Princess Eugenie Broke Royal Tradition With Her Second Wedding Dress


ICYMI, Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank on Friday (October 12), and by all accounts, the second Royal Wedding looked pretty incredible from start to finish. For the actual ceremony, she wore a stunning collared gown by designed by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, which was full of poignant details, like embroidery representing places that are close to her heart (a shamrock for Ireland, for example) and an open back that showed off a scar from a childhood scoliosis operation. But it wouldn’t be a Royal Wedding without an outfit change—and Princess Eugenie’s second dress broke tradition in a big way.

For the couple’s evening wedding reception, Princess Eugenie opted for a custom gown by an American designer, Zac Posen—a surprising choice, given it’s customary for British royals to wear British designers for such occasions. (Meghan Markle changed into a Stella McCartney ensemble, while Kate Middleton chose a second Alexander McQueen design by Sarah Burton for their own post-ceremony festivities.) That wasn’t the only way she deviated from tradition: Instead of classic white or ivory, her second dress was blush-toned. And the result is gorgeous.

Posen’s known for his romantic, ethereal designs—and this one was no different: Princess Eugenie’s dress was made from plissé silk (from a British mill, naturally), drawn into elegant, almost Art Deco pleats from neck to waist before cascading down to sweep the floor. It’s Old Hollywood meets royal regality—and it’s stunning.

According to the Palace, the blush color is a reference to an English rose. And, because she’s Princess Eugenie of York, there’s a White Rose of York embroidered on the back and shoulder of the dress where the cape is. Truly, it’s all in the details.

Women Inspired by Princess Eugenie Are Sharing Stories of Their Surgery Scars


On Friday, the world marveled over Princess Eugenie‘s royal wedding dress as she married Jack Brooksbank at Windsor Castle. The white gown was designed by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, and featured a folded v-shaped neckline, long sleeves, and what might as well have be a mile-long train. But one of the most important details of her wedding dress was the back, which was cut into a deep v-shape in order to highlight the spinal surgery scar that spans from her neck to her shoulder blades.

Prior to the event, Eugenie shared that she specifically selected a neckline that wouldn’t hide her scar. “I’m patron of [the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Appeal], and I had an operation when I was 12 on my back,” she told ITV. “It’s a lovely way to honor the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this.” She added: “I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.”

It’s safe to say women around the world more than appreciated the gesture—they identified with it. Twitter users immediately began sharing their own experiences with spinal surgery, along with how much the validation of feeling seen meant to them.

Ashley Tait, a 26-year-old hairdresser from Kelso, Scotland, tweeted that Eugenie’s scar makes her feel “ok” about her own. And she tells Glamour that it’s giving her the power to show hers off as well. “I was very surprised—it’s not very often you see someone else who has gone through the same procedure such as scoliosis surgery,” says Tait. “I only really show off my scar if I’m telling the story about my surgery. But now that Princess Eugenie has shown her scar to the world, I feel like I should have the confidence to show mine also.”

Izzy Anstee, a 19-year-old student from London, feels similarly. According to Anstee, she’s struggled with self esteem issues after having surgery for scoliosis when she was 15. Eugenie’s gown, however, is changing her mindset. “Seeing her scar made me feel really empowered,” Anstee tells Glamour. “I’ve felt very self conscious about my scar for quite a few years and would never dream of wearing anything backless. But seeing Eugenie’s dress and how beautiful she looked in it made me realize that maybe I shouldn’t feel the need to hide it.”

While Jennifer Scarpinito, a 38-year-old accountant from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, hasn’t had to receive surgery for scoliosis, she says she feels comfort in knowing that others can relate to what she’s gone through. Plus, she hopes this movement will help women everywhere feel confident in their own skin. “I think [Eugenie] showing her scar will continue to inspire women to feel beautiful and confident no matter what shape or size or pain they may be in. This was the biggest day of her life and she showed who is is both inside and out.”

For Melanie Pollard, 44, administrator in Warrington, Cheshire, UK, it’s a sign of hope for her 5-year-old daughter, who had spinal surgery at 14 months old. “My daughter Connie saw the picture of the scar and was absolutely thrilled that a ‘real life princess’ had a scar on her back just like she did,” she shares. “She thought that was amazing.”

You Have to See Princess Eugenie of York's Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos Royal Wedding Dress


If you thought all the Royal Wedding excitement was done for the year, rejoice! Princess Eugenie of York married Jack Brooksbank today. Like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s, the ceremony took place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. The bride wore a stunning Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos gown, with a silhouette that had a special meaning for the princess.

Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress features a v-shaped back, which exposed her scar from a childhood scoliosis operation. The gown featured a folded neckline and back detail, as well as a full train. WWD reports that the jacquard fabric is also embedded with symbols for Princess Eugenie: Pilotto and De Vos included a thistle to represent Scotland, a shamrock to represent Ireland, a York Rose to represent England, and ivy to represent her home at Kensington Palace with Brooksbank, Ivy Cottage.

Though many brand names were floated ahead of the ceremony (from Erdem to Vivienne Westwood), Princess Eugenie made it clear in an interview with British Vogue that she wasn’t going to spoil the reveal ahead of her wedding date. “I’m not telling anyone who is making it, but I can say it is a British-based designer,” she said.

It’s pretty customary for a British royal wedding to feature a dress made by a British designer: Kate Middleton in Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton, Markle in Givenchy by Clare Waight Keller, Princess Diana in David and Elizabeth Emanuel, Sarah Ferguson in Lindka Cierach… Princess Eugenie did concede to British Vogue, however, that her wedding gown was an pretty easy choice: “[The dress] is the one thing that I was really decisive about. As soon as we announced the wedding, I knew the designer, and the look, straight away. I never thought I’d be the one who knew exactly what I like, but I’ve been pretty on top of it.”

Another royal tradition honored by Princess Eugenie on her wedding day: She topped off her with a sparkly headpiece. She chose to borrow Queen Elizabeth II’s Greville emerald Kokoshnik tiara. According to the Telegraph, it’s made from platinum and features a 93.70-carat center emerald surrounded by six smaller stones, and dates back to 1919.

Brooksbank proposed to Princess Eugenie with an engagement ring featuring a rare padparadscha sapphire surrounded by small diamonds, similar to the one her father, Prince Andrew, gave her mother. “Why I loved it so much is it changes color from every different angle that you look at it, which is what I think of Eugenie—she changes color, and it’s just so amazing,” he told the BBC.

Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank Are Engaged


Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aren’t the only royals tying the knot this year: Buckingham Palace announced this morning that Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank are also engaged.

“The Duke and Duchess of York are delighted to announce the engagement of Princess Eugenie and Mr. Jack Brooksbank,” the official statement reads. “Her Royal Highness and Mr. Brooksbank became engaged in Nicaragua earlier this month. The wedding will take place in the Autumn of 2018 at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, with further details to be announced in due course.”

The location of their wedding, St. George’s Chapel, should sound familiar to you: It’s where Markle and Prince Harry are exchanging their vows on May 19, 2018.

According to The Sun, Brooksbank and Princess Eugenie started dating six years ago after they met at a ski resort in Switzerland. He’s the manager of a trendy nightclub in Mayfair called Mahiki. He reportedly received the Queen’s blessing to marry Princess Eugenie in September 2016 in Balmoral Castle while visiting for Prince Harry’s 32nd birthday.

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, tweeted several sweet messages to the newly-engaged couple. “A total embrace of goodness and joy. We love Jack, and I am so excited to have a son, a brother, and a best friend. Eugenie is one of the finest people I know, and so together it will be pure harmony.”

She later added, “They float with laughter and love…I always say that the river flows well to it’s destiny because of the guidance of a solid rock.”
