This Is Us Season 4, Episode 17 Recap: Jack Is Alive in the Future

Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri is one of the most respected universities in the country. How did you decide on it?

IA: We asked where the few most common geographical locations would be for [this kind of trial]. And that was the one that came up.

Sterling K. Brown is from St. Louis. Is there any chance you will be going on location to film at Wash U. in season five?

IA: We have talked about it, and we’ve talked about it with Sterling. It’s still a little bit early as we’re just mapping out the nitty gritty of our season five. But it is definitely something that’s been bandied about.

Obviously there’s hope Rebecca’s condition might be helped by this clinical trial, but we know that things don’t seem to be going so well when they’re at the cabin celebrating the big three’s 40th birthday five months from now. Randall and Kevin aren’t speaking, and Rebecca has just been brought home by local authorities after getting lost. How much will we learn about those roadblocks in next week’s finale?

EB: In next week’s finale, not so much. It’s more stuff we’re going to be exploring when we return. Yes, it’s true, we’ve seen a glimpse of Rebecca down the line a few months from now, but we haven’t seen the whole context of that episode that she’s having. So it’s something we’re going to be revisiting. People are going to get more answers about what exactly is happening there and why that happened to her at that time.

NBC/Will Hart

As for Kevin, will we find out who his fiancé is in the finale next week?

IA: We will not necessarily find out who his fiancé is next week, but we’ll get some big steps forward.

Will there be a time jump in the finale?

IA: The finale jumps all over the place. You’re going to have to really sit there with notes and try to keep up and guess where you are in time.

What else can you say about next week’s season four finale?

IA: I think people will have a lot of the answers they’ve been wondering about what’s going on between the brothers. It really queues us up for our return, which is going to be that 40th birthday episode. And of course, as our finales always do, we’ll throw in a few curve balls that people could never see coming unless they’ve been hiding under our writer’s room conference table.

Will we get more answers on what is going on with Kate and Toby and their relationship?

IA: Yeah, we have a great [story for them] next week. It’s a really special one that gets to a really unexpected place.

EB: Yeah, it’s a really beautiful episode that is written by Jessica Radloff Dan Fogelman himself, and he did an unbelievable job with the script. The actors are unbelievable in what they’ve done with it, and we can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’s a very exciting episode of TV.

The This Is Us season four finale airs Tuesday, March 24 on NBC. Jessica Radloff is the West Coast editor at Glamour. You can follow her on Instagram at @jessicaradloff14.

A Fashion Editor's Impulse Buys: Jack & Coke Slurpees, a $118 Prairie Dress, and More

Time and time again, I’ve lamented how, even though my day job is to tell people what to shop for, I’m not a great shopper. I spend a lot of my own time (too much of my own time) clicking through pages upon pages of online sales, digging up deeply discounted treasures in my size. Then I get overwhelmed by the thought of dropping so much money (yes, that plain black designer dress is 70 percent off, but it’s still $200) and immediately close out of all the tabs at once.

The thrill of the hunt is enough for me. I wear the same high-waisted Levi’s jeans and black turtlenecks from Marshall’s every day, anyway. It’s not like I’m immune to “it” pieces—you spend enough hours looking at incredibly stylish people online, you inevitably get an itch for a multi-colored, animal-print sweater that can’t ever be described as sensible. But I tend to dwell on these things. I’ll think about buying something for weeks that turns into months, that by the time I psych myself up to make a purchase it’s sold out.

Instead, most of my money—spent impulsively or otherwise—goes to food and experiences, like going to the movies with my boyfriend or flying home to Puerto Rico to visit my family. Then, there’s my dog, Beanie, a nine-plus year-old rescue that has senior-dog vet bills and more sweaters than days of the week. (She gets cold! And looks so darn cute in them!)

When I was tasked with documenting my impulse spending habits for a month, though, something weird happened. For the first time in a very long time, I had an itch to shop. After Christmas sales? A casual browse turned into two separate deliveries. A rare blowout sale from that Scandinavian brand everyone’s been wearing? My defenses were low, I couldn’t resist. My closet is full, but my checking account took a hit.

Behold, everything I impulsively bought over the past month.

The DIY Pet Ornament My Dog Absolutely Needed and Wasn’t at All Ambivalent About: $3.99
I go to a Marshall’s near my apartment about once a month, just to look. (I’ve found that it’s best to go in without a plan of what to buy and simply keep an open mind—I’ve found some great kitchen stuff that way.) When I dropped by in early December, they had just unloaded all of their holiday gift merchandise, which means every section was stocked. Of course, I decided to use this as an opportunity to buy something for myself. I found this adorable DIY tree ornament that creates an impression of your pet’s paw. It’s our first holiday season with Beanie—we adopted her over the summer—and are just so darn excited about it that I added it to my basket. We didn’t even put up a tree this year.

The Sale I Was Obliged to Shop As a Fashion Girl™: $278.47
It was Thursday, the last before our office closed for the holiday. At 9:18 A.M., right as I was walking in, I got a message from my boss: “Insane Ganni sale on its website.” She wasn’t joking: The Scandi label fashion people can’t get enough of—seriously, look at any street-style gallery from 2018 and you’ll spot at least three pieces from it—was offering a rare 60 percent off its signature floral skirts and poufy-sleeved blouses. I was a fan, but managed to resist its Instagrammable allure both because it was so pervasive in my circles and because I felt the price point (around $300 for a midi-length dress) was a bit higher than I’m comfortable spending on trend pieces. But now, most of them were under $100. And with free shipping.

After about an hour of deliberating, I landed on three pieces: a shapeless, blue leopard-print cotton dress ($118); a floral mesh wrap skirt ($82); and a floral blouse ($68). With tax, my total was $278.47.

Jack & Coke Slurpees, $16

The Jack & Coke Slurpees That Make Going to the Movies As An Adult So Much More Fun: $16
I spent Christmas with my boyfriend’s family in Ohio. Whenever I visit, I take advantage of the lower movie ticket prices (well, compared to New York at least) and see as many films as possible. First up was Vice. The big surprise, though, was learning the local theater had added alcohol to its concession stand menu. Right then and there, we decide that we needed two Jack & Coke slurpees. They were $8 each and absolutely worth it.

The Most Perfect Flats Ever: $45.21
Another thing I like to do when I’m in Ohio: Hit up Nordstrom Rack. This being during the lull between Christmas and New Year’s, the store was kicking off its holiday clearance sale, so I went directly to the red-sticker items. I struck out when it came to apparel, but was much luckier in the shoe section, where I found a pair of Vince’s minimalist “Maxwell” flats. I’d been eyeing those shoes for a long time—the cream supple leather and rounded shape reminds me of Phoebe Philo-era Céline—but I kept holding out until the original $225 price was reduced. That lead me to this moment: $60.28, with an additional 25 percent off. Of course I got them.

Vince “Maxwell” Flats, $45.21

The Petite-Friendly Trousers I Bought Because I Was Already On a Roll, Dammit: $59.99
At this point, I was pretty set on not buying any more clothes, but I had been in need of new trousers. I’m petite with a curvy waist, so this is a particularly tricky category to shop for. I need a cropped leg, prefer an elastic high waist, and like a wide-leg. I saw these Lou & Grey ones on sale, and they fit the bill (plus, were on sale). I had a gift card, so I went for it. Okay, now I’m done.

Lena Dunham Speaks Out About Her Breakup With Jack Antonoff

It’s barely been 48 hours since news broke of Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff’s breakup, but the Girls creator already appears to have reached the final stage of the breakup process: the wise and somewhat jaded “posting inspirational things about love on social media” stage. On Tuesday night Dunham logged on to Instagram Live for a philosophical riff on the transcendental qualities of true love.

“I’m wearing this ring that Jack gave me, and I’ll always wear it, because love is a really cool, powerful, eternal thing, and it doesn’t have to be defined the way we in Western culture define it, as beginnings and ends,” Dunham said in the video, according to E! News. “Things can be ‘You’re a drop of water and you reenter the ocean,'” she added. “Anyway, I really love you all, and I’m really thankful for the support, really thankful for the love.” Earlier on Tuesday the Lenny founder reposted a classic postbreakup #inspirational quote on her Instagram page. “❤️ forever love ❤️” she captioned the “#mindbodygram” repost, which reads, “Starting over is the beautiful moment where you choose yourself.”

E! was the first to report the breakup news, which was confirmed by a rep for both Dunham and Antonoff. “It was mutual,” a source said on Monday, adding that the breakup happened in December. “Jack and Lena were growing apart, and it just made sense for them to end their relationship where it was…. They want the best for each other no matter what. They are both moving on.” The duo started dating in 2012; the last red carpet they walked together was at the 2017 Grammy Awards last January.

Although the pair had been notably absent from each other’s social media posts for the past few months, in October 2017, Dunham penned a heartfelt tribute to the Bleachers frontman for Variety. “It’s safe to say that before Jack my life was full of far fewer sights,” she wrote. “He showed me the importance of making political statements using your public platform. He showed me the joy of collaboration.”

Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff Have Broken Up After Five Years of Dating

Lena Dunham and longtime boyfriend Jack Antonoff have ended their five-year relationship, reps for both confirmed to People. Though the breakup was reportedly “amicable,” E! News sources say the couple actually called it off in December and have kept it quiet until now.

There’s no bad blood, however. “It was mutual,” the source claims. “Jack and Lena were growing apart and it just made sense for them to end their relationship where it was.”

The pair, who began dating in 2012 after meeting on a blind date, made their last public appearance as a couple nearly a year ago at a Grammys pre-party. And though they were rarely seen in public together, their affection for one another was always evident. In October, Dunham wrote an essay about her love for Antonoff for Variety to celebrate his entry in the publication’s “New Power of New York” list.

“It’s safe to say that before Jack my life was full of far fewer sights. He showed me the importance of making political statements using your public platform,” she wrote. “He showed me the joy of collaboration. He showed me the magic of his home state of New Jersey and turned the butt of my snotty New Yorker jokes into a glimmering fantasyland. I know he does the same for all the artists he produces for, the fans who come to his shows and the recipients of his love. I try and share nicely.”

For his part, Antonoff told Vulture in 2014 that he felt an instant connection to the actress, activist, and director. “I told Lena everything about my whole life, because when you really like someone, you want them to know everything about you,” he said.

Dunham and Antonoff last appeared on social media together in October, when Dunham shared a photo of the two hugging with the caption, “Since I dyed my hair blue he sings a song about how I am a troll looking for some trolls snacks and troll friends and he’s not wrong.”

So This Is Apparently Why Jack Had to Die in 'Titanic'

One of the most poignant moments in Titanic—which is turning the big 2-0—is, of course, when Rose has to let Jack go once they come to the conclusion that they both cannot share the floating board that will ultimately save one and only one life. (Of course, it sure seems like they could have huddled on it together, but hey, that’s up to director James Cameron and the props department and Cameron has corrected my absolutely child-level knowledge of physics and pointed out it’s a matter of buoyancy, not space, but ah, the loss of young love.) In any case, we’ve wrestled with the untimely collapse of these star-crossed lovers for the better part of two decades, and Cameron himself is here to clear up any lingering doubts. And also he is here to chastise us for still being obsessed with it (sorry not sorry).

In an interview with Vanity Fair published on Sunday, he says that the reason Jack had to die is that on page 147 of the script, Jack dies. Which like, come on—we weren’t there on handout day and no one sent us notes.

He then expands a bit. “I think it’s all kind of silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later. But it does show that the film was effective in making Jack so endearing to the audience that it hurts them to see him die,” he told Vanity Fair. Yeah, no kidding. That pile of crumpled tissues every time I watch isn’t because I keep spilling my wine.

“Had he lived,” Cameron continues. “The ending of the film would have been meaningless. . . . The film is about death and separation; he had to die. So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons.”

But…but…the door! “Art” could have supported them when your physics could not!

Fine. If it’s for art, well, Vive le cinéma! And if this is the Romeo and Juliet of the sexually repressed Edwardian era, we can maybe accept it. At least they had that steamy time in the back of that car. Good on them!

But, IDK, maybe a smokestack would have been better? That water was cold.

P.S. Titanic is coming back to theaters in December. You’re welcome.
