Jonathan Van Ness Geeked Out Over All the Celebs at the Emmys, and I've Never Felt More Seen


Last night’s Emmys received a much-needed dose of electricity when Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, Bobby Berk, Antoni Porowski, and Karamo Brown (a.k.a Queer Eye’s Fab Five) hit the stage to present the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. No one was more excited to be there than Van Ness, though, who spent basically all of Emmys weekend geeking out over his favorite celebrities—so, in other words, doing exactly what you or I would do.

It all started at the Annual Netflix Emmy Nominee Toast on September 15 in Los Angeles. In between chatting up his Queer Eye co-stars, Van Ness found some time to kick it with Diane Keaton. Just look at his smile in the pic, below. He’s very aware he’s in the presence of royalty and no doubt asked Keaton, “Where the hell is your Oscar for Something’s Gotta Give?“

Van Ness posted the same photo to his Instagram account and captioned it, “The defining moment of my life, like you guys. When I looked up and saw none other than Miss Diane Keaton, I clutched my pearls and gasped in a silently audible way from my heart chakra I’ve never heard. My fashion icon, my First Wives Club icon, my world. Omg.” Don’t tell me you wouldn’t post literally the same caption verbatim if you were in this situation. We all would. We all love First Wives Club.

At the same party, Van Ness also posed for a pic with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, writing on Instagram, “Eleven degrees of OMFG.” Relatable content.

The actual Emmys were just as exciting. Here, Van Ness is pictured laughing with Mandy Moore and (in my mind) thinking, “Please let me style your grandma Rebecca wig on This Is Us.”

Van Ness later snapped a pic with The Crown star Claire Foy and called her “mom” on Instagram. Spoken like a true super-fan!

And he essentially wrote the same thing about his photo with Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke: “Found my dragon mum.” (Van Ness created a known parody series of GoT called Gay of Thrones).

I’ve never felt more seen! Thank you, Jonathan Van Ness, for letting me know it’s OK I haven’t stopped crying about A Star Is Born since the trailer dropped. Deep down, we’re all just a bunch of stans.

Evan Rachel Wood Brought Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Amanda Nguyen as Her Plus-One to the 2018 Emmys


There wasn’t an organized Time’s Up or #MeToo protest at the 2018 Emmy Awards like there was at this year’s Golden Globes, but Evan Rachel Wood still found a way to speak out. While attending the ceremony on Monday night, Wood brought as her plus-one Amanda Nguyen, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in June for her work on behalf of survivors of sexual assault.

It’s especially notable given that many celebrities brought activists as their plus-ones to other award shows earlier this year, at the very forefront of the Time’s Up movement, but Wood was the only one to do so at the 2018 Emmys.

In an interview with E! News‘s Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet, Wood and Nguyen spoke about their work together; earlier this year, they both testified in front of Congress in support of the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights. “I think we’re at a crucial time in history right now for women, and especially for civil rights. You know, if I have even a little bit of power right now, I want to use it for good,” Wood said.

“I’m also here supporting the ACLU and the fight to reunite immigrant families separated at the border — that’s why I’m wearing the blue ribbon,” she added. “I just feel like it’s important. It’s what I’m called to do. Amanda’s certainly been someone who’s inspired me to do more.”

Nguyen also explained how she and Wood first met. “I gave the speech at the Women’s March and Evan was there. I saw Evan speak, of course, and then we just connected,” she said. “I’m so grateful, again, and it just makes such a difference when we get platforms like this to discuss issues.”

Nguyen, 26, is the founder of Rise, a nonprofit organization that works to expand the rights of assault survivors. In 2016, she helped to draft the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights, which sought to establish a universal standard for care for survivors and subsequently passed unanimously through Congress.

2018 Emmys: Producer and Director Glenn Weiss Proposes to His Girlfriend During Acceptance Speech


Producer and director Glenn Weiss arrived at Monday night’s 2018 Emmys with a few statuettes already under his belt, but he ended the ceremony with one more Emmy and a brand-new fiancée. About halfway through the show, Weiss was awarded the trophy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for his position as the director of this year’s Academy Awards. Though his acceptance speech started out fairly run-of-the-mill, it soon took a shocking, heartwarming turn.

After doling out a few thank-yous, Weiss began speaking of his late mother, whom he said would’ve been proud of his big win. “Part of my heart is broken I don’t think it will ever be repaired. But she’s in me and she always will be. Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jan. Jan, you are the sunshine in my life. And Mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine,” he said, before becoming visibly nervous.

“You wonder why I don’t like to ‘call you my girlfriend?’ Because I want to call you my wife,” Weiss told a shocked Jan Svendsen, who was sitting in the audience. The crowd, predictably, went wild.

Weiss then pulled an heirloom ring from his suit pocket as Svendsen made her way up to the stage. “This is the ring that my dad put on my mom’s finger 67 years ago. And to my sisters and brothers: I didn’t swipe it, Dad knows I have it, OK?” he joked. “Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?”

With tears in both of their eyes, Svendsen accepted Weiss’s proposal and gave him a huge kiss onstage. And that is what we call a Hollywood ending.

Emmys 2018 Best Moments: 12 Unforgettable Things You Need to Know About


Tonight’s Emmys 2018 ceremony was chock-filled with buzzy moments, from the TV shows that took home the top honors (cough, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) to a literal surprise proposal (I know). Plus, the Queer Eye guys and Betty White made appearances that revitalized the Internet’s soul. Below, check out all the tidbits from the Emmys people will be talking about for the rest of the week. Get in the loop!

1. Kate McKinnon and Keenan Thompson’s opening song about diversity. It was essentially poking fun at the concept of Hollywood patting itself on the back for making the smallest strides in diversity. RuPaul, Kristen Bell, Ricky Martin, and Sterling K. Brown all made appearances. “We did not solve [diversity]? We have a long way to go?” Thompson says at the end, which, yup, that’s accurate. The number highlighted the fact that we do still have many steps ahead to achieve true equality in Hollywood.

2. Colin Jost and Michael Che’s joke about how no one is watching the Emmys. “We’d like to say hi to the thousands of people in the audience, and the hundreds of people watching at home.” Their opening monologue also included commentary on #MeToo, TV diversity as a whole, the Roseanne scandal, and This Is Us‘ weepiness, among other topics.

3. Chrissy Teigen’s face when the camera panned to her during Jost and Che’s opening monologue. This is literally the epitome of, “I’m not getting involved.”

4. All the wins for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The Amazon comedy took home so many trophies, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Rachel Brosnahan), Outstanding Supporting Actress (Alex Borstein), and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Amy Sherman-Palladino, who also took home a nod for writing).

5. Angela Bassett and Tiffany Haddish’s on-stage banter. They presented the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and spent the entire time just obsessing over each other. Where is their buddy comedy?

6. Chrissy Teigen roasting John Legend on live television. “We get it: You won the EGOT. Don’t encourage him.” It was like her Instagram trolling brought to life.

7. RuPaul and Leslie Jones presenting an award together. Much like Haddish and Bassett, this is the duo we didn’t know we needed.

8. Betty White’s presence. She’s literally an icon.

9. The surprise proposal! During his acceptance speech for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, Glenn Weiss proposed to his girlfriend on screen. On stage. The audience went wild, especially Leslie Jones.

10. Thandie Newton winning Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Westworld. This and Regina King winning for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Seven Seconds were definitely the winning highlights of the night.

11. The Queer Eye guys announcing the award for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series. They offered the characters their makeover expertise, too. Can you believe?

12. RuPaul’s Drag Race winning Outstanding Reality Competition Series. If you don’t love yourself, how the hell are you ‘gonna love somebody else?!

Emmys 2018 Intro: 'We Solved It' Calls Out Hollywood for Thinking It Fixed Diversity Issues


The nominees for the 2018 Emmys are more diverse than ever, with shows like Atlanta, Insecure, and The Handmaid’s Tale racking up multiple categories. Sandra Oh is the first Asian woman to be nominated for a lead actress award for Killing Eve (which you absolutely should check out if you haven’t already). That being said, the industry still has a long way to go. While the nominations this year show we’re heading in a better direction, Hollywood is still by and large dominated by white men, both in front of and behind the camera. It’s important not to lose sight of that.

Don’t worry, though: Kristen Bell, Keenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon, Ricky Martin, Sterling K. Brown, and Tituss Burgess are here to make sure showbiz titans don’t pat themselves on the back too hard. These performers and more appeared in a musical intro at the beginning of tonight’s show that relayed an important message: Just because we’ve made progress in one or two areas doesn’t mean diversity is “fixed.”

One of the highlights of the musical number was when RuPaul came on stage to hammer home the fact that a few LGBTQ+ people or actors of color appearing on hit TV shows isn’t the cure for Hollywood’s diversity problem.

Other memorable moments included when Thompson and McKinnon gave a hat-tip to Sandra Oh’s historic nomination and Oh just said, “It’s an honor just to be Asian,” in response. And at one point, Andy Samberg descended from the stage and asked if there was room for a straight white man in this song—and I think you can deduce how that (hilariously) panned out.
