Halsey Opens Up About Feeling ‘Inadequate’ After Experiencing a Miscarriage

Halsey is ready to talk about her miscarriage, an experience she recently described as “demoralizing.”

In a new interview with The Guardian, the 25-year-old pop star said she regrets sharing this part of her personal journey in the past after some now-deleted social media posts were the target of online abuse.

“It’s the most inadequate I’ve ever felt,” she explained. “Here I am achieving this out-of-control life, and I can’t do the one thing I’m biologically put on this earth to do. Then I have to go onstage and be this sex symbol of femininity and empowerment? It is demoralizing.”

In the past, the singer has been open about her struggles with endometriosis—a condition that causes the tissue that normally lines the uterus to grow outside of it and can lead to infertility in up to half of the women with the diagnosis.

During a 2018 episode of The Doctors, Halsey explained her miscarriage happened while she was on tour.

“Before I could really figure out what that meant to me and what that meant for my future, for my career, for my life, for my relationship, the next thing I knew I was on stage miscarrying in the middle of my concert,” she said. “And the sensation of looking a couple hundred teenagers in the face while you’re bleeding through your clothes and still having to do the show, and realizing in that moment that I never want to make that choice ever again of doing what I love or not being able to because of this disease.”

Thankfully, she told The Guardian that her latest prognosis is positive and motherhood is “looking like something that’s gonna happen for me. That’s a miracle.”

In January, while promoting her Manic album, Halsey also told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that she wrote the lyrics to her song “More”—which is about her deep desire to have a baby—after doctors informed her that her treatments and healthier lifestyle have made it possible for her to have a healthy pregnancy.

“It was a moment where I felt like I had leveled up in life. It was this like, ascension into a different kind of womanhood,” she said. “I wrote the lyrics to ‘More’ in like, four minutes or less. It just spilled out of me.”

Halsey Showed Off Unshaven Armpits on the Cover of 'Rolling Stone'

Over the years, Halsey has joined the ranks of celebrities speaking out against prescribed beauty ideals and norms—and that includes grooming choices, like removing body hair. If she doesn’t want to, she doesn’t, and she’s proud about it. After a troll reposted the pic with an “LOL” sticker over her unshaven underarm, she cooly responded to them on Twitter, “It’s an armpit you’ve put a sticker over. Not sure what else there is here to explain?” Now, she’s taken her advocacy for skipping shave day one step further by showing off unshaven armpits on the latest cover of Rolling Stone. In the shot, the “Without Me” singer poses in a white tank with her arms behind her head and her armpits on full display. Halsey of course posted the cover shot on her ‘gram—and people are living for it.

“There is so much yes about this picture idk where to start,” Demi Lovato commented. “Rockstar status,” fellow singer (and Halsey collaborator) Benny Blanco wrote.

Maggie Rogers was excited too: “Here for this armpit hair,” she wrote. Check out the Rolling Stone cover for yourself, below:

Singer Zara Larsson also took to Twitter to praise Halsey’s decision not to shave for the shoot: “I loooove the fact that they didn’t edit the armpits like most magazines would do. Women are not little babies who don’t have body hair. Stunning cover.”

Meanwhile, fans also applauded Halsey for embracing her body hair.

In another high-profile unshaven armpit moment, Amandla Sternberg walked the red carpet at the BFI Film Festival last October, wearing a stunning Valentino gown that showed off their underarm hair. With their trademark sense of humor, they posted a pic to their ‘gram of the look, writing “#drama #armpit” in the caption. Happily, per Halsey’s pic, it seems people are becoming more receptive to a little bit of perfectly natural body hair.

Halsey Is Just ‘Not Having It’

In “Without Me,” Halsey sings, “Said I’d catch you if you fall. And if they laugh, then fuck ’em all.” It marks a pivotal moment in her career: After her breakup with G-Eazy, she felt immense pressure to comment publicly because she’d been so transparent about her life in the past. She thought to herself, So how are you going to do it? Are you going to stream live and start talking about everything? Are you going to go on a Twitter rant? Are you going to flag off on him on TMZ? Or are you going to make a song? “The biggest lesson I learned was to make art, not headlines,” she says. “Because it can become quite easy, in the social media generation, to go from being a musician to becoming a personality.”

“Without Me” is about caring for someone so much that you lose sight of yourself, Halsey explains. “I call myself a collector; I collect things from people and use them to widen my artistic repertoire, so that I am writing from a culmination of experiences from the world,” she says. “But I’m an imitator as well, because I’m so passionately putting myself in other people’s shoes all the time.” Being a chameleon is not always a good thing, she admits. “I beat myself up for a long time,” she says. “I was like, You’re fucking spineless. Why do you have to become everyone you’re around? Why do you have to imitate all of their interests, all of their fucking mannerisms, and their personality? Why can’t you just know who the fuck you are and be strong in that? But I realized that will never happen. So instead I started surrounding myself with people I admire and really like.”

And perhaps those people are helping her find herself. “Without Me” is the most exposed Halsey’s ever been; unlike her previous songs, it’s not part of a concept album with a fantasy narrative that she can hide her true intentions behind. The vulnerability is paying off—the track is her biggest hit to date and makes use of the lower, huskier registers of Halsey’s voice, which somehow sound wounded, angry, wistful, and defiant at the same time. Along with Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next,” it’s paving the way for a new generation of empowered female pop stars who are taking control of their narratives, unspooling the darkness in their personal lives, and emerging with empowering, unfiltered masterpieces.

The two songs might be fighting neck-and-neck for the number one spot on the charts, but Halsey says she doesn’t buy into the narrative of competition between her and Grande. “We live in a world where women are required to be so fucking original, it’s crazy,” she says. “There are so many male artists who are regurgitations of each other: They all fucking dress the same, they all have the same stylist, they all wear the same fucking clothes, they write with the same writers.”

Her voice rises passionately as she continues, “I will say one thing about my generation of artists: We are just not fucking having it. Lorde, Ariana…if you open any of our text messages at any given time, all of us are just like, ‘Yo, I love your new record. When are you leaving for tour?’ We’re so supportive.”

Halsey Is Just Not Having It

Our allotted time together is coming to an end and we realize we’ve been walking in circles, unable to find the exit. “We could just be bougie and call my driver,” Halsey suggests. Moments later a black SUV arrives to pick us up. Halsey slides into the back seat, humming a tune under her breath. I ask her whether her next album will continue the trajectory she’s set with “Without Me.” “When you’re 19 the only thing you care about is how the world revolves around you. When you’re 25 the only thing you care about is how the world revolves in general,” she says. “I’ve written a lot of inward music so far—it‘s been a reflection of me, my mental health, my experience. Then as my voice and my problems started to grow, it was like, OK, I can put this into my art. I think moving forward into this [next] record, it will be more outwardly existential, as opposed to introspective.”

Halsey Calls Out the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show’s 'Lack of Inclusivity'

Halsey, who performed at this year’s Victoria Secret Fashion Show, called out the annual lingerie spectacle on Instagram Sunday night (December 2).

“I have adored the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show since I was young,” the “Bad at Love” singer posted as the runway special was airing on ABC. “Performing this year alongside other amazing artists and hardworking models/friends was supposed to be the best night of my year. However, after I filmed the performance, some comments were made regarding the show that I simply cannot ignore.”

Halsey is most likely referring to the controversial comments Victoria’s Secret chief marketing officer Ed Razek made about the show’s not-so-inclusive casting history. “It’s like, why doesn’t your show do this? Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy,” he said.

Several transgender models took issue with Razek’s statement, including Andreja Pejic, who wrote on Instagram, “It’s really sad when you see powerful people in our industry holding such backward views and being so comfortable in expressing them on a public platform.”

Now Halsey is speaking out. “As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have no tolerance for a lack of inclusivity,” she wrote. “Especially not one motivated by stereotype. If you’re on my page because you watched my performance tonight, please allow me to instead direct your attention to GLSEN: An organization that offers services aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ youth. And with respect to those youth targeted by these comments in a world where they have been made to feel ‘other,’ I have made a sizable donation in their honor.”

She continued, “If you are a trans person reading this, and these comments made you feel alienated or invalidated, please know that you have allies. We stand in solidarity, and complete and total acceptance is the only ‘fantasy’ that I support.”

Ariana Grande and Halsey Are Texting Each Other About Their Hit Songs

If we had to pick a theme for 2018, women championing other women would have to be near the top of the list. From Hollywood to Washington, D.C., we keep seeing examples that prove the tired, old tropes about catfights, comparisons, and jealousy wrong.

Latest case in point: Ariana Grande and Halsey‘s supportive pop-star friendship. The two women are, quite literally, at the top of their careers right now (so far, that is): Grande’s latest song “thank u, next” became her first single to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Halsey’s “Without You” just hit No. 1 on iTunes, knocking Grande from the perch.

But there’s no animosity between the two: Grande even shared a sweet text conversation between the two superstars on her Instagram Stories. In it, Halsey writes: “Honestly just happy it’s us rn. The ladies need us. Time for an uprising.” She adds, “Attention world: we are no longer taking ur shit.” Grande then replies: “AT ALL.”

Both women have gone through very public breakups of late (Grande with Pete Davidson and Halsey with G-Eazy), so it’s great to see them looking out for each other—and celebrating the amazing music that often comes from emotional struggles. “It’s like this is really me talking about my life. It kind of gave me like an existential crisis as an artist a little bit, because I’ve prided myself on being an artist who’s authentic and writes about her life and all that stuff,” Halsey has said of her hit song. “And then when I made this, and I felt just how bad it hurt.”

The singers’ exchange is wonderful, but each of the women has made a point to support other women in music by standing up for their fellow female artists, even when the press tries to pit them against each other. Back in 2017, Halsey and Demi Lovato squashed rumors of a feud with one Instagram post. And nobody has Nicki Minaj’s back like Grande.

Now that we know how tight these two are, could a music collaboration be far behind? Fingers crossed.
