‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’: Everything We Know About Season Four


Amazon Prime already gave us an early holiday present by dropping the third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel this month, and now the streaming service has even more good news: A season four is happening. On Thursday, December 12, the company announced that it had ordered another installment of the Emmy-winning series starring Rachel Brosnahan as Midge Maisel, the titutal character and charmingly hilarious 1950s housewife turned stand-up comedian.

Amy Sherman-Palladino, the show’s creator and executive producer, celebrated the update in a press release. “We were thrilled to hear that for the fourth time, we do not have to pack up and vacate the premises,” she said. “We’d like to thank Amazon for all their faith and support, their partnership and enthusiasm, and for letting us hang with our favorite people, the cast and crew of Maisel, for a little while longer.”

There aren’t too many details about what exactly is going to happen in season four, but we do have a few clues about the new heights Midge’s comedy career might reach. Here’s what we know so far about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season four.

The premiere date: There are no exact details yet—but if Amazon sticks to the schedule established so far, we will likely see the new episodes at the end of 2020.

The plot: Season three involved Midge’s going on her very first tour, opening up for singer Shy Baldwin. It’s a big step for her career, but it also involves huge shifts in her life—and actress Caroline Aaron, who plays Midge’s mother-in-law, hinted in an interview with Good Housekeeping that the changes are only going to keep coming as the 1950s come to an end on the show.

“As we move into the ’60s, which we are going to do by the end of season three, the world is going to certainly be pulled out from under Moishe and Shirley’s feet,” she said. “The world they knew is going to be a very, very different world. Midge is going to bring that world into this family, and I would imagine it’s going to be hard for us. I don’t know that for sure, but all the rules are changing, and let’s see what that means.”

The cast: While we don’t have exact casting updates, we’re guessing the show is going to keep expanding on Brosnahan’s chemistry with the magnificent Alex Borstein, who plays Midge’s manager, Susie (we need more epic moments like the pool scene from season three).

Where we left off: Abe Weissman announces that he’s going to resign from Columbia, which would mean that he and wife Rose will have to give up their lavish apartment (Columbia owns it). Can Rose talk some sense into her suddenly reactive husband?

What’s to come: Surprises, and lots of them. “The curveballs just kept coming,” Hinkle says. “Rose continues to be thrown and has to find a way to right the ship. She’s fierce, though. I never had any idea what her path would be [from episode to episode]. Although I want Rose to be comfortable, I love that everything is completely out of sorts for her.” It’s a sentiment that Sherman-Palladino echoes as well. “Rose is figuring out her new reality,” she says.

Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch)

Where we left off: Sophie pleads with Susie to represent her and fight for her the same way she does for Midge. Will Susie accept? And will Sophie soften her attitude towards Midge?

What’s to come: Lynch is now a series regular, which means that you can expect to see a lot more of Sophie. Still, Lynch isn’t hopeful that Sophie will turn over a new leaf. “She won’t change at all,” she says with a laugh. “And although she wouldn’t admit it, she’s inspired by Midge. She’s abandoning Sophie from Queens for now and is going into a new realm. She wants to try her chops at acting and she wants to break out of where she was. But her insides are pretty much the same throughout the whole season.”

*The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel* Season 3: Everything We Know So Far


It’s a Saturday night in Los Angeles, and Amy Sherman-Palladino is about to accept the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television at the Producers Guild Awards. But before she takes the stage in front of Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, and Lauren Graham, she gets reflective. “Everything has a different place in your life, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the show where all the elements came together,” she says of the Emmy-winning series she created.

Fans loved Gilmore Girls, and Sherman-Palladino loved it too, but money was always an issue. “We didn’t have the budget to give it what [it deserved],” she tells Glamour. “But we had this unbelievable cast, and that was the fun. And then on Bunheads we had zero money and were on for a hot second, but we got to work with Sutton Foster, and she’s one of my best friends for life.”

Maisel, though, is that secret sauce for Sherman-Palladino. Thanks to Amazon Prime, she got the cast and the budget. “We wanted to see if all the things we had been bitching about for years were true; that if they just gave us the money, [it would happen]. And it did.” She says it’s one of her proudest moments as not just a creator, but a producer, director, and writer. “Now we want to stretch more, try new things and even fail, because it’s a really safe place to do it, and everybody is so good that someone will be there to catch you. It’s really fabulous.”

So fabulous, in fact that Sherman-Palladino has started to brainstorm ideas for season four of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. (Yes, season four. For those keeping track at home, season two just premiered in December 2018 and season three hasn’t even started shoots.) But the woman is on a roll—and so is the show, which has been a favorite all of awards season. On red carpets, Sherman-Palladino and the cast have been letting us in on what’s to come for season three. Spoilers ahead!

Season three will begin filming in mid-March. The writers room has been plotting Midge’s future since mid-January, and the cast will begin filming around the third week of March. But before they immerse themselves back into the world of 1950s New York, the cast and creators will open this year’s Paleyfest in Los Angeles on Friday, March 15.

Maisel might return in time for Hanukkah 2019. Just like last year, when Maisel season two premiered on December 5, the producers are looking to premiere in time for Hanukkah and Christmas (which overlap in 2019), providing the ultimate holiday binge. “Yeah, that’s the goal. If we’re still standing, yes,” executive producer Dan Palladino says.

There won’t be much of a time jump from the end of season two to the start of season three. Sherman-Palladino doesn’t know how many episodes season three will consist of yet (“We’re figuring that out now. We have a general outline.”) but she says they’ve already planned where they’ll pick up in the premiere. Perhaps at Joel’s office after his hookup sesh with Midge? TBD. All Sherman-Palladino will say is there’s “not much” of a time jump, which is good news for fans that are dying to know what happened immediately after the kiss.

Midge and Shy Baldwin are going on tour. Season two ended with the news that Midge accepted singer Shy Baldwin’s offer to go on tour, so just where are they headed in season three? “It’s inevitable that we’re going to go on the road,” Palladino tells Glamour. “Her life is going to end up being everywhere. It’s a show about a woman out in the world, and now that she’s a comic, comics go on the road.” Palladino won’t say where exactly, but the entertainment capital of the world—Los Angeles—might be a safe bet. Teases Sherman-Palladino: “It’s going to be expensive.”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Is Back With a New Full-Length Season 2 Trailer


In what will come as a surprise to exactly no one, Midge Maisel’s jokes have become even sharper and more hilarious—and her statement coats that much bolder—in the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The housewife turned comedian will make her triumphant return to your TV screen in just a few short weeks, so to tide fans over Amazon just released an official trailer for the new episodes.

As seen in the clip, the fast-talking Midge (Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan) is still in hot pursuit of becoming the funniest person in New York City. With her faithful and feisty friend-slash-manager (Alex Borstein, also an Emmy winner) by her side, little by little Midge begins to turn comedy clubs in her favor. Her progress is somewhat slowed, however, by the fact that she’s still keeping her funny bone a secret from almost everyone important in her life. “One year ago my old life ended and my new life began,” she narrates in the trailer. “I wanna be successful, but I haven’t told my friends or parents. Except for my ex. He knows.”

While Amazon has been generous about revealing some details about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s second season over the past few months—hey, we’d be generous after winning all of those awards too—the streaming service also provided an official plot description to accompany the trailer, and it sure seems like tensions between Midge and her parents will be at a high due to her secret. (You know what that means: more screen time for a mustached Tony Shalhoub.)

“After Midge’s triumph at the Gaslight, the fallout from her takedown of Sophie Lennon looms large, making her climb up the comedy ladder more challenging than ever,” the description reads. “As the actual grind of being a comic begins to take its toll on Midge, the pressure to come clean to her family weighs on her—especially as her choices have a ripple effect on everyone around her.”
