We don’t have to tell you that award shows are fancy affairs. As one of Hollywood’s greatest traditions, it’s the one time of the year you can expect celebrities to really do it big. After all, we’re talking about black-tie parties that give away vouchers for $1,900 vampire breast lifts and luxury TP in their gift bags. So it’d be unsurprising if the beauty products too were accessible to only the 1 percent, right?
While that might the case for “penis facials,” many of the hair, makeup, and skin care products glam squads use during the awards circuit are refreshingly affordable. Brands often broker deals with makeup artists and hairstylists to use their newest launches for red carpet looks. And why not? As the “who are you wearing” question proves, celebrities on the red carpet are essentially walking billboards. Plus, this is also good news for the rest of us. We might not be able to drop thousands on a designer gown, but $10 on a foundation Gina Rodriguez looked incredible in all night? You bet we want—and can have—that.

Sandra Oh had a very good night at the 2019 Golden Globes: She kicked off her duties as host with an incredibly heartfelt speech, made some hilarious jokes, and then went on to collect her own trophy for Best Actress in a TV Drama, becoming the first Asian-American woman to win that category in almost 40 years. Throughout all of this, Oh wore a trio of incredible gowns that were quite meaningful themselves.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Elizabeth Saltzman, Oh’s stylist, explained that they decided to showcase exclusively “strong female designers” through the actress’ wardrobe at the Golden Globes. “I decided to think of things that would make her feel confident and empowered and beautiful,” she said.
The two women who best communicated that, Saltzman added, were Donatella Versace and Stella McCartney. “I don’t know a more fearless, bold person who works harder than Donatella,” she said. “Donatella really gives. She’s super empowering, and super fun, and has been through stuff.” McCartney, meanwhile, helped them create “the most amazing kapow! dress” that “[felt] like something out of the great Hollywood films of yesteryear.”

The 2019 Golden Globes had its ups and downs, but overall it was a fun show. That’s thanks in large part to Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, who emceed the evening with an energy that was off the charts. They opted for humor over politics—a stark contrast to last year’s ceremony, where attendees wore black in honor of Time’s Up and #MeToo. Activism was still there on the red carpet, though, with celebrities wearing ribbons in support of the aforementioned movements.
Their shift in focus was intentional. “I know when Andy and I were talking about the feeling that I really want to bring, and really focus on, is just to have a moment of joy. Honestly, with who is going to be in that audience, the nominees this year, it excites me so tremendously for mostly because of the diversity in that room,” Oh said of her and Samberg’s hosting plans for the Globes.
And that’s exactly what happened. The Golden Globes were, all things considered, a very joyous celebration of the best movies and TV shows of the year. Below, check out all the biggest moments from the evening.
1. All of Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg’s positive burns. Instead of insulting the attendees, Oh and Samberg hit people with compliments. “Michael B. buff AF! You’re a snack, Michael,” they said to Michael B. Jordan, which…I see no lies. “The last time I checked, she resided in Heaven,” Oh said of Gina Rodriguez. It was so wholesome! Kindness!
2. Oh and Samberg roasting Gaga for her “100 people in a room” comment. “There can be 100 people in the room, and 99 don’t believe in you. But I had this one incredible talent with me,” Gaga said about Bradley Cooper frequently on her press tour for A Star Is Born, to the point where it became a viral meme. Oh and Samberg winked at this quote during their opening monologue, and Gaga responded in good spirits.
3. Oh talking about what hosting the Golden Globes means for visibility. “Right now, this moment is real. Because I see you. I see you. All of these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else,” she said.
4. Emma Stone yelling “I’m sorry” after Oh’s joke about whitewashing films. Stone caught heat in 2015 for portraying a half-Asian woman in the movie Aloha.
5. Carol Burnett accepts the first-ever Carol Burnett Award. She received a standing ovation, naturally. “My thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I’m really gobsmacked by this,” she said. “Does this mean I get to accept it every year?” Yes! Yes, it does!
6. Taylor Swift popped up on stage and presented Best Original Song to Lady Gaga. They wrapped their arms around each other afterwards and walked offstage together. It’s official: 2019 is the year of the pop icons.
7. Lady Gaga winning Best Original Song for “Shallow.” No other song could’ve won this, honestly. Mark Ronson, one of the writer-producers behind the track, properly worshipped Gaga in his speech.
8. Fiji Water Girl. The Fiji Water model became the night’s biggest meme, photobombing several celebrities on the red carpet.

9. Regina King vowing to include 50 percent women in all her future projects. She said this while accepting her award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for If Beale Street Could Talk. “I challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power…to challenge yourselves and do the same,” she said.
10. Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph’s on-stage banter. They made proposal jokes, Hollywood jokes—all kinds of jokes, really. I nominate them as hosts for next year’s show.
11. Sandra Oh winning Best Lead Actress in a Television Series, Drama. She became the first Asian woman to score this honor. And her father gave her a standing ovation! It was truly the sweetest thing.
12. Sam Elliott’s short speech about A Star Is Born. Followed by a short clip teasing A Star Is Born. I cried. You cried. We all cried. (He was nominated tonight for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film.)

13. Melissa McCarthy passed out ham sandwiches to attendees. “I’ve been handing them out to everyone,” McCarthy told Variety. “Next year, I’m bringing hot dogs.” Olivia Colman even thanked McCarthy for the sandwiches during her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.
A hot mic loose on tonight’s Golden Globes red carpet seemed to catch This Is Us star Chrissy Metz in an awkward moment. At the end of her interview on the Facebook Live pre-show, Metz was asked to help introduce Alison Brie. (The Glow actress was about to be interviewed elsewhere on the carpet.) But it, uh, didn’t go quite as planned.
“Do you know a girl named Alison Brie?” one of the co-hosts asked Metz. “Do I?” she replied. When the camera panned to focus on Brie, some close listeners seemed to hear Metz add, “She’s such a bitch.” The Internet, of course, soon took notice:
Brie hasn’t publicly responded to the moment, though Vanity Fair writer and reporter Nicole Sperling reports that she asked Brie about it. “Just asked Alison Brie about this,” she wrote on Twitter. “She had not heard about Metz’s comments and seemed very confused by the entire matter. ‘But why?,’ she asked. ‘I know her. I saw her on the carpet and I told her how beautiful she looked.'”
But while fans and tabloids dissected the clip, Metz took to Twitter to address the moment—and shut it down. “It’s terribly unfortunate anyone would think much less run a story that was completely fabricated! I adore Alison and would never say a bad word about her, or anyone!” she wrote in a retweet of an Us Weekly article about the incident. “I sure hope she knows my heart.”
Several of Metz’s friends and fans also took to social media to defend Metz. “Folks, I’ve known @ChrissyMetz for three years and I have NEVER heard her say a mean word about anyone. Move on,” director and producer Ken Olin wrote.
Not all heroes wear capes: some of them carry trays of Fiji Water. Such is the case for a mysterious brunette woman at the 2019 Golden Globes, who it seems was hired by Fiji Water for the event but ended up photobombing several celebrities’ photos instead, including Julianne Moore, Alyssa Milano, and Jeff Bridges.
The Internet quickly took to this woman and dubbed her “Fiji Water Girl.” Everything about her is iconic—from the way she’s holding that tray of water to her stare, which is clearly saying, “My blood type is Fiji Water and yours should be, too.”
