The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 13 Recap: Now That's an Ending


When Jed arrives at the rose ceremony, he comes with his guitar in hand. Reader, I swear I screamed, “NO HE DID NOT” at the sight. “Talking’s hard sometimes for me,” he tells Hannah, before launching into a song with lyrics such as “we always knew it’s me and you” and “baby, time stands still for us.” Hannah loves it.

“I’ve always prayed for my future husband,” she says. She’s questioned why some relationships turned out the way they did, but now she knows it was all to lead her to Jed. “I have lived 25 years of my life without you,” he says, “and I don’t want to go another day without you in my life.” He gets down on one knee, she says yes.

“We did it!” Hannah cheers. “That’s awesome,” Jed mumbles.

Of course, that’s not the end of the story. When we return from a commercial break, we’re treated to a few behind-the-scenes home videos of Hannah and Jed together after the proposal. “I thought I was getting someone sweet and honest,” Hannah says. “And that’s not the case.” The day after the proposal, she reveals, Jed admitted that he had been “hanging out” with someone the week before he left for the show. He claimed he had broken it off, but they were never boyfriend and girlfriend. Hannah was annoyed, but she thought it was something they could work through. And then that People article came out.

“I love the person I got engaged to,” Hannah says. “I don’t know how I feel about this person.”

And so, the Bachelorette producers have arranged for the two to meet up in Los Angeles so she can confront him about it. Right away, Hannah asks what really happened. Jed’s version of events is this: He was hanging out with this woman, they hooked up a few times, and then went on a weekend getaway together because he “got a cabin for free.” They stopped by his parents’ home on the way back from the trip, but only because they lived near the cabin. He never “put a label” on their relationship or called her his girlfriend—and it’s clear he thinks that absolves him. Oh, and he was sleeping with other women during this time.

It gets worse: This woman threw Jed a whole-ass surprise birthday party that involved all of his friends and family, as well as a trip to the Bahamas (from her parents!) as a gift. “And you don’t call that dating?” Hannah asks, incredulous.

According to Jed, he told her he was recruited for The Bachelorette and was thrown off that she would still want to be with somebody who was considering going on a dating reality show. Hannah presses him, and he admits that, OK, he might have told her he was only doing it as “a music thing.” Plus, he says, he never thought he’d actually like the Bachelorette.

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 12 Recap: And Then There Were Two…


Of course, Tyler instantly charms the fam. “Tyler seems to be the real deal,” Robert says. Hannah’s parents tell her as much. “I think he has good intentions,” Robert says. “There’s so much about him I like,” Suzanne gushes. Their confidence in Tyler inspires Hannah to tell him she’s falling in love with him. The smile on his face at this news! My God. It’s like staring into the sun, or staring at a really hot guy smiling.

The family has to meet Jed the next day, but they’re skeptical. Tyler set the bar so high—how could Jed be better? (Answer: He cannot.) And Jed seems a little nervous as soon as he arrives, stumbling over his words and giving sort of rambling answers to their questions. When Robert asks Jed about his goals in life, he talks about his songwriting career (without mentioning, oh, how Hannah might fit into that). Then Robert asks Jed if he might be able to financially provide for Hannah (which, ugh, the patriarchy). Jed gives a vague answer about wanting various income streams, then mentions that he recently signed a deal to write a jingle for a dog food company. To him, that was a sign his career’s on the right track.

However, it’s Hannah’s mom who has the best shade. When she sits down with Jed, she comments that he’s been in Nashville “a while” without hitting it big. Later, she tells her daughter, “He has qualities.” Qualities! Not good, not bad, just qualities. I think Suzanne must be feeling very whelmed about Jed.

Ultimately, though, Suzanne says it’s Hannah’s decision. That said, she would pick Tyler because, I mean, she has eyes and ears. “I knew this was going to happen,” Hannah complains, sounding every bit an angsty teenager being told she can’t go out on a Friday night. “I’m telling you what I see as a mom,” Suzanne replies. “I want to see you with somebody that will love you like you deserve to be loved.”

Hannah’s dad tells her that Tyler was more direct with his answers. Hannah presses her dad to be more specific, so he complains that Jed thinks “the dog food jingle” is enough to provide for Hannah. LOL. Hannah points out that she plans on being successful, so it doesn’t matter whether or not Jed is the breadwinner. (Woo, Hannah!) Hannah’s dad, however, insists “the man of the house still has his obligations.”

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 11 Recap: The Men Tell All


We don’t find out who gets the roses, though—that comes next week. Instead, we go back to the studio for the rest of the Men Tell All special. Luke is invited out on stage first, to a smattering of applause. I could get into the specifics of every insane thing he says, but really it’s more of the same: His words were misconstrued, Hannah wasn’t giving him an opportunity to speak, blah blah blah.

“I don’t get to see anything that happens with Hannah on the other dates,” he says at one point. “I don’t get to see her straddle or mount or swap saliva with other guys. That’s not easy, and I wouldn’t want someone that I’m literally getting fitted for a suit to propose in and I’m finding out that the night before my one-on-one time with her she’s having sex. And that’s not something I want in a future wife.”

Every time Chris asks a question, Luke takes an excruciating amount of time to answer. But the dead air doesn’t make his responses any better—he still keeps spouting the same bullshit. Luke is willing to admit he was arrogant…but not much else. “If I could go back, I wouldn’t change a thing,” he says. (Until exactly one commercial break later, when he walks that back: “Obviously, if I could go back I would change a lot.”)

It’s all very bad (and annoying that he’s even given a platform for this long), but it gets worse when Luke says he felt like he was on a “rescue mission” for Hannah. At that, Devin comes onto stage unannounced. “My blood has been boiling,” he tells Luke about watching from backstage. “There are men who want a strong, independent woman. And there are men who want a woman they can control. I feel, right now, that you you are the man that wants to control a woman so you can feel better about yourself. I’m sorry but that’s not a man.”

I’ve been watching The Bachelorette for a long time, and I honestly can’t remember seeing a contestant call out another dude so plainly for being misogynistic. It’s incredible—made even more surprising by the fact that Devin wasn’t known for being a particularly outspoken member of the cast this season. “The only person who needed rescuing was Hannah from you,” he says before leaving the stage.

Luke replies, “The last thing that I want and the last thing I’ll ever do is control a woman.” But then immediately says, “Although a man is supposed to lead and guide a woman in a relationship.” Reader, I gasped.

When the rest of the guys—minus Peter, Luke, and Jed—join from backstage, they immediately take Luke to task. Mike says it’s clear Luke has learned nothing and calls him a narcissist and misogynist. “I think your future wife is going to be a prisoner of you if you don’t learn how to change,” he says. Even sweet, doe-eyed Connor tells Luke to fuck off. “You’re a liar, manipulator, controlling, and you honestly are a psychopath.”

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 10 Recap: A Note on Tyler, Luke, and Sex in the Fantasy Suites


Sadly, that’s where the positive moments of the episode end because the final two dates are with Jed and Luke. Jed goes first, but he and Hannah spend most of their time talking about Luke. If you’re this close to finding your future husband, he asks, why keep someone you’re uncertain about around? She stumbles over her answer before finally telling Jed that she and Luke have a connection; she knows it’s hard to understand, but he’ll have to respect it. “You’ve got to let me figure it out,” she says.

Over dinner, she thanks him for bringing up the Luke stuff. Jed admits it’s hard for him to understand how she can be falling in love with him but still holding onto someone who’s been toxic to her and everyone else. It makes him wonder if there are other bad situations she won’t let go of out in the real world. “I’m just really freaking sure about you, and I don’t want to be unsure,” he says. She gets so frustrated at that she leaves the table.

When they both sit back at the table, Jed insists that he trusts her decisions and has her back no matter what. Hannah says his conversation scared her, but ultimately it shows her that he cares. They go to the fantasy suite.

The next day, Hannah and Luke take a helicopter to Santorini. It’s fairly uneventful, though I did a spit take when Luke, a man who told Hannah that he was falling in love with her on their second date, says he doesn’t take “dropping the L word” lightly.

Their dinner that night starts off well enough, until Luke opens his mouth. “I want to make sure that from now on things are known how they’re supposed to be,” he says. “So let’s talk about sex.” Sex is a beautiful thing only when it’s in the “guidelines of a marriage,” he says. He concedes that he’s been abstaining from sex for almost four years—and he knows she’s not a virgin either—but he wants to know that she won’t be having sex with the other guys in the fantasy suites. He adds he’d “100%” go home if she did.

While I screamed at my television and threw my phone across the couch in horror, Hannah keeps her cool. “Sex is a very big deal to me,” she replies. That said, she doesn’t agree with him. “The way that you just said that…it’s like, why do you have the right to do that because you’re not my husband,” she explains. She feels he’s judging her when he doesn’t have the right too. “Pride is a sin too, and I feel like this is a pride thing.”

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 9, Recap: Hannah Refuses to Give Out a Final Rose


Speaking of other relationships, Hannah travels to Jupiter, Florida for her hometown date with Tyler. And he’s planned a great day: rubbing sunscreen all over his abs. OK, fine, that’s just the start; though I doubt Hannah would complain if the day began and ended there.

The date only goes uphill from there: Hannah gets to sit on Tyler’s lap while he drives a boat named the “Reel Clean” and points out the local sights, followed by a swim (and make out session) in the sea. “It’s super hot kissing Tyler,” Hannah says, to the shock of no one.

I would have loved more time watching Tyler splash around the ocean, but I guess Hannah does have to meet his family. And this hometown is especially emotional because Tyler’s dad was suffering from a paralyzed vocal chord—and Tyler hasn’t seen him since he left for the show, so it’s been hard to not know how the recovery’s been going.

So, of course, I tear up when Tyler and his dad are reunited. When the two sit down for a chat, Tyler admits he’s taking this process seriously because he wants his dad to be able to see him with a wife and kids someday. His dad replies that he hasn’t seen Tyler this happy in a long time. And I’m crying again.

Hannah’s talk with Dad is just as sweet—apparently Tyler hasn’t had many girlfriends, so it’s good but scary to see him so enamored. Damn, as if we needed another reason to love Tyler. Before Hannah leaves, she and Tyler make out in the backseat of an SUV while the driver stares forward and does his best to pretend like it’s not happening. A pro!

The third hometown date is with Luke in Gainesville, Georgia. He takes her to a church meeting, where he stands up and shares the story we’ve heard before: how he was “tangled up in sin” until God spoke to him in the shower. It feels more like a motivational speech than anything else, but Hannah seems into it? When they break out into smaller groups, everyone praises Luke so much it feels like a set up. Um, have you all met Luke? Maybe they thought Hannah was asking about some amazing dude named Duke?

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 8 Recap: Could Mike Be the Next Bachelor?


Sorry to partially spoil tonight’s episode of The Bachelorette in the headline, but I think you all knew Mike wasn’t endgame for Hannah. He should have been, though, considering three out of the four remaining guys have some sort of controversy following them. Don’t let us down, Tyler—you’re all we have left! What else can I spoil about the ep for you? Dig in.

We’re in the Netherlands this week, and Hannah thinks everyone has moved “past the drama.” Sure, just one quick question: Is Luke P. still here?

Also, picking Jed for the first one-on-one date of the week doesn’t seem to help these dudes move “past the drama.” When Hannah asks Jed out, the other guys look like a kid being picked last for kickball. “He didn’t bring his guitar, did he?” someone quips as they walk away.

Hannah and Jed’s date is fairly uneventful, however. They take a boat ride, walk around Amsterdam, and make out. At one point they talk with an older couple who have been together 54 years, but only knew each other about 10 days before they married. “It must have been written in the stars,” the woman tells them. It’s a sweet story, but also obviously a plant. Right? Or am I that cynical?

Who could say; regardless, the woman’s story inspires Jed to reiterate to Hannah that he’s falling for her. She says it’s hard to be open about how she’s really feeling, but she is excited about their relationship. And when they meet up for dinner that night, the conversation picks up where it left off: Hannah has apparently been holding back her feelings because she doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Jed says he understands, but all of the pressure shouldn’t be on her alone—he wants to take some of it on because that’s what a partner does. “I want you to feel like you can open up,” he says. And so, Hannah admits she’s falling in love with him.

“I feel the same way. I’m falling in love with you,” he replies. She gives him a rose, which means she’ll be going to Jed’s hometown next week.

A Bachelor or Bachelorette admitting they’re falling in love before the fantasy suites is rare and a big deal on this show, but Tyler still has a horse in this race. No, literally: Their date involves horseback riding through the Hague.
