Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Allegedly Stole Their New Instagram Handle, and I’m Living for the Drama

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are many things: philanthropists, activists, roast-chicken eaters. But they’re also, according to a new report from the BBC, a couple of thieves. Yup, you read that correctly. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are apparently out here stealing Instagram handles from civilians.

What am I talking about, you ask? Well, let me take you back to earlier this week, when the couple launched their own Instagram account, @sussexroyal. It’s been active for only three days, and yet it’s amassed nearly 4 million followers. That’s a lot of people wanting to see photos of Markle smiling and waving.

But Page Six reports a @sussexroyal account already existed. A driving instructor from the English county of West Sussex, Kevin Keiley, claims that was the name of his IG for three years. No, this isn’t a Kensington Palace family member you don’t know about: Keiley had that handle because of where he lives and his favorite soccer team, Reading FC, which is nicknamed the Royals.

“I got a jokey text from my son, which said, ‘Ha ha, I see your handle has gone then,’” Keiley told BBC’s Radio 1 Newsbeat. “I thought, What’s that all about? He said, ‘Look on Instagram,’ so I looked on Instagram and suddenly my handle wasn’t @sussexroyal anymore. It was @sussexroyal. It had been taken.”

Taken, he says. The queen needs to launch an investigation immediately. Call Liam Neeson! Call Kris Jenner! Ryan Murphy, I’ve found the next true-crime story you should adapt for Netflix.

Keiley says he was “annoyed” no one from the royal family or Instagram reached out about taking his handle. “I didn’t ask for this,” he says. “I’ve had the account for years. It’s not very pleasant.”

For what it’s worth, Instagram did cop to scooping up the name, citing a policy that permits them to make changes to inactive accounts. (Keiley didn’t post much to Instagram prior to this incident.)

Here’s my question: Are Markle and Prince Harry even aware they took this man’s Instagram handle? How did they find out? Given Markle’s preroyal affinity for social media—RIP, The Tig—she seems like the one who would step in with an explanation. She should call Keiley and be like, “We’re so sorry for taking your Instagram handle; here are 3,000 loaves of homemade banana bread as an apology.” This man lost something near and dear to him, after all. He needs answers, as do I.

The plus side to all of this? Keiley’s Twitter following has grown exponentially: from four to more than 200. We love an influencer on the rise.

Anita Hill Has Some Advice for the Senate Judiciary Committee on How to Handle the Kavanaugh Hearings

There is, perhaps, no person in America better suited to weigh in on the current state of Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination hearings than Anita Hill.

In 1991, the law professor found herself in a position similar to that of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford in that both had come forward to accuse a Supreme Court nominee of sexual misconduct. Hill testified about a pattern of sexual harassment during her time working with now-Justice Clarence Thomas, while Ford alleges that Kavanaugh drunkenly assaulted her during a party while they were in high school. (He has denied her allegations, just as Justice Thomas denied ever harassing Hill.)

Ford is reportedly considering testifying at the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings about the matter, pending an FBI investigation requested Tuesday by Ford’s lawyer to “ensure that the crucial facts and witnesses in this matter are assessed in a non-partisan manner.” Hill, having had some experience in this area, is offering some words of wisdom to the Senate Judiciary Committee to get it right this time around.

“Today, the public expects better from our government than we got in 1991, when our representatives performed in ways that gave employers permission to mishandle workplace harassment complaints throughout the following decades,” Hill writes in the New York Times. “That the Senate Judiciary Committee still lacks a protocol for vetting sexual harassment and assault claims that surface during a confirmation hearing suggests that the committee has learned little from the Thomas hearing, much less the more recent #MeToo movement.”

Here are some takeaways from Hill’s powerful op-ed:

Don’t mix messages.

Hill says that confronting sexual harassment and ensuring the integrity of the Supreme Court are not things that are at odds with each other. “Both are aimed at making sure that our judicial system operates with legitimacy,” she writes.

Neutrality is key.

Hill suggests that a neutral body with experience in the subject of sexual misconduct should lead an investigation into Ford’s claims so as not to be tainted by the rampant partisanship we see on almost every current political matter. And after that, senators must rely on the results and act as fact-finders when asking their own questions. “The investigators’ report should frame the hearing,” says Hill. “Not politics or myths about sexual assault.”

Slow down.

Rushing the hearings is a mistake, according to Hill. She says it sends the message that these types of allegations are not important. “Simply put, a week’s preparation is not enough time for meaningful inquiry into very serious charges,” she says.

Say her name.

“Finally, refer to Christine Blasey Ford by her name. She was once anonymous, but no longer is. Dr. Blasey is not simply ‘Judge Kavanaugh’s accuser.’ Dr. Blasey is a human being with a life of her own. She deserves the respect of being addressed and treated as a whole person.”

Hill also wisely points out that Kavanaugh has the benefit of organized support for his side while Christine Blasey Ford will be “outresourced” and that “imbalance may not seem fair.”

While it may be too late to heed all of Hill’s warnings, we can only hope that the process is not as problematic as it was for her in 1991. I remember watching the coverage of those hearings as an almost 16-year-old and taking away the unfortunate message that it was extremely hard to be believed as a woman, no matter how credible your claims.

In the media run-up to Monday’s hearing, it would seem that not a lot has changed. I hope I’m proven wrong.

People Cannot Handle Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas's Maybe-Engagement

In case the complete panic taking place on Twitter right now didn’t clue you in, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are reportedly engaged.

That makes them the latest celebrity couple—following in the footsteps of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson and Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin—to get engaged after what seems like a surprisingly short amount of time. (Two months, in the case of Priyick? Niyanka? Do they even have a couple name yet?)

According to People‘s report, the proposal happened on Chopra’s 36th birthday while the pair were in London. Then, as if an Internet-imploding whirlwind romance weren’t extra enough, Jonas apparently closed down a Tiffany store to pick out the ring for his (maybe) fiancé.

Of course, all of this news is still up in the air, since neither star has confirmed or denied People‘s report, but Chopra’s (now former) director for Bollywood film Bharat did announce, with a super-obvious pun playing off her reported husband-to-be’s name, that she was pulling out of the project. “Yes Priyanka Chopra is no more part of @Bharat_TheFilm & and the reason is very very special, she told us in the Nick of time about her decision and we are very happy for her,” tweeted Ali Abbas Zafar. “Team Bharat wishes @priyankachopra loads of love & happiness for life ???”

Obviously, the news has caused quite the ruckus on social media. Shortly after the story came out, Twitter absolutely lost it, with fans demanding that Jonas serenade Chopra with some classic Jonas Brothers hits at the wedding, lamenting the lack of expedited summer love in their own lives, writing 280-character fan-fic about how it all went down, and generally just flipping out. See some of the funniest reactions, below.
