not that close,” editorial assistant Tess Kornfeld, 24, said when I asked for feedback. “I can’t imagine posing with my sister in a sexualized way,” offered up features assistant Samantha Leach, 25. “We don’t have many boundaries, but I’d never want to pose in lingerie with her.” Added another Glamour staffer, 29: “I have no issue with my sisters seeing me naked, or sleeping next to me in a bed in undies and a tank top, but I would never pose in a weird ad that makes it look like we’re game for threesomes.”

I then took my research to the wizards of Instagram. Of the 271 people who viewed my poll, above, only 27 responded. Of those responders, only four people voted yes (though I am disqualifying my husband’s friend Glenn, because he is not a woman. Also, how Glenn of a move is that?) Eighty-five percent of responders said they would “never” touch their sisters the way depicted in these ads.

Included in those who responded “yes, duh” to sisterly touching was my friend and fellow editor Danielle Prescod, 29. “I don’t even see it as sexual,” she texted me when I asked for her reasoning. “They feel individually sexy to me, but it doesn’t make me feel like they’re trying to be sexy with each other. I’m more uncomfortable when it’s brother-sister stuff, like Anwar and Gigi.”

In an effort to get some cross-generational perspective, I emailed my own sister, who, at 42, is a decade older than I am. “Are all those people really sisters?” she responded. I quickly broke down the Kardashian-Jenner family tree and asked my question again: Would you be comfortable touching me, your little sister, like this? “I’m not offended by the photo, if that’s what you’re asking,” she eventually wrote back. “If I were getting paid a bazillion dollars like the Kardashians, maybe.” A few minutes later a new message from my popped up in my inbox. “Wait, would the photo be published?” she wrote. “To be clear, I don’t want a nudie photo of me published anywhere—with or without you.”

Watch the Kardashian-Jenners Recreate the First *Keeping Up With the Kardashians* Intro

As the old saying goes: The more things change, the more they stay Kardashian. (Honestly I’m shocked that none of the Kardashian-Jenner clan have trademarked this phrase yet.)

Anyway, it’s been 10 krazy, konfusing, kwild, kfun, kemotional and kprofitable years since the first season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians aired on E!, in turn creating a legion of reality stars that blossomed into some of the most famous women on the face of the planet. Who would’ve imagined? Ryan Seacrest, that’s who.

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the world-changing reality show, and the pending 14th season of the show (that’s not counting the countless spinoffs), the Kardashian-Jenner krew got together to film a season intro that is equal parts extra, nostalgic, loving, glitzy, glamorous, splashy, and smart. In other words, an intro that defines who they are.

The 90-second clip shows each of the women embodying the image they have so perfectly crafted over the past decade. Momager Kris a boss lady in a helicopter, supermodel Kendall is preparing to strut down a catwalk, Kourtney is the MILF, Khloe is in the gym working on her Revenge Bod, Kylie is driving a car she no doubt purchased from the billions she’s earned through lip kits. And then there’s Kim, who is just being Kim. (Ron Kardashian and Caitlyn Jenner are missing, but neither have appeared in an intro in several seasons.)

The video, peppered with iconic scenes from previous episodes, ends with—spoiler alert—a flashback to the end of the first-ever intro. It reminds audiences that at its core KUWTK is the same ol’ feel good family sitcom reality show that it always was, despite all the celebrity scandals, break ups, feuds, or empires they have built together and individually since the show premiered. (Something even Khloe echoed in a recent essay for Glamour on her family’s journey through reality tv, describing them as a “modern-day Brady Bunch—a little gimmicky and with a takeaway each episode.”)

Watch the intro on repeat until the Keeping Up With the Kardashians 10th anniversary special airs this Sunday on E! (of course). The 14th season will begin airing on Oct. 1.

The Kardashians Are Donating $500,000 to Hurricane Harvey Relief

PHOTO: Gilbert Carrasquillo

The first family of reality TV is joining the growing list of celebrities donating to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. In a tweet on Tuesday, Kim Kardashian West announced that she, her mother Kris, and her sisters will be pledging $500,000 to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

The family seems to have been inspired by actor Kevin Hart, who called on celebrities to contribute to his relief fund. Hart himself pledged $25,000 to aid victims of the storm.

“My sisters, mom and I accept your challenge Kev!” Khloe Kardashian tweeted on Tuesday.

Hart’s hurricane relief fund had raised more than $300,000 at time of writing.

The reality stars follow some of the biggest names in entertainment who’ve stepped up to support the cause. Beyoncé announced in a statement that she’s working with BeyGOOD, her philanthropic initiative, to help as many people as possible affected by the storm; Lady Gaga tweeted that she was “making relief donations”; Katy Perry, during her hosting gig at the Video Music Awards, urged viewers to donate to the Red Cross.

The storm brought a record amount of rainfall to Texas—nearly 50 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Officials say at least nine people have died as a result of the devastating storm, and warn that upwards of 30,000 people will be displaced.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates the recovery will take years.
