Pregnancy Skin Care: Best Tips for a Pregnancy-Safe Routine

My skin is still adjusting to pregnancy life, so I’m trying to give myself a little grace that this is just part of the process. I certainly don’t have a pregnancy glow, more like a few hormonal acne spots and undereye bags. I have had lots of issues with nausea and exhaustion, so I don’t have the energy to stand at the sink and do a long skin care routine. Three to five minutes, and I need to be done.

I’ve always been obsessed with beauty products. My pre-pregnancy skin care routine was pretty intense. I would try new brands and products every few weeks. If it was new and trending, I wanted in.

But with pregnancy, you have to be careful about what might be harmful to you and baby. Early on during my pregnancy I learned that I had to stop using tea tree oil, which I used faithfully on my breakouts, because it could potentially send me into early labor. It’s a muscle relaxant, and my doctor immediately alerted me that the scent alone could be a trigger.

Finding products that are safe and useful during pregnancy can be tough, so my pregnancy skin care philosophy became “get back to basics.” Clinique’s 3-Step System was one of my go-tos, since it had worked for me in high school when I had crazy hormonal outbreaks. I also indulged in my fair share of vitamin E oil. I really liked Nature’s Truth. The oil really helped with the extreme dry skin that pregnancy brought on.

That was probably the biggest change I had to deal with–I found that throughout each trimester, my face slowly became more and more dry. So every few weeks I found myself adding more moisture to my skincare regimen. I vividly remember my skin feeling rough and scaly the last week of my first trimester. It was so hard to camouflage the changes, especially because I kept my pregnancy a secret until 16 weeks. [Triena’s son, Brave, was born in late October 2019.] I indulged in facial masks, steam sessions, and heavy creams and oils. The Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator was one of my favorites.

My favorite part of my pregnancy was my second trimester. It was primetime! I had the mom-to-be glow, and my skin tone was even and radiant. I felt beautiful.

I have always been a firm believer in taking care of my skin through nutrition. Vitamins and raw foods are the best ingredients for hydrated, youthful glow. And eating a clean, balanced diet—including a lot of greens and protein—has always contributed to my skin being clear and bright. In the morning, I have a green smoothie with spinach, cucumber, green apple, and vegan protein powder. After my workout I usually have eggs. Lunch and dinner consist of fish or chicken, rice and broccoli. In between I eat plenty of fruit, and I keep away from dairy. I also take a marine collagen with vitamin C. I actually started my own supplement brand, called FitForce, to get the exact mix I like. It really makes a difference.

This is my second pregnancy, and my skin is still pretty clear and glowing, but relatively dry compared to normal. I don’t have specific brands I’m loyal to—I change it up depending on how my skin feels. But I do always use a face wash and a konjac sponge, followed by an SPF. At night, I use a cream and I add a lemon anti-bacterial night serum to deal with my skin dryness.

Apparently, Liam Hemsworth Doesn’t Care About Miley Cyrus’s Relationship Status

Liam Hemsworth is reportedly completely unfazed by his ex Miley Cyrus‘s highly-publicized relationships following their split in August. If you’re having trouble keeping up, the “Slide Away” singer was first linked to Kaitlynn Carter after she and Hemsworth announced their divorce. Now, she’s dating Australian singer Cody Simpson. But Hemsworth isn’t keeping up with any of this gossip—he’s moved on.

“[Liam] doesn’t have a reaction or plan on engaging with Miley [at this time],” a source tells E! News. “[He] has moved on.”

The insider adds that Hemsworth hasn’t been “seeking out updates on her and what she’s gotten up to. He doesn’t want to hear about it and usually doesn’t.”

Apparently, “nothing is really a surprise at this point” for the Hunger Games star, per this source: “He’s leaving it all in the past and is in a different place now. He is busy on set and working. That’s his focus now and what he is going to keep doing.”

Liam Hemsworth also has a new fling going on of his own. Earlier this month he was spotted out and about with Dynasty actor Maddison Brown. Their exact status isn’t known to the public, but they were spotted kissing in New York on October 10. The Daily Mail has those photos.

Meanwhile, Cyrus’s new boyfriend Simpson threw some low-key shade at all her exes in a recent interview on the Kylie & Jackie O Show. According to E!, Simpson said that Cyrus hasn’t been able to “experience” romance in any of her previous relationships. “I’d like to be the best boyfriend I could possibly be,” he said.

Hemsworth probably won’t talk about his relationship status any time soon. He was very tight-lipped following his breakup from Cyrus, only offering a brief statement on Instagram. “Hi all.
Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward,” he wrote. “This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love.”

Skin Care Routines: How 5 Influencers Go From Summer to Fall

We all have those Instagram accounts we check daily, turn post notifications on for, and refer to in conversation like they’re our actual friends. If you’ve ever scrolled onto one of these photos and wondered “how does she do it?” you’re in luck. Welcome to our series, Insta Stalking, where we talk to the women behind the accounts we’re obsessing over about their beauty secrets. First up, five women reveal how they transition their skin care routines from summer to fall.

Like clockwork, at the change of every season, I get hit with a cold, and my skin freaks out. Out of seemingly nowhere, I’ll be dealing with both major breakouts and dry, flaky patches, no matter what season we’re entering. While it’s never fun, during the fall the dryness is particularly bad, since it serves as a reminder of the extreme dryness to come in the colder months.

What’s at least slightly reassuring is that everyone I’ve mention this to has a similar story about their skin freaking out recently too. Rachel Liverman, esthetician and co-founder of Glowbar, confirms it’s not crazy to blame your skin on the shifting seasons. “Seasonal changes affect nearly everyone; this is due to the level of humidity in the air,” she says. “As the weather changes and the air gets drier, so does your skin. You then turn up the heat in your house and car, which dries out your skin even more.”

Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City, adds that this dryness can contribute to acne, and it’s important to hydrate your skin even if you’re acne-prone. “As the weather gets colder, it’s important to adjust your skin care routine,” says Zeichner. “Look for hydrating cleansers and rich moisturizers to maintain healthy skin barrier function.” Both Zeichner and Liverman recommend adding a more emollient moisturizer, as well as an extra-hydrating serum when the temperature drops. Don’t get too excited and switch out your whole routine, Liverman recommends only adding two new products at a time instead of doing a complete overhaul.

With that in mind, we spoke to women with some of the best skin on the Internet to see how they transition their skin care routines into the fall. From K-beauty steals to $300 creams, read on for their must-have products.

I had somewhat sensitive skin growing up. I went through an oily phase as a teen and had breakouts through my early 20s. When I hit 24, I started getting less breakouts, but my skin got more reactive and I developed rosacea. My redness was at its worst in the winter of 2017, so I cut out all products except for Caudalie Grape Water, Bragg Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, jojoba oil, and castor oil from Whole Foods. Skin is definitely a reflection of holistic internal and external factors, and during that time I was also getting a couple hives on my face, neck, and arms daily. I wasn’t able to make immediate changes to my diet, stress levels, work hours, or environment, so I eliminated skin care products. In the past two years, I built up my skin’s resilience and introduced products back in.

By now you know the drill: Every few months a new wunderkind skin care ingredient is discovered in some remote locale, and pretty soon it’s everywhere—in your masks, serums, foot creams, insert-step-in-your-beauty-routine-here. But at the end of the day, there are only a handful of ingredients that have stood the test of time and truly become essential. “In skin care, they’re the holy grail,” says Cambridge, Massachusetts, dermatologist Ranella Hirsch.

You’ve probably heard of all these by now. (Retinol, hyaluronic acid, AHAs, peptides, and vitamin C all make the list.) But you may still be a little confused on what exactly each one does—and how you should be using them. Here, we break it all down.
